On a new job I had the cubicle on the intersection coming out of the break room. I was a developer and was trying to decode some really awful assembler code when these 4 men in suits decided to hold a meeting at that intersection. After about 15 minutes, I poked my head around the corner and asked them if they could please take the meeting to a meeting room. Come to find out one of them was the senior managing director of Information Technology.... where I worked. My supervisor almost had a stroke and told me who I'd just told to move along. Next day the director came up and introduced himself to me. He thanked me for speaking up. I told him I tended to just speak up...he thought that was wonderful. For the next 4 years, until I left, he'd ask me my opinion on all sorts of stuff. We kind of became friends.
I was once on an email about firing me at the end of the day on the 90th day of my employment. It was a strange experience😂, but I had time to gather info for getting unemployment, getting the office cleaned up for the next person (this was in the medical field and I didn't want patients to be affected by this.) Once everything was neat and tidy, my car packed 🙃 emails cleaned out etc., I sat back with a book and read. A few raised eyebrows from some...😅 At the end of my shift, I walked into their office and held up my hand to stop them from speaking. I smiled big and said "Thanks Kate, for adding me to your email earlier. Everything is set. Have a nice evening. " It got very quiet, she turned beet red, everyone was shifting in their seats. I just laughed, and, making sure her boss heard me, I said, "I didn't mess up the files. Your inept IT tech is backing up old files daily, as I told you many times, overriding every day's work. But you wouldn't listen...tsk tsk. I feel sorry for the next person in this job." And I left.
I'm retired now but... During the 1980s I worked at a small 300 bed hospital as CHUC (certified health unit clerk) when we were informed the hospital was going to get a really wonderful hospital wide computer. I asked my director if I go to Maryland to train on the computer, please please please!!! She said no because administrative heads were going. It is not that I wanted to go to Maryland, been there done that. When I got my password, no training, I logged on. At some point I was blocked and couldn't move out the screen I was on. I was randomingly hitting keys when a window popped up reading " Are you sure you want to boot the system ". My first though 'is that Marylandisse for dumb Texan do you want go back to where you started?" my reply was the yes button. The entire hospital and all the clinics lost everything. I fes'd up the next day that I think I may have caused it? They didn't fire me. But I was always the first one considered of any training session on anything after that. They even helped me to become a patient care coordinator.
Our office secretary once received a lady at her desk asking for the director. She asked, is this for the catering of tomorrow’s event? As the lady was wearing quite a modest, dark blue ensemble fit for the catering peeps in our building. No, the lady replied, I am Danielle, the Director General! Hahaha my colleague wished she could disappear right then and there. And we laughed hard after hearing the story, still a good one. 😂 Same type of story of a high level lady at a corporate. She told me about the time she entered the board room where some men who hadn’t met her yet were already waiting. They asked her for a coffee. Which she happily brought them. The others come in, after which she sat down in the president’s chair, and opened the meeting, leaving them flabbergasted 🎉🎉🎉
*I got one* Museum i was employed at was unknowingly in illegal possession/displaying of a mummy. Mummy was donated to the museum the 80's. Was on display for 15 years. Then in the late 90's it was discovered that some of the paperwork was forged thereby making the mummy technically "smuggled contraband". So it needed to be taken off display. Fast forward to 2018.. Due to the implending change management companies and us knowing the person who would be taking over. (Long story, this person had been fired from the museum in 2014 for sketchy things). So we staff didnt trust that person. A group of staff made it their personal mission to discover as much as they can about the mummies rightful origins. Through a long process we were able to discover the country of origin. And we were able to make a plan with the government of that country for some of our staff to travel to that country with the mummy. So in late 2018, a mummy was finally able to be reunited with its homeland.
@@CuriousAbtEverything Yes it was such an experience to go through. There are details that I think it's best not to share online but I gave a brief summary of the whole experience. It honestly is on the list of things that make me proud of the team and my entire time in the museum. (Btw, I also have a scary story regarding the mummy. And that's definitely the #1 most scariest thing to happen to me in my life).
@@ingriddoerksen9518 Haha 😆, Ok scary story time. This was in 2016, during the time in which the mummy was in our collection area. My coworkers told me a lot of stories about odd things happening from time to time in the collection area. You know little things like things not being where you left them, sounds that felt out of place and no one could find the source, doors opening on their own. The thing about these doors is that they are connected to a system that sounds an alarm in the entire collection area so if any of the doors is open longer than a set time then it goes off. So the door alarm suddenly going off in a section of the collection area where no one has entered that day is a bit scary. Also some reported an uneasy feeling of being watched while in the collection room. (Aside from the cameras of course). Oddly enough, all that stopped once a spiritual coworker started to do weekly visits to the mummy to just chat with her. My experience starts when a coworker of mine and I had to pass through the collection area in order to get to the room beside it. The room is big and can be rented for parties or conferences. The collection area and this room share a wall together and there are huge double doors that connect them. (They can only be opened up from the collection area side). There is a door to the party room in which the public has access to but we had to move a big piece of furniture into that room that required us to use the huge doors. My coworker and I signed out the keys to enter the collection area. There are 2 special keys and only 2 sets of those keys. Once one pair is signed out, then no one (not even the director) can sign out the other set as is protocol. Now that the context is out of the way. My coworker and I were going through the collection area with this furniture and I asked him if I could say hello to the mummy. As it has become a custom for everyone to say hello to her. So I stop and say hello. (The mummy is in a containment box). My coworker also says hello and then asks if I would like to open the containment to get a closer look. I said "respectfully no". So after our hellos we continued to move the furniture into the next room. We open the huge doors, he enters first, we set up the furniture where it needs to be. And then we hear an alarm go off. So we immediately head back into the collection area and close the huge doors. But that doesn't stop the alarm. We start to back track through the collection area knowing we closed every door. Then we get to where the mummy is. And the door is open.. not only that, but the containment box is open.. and the lid, is up and askew. We both look at each other and immediately know it wasn't either of us. And it couldn't be anyone else as no one would be able to sign out the keys. In that moment I shed a single tear from fear and concern. We then follow the protocol to close everything and I verbally tell the mummy that I am sorry if I offended it. As we are talking, the door on the other end opens slightly. At that point we continue to apologize as we make our way out of the collection area. Closing every door. We immediately go to return the keys, and there are the other keys. In the safe, so we knew no one was messing with us and what we just experienced was real.

