You guys have done a great job with the video. Very impressed.
So to add my take (Nick from Skuzzle). The job didnt take a full month of labour. We had paying customers in around phil who needed dyno time and ecu's and turbos etc.
We have recommended from day 1 to take phil to a bodyshop for paint but have applied a red coat for now as we dont have the facilities for this scale of paintwork. The orange peel effect is stonechip which is found on all mx5's from the factory although I won pretend the paint job is perfect, it is not as bad as people are thinking who are unaware of the stonechip situation,
We are primarily an MX5 specialist but not restricted to MX5's and our main audience is for tuning and motorsport. Unfortunately with all MX5's, rust is a huge problem and being one of the most recognised MX5 specialists in the county this is something we do spend a lot of time repairing. This project was actually quite fun being given the chance to add the little personal touch like the flair at the bottom.
Certainly a repair that was uneconomical with the current prices of MX5's but in years to come this may become quite a regular thing as 5 prices go up and good cars get fewer.
I never thought id say it but "Long Live Phil"
Nick Bailey Amen to that! I'll be back soon for some serious fun if you'll let me? ;)
+Alex Kersten whats the song called when you reveal phil?
Nick Bailey recently bought an MX-5 (yet to collect it), I'm sure I'll be taking her round yours at some point for a bit of TLC, I hope all's well at Scuzzle!
what do you mean by "uneconomical"? how much did it cost, and can you really find mx5 NA's that aren't rusted? all of the ones i see for sale in EU have a serious rust problem. Paying more for a "better preserved" mx5 NA doesn't solve this issue.
@@shanucfr my exact way of thinking. There is nothing more economical than saving a great car from certain death. The money for repairs goes directly to working people. On top of that - a new car would be nothing like the mx-5. I have the same attitude towards my E36.
Rust holes? More like weight reduction
DinoTheAynlsmasher amen
THE TRUTH HAS BEEN SPOKEN!
Steel weighs 40% more after its rusted btw.
lkjlkjlkkj but the holes takes away a lot.. would be interesting to see how it really effects the weight. If the holes are enough to keep the weight down vs the rust weighing more.
If you get holes in important structural members the car will be less stable and have less torsional rigidity
(in a super bro voice) dude just like put a v8 in it. Like my cousins got one with a v8 and he pull veyrons. So like should just do that... bro
He should get a LS7/9.
Woo Jake likes CT too!
Jake TheGardenSnake Love your videos man
Jake watches car throttle! Another reason to love him!!
Jake TheGardenSnake depending on the v8 and what you do to it in terms of forced induction, you could possibly make a veyron driver nervous. veyrons are not as fast as they used to be.
i mean, imagine something like 700 horsepower in a teeny tiny NA. talk about power to weight
I'm not one to put the blame on anyone but normally if the bloody previous owner or first owner actually bothered to protect the car and look after it, half of the miatas about today would be rust free, roaming the city streets without a hitch. I blame non car guys
Sam Kent exactly! they can't take care of cars for toffee.
Sam Kent all miatas rust. it's a design flaw apparently
my 1991 is rust free :) but also form Arizona
Salt + water + stock miata with no rust protection = rust. Because the uk uses salt in it's grit, a lot of the mx5s here rust.
I'm guessing that you live somewhere where it doesn't rain or ice over quite as frequently as it does here in the UK. We have one of the worst climates for rust. It's wet, not that cold but we do get ice on the roads in the winter and so the councils put salt on the road. All of that adds up to a the perfect environment to encourage rust.
Damn.... Most people would've junked him. So glad there are people out there like you Alex. These beauties need the preservation!
#SaveTheNAs
7 String Skyline We need more people like Alex ! Clone Alex !!! Also really, those people in the comments are retarded, how can you scrap such a beautiful car ?! MX-5 for life!
@@enderblazex2718 save the miata family
You can say anything the rusty eagle covered itself and complicated other people 😂
Why don't we learn ?
Could you imagine what a world we would live in if rust didn't exist?
