- In this video I weather Revell's 1/72 scale PT-109 Patrol Torpedo Boat. This is part 3 of the build and includes the final reveal. This is Kit No. 85-0319.
PT-109 was made famous by its commander who later became President of the United States, LTJG John F. Kennedy. PT-109 was sunk in a collision with a Japanese destroyer during WWII.
I hope you enjoy this video.
Great video my friend the torpedo boat looks fantastic beautifully painted and weathered great touch with the aluminium paper for the flag really nice build looks forward to seeing what you build next thanks for sharing and keep safe 👍🙏
Hi Rob, thank you for the great compliment, I hope to keep earning it my friend! I think you'll like the next build. Stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling you’re welcome my friend can’t wait 👍👍
Hi Johnny, your PT boat turned out really nice. I think your weathering is spot on. I am going to have to build one of these sometime soon. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
Hi Jeff, thanks for the compliment my friend. I found it fun to build, you would enjoy it I'm sure. Stay safe, model on! Johnny
Hello Johnny. First time on your channel. Impressive weathering added a lot to the model.
The 1963 Revell model got me into the hobby as a kid. Returned to model building, 2018 after forty years. Zoukei Mura's 1/32 Skyraiders, Moebius 1/35
Lost in Space Jupiter 2 and Italeri 1/35 PT109 got me back.
As with a majority of plastic injection molded models, the Italeri kit needed corrections and improvements but overall an amazing model that is 70 cm long.
The PT103 site was a big help. I recently added another video of it on my channel if interested.
Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the kind words and your support! It's amazing to hear about your journey back into the hobby, I'm always happy to share my passion with others! I too came back into the hobby after a long hiatus, mainly looking to keep busy during the lock downs. Thanks for watching, looking forward to checking out your channel. Take care and have a Merry Christmas! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling Thank you for the response, Johnny. I am also a Johnny.
Live in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. I have a similar mind on what the hobby is to me. I retired from my business designing, fabricating, building
custom motorcycles in 1996-2022. I only do reveal videos. It was the encouragement from U.K. model YT channels that I added more content to the only post, the 1/35 Jupiter 2.
Your tutorials are very good and along with the spectrum of fellow instructional channels it is a remarkable time compared to when we were young with only the box art, instructions and the library for info.
This series of videos has been super helpful in helping me paint and weather my Dumas RC version of this boat. Thank you!
Great to hear Simon! Happy you've found something you can use on your PT Boat. Thanks so much for watching, take care my friend. Johnny
Great finish, Johnny. It looks really nice. I love the foil trick with the flag, they are always a problem and I feel I would have tried folding it over onto itself and thereby making a total mess of it. The foil seems to give a much more rigid finish that also seems to be well suited to bending into the desired flag finish. Well done, I'm looking forward to whatever you have to offer us next time,
Thanks for the wonderful comment Gerry. I stole the foil idea from another modeler, don't remember who, but it works so very well. And that's the point of these videos, help others discover a new, hopefully better, way to do something. Stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
Awesome result! Thank you for sharing.👍
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it Zorg, stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
B to the B Buddy!! It turned out great!!👍👍
Thanks Jared👍Looking forward to seeing another update on the wooden ship rebuild! Stay safe and model on! Johnny
Beautiful job, the PT-109 looks great and Your videos are very helpful.
Hi Pa, if one person finds one thing helpful in each video, then I feel I'm successful. Thanks for looking in my friend, model on! Johnny
Luv it Johnny! One to be proud of my friend
Thanks so much Steve, I really appreciate it my friend! Stay safe and model on! Johnny
What a great finished coat it has. Looks amazing.
Thank you Mr. Bumpy! Definitely a fun build. Thanks for watching, take care and model on my friend. Johnny
Microsol interacting with the paint is a good reason to do the gloss coat. Especially when using water based paints.
Really nice job on the PT boat Johnny. Looks flawless and awesome.
Wow, thanks David! It was a fun build for sure. Stay safe and model on! Johnny
Thanks Hillbilly for the videos. Straight forward, easy to listen to and plenty of useful hints. From an old brit who is new to kit modelling and has a great deal to learn. Mick Baines.