So much we don't know about what goes on after we die. I am so glad that you were able to send her back home. Sounds like not much effort was made by others who should've done this upon finding out about her. I'm going to revisit this post to read it again - thanks again for indulging me. 😊
The project manager asked me to cover the front desk. I said “ nope, no raise no front desk” “What?” I said “ I did everything my supervisor asked me to do and it hurt my number, so she denied my raise. So no raise no front desk. I will work the front desk for her when I get a raise and back pay.” The project manager turned to my supervisor “well, Susan you heard her ‘no raise, no front desk’. It looks like you will be working the front desk for the rest of the day.” Our project manager was a hard a-, you could hear everyone around me suck in air when I said no. When they walked away, I let out a major sigh of relief.
My managers used to do that to some people. They're the ones who assigned the caseload every day. And after months of keeping someone on the same caseload, they'd use that as a reason to deny the next raise, saying "you need more experience in the other caseloads (that we never assign to you)." They know how to pick their victims too because they know who will raise hell and who will take it lying down.
When I was employed at Macys, a man in a suit approached me and asked for my supervisor. I asked if he was there for an interview, and he said sort of. I escorted him to the waiting area and told him which manager was likely going to greet him. He asked me how long I’ve been working for the company, and I said about four months. He thanked me for my service and waited patiently. Later, my store manager met up with me and let me know that was the regional manager and I made a fantastic impression.
I worked in a small IT company for a big company, one day i accidentally deleted hundreds of prenotations around the country from a production DB, it took weeks to somehow restore part of them. That day, going back home in the car with the boss was really awkward until he said "did you understand the mistake u made?" "yes" "then it's ok." Fast forward 8 years same thing happened for another big company, very similar mistake, he was there with me, i started hyperventilating, i was kinda mentally devastated... he puts his hands on my shoulders and said "relax man... it's ok, we can fix this (maybe). take 2 minutes to chill and come back." He was a great boss.

@happylittlevibe it was basically just "we are considering hiring this person for this position that hasn't been filled for a long time! Yay! Thoughts?" And then someone replied with some logistics questions. Then they noticed I was there. Nothing too specific about me other than a mention of my enthusiasm and qualifications. It had my cover letter attached for their reference.
A couple of these resonated with me. Some in a good way. Some... not... The press conference one reminded me how, just this last summer, this service club I'm a member of was going to try and organize a community softball game for 4th of July. Those of us planning the event set up a meeting; it was me and two other people. About half hour to an hour after the meeting was supposed to start, I realized I had forgotten about the meeting; and was preoccupied working on something else... and it turned out the other two people who were going to be there had forgotten about it as well. One of whom was my own brother.... Another one - the one where someone texted someone that so-and-so was pissing them off, and they _were_ the so-and-so... One time some replied to a question I had asked, that another person had forwarded to them; but the person responding didn't delete the body of the email sent to them, which read, "Can you answer his question? He's driving me crazy." Mind you, I was following up with them on something I had previously contact them about once, a _month_ prior. And that kind of BS is the reason I hate asking anyone anything, because there's been this sense my whole life that I'm just bothering anyone I talk to; and here's the proof.
Had a colleague who kept a small orange (clementine) in his drawer. It eventually dessicated / mummified to this dried, wizened shrunken head of an orange. He called it Clem.