Came back to watch this since I just bought.. rescued.. a 32 year old MX5 that's not this bad but still in a state, people say it's expensive but I can see why, amazing that this can be repaired. Hoping to take mine in to get this done within a couple of months!
I give you and phil mad props for going through all this!!!
Agreed
Yes boi
I imagine this cost way more than the actual car LOL.
MrGovenator1 2000£
@@957cayennes oof
william 911 turbo s only £2k ? I can’t believe it that’s cheap
Looking at all this was putting me off getting an MX5 but hell if it’s only £2k for basically a full rebuild of the rust prone areas I can live with that
JAMP0T1 no 2000£ could buy you 2 mx5
william 911 turbo s £2000 could buy you two rusty bog standard MX5s ... I want a good condition 6 speed 1.8 with the hardtop ... that’s around £2k on its own ... hell I’ll happily spend £2-£3k welding any potentially rusty areas and protecting them
I’m going back into an apprenticeship next year so if I’m getting myself an MX5 now I want to sink as much money as I can into it now while I can afford it to avoid it going wrong next year
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I'll take this as a reminder to check for rust when I get my used car here soon.
Same here lmao
+Durararide!! Have just bought a corrado with a bit of rust in the back that is fixable but didnt check under the car nor anywhere else, I ll have it delivered in a few days, I can say I m pretty fucking scared right now!
+farros100 how was the rest of the car?
@@22rosco22 thats a RIP
It looked pretty good. Come to Canada, you'll know what real rust looks like XD
I recognize myself a lot in this video! I thought that my Volvo 440 had a lot of rust but Phil had much and much more 😱 I like the passion and dedication that Alex has for Phil and I have that for my 440!
That paint job is sooooo buggered. Needs more color sanding and leveling. I'd be pissed with that outcome.
JDMSteven to be fair, he went above and beyond what we agreed and didn't have to do any painting, so I'm thankful that he did. It's getting a wrap soon (as he knew), so it's all good!
JDMSteven glad im not the only one who thinks the paint is hideous
Alex Kersten Good to hear its being covered up lol
Big Irish I have an eye for bodge paint jobs
Agree
I love how the music starts playing at 9:46 and it's the same music as was played in the Top Gear episode with the Toyota Hilux! Lol
Jesus that must've cost a shit-ton of money
***** He basically employed 3-4 fabricators for a month. lol
***** That's atleast £30/hr as 'mates/promotional rates'...now, 30x16 (8hr pay x2 for two fabricators) = £480, a day.
1 month+5 days=35 days.
£480x35=£16,800. +material cost (easily £5000)...
£21,000+ for a 1995 MX-5? Alex Kersten are you mad? 0_0
MattySP34Ks imagine if he did that would be mad I think it was all promo with a bit of money. Think of a radio ad for the company would cost a lot and only reaches some potential customers where as this reaches just the right people ☺
***** Had my sils replaced on my calssic mini because it failed mot and that cost £2,500. Yes its very expensive haha.
yeah too much rust i would have bought a new rust free or less rust and swapped the mods to it
I absolutely love the fact that the Miata actually have mechanics who are specialists on fixing this specific car, and how this car actually have so much love in the world and it's respected by so many gearheads, it totally makes me want to buy my own.
Also oh god that Suzuki Cappuccino, so much yes, can you guys at Car Throttle make a video about Kei Cars?
It's weird coming from watching Haggard Garage to this. This feels way too professional haha
I love the way the dude cutting the panels out was so casual about shooting sparks toward his dingus.
Well done to everyone involved in the video, and well done Ethan - edited wonderfully.
badnad13 Thanks a lot.
I'm happy to see that Phil will live to see another day, but after watching this I'm even happier that I live in a region where the roads aren't salted. I couldn't bear to see my MX-5 being cut into like poor Phil!
I wanna see this build really start to get underway... Suspension, turbo, roll bar, interior...
These guys really look like they know what they're doing. They aren't too far from me and I think my '92 going to need some rust repairs soon.
