There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to using the sheamoisture curling soufflé, I learned through trial and error. my hair is 3b, fine and low-ish porosity. Here is what I've learned: 1) I've gotten great results using a 5 or 7 row Denman brush to apply it through sections. I do this after applying the curl smoothie or milk (from the same sheamoisture line) in the same manner (with a brush in sections) to wet hair first. 2) Of note, the directions do say to allow it to dry some and then, if you diffuse, to use COOL air only. I've tried diffusing on warm air (before re-reading the instructions) and OOPS, it turned my hair into a sticky mess. So now I only use cool air setting or just air dry if I use this soufflé. 3) It does take some extra time to section and brush it through. So if I take the time to apply and style properly I do get really pretty, shiny, defined curls with a nice cast that can be easily scrunched out!
You have to watch “Manes by Mell” 4 curly hair diffusing mistakes that everyone makes and how to fix them! It’s a game changer 😊 Love you and your videos!
I’ve noticed a curious thing with Shea Moisture Souffle. If I let my hair air dry, it creates a nice gel cast. If I blow dry it, there is no cast and my hair feels oily. I guess that's what happened to you.
I just got the gel souffle by Shea moisture and I notice the same thing, I really like it though but using cold air on the dryer just makes it super hard to dry.
I LOVE the garnier curl jelly! I use it with a leave in and small amount of AG recoil (curl activator). I love how easy it is to find it in store, the price point and the fact that you can use such a small amount means it will last forever! I apply it scrunched in with LOTS of water :) the only negative is that it is not a cruelty free brand
I love the Shea Moisture Styling milk and smoothie but you're right a little of their products go along way! I recently purchased the Not Your Mother's Curl Talk line and so far I looove it! My hair is probably a mix of 2c, 3a curls. Would love to see you do a review on the Not Your Mother's line! ☺️
I like using the Shea Moisture coconut and hibiscus curling gel soufflé if it's coctailed with the shea moisture curl and style milk. I got this tip from an old BiancaReneetoday video. Almost no one and if not no one likes the gel soufflé because it leaves tge hair dry, oily and STICKY!! but with the style milk is amazing💜
I had the same problem with the Garneir! Had absolutely no volume the first time I used it. I discovered that I get great results when I use a VERY small amount and keep it about an inch away from my roots. To prevent frizz at the roots, I just spray a little leave in and I'm good to go.
Thank you! I bought the Curling gel souflé because so many youtubers loved it. I have the same type of hair as you, and I’ve tried to use this product since January, but I haven’t got the results that I wanted. Its just like you said, oily and try at the same time. However, what I like to do, is to use homemade flaxseed-gel first, and then a little bit of the curling gel soufflé on top. That ususally help to keep my hair hydrated and soft, and it helps with the frizz aswell.
I think they are for mine too, my individual hairs are very fine, like a baby's, but I have a ton of them lol. It's pretty thick actually. But the strands are so thin the Shea weighs them down. I wonder if the other would work? Edit:Corrected a typo. Thin not think. Lol
@@kirbypopstar5807 Yeah well they don't make products for Welsh/Celtic hair. So sorry you have to share. Our hair is boarding on impossible to work with lol.
First, for all the people talking about Shea Moisture products being too heavy - I have fine hair. Shea Moisture does make a few products for fine hair - you just have to find the right ones. I love the Fruit Fusion line. Works great for my fine, wavy hair. The one that Curly Susie used is definitely one of their heavy ones. Second - Curly Susie, I have a Jinri blow dryer, too (not the same model as yours) and I LOVE it as well! I went away for a weekend and took my travel blow dryer and it was BAAAAADDDD. Love my Jinri!! Third, when I looked up the ingredients for the Bioterra gel it has Polyquat-4 as the second ingredient. I know that the lower the number, the more water soluble they are, but still it does have Polyquat and is the second ingredient. That's what's kept me from trying it. My hair really doesn't seem to like Polyquats, so I avoid them. A lot of people seem to like that gel, though.