I once told my coworker (knowing it would get to my boss' boss) that I am going for an interview. I was offered a job but I didn't like it so I wasn't going to an interview, but at that time one other colleague was leaving to that company, and my direct boss was leaving as well (to a different place), so they panicked and gave me a pay rise to keep me there.
Our married department secretary (small IT group) was engaged in inappropriate behavior with the married director of said department. It was very specifically in the HR policy designated "inappropriate". I used to casually mention crap to or infront of her that I wanted to get back to the director. Not often, just when I needed to circumvent the supervisor and manager. Neither were bright enough to know they were being played. We brought in another woman and I left. They started harassing her when they found out her boyfriend was a person of color; writing her up for fake issues. She called me. I told her to casually mention in front of the secretary that she had reached out to me and I'd suggested she and I file a class action lawsuit for sexual harassment and discrimination. She mentioned it. The harassment stopped. The write ups stopped. She was given a nice raise and a promotion. She took me out for dinner. I told her to feel free to use it at will.
1:24 The smelly cheese story reminded me of one time when my employers downstairs office neighbour moved out and for some reason, someone in that company left a packet of frozen fish in that offices kitchen freezer, left the freezers door open and turned it off. It was early summer... I don't even dare to imagine what it smelled like in the empty downstairs office, but we had to keep our office kitchen's sink full of water for few weeks to stop the smell invading our office (it took a while to figure out where the stink was coming from). I felt sorry for the maintenance guy who had to remove the smelly fish and clean the freezer.
I can relate the one about too much colleague sex. I was on a team of 40 people right after graduating college. Everyone on the team was between the ages of 22 and 30. Over half of the colleagues were sleeping with each other. The sexual tension was palpable. Legit saw colleagues go out to their cars during a break and come back with messy hair and clothes. A memo was sent out asking everyone to cut it out during working hours.
Yes, the "No Sex at Work" talk. I remember that. Also, the "No Sex with Clients" talk. Was very dismayed that these HAD to be a talking points. Not just in our office but part of a Countywide memo. I work for a govt agency. Lots of legal and ethical issues...
If I read a typo in someone's email, I.E., the word "respond" and the person spells it "respobd" I look at my keyboard, the B is next to the N. I carry on with my day and don't worry about it. Now if they spell it "Respoqd" How the hell did you hit the Q instead of the N?
The worst is when the typo is an actual word, but changes the entire meaning of the sentence. eg., "We will be putting together a casket for the Manager to let them know we're thinking of them while they are on leave." Or worse: when the crucial word "not" is accidentally left out of the sentence (a more common typo than you'd expect). "Employees shall use the balcony doors in the case of an emergency exit."
I worked for an agency in London. One client was a major international supplier and scheduled a conference call for 0700 US West Coast time. Several US offices joined, as did offices in Spain, Germany and Israel. It was 1500 in London and 1700 in Israel and 0800 in Seattle. It was an important call about a product launch and after half an hour, the lady in Seattle said, "I have to sign off now and go to work." A comprehensive, international WTF moment of silence followed.
OMG, the smell one has unlocked a new fear, LOL. I was out on medical/bereavement/vacation through November. My last day of work was Tuesday, and I didn't return to work until the end of the month. When I was going to the office, I would take my lunch for a day or two and leave it in the fridge. Wow what that would have smelled like
Every office I ever worked at cleaned out the fridge at the end of each week. They were ruthless too - if you left Tupperware, it was tossed in the garbage. People learned quickly that if you were out on a Friday, you asked a coworker to clean out your container for you. Most places were very strict on leaving food in the desk - no one wants to have to call in an exterminator. Mice will chew through wrappers and it’s not pleasant finding the evidence they leave behind.
Got my first real job at a startup right at the start of covid. Spent three years in and out of WFH just fucking about and getting high. Now I'm an apprentice at a construction site and I couldn't be happier.

And he would ask “is there anything we can fix for you?” So I would ask like “can we take this door off the hinges?” Or “well the couple of chairs we have up front broke, could we get new ones?” “The awning keeps trying to fly away, can we get that re-fastened?” “The fluorescents up front started flickering last week. Can we get new bulbs?” One time I said something like “we’ve asked if we can take the door down, waiting to hear if [GM] or [CFO] ever say yes or not.” Not realizing that technically I needed or could ask his say-so too 💀

Many many years ago I started my first job. The CEO was a slimy Frenchman in his mid 60s. One day he got toothache and went to the dentist. Decided he didn't want to get toothache any more, so had all his teeth removed. Result... dentures gave him hell so he would take them out and leave them on his desk for all to see. Yikes. True!!!
I once told a property manager to stop wasting my time with pointless calls for non-security related issues. I already put my notice in and part of the reason was because that company kept wanting us to do really stupid shit that wasn't security related (park in the middle of a bridge and take photos, supervise a maintenance technician, adjust an antenna, and more). I got a call from their Liaison manager begging me to do what they asked so they wouldn't get mad. I told him not unless he can point out what part of it was to maintain the safety of the property. He went down there himself.
Went from Helena, MT to Missoula, MT (120 miles) for training. The trainer's flight wasn't able to land at the airport due to fog. So, I went up to my Hotel room and watched Judge Judy and napped until the next day; then drove back to Helena.