Good to see you saved it.I couldn't take hearing about Phil being scrapped
I also have a miata and I had my headlights were sunken a little bit such as yours are and aren't flush with the hood.. just pull them up a little bit with your hands with the hood up and they will sit flush and it will look cleaner.. just a friendly tip
I wonder how much the garage charged for all the repairs
Oh my!! So much rust!! I would've figured it'd been easier (and cheaper) to find another frame/body and transfer Phil's engine and interior into it. Looking forward to more videos in this series.
I love cars. I absolutely hate rust. Well done guys. Damn you rust!!
I like these "Destroy&Build up again" videos. And the choice of music is perfect too. Keep up the good work Alex :)
That's my dads old Suzuki cappuccino that he sold months ago, the only one in the uk that colour
I spent 2,500 on my old hi ace campervan and it still needs work on the top,i get you mate.weldone.Picking an eunos up this week first series .
Cool to see it fixed but that orange peel painting is pretty poor.
***** If it's the sill you mean, then that 'orange peel' is in fact stone chip.
***** By the way orange peel is easy fixable
***** its supposed to be like that
The lower parts of older cars are painted with this rough textured paint so its resistant to stone chips.
There's always more rust than originally anticipated
Ur killing it Alex... Keep up the good videos !
quite interesting to see what can be done (even if it is uneconomical). Even though fixing such a badly rusted MX5 is a bad idea then if your car needs one or two of those fixes then this video is brilliant
Mom always told me. Anything u can fist is bad. Lmao
there is a red 1997 NA MX5 in Germany with 9 027 kms driven, being stored in fully air conditioned garage for 15 years, it costs 14.985 €
maybe that car is cheaper than restoration we saw, anyway there is one more Miata on the road now, thumbs up for that
I get it now! I know why he named it Phil in honor of the man himself Phil Collins!
ThatOneGuy1170 Amen!
"my mum told me that anything you can fist, is bad". Quote of the day right there :D
Yeah, this is a 25 year old hair dressers car, but think about it this way: In the mid 80's/ early 90's do you think many people gave a damn about cars like Novas, Mavericks, Dusters, S800s, Darts, Escorts (EU), Cortinas, etc from the late 60s and early 70s? Pretty much only enthusiasts did. When I was a kid you usually apologized when somebody said they had a Nova. Enthusiasts cars, no matter how entry-level, will always have love and will find a home to live on in, and in 20 years when this Miata is still driveable, this work to save it from the bin will be much appreciated.
I'm glad your fixing it because we have a harved mx5 and their all rusting away thank you 😍
watching phil get cut apart was emotional
The video I have been waiting a long time for, glad Phil is back! :D
This was what spelled the end of the line for my old MX-5. It would've cost way more than the value of the car to repair so it was 'see ya later' to Marv. Lesson here? Never ever buy an old UK spec MX-5. They are almost all in this state underneath. Get a Eunos if you can find one. You just might avoid these issues.
Only now noticing how much better Alex's narration/ voiceover work used to be compared to now. Much more natural if a little awkward.
Haggard's gonna hate this...
Yoan Carlove i'm thinking the same haha *****
Yep lol ...love haggard bless there ruined miata's ....been subscribed to them when there channel was tiny
Don't think they would bother having a rust repair, they'd buy a new one
I can imagine rudnick saying just bondo everything haha
And for those who understand this is using a car and replacing it... I do that myself, theres no point in fixing a car like haggard's if you can get a clean one, unless you do everything yourself. And if you do everything yourself, you can't go too Haggard because man, it will never be right. Bondo is fine if you dont give a crap but it will be worse a few years down the road at best...
YESS!! Phil is rust free, what a beast of a car! 🚙 (there should be an MX5 emoji)
"anything you can fist is bad" .......... no if you're into that sort of thing, actually
Nice to see Phil is saved! But he could do with that paint sorting, doesn't look great!
So are quarterpanels/fenders called wings in England?