Hi Mick! Thanks so much for watching. I'm an old school modeler at heart, but I'm learning new things too, I just got back into modeling a couple of years ago. Things have changed a lot in this hobby since I was a teenager, lol. Thanks for commenting, stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
Nice build, was the first kit I tried to build back in the 70's
That's the beauty of modeling, it can bring back those memories of a simpler time. Happy to hear you enjoyed the build, good luck with your modeling as well! Take care. Johnny
Revell may could have done a better job, but not you Johnny! You did a fantastic job, boat looks fantastic. I really enjoyed this series. Looking forward for your next project. Thanks for sharing, take care and keep up the good work my friend.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed this series, George! I had fun building it, and yes, the kit has some minor issues, but I think it's a good kit and looks great when finished. Thanks for the very kind complement my friend; I really appreciate it! Stay safe and model on! Johnny
Great job on the PT boat Johnny nice weathering and chipping k.u.t.g.w.
Thanks Jeff for the compliment buddy! Stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling I have that kit I’ll be watching your series on your build to help me on mine thanks again
I agree completely about fit of some parts also can be frustrating to have to continually flick backwards and forwards through instructions. Thanks for very informative and enjoyable videos .Greatly helped.
You are very welcome Mick, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a very kind comment my friend. I appreciate it very much. Stay safe and model on! Johnny
Nice build up on the 109... I have to say that this kit is definitely 100% better than old 109 from Revell .. That kit was the worst.. When I built this kit , it was a much better building experience.. I really appreciate you sharing your build with us , enjoyed watching it. 🦅🇺🇸🦅
Thanks so much Charles, glad you enjoyed watching the build. Take care and happy modeling! Johnny
Great job. 👍
Thanks Charlie Mac👍
Nice work I'm going to have to get this kit
You should Rick! It is a nice representation of a PT Boat. I really enjoyed it, and no crazy parts count either. Stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny
Nice work Big Country 🤠. I've built probably 10 or more of the 109 over my 60 years. And I've yet to have just one of them actually turn out the way I wanted or expected it too. I've still got a few more years ahead of me, so I better get a few more 109 Kits and give it another shot. Lol... 😂🤣 But I really like the way your Boat turned out. Really good job on your build.👍🇺🇸
.
Thank you Charles, very kind of you to say. I had a lot of fun with this build, I hope to do another build of the 109 in the future, I think it will be of the last version when it was painted green with JFK in command, I think they would complement each other. Thanks for watching, model on my friend! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling I'll be looking forward to that build. Safe out there my Brother. And keep on Build'n them Kits. 🇺🇸
Outstanding workmanship!
Thanks so much my friend, very glad you enjoyed it! Stay safe and model on! Johnny

Thank you Robert! I believe I'll leave the small figures to an expert like you, my friend!! Stay safe and model on. Johnny
Bonito trabajo👏👏👏
Muito obrigado 😊
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
I’ve gone and got my one of these kits thanks for video and Iam new to your channel and I’ve subscribed
Awesome! Thank you 63melvyn! Good luck with your build!
I bought this kit in the 1960s ….. 2018 must be a reissue
Hi Russell, it is true that Revell has had a PT 109 since 1963. However, according to Scale Mates, this kit, 85-0319, is a New Tool kit released in 2018. I imagine it owes a lot of the engineering to the much older kit. Thanks for watching, take care my friend. Johnny
Nice work!
Try pencil graphite with the dry brush on the metal places .
Just shave the lead and use you finger or a artist blending stub or old paint brush.
Nice work
Thanks for the idea! Model on!
The manufacturer recommended black paint for the helm(steering wheel), but pictures of "Jack" Kennedy with his P.T. boat show that the helm couldn't have been black.