At a multinational European company I worked for years back, a new senior vice president was introduced because the old one had quit his job. This was about a year before the company went belly up. The new one was rumoured to be hot sh.t, with degrees from MIT and Harvard, among other things. I actually met him, he was a short hispanic guy with quite an attitude, but flickering, restless eyes. I thought he was strange. After about four weeks or so, he was suddenly gone. It was as if he had been swallowed by the earth, no mention of him, no explanation, nothing. So I decided to drink coffee with the some of the secretaries. Bit of advise here: If you want to be successful, make damn sure that the secretaries like you, or start looking for a new job... Seriously! Anyway, after a few cups of coffee and some digging, I found that the guy was a con artist who had invented his whole CV! None of the stuff he had been boasting about was true! To spare the company the embarrassment, he had been given a golden handshake and been sent back to California, probably with some cops waiting at the gates in Cali to offer him some free accomodation.
i heard about a guy with 8(?) different remote jobs. He realized he could get all his work done for the day in ~2-3 hours, so he just worked really hard, and pulled 8 salaries

I found the file where my team members rated me on different matrix during my interview process. Person I liked the most, gave me the minimum score. After that I responded to that person last whenever they need anything from me.
A couple months after starting with my current employer, I added a new customer to our production environment and took our system down for all other customers causing a fast event. We started getting customer support calls a few minutes later. I immediately told my CTO and CEO what I was working on and what I think caused the outage. It took me another 10 minutes to fix it.
I found an executable online that I can plug in the number of minutes I want to keep my screen awake (and my Teams status a green checkmark). As I'm not a morning person, I turn on my work computer, run the executable for 480 minutes, and go back to bed for a few more hours. Most days at home I start work around noon.
I might know that person that messaged someone on teams and told them they were being annoying... Or at least i know someone else that did exactly that 😄
One morning I got into work, and I had new hardware for my work computer so I had to shut it off. The problem is that I was logged into the production server in Toronto RDP full screen. I found it so weird that I had to shutdown twice. 20 minutes later there's a red-alert wtf is going on with the server. My boss asked what happened and I didn't say I knew because I really didn't know what happened. You can't just press a button to bring up these servers. We had to call the server company to have them boot the server again. 30 minutes of downtime right at the beginning of the day, and when we were finally up, my boss called me into his office and showed me the log: James shutdown server at 8:50am. And I just froze for a few seconds, then it dawned on me: The first time I tried to shut down my computer, I shutdown the server. If I had just reset the server, it'd be back up with only a few minutes of downtime and no one would've guessed why. To top it off, I looked like a liar because I said I didn't know and acted like wtf the whole time. Thankfully my boss covered for me to his bosses.
My colleague recently came up to me and excitedly told me about a new law (in Australia, we are Australians, g'day) wherein employees can now refuse to pick up calls after hours if an employer calls. She was giddy that she would be able to refuse calls after 5. A few days later this same colleague calls me ...after hours. I didn't pick up. But I hope she picked up on the joke of it all. Somehow I don't think so.
Food in desks stories... Had one coworker who would place partially eaten food constantly in her desk drawer. One day she happened to open it to add a half eaten candy bar. When I looked down I saw cockroaches crawling all over the drawer. She just threw the candy bar in loosely wrapped then shut the drawer. A few days before my employer shut down the offices due to the pandemic, someone handed me a custom printed Coke can featuring one of our company's products as I walked through the offices. I don't like Coke and had intended to bring it home to my son. A few days later our offices closed. About nine months later my job went 100% virtual. I went in to clean out my desk and noticed it was sticky and figured it was due to cleaning due to Covid. Went in few months later for a laptop refresh with coworkers. Found out the can had ruptured and had been slowly leaking from my overhead and had been dripping all over my desk while the offices were closed. I love practical jokes so my coworkers thought this was something I did intentionally and didn’t think to look into it for a few days. 😂
I worked from Costa Rica for two minths, had permission by my immediate manager who told there was no policy against it, but when upper management got the phone bill, i had over $500 in charges and was fired. I was their top performer.
I have worked running billiard rooms, then in casinos as a dealer, a bookkeeper of a strip club chain, and now just under C suite execs of a payroll company. I could write books about the stuff I have been through or encountered. I laugh now at most of them, but at the time I was WTF-ing, and even now sometimes when I see stupid people at work or out in the real world as a customer myself. I think of all my experiences and conclude that some of the human population in America is devolving.
On the first day of my previous job, I was involved in a meeting. We were passing handouts around and I was sitting next to the CEO. I looked his way, ready to pass the handouts to him and called him by his first name, rather than "Mr."... I was mortified. lol
As Director of HR, in a large corporation, I have access to a lot of craziness. Had to let two employees go because they did the horizontal Bamba in a the Executive dining room - cameras were rolling.
I copied a co-worker one's comment to me about how she liked specific tasks done in our job to send to co-worker two to get their take on it.... sent it to co-worker one by mistake. They asked me if I had a problem with them. (They traditionally made a point of doing things that made less work for themself, and more work for others)
I worked in a hotel as a switchboard operator. It was a good job - I enjoyed getting paid to talk for 8 hours a day! But the cables for the front office computer system were an awful jumbled up mess, and ran along the baseboard underneath my desk. I am a very restless person, and have a very hard time sitting still, so I was constantly shuffling my feet. More than once, I accidentally kicked the cables, crashing the system for the whole front office - including reservations, front desk, convention services, etc 🙄🤦♀️😂 The maintenance guy quickly dubbed me “Crash”🤦♀️… I don’t think he liked me very much🤣🤣🤣🤣
At a previous job: It was my aecond full-time job ever and I had just started, was still getting to know the people, the processes, so I was quite stressed. After a while, I saw an opportunity for our company to participate at a job fair (I was in HR), so I kept asking my boss whether we have the budget to participate and if it would be beneficial for the company. After all it was decided to pass. The date of the forum came and I received a phone call from the job fair organisers asking me when are we coming because our spot is ready... It turns out that at the beginning, while I was stressed, my boss told me to participate and then, somehow, everyone forgot about it 😅 I wasn't laughing at the time as you could imagine...
I steel a bunch of "Swag" from the company to give away (sometimes for myself). FYI - these Swag is part of my department and I was the one who ordered/coordinates them. I tell myself that I'm "quality checking"
I live in a non English speaking country. My job is to go through written and data information and find things that are wrong. We have a colleague who is from a far away country and he writes he had "groin issues" instead of "writing issues" and everyone is dying of laughter from this. We have not told him yet..