Yes (ik I’m 5 years late)
Just like the MG's of the 60's, 70's and 80's that the MX5 took over from its full of rust!!! You guys should come look at my 1969 mg midget!! Lovely but a little rust here and there
I totally feel you here, my 01 Honda Prelude has some small rust bubbles in the rear wheel well area, I want to get it cut and replaced....scared to see the price!
I understand that this car means a lot to Alex but for what this cost him I would have just bought a rust free import from Japan and used this UK spec model as a donor car
Japan is also island country with similar climate to England, so pretty much the same rusted car(salt from the sea water speed up the rust on metal).
@@パンチャウィーニンサマットhe probably meant because Jap imports are made with stronger stuff unlike the cheese like UK ones
Older Mazdas are really infamous for rusting away like insane. When you said you boughjt a '95, I immediately thought "hell no, you have no idea what you are getting into".
I want a miata, but I'm scared of rust
Random account Mine has Zero rust
Get an American car.
@@jackg5094 They can't go around corners.
Great work there from the guys at Skuzzle, that rust was worse than my '79 Fiesta haha
Was that a Suzuki cappuccino?
"My mum taught me that anything you can fist is bad..."
Best life advice ever there from your mum lol
"My mum taught me that anything I could fist is bad." Does that mean, by that logic, that your exhaust tip is bad then?
Are you gay? :D
ItzV1ct0r I don't get it
FIRST!
Alex Kersten Better luck next time aha
Alex Kersten Beat us to it.
Alex Kersten Is it nice to be first? I don't know who you are, but I guess you deserve it.
Павел Махнин you Just watched a whole video him
president Pacman Really? i thought that was Jeremy!
Love these videos! Crazy how much rust was on this thing...
lol the amount of money he spent doing this could have bought another MX-5
It wouldn't be the same. That mx-5 is worth more to him then just its sum in parts.
Robbie Gobeli Is it worth 20 grand more? Because I doubt this cost any less.
MAEguy ........this year and model costs 10k in mint condition, his is around 5-7k buy anothr one. You must not knoe about cars and money
That would ruin the series! Its about him and hos journey with phil and all the problems he will face
Tommy Le
Lol I don't know about cars? I was saying the work he had done here must have cost around 20 grand and that it was not worth it. I know he could have bought a small fleet of Miatas for the money, or probably 2 or 3 collector quality Miatas. If he spent 5-7k on his car he spent too much (unless they cost more in the UK). Either way, my comment was pretty obviously directed to the first commenter, not the OP.
My mum told me that anything I can fist is bad. Words to live by. This is why I subscribe. Cheers!
Why didnt you scrap it? It has got no stiffness now
The car is worth more the the cost to repair it, not $$$ wise.
well said, but now it needs every strut bar you can find for a mx5
mati2400 How come? They did it like the factory - spotweld sheet metal to make a car. I bet it's as stiff or stiffer than original.
There is no way this car is worth as much as the repairs
YAY! you saved Phil! i dread to think what Jess looks like underneath D: but she looks good out side and still drives like a dream old had to replace a Rad, head gasket and a few minor things, but needs a new exhaust, front light, Engine bay full clean and paint reviving, scratch repairs and a headlight suround (half of one anyway.) but for 23 years old...she's doing great #Phil and #Jess #ProjectMX5
holy crap. could prbably have gotten a mint condition mx5 for that money...
also: whats up with the paint on the door at 12:00?
Matthias Schmitt commonly known as 'orange peeling'-badly sprayed...
MattySP34Ks that's what I thought, but they didn't fix the door, did they? maybe repainted after an earlier repair?
Matthias Schmitt they probably just resprayed whole car. It would be hard to match the paint by just painting the rear guards and skirts. Orange peal can be remove by cutting and buffing the paint. Often times wet sanding and using abrasive buffing compounds with cutting pads and slowly making your way up to less abrasive compounds and pads and then finishing if off with polish and wax will give it a mirror finish with no more orange peal effect.
Tucker Maxam oh wow, I don't even want to know how much money he already put in that miata...