I've got to hand it to you! I'm older than you, and, never had the patience to try techniques to bring out my curls. Thankfully, I still have tons of hair to work with! That's the beauty of awkward frizzy hair in your youth! I'm really enjoying your 'research', more than you know!😊
I use the Shea and I use 1/4 of what u used on my entire head. I get a nice breakable cast and gorgeous ringlets. I have fine hair, 2c, 3a-3b curls. Thanks for the vid and info xo
Chelsy Abdulmuti sorry girl. I forgot to add that I use the Shea Milk cream first on very wet hair, then a tiny bit of the Shea gel mentioned in the video.
I absolutely love the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle. Did a braid out with it and it turned out amazing. Great definition and I had volume!
@@CurlySusie oddly enough, I have 3 different hair types in my hair. A little 3c, a lot of 4a, and a little 4b. I was kind of sad that your hair didn't take to it well, but everyone's hair is different! 💕
I love the souffle. I just dip my fingers in it twice for all of my hair. My hair is like yours. On me it forms a cast. I scrunch it into my hair then scrunch out after its dry. I don't know why it didn't work for you.
The Shea Moisture soufflé did the same thing to my hair no matter how little I used. Glad it wasn’t just me, I’m really new to this process and thought I had done something wrong! Great video, I’ll give the Garnier a try.
I actually really like the SM gel souffle. I don't find it to be oily at all, even if I accidentally apply too much. It looks a bit crunchy if I use too much. I just dip my 4 fingers in slightly and smooth it over all my hair using the praying hands method. Scrunch lightly with microfiber towel and air dry. I have 1c/2a hair that is very frizz prone.
I Really like the curl treat “jelly”. I mix a drop of the curl treat “cream” along with. Mix together and apply. I’ve recently learned that the curl treat “cream” has similar ingredients to Deva curl’s “coconut cream”. Kind of a dupe for people doing away with DC. It’s very concentrated. Probably will last forever. Super Creamy consistency. Both Curl treat jelly and cream go on sale for 4-5 bucks here in NY. Mostly natural ingredients. Good find for those reading this on a budget. Thanks for the side by side. I do not like shea butters styling products.. too heavy for my hair. Oily as well. I had same experience with the product you used in this video too.
I recently started using natural products on my hair and avoiding all the unnecessary products. I have the same Shea curling gel you just used and it leaves my hair the same as yours. I feel like I haven't had a good hair day since I've been using that particular product. Will give Garnier a try. Thanks for sharing video.
Shea Moisture has a variety of products to fit the different types of curly hair. I tried a few product that made my hair look exactly like your sad soggy side. So I left it aside disappointed, until one day my mum asked to try it, and her hair turned out amazing! She does have a beautiful big thick hair, thought. So there. My hair likes the curling soufle, again tiny amounts, but makes my hair shiny, curly and healthy. Love it!
Hi Susie, I have same hair type as yours and the Shea Moisture Gel Souffle is my beloved product. If I apply it same way as you did in your video, I get your same results. Instead I dilute it and use it to rinse my hair in the shower. I use a pump dispenser and place in there half Gel and half water. My hair are 3/4 shorter than yours, so after my shampoo (no conditioner after) , in a measuring container I place 4/5 pumps of the diluted product and 200ml ow water and I rinse my hair with that. Then it's the same procedure, like dripping wet hair I comb it, twist the strands where needed, scrunch and diffuse it. I gently pat away the drops of water on the ends. Results are a head full of fluffy shiny voluminous ringlets. No residue, it looks very natural as if no product was used
I was doing the curly method for 8 months and started blow drying my hair with a blow out brush once a week now. I think I might make a video on my channel of how easy it is! But I love the curly girl method but I didn't have enough time to diffuse my hair with no heat every day and it's so cold here in Jersey, too cold to wear it wet to let it air dry. I'm going to attempt it again during the end of Spring! I love your channel! I've been subbed for a while and am watching your channel grow! I will always appreciate your great tips!
@@courtneyrodgers8435 Because my second days don't look so good so I end up just throwing it up. I have frizz the second day even after a thick cast. 🤷
I live in Europe, so we don't have the option of returning products that don't work, which means I either have to find someone to give them to or find a way to make them work! I bought Kinky Curly curling custard and the first time I used it, I had a similar result to what you had with the Shea Moisture. But I perservered, and found that if I use about half the amount you used, and mix it with a little water in the palm of my hand, it works great. It's taking me forever to go through the tub, but I'm glad I experimented (I literally tried everything - mixing it in a spray bottle, adding leave-in conditioner to it, using it on soaking wet hair through to just damp hair, you name it).