During the 1980s I worked at a small 300 bed hospital as CHUC (certified health unit clerk) when we were informed the hospital was going to get a really wonderful hospital wide computer. I asked my director if I go to Maryland to train on the computer, please please please!!! She said no because administrative heads were going. It is not that I wanted to go to Maryland, been there done that. When I got my password, no training, I logged on. At some point I was blocked and couldn't move out the screen I was on. I was randomingly hitting keys when a window popped up reading " Are you sure you want to boot the system ". My first though 'is that Marylandisse for dumb Texan do you want go back to where you started?" my reply was the yes button. The entire hospital and all the clinics lost everything. I fes'd up the next day that I think I may have caused it? They didn't fire me. But I was always the first one considered of any training session on anything after that. They even helped me to become a patient care coordinator.
Our office secretary once received a lady at her desk asking for the director. She asked, is this for the catering of tomorrow’s event? As the lady was wearing quite a modest, dark blue ensemble fit for the catering peeps in our building. No, the lady replied, I am Danielle, the Director General! Hahaha my colleague wished she could disappear right then and there. And we laughed hard after hearing the story, still a good one. 😂 Same type of story of a high level lady at a corporate. She told me about the time she entered the board room where some men who hadn’t met her yet were already waiting. They asked her for a coffee. Which she happily brought them. The others come in, after which she sat down in the president’s chair, and opened the meeting, leaving them flabbergasted 🎉🎉🎉

Museum i was employed at was unknowingly in illegal possession/displaying of a mummy.
Mummy was donated to the museum the 80's. Was on display for 15 years. Then in the late 90's it was discovered that some of the paperwork was forged thereby making the mummy technically "smuggled contraband". So it needed to be taken off display.
Fast forward to 2018.. Due to the implending change management companies and us knowing the person who would be taking over. (Long story, this person had been fired from the museum in 2014 for sketchy things). So we staff didnt trust that person. A group of staff made it their personal mission to discover as much as they can about the mummies rightful origins. Through a long process we were able to discover the country of origin. And we were able to make a plan with the government of that country for some of our staff to travel to that country with the mummy. So in late 2018, a mummy was finally able to be reunited with its homeland.
That is wonderful that you and your colleagues were able dig through and trace that mummies origins!

@@CuriousAbtEverything Yes it was such an experience to go through. There are details that I think it's best not to share online but I gave a brief summary of the whole experience. It honestly is on the list of things that make me proud of the team and my entire time in the museum.

My coworkers told me a lot of stories about odd things happening from time to time in the collection area. You know little things like things not being where you left them, sounds that felt out of place and no one could find the source, doors opening on their own. The thing about these doors is that they are connected to a system that sounds an alarm in the entire collection area so if any of the doors is open longer than a set time then it goes off. So the door alarm suddenly going off in a section of the collection area where no one has entered that day is a bit scary. Also some reported an uneasy feeling of being watched while in the collection room. (Aside from the cameras of course). Oddly enough, all that stopped once a spiritual coworker started to do weekly visits to the mummy to just chat with her.
My experience starts when a coworker of mine and I had to pass through the collection area in order to get to the room beside it. The room is big and can be rented for parties or conferences. The collection area and this room share a wall together and there are huge double doors that connect them. (They can only be opened up from the collection area side). There is a door to the party room in which the public has access to but we had to move a big piece of furniture into that room that required us to use the huge doors.
My coworker and I signed out the keys to enter the collection area. There are 2 special keys and only 2 sets of those keys. Once one pair is signed out, then no one (not even the director) can sign out the other set as is protocol.
Now that the context is out of the way. My coworker and I were going through the collection area with this furniture and I asked him if I could say hello to the mummy. As it has become a custom for everyone to say hello to her. So I stop and say hello. (The mummy is in a containment box). My coworker also says hello and then asks if I would like to open the containment to get a closer look. I said "respectfully no". So after our hellos we continued to move the furniture into the next room. We open the huge doors, he enters first, we set up the furniture where it needs to be. And then we hear an alarm go off. So we immediately head back into the collection area and close the huge doors. But that doesn't stop the alarm. We start to back track through the collection area knowing we closed every door. Then we get to where the mummy is. And the door is open.. not only that, but the containment box is open.. and the lid, is up and askew. We both look at each other and immediately know it wasn't either of us. And it couldn't be anyone else as no one would be able to sign out the keys.
In that moment I shed a single tear from fear and concern. We then follow the protocol to close everything and I verbally tell the mummy that I am sorry if I offended it. As we are talking, the door on the other end opens slightly. At that point we continue to apologize as we make our way out of the collection area. Closing every door.
We immediately go to return the keys, and there are the other keys. In the safe, so we knew no one was messing with us and what we just experienced was real.