Matthias Schmitt
To him itll be worth it in the end. Im in an identical boat with my wrx.
Thank you for saving a classic!
Uh Sayonara mean good bye (long terms)
best to use "Ja ne"(good bye short terms)
I'm not a grammar nazi I thought it be cool to pass on something I've learn. Cheers
When I saw that 206, my heart melted. So many feels !! We had one !! I miss it. Anyhow congrats on the MX5 man. Looks awesome
"effectively as good as it was when it came out of the factory"
A well executed job will be always be scene in the workers' faces showing pride and admiration for what was accomplished.
The looks on the shop workers' faces says it all. It's SHIT work to do, no matter how well intention-ed the repair is, 95% of these kind of repairs are fudged and cobbled somewhere, never amounting to what the installer could have hope it to be in the beginning of the job. Unless these guys buttered up the insides with corrosion inhibitors of some kind, it will likely rust out AGAIN at every spot where there is a weld.
Don't Ever get it wet.
When you weld, the high heat BURNS AWAY any kind of protection from rust, this is why the factory "dips" the bodies in a primer type bath after they are manufactured. The gray coloring you see inside once they cut the rocker panel/sill off is the protective coating.
It is extremely rare to find someone who is concerned enough about the work 2-3yrs
down the road to care enough to apply internal corrosion protection. The bottom line is these repairs are labor intensive to even do a 75-85% job. 4 days turned into over a month.
I really feel badly for the guys who worked on the car. They obviously were NOT HAPPY with it, just relieved the abomination was LEAVING, releasing thier shops' car lift that it took hostage for weeks during the repairs. They all look like they have been eating shit sandwiches that the owner of this albatross has been feeding them, not to mention that look of awakening from a comatose nightmare of a serious rust repair job, that they lost money on.
This thing should be renamed "Phill-er", after all the auto body filler that has been "smothered" into this heap.
Rockitanski EXACTLY this guy got fucked from the very beginning
I think that look on their faces was “I’m high as hell right now wish this camera wasn’t in my face” lol
I have had really good luck using an oil-based rustproofing here in SW Ontario, My 1980 Fiat Spider (donated to my much younger brother) is virtually rust free as is my 1998 Rav4 which is virtually only driven in the winter. If you use an oil-based spray like Rust-Check/Krown or similar every other spring and clean the underbody of your car regularly your cars' body should last almost forever. I also own a 2006 mx5 which is rust free. Do not use the asphalt-based sound-deadening material as it traps moisture!!
For how much this probably cost, I bet it's cheaper to import a Miata to Britain from somewhere that cars don't rust. Like California or Florida
Those places rust like hell, I recommend Arizona or New Mexico.
Bryan Doherty Steering wheel on the wrong side. Australia or New Zealand would be a better option.
That wouldn't matter to me, there are right hand drive cars in North America that people drive, and in sure in Britain there are people who drive left hand drive cars, because they imported them. But if you don't want the steering wheel on the other side, because the shifter, wiper stalk and light stalk are different I know what you mean, the first time I drove a right hand drive car, I kept turning the wipers on when I wanted to use the turn signal lol
The AE86 of Mt. Akina I RECOMMEND NEW ENGLAND. BECAUSE I LOVE PAIN.
The AE86 of Mt. Akina rust in ca? maybe visit ca first before you spew rubbish out of your mouth?
looking forward on the next episode, love this!
Orange peel for days!
xXuNgOdLyKiLLXx Stone chip!
Seriously! Everybody thinks its orange peel, but it's stone chips lmao
My MX-5 is in a similar state. It had been patched and bogged to hell and back by the previous owner, and he'd hidden it well, but never really dealt with it.
So I when I started grinding and cutting, all I found was more rust. It's gonna get scrapped. It's beyond saving, unless you're a passionate with access to a real garage and lots of time.
12:00
with that much orange peel you could get lots of zest for some great cakes
Ryukachoo That's called stone chip...