Hey Susie! Love your videos! I've been following curly girl method for about 6 months now and I love trying out new products and was wondering if you have ever tried Kinky Curly curling custard? I love when you do your product reviews! It's so helpful!
I wish I'd seen this yesterday! Bought the shea souffle and my hair was just awful! My hair looked greasy and felt dry and stringy. I think I used too much but felt I needed that to form a cast. It was so horrible that I rewashed my hair and used my normal products. Strange how you have to try new products before you REALLY know how your hair is going to react. Love your channel by the way! I'd love to see you try Keracare natural textures leave in conditioner along with their defining custard. These products are AMAZING on my hair. Wonder if they'd suit yours too?
So you were the first one to introduce me to the bioterra, and it is my favorite gel now. I really have always loved mousse though, and for a while I tried the herbal essence mousse and liked it. While I was at sally’s Beauty the other evening, I saw that bioterra made a mousse without silicones! I bought it and tried it. Hands down it is my favorite product now! It provides volume, definition, and hold. And it was under $9. Just thought I’d mention it if you like a mousse with better ingredients.
Ummmmmm so they sent me that mousse... & it is amazing but since I am committed to not using sulphate shampoo on my hair, I don’t use it often & I don’t promote it. I don’t want to seem like I am biased towards Biotera either.... but it’s amazing for people who use silicones
I can't use any of the SM products. It doesn't matter how little I use it always makes my hair look and feel so gross! I have seen the GF and have been wanting to try it and after your review I think I might. I've recently been using the HE mousse and I really like it but I noticed something was different about my hair. I'm now convinced that it's the poly-whatever you said and I think I will still use it but not daily. Thank you so much for all your help. This video was so informative.
Tomar Crauswell I had the same result! A lot of comments say it works better for curlier hair but my hair is 3C with medium thickness and the product is still too much. I always get greasy and frizzy hair (somehow at once) when I use their styling products. Honestly, don’t really want to experiment with Garnier
I think it's a matter of porosity with Shae moisture. If you have high porosity it will penetrate into the hair shaft, but if you have low porosity it will just sit on the outside of hair shaft and build up.
My hair is more type 2 or three, I use the Shea moisture one and its great for me, my hair is pretty dry, so I need the oiliness from it to moisturize it. It's not a matter of the type of curl you have, it's about whether you have low porosity of high porosity hair which has to do which its ability to take in moisture and how well your hair works with protein
Like you this was terrible on my (2c) hair, looked like I’d stood in the rain! But my kids hair (4a) loved it, their hair is dry and I constantly need to add moisture every day but this keeps it much nicer and moisturised. This product is definitely designed for dry hair! Good review 👍🏼
The Shea moisture soufflé was the first product I tried for curly girl and my hair turned out TRAGIC.🤣 I haven’t touched it again, but I already had it, so I tried it.
Me, too. I loved the way it smelled, but I used way too much and my hair was a tragedy. I'm 2c/3a and fine, and I think it would work better on thicker, curly or hair.
I definitely used too much the first time and it was definitely tragic! 😂 I was too stubborn to take it back so kept trying. Less each time but still VERY bad results.
I have fine hair and when I try to use the Shea Moisture curling soufflé to just scrunch it‘s a disaster. BUT if I use it with my Denman brush to shape my curls they dry soft, without crunch, lots of bounce, and great hold.
I have the jelly and i love it! I also bought the smoothie a couple days ago, so i'm yet to see if i like it. The jelly gives me a great cast that i can easily scrunch out without loosing the hold. I have 2b hair so i need all the hold i can get!
Thank you for the follow up on the mousse..I used it today for the first time and LOVE the results, it seems my hair reacts the same way to products that you demonstrate, so the heads up on the polyquats is much appreciated. I'll try a refresh with just my bioterra tomorrow and see how I make out. Thank you so much for all these videos you do yourself and one other are my consistent go to's when I'm recommending a channel. You're consistent, reliable and never boring.