The project manager asked me to cover the front desk.
I said “ nope, no raise no front desk”
“What?”
I said “ I did everything my supervisor asked me to do and it hurt my number, so she denied my raise. So no raise no front desk. I will work the front desk for her when I get a raise and back pay.”
The project manager turned to my supervisor “well, Susan you heard her ‘no raise, no front desk’. It looks like you will be working the front desk for the rest of the day.”
Our project manager was a hard a-, you could hear everyone around me suck in air when I said no.
When they walked away, I let out a major sigh of relief.
I feel that one.
My managers used to do that to some people. They're the ones who assigned the caseload every day. And after months of keeping someone on the same caseload, they'd use that as a reason to deny the next raise, saying "you need more experience in the other caseloads (that we never assign to you)." They know how to pick their victims too because they know who will raise hell and who will take it lying down.
When I was employed at Macys, a man in a suit approached me and asked for my supervisor. I asked if he was there for an interview, and he said sort of. I escorted him to the waiting area and told him which manager was likely going to greet him. He asked me how long I’ve been working for the company, and I said about four months. He thanked me for my service and waited patiently. Later, my store manager met up with me and let me know that was the regional manager and I made a fantastic impression.
I worked in a small IT company for a big company, one day i accidentally deleted hundreds of prenotations around the country from a production DB, it took weeks to somehow restore part of them. That day, going back home in the car with the boss was really awkward until he said "did you understand the mistake u made?" "yes" "then it's ok."
Fast forward 8 years same thing happened for another big company, very similar mistake, he was there with me, i started hyperventilating, i was kinda mentally devastated... he puts his hands on my shoulders and said "relax man... it's ok, we can fix this (maybe). take 2 minutes to chill and come back."
He was a great boss.

A couple of these resonated with me. Some in a good way. Some... not...
The press conference one reminded me how, just this last summer, this service club I'm a member of was going to try and organize a community softball game for 4th of July. Those of us planning the event set up a meeting; it was me and two other people. About half hour to an hour after the meeting was supposed to start, I realized I had forgotten about the meeting; and was preoccupied working on something else... and it turned out the other two people who were going to be there had forgotten about it as well. One of whom was my own brother....
Another one - the one where someone texted someone that so-and-so was pissing them off, and they _were_ the so-and-so... One time some replied to a question I had asked, that another person had forwarded to them; but the person responding didn't delete the body of the email sent to them, which read, "Can you answer his question? He's driving me crazy."
Mind you, I was following up with them on something I had previously contact them about once, a _month_ prior. And that kind of BS is the reason I hate asking anyone anything, because there's been this sense my whole life that I'm just bothering anyone I talk to; and here's the proof.
Had a colleague who kept a small orange (clementine) in his drawer. It eventually dessicated / mummified to this dried, wizened shrunken head of an orange. He called it Clem.
If i wanted to hustle a little bit, i could easily maintain two remote jobs...

I once told my coworker (knowing it would get to my boss' boss) that I am going for an interview. I was offered a job but I didn't like it so I wasn't going to an interview, but at that time one other colleague was leaving to that company, and my direct boss was leaving as well (to a different place), so they panicked and gave me a pay rise to keep me there.
Our married department secretary (small IT group) was engaged in inappropriate behavior with the married director of said department. It was very specifically in the HR policy designated "inappropriate".
I used to casually mention crap to or infront of her that I wanted to get back to the director. Not often, just when I needed to circumvent the supervisor and manager. Neither were bright enough to know they were being played.
We brought in another woman and I left. They started harassing her when they found out her boyfriend was a person of color; writing her up for fake issues. She called me. I told her to casually mention in front of the secretary that she had reached out to me and I'd suggested she and I file a class action lawsuit for sexual harassment and discrimination. She mentioned it.
The harassment stopped. The write ups stopped. She was given a nice raise and a promotion. She took me out for dinner. I told her to feel free to use it at will.
1:24 The smelly cheese story reminded me of one time when my employers downstairs office neighbour moved out and for some reason, someone in that company left a packet of frozen fish in that offices kitchen freezer, left the freezers door open and turned it off. It was early summer...
I don't even dare to imagine what it smelled like in the empty downstairs office, but we had to keep our office kitchen's sink full of water for few weeks to stop the smell invading our office (it took a while to figure out where the stink was coming from). I felt sorry for the maintenance guy who had to remove the smelly fish and clean the freezer.
That was a parting shot from the former tenant to the landlord. Too bad your office caught the fall out. 🤢
I can relate the one about too much colleague sex. I was on a team of 40 people right after graduating college. Everyone on the team was between the ages of 22 and 30. Over half of the colleagues were sleeping with each other. The sexual tension was palpable.
Legit saw colleagues go out to their cars during a break and come back with messy hair and clothes. A memo was sent out asking everyone to cut it out during working hours.