It's so hard to tell what color most of these historical boats really where since they are always in black and white photos. What color it was when it left the manufacturer is not what color they end up being when in actual field use. It always amazes me when modelers argue about what color something is when often times even the surviving records suggest that there are different colors between manufacturers and even what month it was built! Thanks for watching my friend, model on! Johnny
A way better looking boat, the 50 cal's are so much better, nice job, looks real good. I still have two old kits left and will probably try to sell these. I do vend contests. Have one contest left in Nov., then it's hard core shop time and try and finish some of the projects that litter my work spaces, especially "Tonto", can't believe I was given this kit for 10 bucks. The vendor that sold this to me said he wanted to see this finished in my fashion of showing the original kit as a model and not trying to depict a real person, did this with all the original Aurora monsters, took first place in collections with these. Well man, back to the bench and tackle that Wright Flyer, it is so much work, but I want one and have re-thought my presentation of this, again it will be the model as given in the kit and not the real aircraft, way too much work to make this look real. So keep up the good work, always enjoy watching you build, your amigo in construction, Bill G.
Hey Bill, really appreciate that buddy. On another note, do you know that you have comments turned off on your channel? Maybe you don't want to have comments posted, and that's ok. Also, if you mark your uploads as "for children" the comment function will be turned off. Just thought you might like to know. Anyway, have a great week buddy! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling Ya John, I do know this, I don't upload my own video's they are done by someone else. Don't know why the comments are turned off, BUT knowing my modeling buddies my butt would be in a sling, I know several modeler's that are really funny people and their comments would be questionable, and at my expense. I will ask my video up-loader WHY he chose to do this, happy to see you are watching, hope I'm helping. By the way "Tonto" got sanded and put together yesterday minus his head. So keep up the good work, and I'll comment soon, Bill G.
Is that flag 48 stars?
Good eye Rick, yes I counted them just to me sure! 48 stars, LOL
Hey bud what kind of paint you use?!?!TIA
Hi Royston, great question. I'm using Anita Craft Paint. It's a water based acrylic paint manufactured by Rust-oleum. For best consistency I always strain it when pouring it into the airbrush. Craft paints are thick so you will have to thin them, I'm using Vallejo Airbrush Thinner for acrylics, but you can just use water to do the job. Thanks for watching, take care. Johnny
@Hillbilly Modeling thank you so much, I will have a look.. just started on my revell PT 109 😎
@@roystonpereira2887 You're welcome Royston, enjoy your PT109 build my friend! Johnny
Hi, there, I'm glad you didn't paint this boat olive drab because everybody else's P.T. Boat gets painted with that.
Yes, I've seen the same builds you have of PT 109. I'm an armor guy mostly, and being such, I think I've seen a lot of GREEN! So, I decided to build this one in the less seen grey, I'm really glad you like it! Model on! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling People need green to pay rent and bills.
@@MrJuvefrank LOL, yes, we do!
Ventilator.
😊
Nice work, bad model kit. A lot of parts are poorly scaled. There is a website called PT 103 with a lot of detail illustrated for builders. I'm in the process of building an old Lindberg PT 109 kit which is also not great it has a lot of inaccuracies. I'm 3D modeling all new structures then 3D printing them to use with just the hull and deck from the original kit.
Thanks for the info! If you're building a Lindburg kit it must be in 1/32 or 1/64 scale, I think those were the only scales that Lindburg PT boat offerings came in. I could be wrong on that. Good luck with your upgrades, thanks so much for watching. Take care and model on my friend. Johnny
I bought and built PT 588 and believe me, all structures are like you just have pointed: revell did it very poorly. In general terms, the model is a shameful pile of garbage. I won't be surprised the day revell is going out of business because none will wants to buy their models......even made in Germany. I think revell was a bit better when it was in American hands.
Hi Charlie, it is a shame that a kit like this hasn't been refined to the level of price that they cost. This base kit first came out in 1963 with some minor updates through the years, sadly most of these updates were things like decals and graphics and a new 😂. If we were to grade it on the basis of being a 1963 kit, it's great. I've thrown out the box so I don't really remember but I think this is one of the kits that are made in Poland. Revell kits are currently only made in Poland and China. What really gives it away that it is still basically a '63 kit is the thickness of the parts, not that it would be a bad thing except for the fact that they do fit poorly in areas that we need the to fit the best. I guess that's where you and I come in, we make something out of "garbage"! Thanks so much for watching, I hope you have better luck with your next build choice, as do I. Take care and model on my friend. Johnny