I love the garnier Jelly. My hair looks similar to yours, I'd say a tiny bit curlier, but it's quite thick and longer. I've been applying Cantu curl cream in my soaking wet hair then I'll apply a TON of this jelly. Literally 10 times what you did. But I do rake it through before doing prayer hands technique. My hair looks amazing, my curls are so defined and beautiful. I'd be happy to share some pictures with you if you like.
Great video! Such a difference in the two sides. I bought the Garnier stuff in a whim from Shopper’s. I have to plug my nose to use it 🙊 that smell is awful
I tried the shea moisture one a while back and I got the same results you did. Hair was stringy looking and dry. Thanks for the video, I am glad to know it wasn't just me using it wrong.
I LOVE the Shea Moisture souffle. I have 3b/3c curls and mix it with the Shea Moisture smoothie. I get a nice crunch that I scrunch out and it leaves my curls super soft and defined. I just use a VERY small amount of both, I mean way smaller than you used.
The Shea Moisture souffle is too much for my hair as well. Although I have started using it as a finishing gel I guess you would call it. After my hair is styled and dry, I barely touch 1 finger to the souffle and rub it between my hands, and use the praying hands on the sides, and lightly run my hands over the top to stop the frizz and fly aways. I have been happy using it that way.
I have thick, coarse hair (2b-2c) and have been experimenting with the Shea products. I used the gel soufflé once and used way too much. Couldn’t crunch it out. Had great curls but the texture was so dry and nasty. Now I am using a tiny amount ( like the size of a pencil diameter) mixed with Shea Restorative conditioner and it is working much better! And only on the hair shaft, not the roots. I think this container will last 5 years!
I bought the garnier one a couple weeks back and I love it so much. My hair is a bit curlier than yours, almost between 2c and 3a but I use a very little amount. Just enough to coat 2 fingers for each side of my head, and don’t apply to my roots. I use very small amounts of the R&B leave in by lush, a spray of the Maui Moisture oil mist, a dab of devacurl supercream and then the garnier jelly. Works pretty well most days occasionally looks a bit stringy at the very top
Very informative! When I was a Curly Girl Beginner, I had read about Shea Moisture and tried it not realizing that it was not meant for my fine hair texture. Lesson learned (and it smelled so nice!). Anyhoo, I love your videos so much because you do the work for us and believe me, it’s appreciated! I do want to try the Garnier product and will only use an itty bitty amount. Thanks again for you hard work to keep us informed! Hugs from Louisiana!
I would love to see a video where you cocktail the two products that you use in this one video just to see if your hair would end up being healthy looking and kind of shiny. Please use this idea
Great review Susie thank you! I have the exact same hair type as you and I find some of the Shea Moisture products to be a bit heavy as well - my hair is more dry than porous so oils often end up just lying on top of the shaft and not imparting moisture in any way...I just end up with oily, flat hair.
I love the sheamoisute line. I use the curling smoothie with the soufflé. You don’t need a lot at all. And wet your hands before applying. If you use too much, your hair becomes sticky.
Ooh! I just bought the fructis gel to try based on this review and so far I am impressed! I wasn’t expecting much as I haven’t had good luck with the brand. Thank you for the review!!
I love the Garnier jelly on my somewhat fine 3a hair (with some bits of 2c and 3b in there). My hair is very long at the moment, nearly down to my but, and this is one of the few products that is economical because I need so little. It gives great definition on me relative to standard gels. Not sure how it will work on shorter hair, as I’m getting a cut soon, but this is one of my favorite products. I often use in conjunction with Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler.
I have the Shea moisture and I had similar issues. One thing it is really good for is if you have frizz on your non wash day, you can use a tiny amount and it helps with frizz even in very humid/rainy conditions
I have hair similar to yours and I love the garnier curl treats. I apply the curl treats defining smoothie using praying hands and then scrunch in the jelly and 1 pump of deva curls frizz free volumizing foam. This combo creates a slight cast that softens to such pretty curls!
I had the same experience with the Shea Moisture soufflé. I tried it once and haven’t gotten the courage or an off day to try again. It seemed like it wasn’t really for my hair type which is similar though less evenly curly to yours. It just made it look like a hot oily unkempt mess. I wish they would list which type of curls the products work best on to prevent wasting money. I was hoping you’d have a better experience that could shed some light on how to use it.