If I read a typo in someone's email, I.E., the word "respond" and the person spells it "respobd" I look at my keyboard, the B is next to the N. I carry on with my day and don't worry about it. Now if they spell it "Respoqd" How the hell did you hit the Q instead of the N?
The worst is when the typo is an actual word, but changes the entire meaning of the sentence. eg., "We will be putting together a casket for the Manager to let them know we're thinking of them while they are on leave."
Or worse: when the crucial word "not" is accidentally left out of the sentence (a more common typo than you'd expect). "Employees shall use the balcony doors in the case of an emergency exit."

I worked for an agency in London. One client was a major international supplier and scheduled a conference call for 0700 US West Coast time. Several US offices joined, as did offices in Spain, Germany and Israel. It was 1500 in London and 1700 in Israel and 0800 in Seattle. It was an important call about a product launch and after half an hour, the lady in Seattle said, "I have to sign off now and go to work." A comprehensive, international WTF moment of silence followed.

OMG, the smell one has unlocked a new fear, LOL. I was out on medical/bereavement/vacation through November. My last day of work was Tuesday, and I didn't return to work until the end of the month. When I was going to the office, I would take my lunch for a day or two and leave it in the fridge. Wow what that would have smelled like
Every office I ever worked at cleaned out the fridge at the end of each week. They were ruthless too - if you left Tupperware, it was tossed in the garbage. People learned quickly that if you were out on a Friday, you asked a coworker to clean out your container for you. Most places were very strict on leaving food in the desk - no one wants to have to call in an exterminator. Mice will chew through wrappers and it’s not pleasant finding the evidence they leave behind.
Got my first real job at a startup right at the start of covid. Spent three years in and out of WFH just fucking about and getting high. Now I'm an apprentice at a construction site and I couldn't be happier.
I would talk to the CEO/owner of my company like he was a maintenance guy until I was reading an article about how large our company had become and googled the name of the owner, only for a very familiar face to pop up and my stomach to drop into the Styx 💀

But the few times I interacted with him, he would always be looking at like structural things and coordinating with the contractors, like making sure the drawers were repaired or when we added new shelving that it was done properly. And he would ask “is there anything we can fix for you?”
So I would ask like “can we take this door off the hinges?” Or “well the couple of chairs we have up front broke, could we get new ones?”
“The awning keeps trying to fly away, can we get that re-fastened?”
“The fluorescents up front started flickering last week. Can we get new bulbs?”
One time I said something like “we’ve asked if we can take the door down, waiting to hear if [GM] or [CFO] ever say yes or not.” Not realizing that technically I needed or could ask his say-so too 💀

Many many years ago I started my first job. The CEO was a slimy Frenchman in his mid 60s. One day he got toothache and went to the dentist. Decided he didn't want to get toothache any more, so had all his teeth removed. Result... dentures gave him hell so he would take them out and leave them on his desk for all to see. Yikes. True!!!

I already put my notice in and part of the reason was because that company kept wanting us to do really stupid shit that wasn't security related (park in the middle of a bridge and take photos, supervise a maintenance technician, adjust an antenna, and more). I got a call from their Liaison manager begging me to do what they asked so they wouldn't get mad. I told him not unless he can point out what part of it was to maintain the safety of the property. He went down there himself.

Went from Helena, MT to Missoula, MT (120 miles) for training. The trainer's flight wasn't able to land at the airport due to fog. So, I went up to my Hotel room and watched Judge Judy and napped until the next day; then drove back to Helena.

At a multinational European company I worked for years back, a new senior vice president was introduced because the old one had quit his job. This was about a year before the company went belly up. The new one was rumoured to be hot sh.t, with degrees from MIT and Harvard, among other things. I actually met him, he was a short hispanic guy with quite an attitude, but flickering, restless eyes. I thought he was strange. After about four weeks or so, he was suddenly gone. It was as if he had been swallowed by the earth, no mention of him, no explanation, nothing. So I decided to drink coffee with the some of the secretaries. Bit of advise here: If you want to be successful, make damn sure that the secretaries like you, or start looking for a new job... Seriously! Anyway, after a few cups of coffee and some digging, I found that the guy was a con artist who had invented his whole CV! None of the stuff he had been boasting about was true! To spare the company the embarrassment, he had been given a golden handshake and been sent back to California, probably with some cops waiting at the gates in Cali to offer him some free accomodation.
i heard about a guy with 8(?) different remote jobs. He realized he could get all his work done for the day in ~2-3 hours, so he just worked really hard, and pulled 8 salaries
pay transparency needs to be a real thing everywhere. I tell people i work with if they want to know how much i make they can ask. i will tell them. i will tell anyone that asks

Everyone has a test environment. Some people are lucky enough to have a separate production environment.
A couple months after starting with my current employer, I added a new customer to our production environment and took our system down for all other customers causing a fast event. We started getting customer support calls a few minutes later. I immediately told my CTO and CEO what I was working on and what I think caused the outage. It took me another 10 minutes to fix it.
I found an executable online that I can plug in the number of minutes I want to keep my screen awake (and my Teams status a green checkmark). As I'm not a morning person, I turn on my work computer, run the executable for 480 minutes, and go back to bed for a few more hours. Most days at home I start work around noon.