It's NOT orange peel. It is stone chip paint that's made to keep paint from chipping from rocks and debris. All NA Miata's have that paint on the lower portion of the door down.
Thats rust?! Ha thats adorable. Should see my two cars here in northern michigain in the states. I got a pile of rusted metal flakes and yet i havent scrapped neither of my cars. But it looks good and glad to know that the seatbelt mount was fixed.
Not trying to be a hater, but I would have scrapped that car and gotten a rust-free example...
Cant wait to see how this car is going to be
Anyone 2018?
Maaaayyyybbbbbeee
not sure
Thats to cover the thunder bird 😂 and the union strikes 😂
ur mum told u that?😕
phil.
the cutest lil little thing ive ever seen
Step 1: Buy a piece of crap
Step 2: Put a crapton of money in that piece of crap.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Still have a piece of crap.
Benedocta OK, but it's my piece of crap and I love it.
Alex Kersten I totally feel you, I did the same thing with a bike.
So I know the "I'm in so far, I just need to fix this and its done". And a couple thousand euros later you think to yourself: I could have had a way better bike.
Like I said, I get it, but when you're finished, you're probably in Boxster territory.
Well that was an absolutely mahoosive job, probably worth 2-3x the value of the car. I recently had my sills repaired too so I know how much of a headache it is and none of the body shops I went to were keen to do the job. In all honesty, the vast majority of cars that need sills or arches replacing are better off scrapping.
This shit is taking way too long. I'm starting to lose interest. Come on Alex, speed things up a bit, not just the Miata!
I do hope they used weld through primer on all the metal work they fabricated, else you will need it all doing again in a few years time. They did do a good job on the panel matching and arch flare though.
5 WEEKS !!!, Phil's a strong lad
Would be interesting to know the costs of that repair. The labour costs alone would be staggering.
Car Throttle, If all the sheet metal rust repair is "free," that's good for you. However, this car is so badly damaged and weakened by rust, you would be better off by scrapping it after salvaging all of the usable parts, of course. You can get a NA Miata prettp cheap, and you won't have to go through the pain and major labor to fix this one.
"Anything you can fist, is bad" I'm sorry I had to I just can't believe he said that
Wow are we all really 7 years older already?
Think YT recommended I watch this again after viewing so much @yorkshirecarrestoration content and cannot say I've ever seen them needlessly remove so much sound original steel from an MX5 as poor Phil had to suffer.
Definitely inspiring to me knowing the rust on my car can someday be salvaged with the right guys, just need the cash!
***** Give Skuzzle a call. They had SO much fun doing mine, that I'm sure they'd pay YOU to do more ;)
Haha thanks alex!! Unfortunately I'm in the states but maybe I'll ship my Jennifer over sometime! Love your miata BRO!
i love a restoration story that is a bit insane :D
I currently have the same problem. My MX5 is rusted to bits and it has a high milage. I love driving it in winter, so it was always going to be a missle. Can't get it street legal anymore, don't know what to do. Get a nicer one and use wax in the sills or get someone to rebuild the whole chassis. You can easily get an engine swapped but you CAN'T find nice chassis here.
MK1 Mx5 rust used to be unheard of back in say the early 00's.. They're now knocking on 20 years plus in damp uk climate so not surprising they're starting to rot really..The mk2 is worse.
Is this like a specialised MX5 workshop? Nice!
John514 It is indeed.
I love the lack of care like a real shop would do. Grinding next to glass and exposed interior. Not even taking the car apart 🙄 etc, what a riot!
WOW! In North America it would be hard to find a shop even willing to take on this kind of rust repair, very thorough job! When I got my rust repaired they just slapped a patched over the crap that was there and said it will come back in 5 years... They were the ONLY shop in a large area willing to do anything other than throw fiberglass in it... must just be my area! However the differential in textures down below the beltline is garbage, either make it all smooth or keep the factory texture, don't just change the few panels you paint.
At last!! Another video of Phil!!
I know this is relatively old now, but I am wondering how much this set you back. I am looking to buy an MX-5 but a lot of them do have rust.