Omg Susie! I thought I was the only one that was getting my hair weighed down because of shea moisture. I thought my hair just wasn’t compatible with the curly girl method. Guess I’ll give the garnier a go, seems like it worked rly well for your hair. Nice video!💘😝
I just bought the shea moisture one and it worked great for me so I was kinda surprised, since my curls are pretty similar to yours. For me, it really helps with definition and it minimizes the amount of frizz I get, as long as I only use a tiny amount.
wow. so glad you shared this product comparison. I realize all hair types respond differently. 3 weeks into my curly hair journey I have been so overwhelmed trying to find the best products for my fine, short classically curly hair. I do own the Garnier Fructis Jelly, i like it well enough but as you illustrated it does diminish volume. And my hair is much finer than yours, it was good to see that it's not "me", and so the journey will continue. And btw I am now a subsscriber of your channel. Keep the vids coming.
On the note of how much product to use: Your video on the mousse was really helpful, I thought my hair hated mousse in general, turned out I was just using wayyy too much! Sticking to golf ball size amounts makes a huge difference! 😁
Thank you for sharing! I bought the Garnier Fructis jelly and smoothie, but they build up so fast in my hair! Now I know I'm just using too much. I'm still looking for my fave styler.
Yay another review! I’m out here in Newfoundland and I love your reviews because stuff that has hold on the mainland may not have Atlantic Canada levels of hold, so I can trust when you say stuff has a strong hold vs. not, holds up to humidity vs. not it actually will.
The first time I used the Shea Moisture one my hair ended up just like yours did; it just looked greasy and horrible and I was annoyed because its actually relatively expensive here in the UK (£12.99 I think). I’ve learned that it actually works much better if I style with a cream and then with the amount you used for one section, literally just scrunched through my entire hair immediately after the cream. I do like creams for volume but I find they just don’t have enough hold sometimes and adding just a tiny amount of this does really help. Love your videos.
Thanks for this-I’ve recently started using the Shea Moisture anti-frizz Max-hold gel and while the consistency is more loose than I anticipated, the hold is truly amazing, so I’m glad you mentioned that Shea Moisture products go a long way and you don’t have to be heavy-handed with them. My curl is mostly 3a/b, so I do t think the soufflés are meant for my texture. These videos are so helpful!
🦄😻😊The Shea Moisture is better if you mix a tiny bit of it with a cream styler. It’s even better to use on dry hair to smooth down frizz or fly aways. I can only use the smallest amount of it, I’d say like three pea-size amounts. Give it another try, once you get the proportions right, it’s really nice!
I tried the garnier jelly a few weeks ago and omg I hated it. No volume and felt thick and heavy. I thought for sure the bad one in your video was gonna be the jelly, but I was surprised to see that it was the souffle lol Looks like I won't be trying that one out. I'd be interested in seeing you try the jelly again with a lesser amount or just an update.
My hair type is very similar to yours, and I used the Shea moisture gel a few years ago, and it worked well for my hair. My hair is also very dry, so maybe that is why it worked for me.
I love the Kinky Curly Curl Custard, which is a similar product. I used it about 5 years ago but switched to another product at one point. I recently tried it again and I love it.
I have lots of volume soft wavy hair I’ve started using mousse instead of gel which used to leave my hair flat not much curls. With mousse it gives beautiful full curls and scrunching no blow drying so easy and out the door! Loving it! I like the Cantu leave in conditioner keeps my hair healthy. Have a few Garnier products but none of these yet I like the shampoo/conditioners.
I was thinking about buying a hair gel because making the flax seed gel is too much effort since I didnt ever end up ever using it all in time before it went bad. Now I find out from you about this souffle option :P I usually LOVE shea moisture products since I have a similar hair type as yours I was hoping that the souffle would work out well....
Have you tried Aunt Jackie’s flax seed curling gel? I just tried it recently and it’s worked amazingly on my 2b/2c hair. It’s like $7 for a 15oz tub at Target 🙂
I don't know if they changed the formula recently or if you weren't applying enough to your hair, but I get a great cast and definition after diffusing from Shea Moisture gel souffle. The amount you put in one section of your hair I apply to individual sections of my hair. Mine is probably the same thickness as yours with slightly looser curls. I also let it sit before diffusing. I really think you should give it another chance.