One morning I got into work, and I had new hardware for my work computer so I had to shut it off. The problem is that I was logged into the production server in Toronto RDP full screen. I found it so weird that I had to shutdown twice. 20 minutes later there's a red-alert wtf is going on with the server. My boss asked what happened and I didn't say I knew because I really didn't know what happened. You can't just press a button to bring up these servers. We had to call the server company to have them boot the server again. 30 minutes of downtime right at the beginning of the day, and when we were finally up, my boss called me into his office and showed me the log: James shutdown server at 8:50am. And I just froze for a few seconds, then it dawned on me: The first time I tried to shut down my computer, I shutdown the server. If I had just reset the server, it'd be back up with only a few minutes of downtime and no one would've guessed why. To top it off, I looked like a liar because I said I didn't know and acted like wtf the whole time. Thankfully my boss covered for me to his bosses.
My colleague recently came up to me and excitedly told me about a new law (in Australia, we are Australians, g'day) wherein employees can now refuse to pick up calls after hours if an employer calls. She was giddy that she would be able to refuse calls after 5.
A few days later this same colleague calls me ...after hours.
I didn't pick up. But I hope she picked up on the joke of it all. Somehow I don't think so.
Food in desks stories...
Had one coworker who would place partially eaten food constantly in her desk drawer. One day she happened to open it to add a half eaten candy bar. When I looked down I saw cockroaches crawling all over the drawer. She just threw the candy bar in loosely wrapped then shut the drawer.
A few days before my employer shut down the offices due to the pandemic, someone handed me a custom printed Coke can featuring one of our company's products as I walked through the offices. I don't like Coke and had intended to bring it home to my son. A few days later our offices closed. About nine months later my job went 100% virtual. I went in to clean out my desk and noticed it was sticky and figured it was due to cleaning due to Covid. Went in few months later for a laptop refresh with coworkers. Found out the can had ruptured and had been slowly leaking from my overhead and had been dripping all over my desk while the offices were closed. I love practical jokes so my coworkers thought this was something I did intentionally and didn’t think to look into it for a few days. 😂
I worked from Costa Rica for two minths, had permission by my immediate manager who told there was no policy against it, but when upper management got the phone bill, i had over $500 in charges and was fired. I was their top performer.
I have worked running billiard rooms, then in casinos as a dealer, a bookkeeper of a strip club chain, and now just under C suite execs of a payroll company. I could write books about the stuff I have been through or encountered. I laugh now at most of them, but at the time I was WTF-ing, and even now sometimes when I see stupid people at work or out in the real world as a customer myself. I think of all my experiences and conclude that some of the human population in America is devolving.
Typically a phone bill reimbursement is based on a certain amount per month. Not a big deal... companies seem to be aware of this.

As Director of HR, in a large corporation, I have access to a lot of craziness. Had to let two employees go because they did the horizontal Bamba in a the Executive dining room - cameras were rolling.
Strange, in my companies the hr would cover everything up and promote them, transfer included.
Some of these weren't just 'mistakes and errors' or 'poor business process', they were outright dishonest, fraudulent or theft.
So these vary from funny to wtf to oh god illegal. I didn't expect quite so much illegal!
My boss accidently sent us a list of payroll list with information. He ask us to delete. Too bad we all knew how he is overpaid..😅😅

They asked me if I had a problem with them. (They traditionally made a point of doing things that made less work for themself, and more work for others)
I worked in a hotel as a switchboard operator. It was a good job - I enjoyed getting paid to talk for 8 hours a day!
But the cables for the front office computer system were an awful jumbled up mess, and ran along the baseboard underneath my desk. I am a very restless person, and have a very hard time sitting still, so I was constantly shuffling my feet. More than once, I accidentally kicked the cables, crashing the system for the whole front office - including reservations, front desk, convention services, etc 🙄🤦♀️😂

At a previous job: It was my aecond full-time job ever and I had just started, was still getting to know the people, the processes, so I was quite stressed. After a while, I saw an opportunity for our company to participate at a job fair (I was in HR), so I kept asking my boss whether we have the budget to participate and if it would be beneficial for the company. After all it was decided to pass. The date of the forum came and I received a phone call from the job fair organisers asking me when are we coming because our spot is ready... It turns out that at the beginning, while I was stressed, my boss told me to participate and then, somehow, everyone forgot about it 😅 I wasn't laughing at the time as you could imagine...

I live in a non English speaking country. My job is to go through written and data information and find things that are wrong. We have a colleague who is from a far away country and he writes he had "groin issues" instead of "writing issues" and everyone is dying of laughter from this. We have not told him yet..