I have medium to coarse hair and whenever I use the shea moisture gel I only use a small amount otherwise it will weight down my hair. If I use too much of it, it gives my hair a sticky feeling too. I love this she moisture gel with miss Jessie's pillow soft curl cream. This combo is my Holly grail.
Currently sat watching this video with terrible gooey hair after using the Shea soufflé 4 hours ago. Just terrible. No cast to scrunch out. I’m glad I found this video. I think I’ll just use no gel for now until I’ve got the hang of using all the other techniques I’ve needed to learn.
I use that Shea product and I love it. I use about what you did but all over my head and it’s really wonderful. I diffuse or air dry and both come out beautifully. I have thick coarse 2c 3a waves/curls. Big fan of it just have to mindfully use it!
OMG thank you so much for this review, I just came across your videos and love them. I am starting (as per today the CG routine, simplified version as I am a 15 minutes shower/hair/breakfast out the door in the the morning. Yesterday I went to buy the Shea Moisture coconut but the shop was out of stock and thank God for that. I believe I have similar hair as yours but not as curly ... yet.... I was born with very curly hair but now at age 49, due to colour and damage, my hair looks like a fizzy mop on the top while I still have nice defining curls underneath from the top of my Earline down, but they get so matted within minutes from brushing them...its so frustrating. Thank you again for your inspiring videos, can't wait to have my curls back and no fizz
(Ignore the name.. using my hubbys RUclips account ) I don’t know my exact hair type but I do use the Shea Moisture Gel and I’m happy with it. It does form a cast on my hair. I use the Shea Moisture Shampoo, conditioner and a small amount of mousse along with it, that may make the difference. Thanks for your videos, it’s been years since I’ve been able to wear my hair curly :)
Suzy I’m a photographer and would like to suggest another light to brighten your hair to better see the definition. I think this would help ‘lighten up your dark hair’ 😉
Love your channel! I have a similar hair type (2c) but more fine and sparse hair. Tried the SM curl souffle twice and got the same result as you at the first time. Second time it was surprisingly satisfying on the wash day but I have used such a small amount that I couldn't barely see the gel on my fingers. Only one dip with four fingers. For my whole head. I guess the amount you was using for the half of your hair was way too much. Unfortunately the second day my hair was stringy, oily and a little bit frizzy. So I didn't use the souffle again, I suppose it is too heavy for my hair. BTW: I like the Biotera gel but Polyquaternium 4 is the second ingredient ... ;-)
SM: coconut line is for REALLY thick hair. I think it just wasn’t meant for Susie’s hair!!! The only thing from the line I was able to use was the milk and I use the tiniest amount!!! One that is a hit is the Mop Top custard. Loads of curly you tubers like it.
I think the shea moisture one you used if for really thick dry hair. It's horrible when you try a new product and it doesn't work isn't it 😣 I get so dissapointed xx
I really like the Shea moisture one. I have a mix of 2 c at nape and 3c on top, fine but full. But. I use it quite a bit differently. I Always use the LOC method then apply a small amount of almond oil at the end to seal it all in. Then I scrunch with water until I get smooth curls . I also use a good bit more product, from ends to base and Never use a diffuser with it - I always get bad results if I use a diffuser with this one. End result is solid, soft, and bouncy curls 😊
Sweet Suzy----thank you for sharing this video---glad to know it wasn't me... I tried the Shea SOuflee and looked like I had "Goooooped" the stuff on my hair---it was horrible! still not sure about that Garnier---your hair has had so much more shine with other products but I suppose in a pickle the Garnier would work ok.....perhaps the shine just didn't show...but typically you have so much better shine!
Thanks for sharing this!!!! I have used the shae moisture gel once and I had the worst hair. Most of their products are too heavy for my hair also. But....... I was on a live aboard boat in the Caribbean last week and I was frantic about what to use for my hair. This is for scuba diving. I had a good outcome using the heavy Jamaican Black Castorol Oil Strengthen and restore conditioner. I would wet my hair before the first dive of the day and then apply a generous amount of the conditioner on my hair before my dive. When I came up after each dive I would rinse my hair and then reapply the conditioner. At night I would cowash and leave a little other conditioner in my hair till morning. I did 3 1 hour dives 6 days in a row and found a way to care for my hair during a scuba diving trip!!! Otherwise I don’t use Shae Moisture I’m still in the beginning stages of my curl journey and sure love your videos!!!!!!! Thank you. 😊🌊🐬
Appreciate that you did a quick follow up on the mousse. I’m a 2B/C, Low-Po hair and am envious of people that can use the Shea Moisture line but it’s way too heavy for me. Have you tried the Kinky Curly Curling Custard? Similar type product but actually works for me.
My 3b hair likes the SM souffle. You are right about needing a very small amount, but additionally, I keep it far away from my roots. Your hair probably just doesn't need a product that is so heavy. :)
Bridget Williams my hair likes it too! I think I use quite a bit but I have really long hair. I really like to use a little bit of the curl and style milk too, good combo for me!
I tried the Shea moisture products last year and I had the same results as you Susie. The only product I like from this brand is the Black Castor oil shampoo. All the other ones are too heavy for me. I haven't tried the Garnier Curl Treat yet. And yes, I did crack up when you showed your bad side... soooo funny!
I think shea moisture products work good for very coarse dry and wavy hair. I love that curling souffle. But hate all things deva curl lol. Everyone's different!
My hair really likes the soufflé. I use it after putting in leave in conditioner and also add a little of the curl and style milk that combo works well on my hair. I have thick long hair. The herbal essence mousse makes my hair super flaky o used to use it for years so glad I’m finding other products to try!
I just got a bunch of Shea Moisture free today so looking for tutorials since I’ve never used it. I have fine hair so I worry it’ll be too heavy for my hair... thanks for the warning! I’ll try it on a weekend. 😉 😆
Thanks for another great product comparison! I’ve had good luck with Garner in the past and not so much with SM. I have to use SM in the rotation and not on a regular basis or it’s overwhelming. The one gel I love is Kinky Curly Knot Today Curling Custard. A dab will do me with it too. If I ever decide to change up my holy grail I’ll give the Garnier a go. :)
Yeah i like the shampoo and cond. Shea butter but their hair gel does leave my hair oily and fricken frizzy at the same time, the only one that works is the black Jamaican extra hold gel. Thanks so much for the video bcz im looking for new products. ❤ ❤
Hi Guys! thx for the video, Susie :) I used Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk, and I had the same results as you on the left. I thought I used it the wrong way, but now I see the product may not be for me (2b). Such a shame the Garnier jelly is not available in Poland ;)
Wow what a difference in the 2 sides ....I was on the fence about the jelly n soufflé....my hair I more wavy than curly...but I’m still early in my CH journey n I’m seeing more curls pop out then more I use curl friendly products....thanks sooooo much for all your reviews n recommendations....tried the Shea Moisture hair milk for first time today....justly is still out🥴 has anyone else tried it? Thanks Curly Susie for all your honest assets....you go girl💞💞💞💞💞
I really like the milk. I used 100% protein free products and the tiny amount of protein in the styling milk is just enough to be a curl activator for my wavy hair. As with most shea butter stuff, a little is all I need.
There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to using the sheamoisture curling soufflé, I learned through trial and error. my hair is 3b, fine and low-ish porosity. Here is what I've learned:
1) I've gotten great results using a 5 or 7 row Denman brush to apply it through sections.
It’s a game changer 😊
Love you and your videos!
I thought about Mel when I saw her diffusing too 🙈
I’ve noticed a curious thing with Shea Moisture Souffle. If I let my hair air dry, it creates a nice gel cast. If I blow dry it, there is no cast and my hair feels oily. I guess that's what happened to you.
I noticed the same
Tatiana Kuvaldina the instructions say to use the cool setting on your hair dryer...have you tried that?
I just got the gel souffle by Shea moisture and I notice the same thing, I really like it though but using cold air on the dryer just makes it super hard to dry.
I LOVE the garnier curl jelly! I use it with a leave in and small amount of AG recoil (curl activator). I love how easy it is to find it in store, the price point and the fact that you can use such a small amount means it will last forever! I apply it scrunched in with LOTS of water :) the only negative is that it is not a cruelty free brand
Chloe A do you use the curl jelly first or the recoil? What type of curly hair do you have?
I really like the As I Am curling jelly. It does come in a tub. Leaves my hair soft and not oily at all.
That is what I use too and really like it. It is not near as thick as these two that she used.
Shea Moisture products are too much for my fine/thin hair.
Marlene Flanagan i have think hair so let them come lol
Products like Shea are meant for thicker hair. They make thick, coils look amazing. Lighter gels are excellent for thinner, curly hair👩🏻🦱👩🏼🦱👩🏾🦱
I think they are for mine too, my individual hairs are very fine, like a baby's, but I have a ton of them lol. It's pretty thick actually. But the strands are so thin the Shea weighs them down. I wonder if the other would work?
Edit:Corrected a typo. Thin not think. Lol
Marlene Flanagan well no shit it’s a natural hair brand 😂
Hey:) do you then blow dry your hair or let it air dry? Does your hair get oily if you blow dry it and use the Shea moisture one?
Hope to get the same results
I absolutely love the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle. Did a braid out with it and it turned out amazing. Great definition and I had volume!
Good to know!! What is your hair type??
@@CurlySusie oddly enough, I have 3 different hair types in my hair. A little 3c, a lot of 4a, and a little 4b. I was kind of sad that your hair didn't take to it well, but everyone's hair is different! 💕
I love the souffle. I just dip my fingers in it twice for all of my hair. My hair is like yours. On me it forms a cast. I scrunch it into my hair then scrunch out after its dry. I don't know why it didn't work for you.
Do you use other products with the souffle to style your hair?
@@cicerchia2238 yes a mousse
The Shea Moisture soufflé did the same thing to my hair no matter how little I used. Glad it wasn’t just me, I’m really new to this process and thought I had done something wrong! Great video, I’ll give the Garnier a try.
It’s really good of you Susie to try out all the different products
Why wash it every day instead of doing one or two good curly wash days a week?
Good to know-- thanks Zoe. I got the Kinky curly ad it was a disaster but will try it the way you suggest. I" in Canada and we can't return, either :/
@@StephanieConn_eh Hope it works for you!
Same for me. My hair is so dry. But I am just starting out the curly girl method, so I'll see how it goes!
Sorry i don't understand. This souffle is good for low or high porosity?
Native American/White girl here with swavy hair, the soufflé works beautiful for my 2a hair! Low porosity, high density, fine hair
Same haha
Me, too. I loved the way it smelled, but I used way too much and my hair was a tragedy. I'm 2c/3a and fine, and I think it would work better on thicker, curly or hair.
Same!
Same. Lol
Leslie Molengraaf I hate the smell too and it stays after it dries😖
Ahaha, I donno why this cracked me up. The things we do for our curls 🙊
I am so afraid of trying some products. Thank you for trying & making videos about those products. Very informative.
Terry Hendrix I use a bigger amount of the Garnier for my hair to get a cast. Works good.
Jennifer C Thanks, Jennifer! I’ll give it a try (using more!)
You are my favorite Curly Girlie. Thanks for all the great advice!
With the shea moisture a little goes a long way. You can't pile it on. I had that experience when I first got it.
Do you still use it?? Do you like/love it??
I love the Garnier jelly on my somewhat fine 3a hair (with some bits of 2c and 3b in there). My hair is very long at the moment, nearly down to my but, and this is one of the few products that is economical because I need so little. It gives great definition on me relative to standard gels. Not sure how it will work on shorter hair, as I’m getting a cut soon, but this is one of my favorite products. I often use in conjunction with Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler.
Those jellies are a lot thicker than the As I Am Jelly that I use. Maybe you could try it and review.
Rebecca Brock The As I Am curling jelly is great!!! I have fine waves and it works great!
I will love love love for you to do a review on ouidad gel.
I was so impressed that I found the Shea moisture line at Walmart, here in Halifax!
I’ll put an update at the end of my next product video sort of like I did with the mousse!!
I started using the Bioterra gel a few months ago and haven’t looked back since! It’s the best gel I’ve ever found and I’m so glad you recommended it.
I tried the Garnier one a few months back, and it didn't do much for me. Thanks for trying these and GTK about the Shea Moisture.
I absolutely love the the shea moisture curling gel souffle
(Ignore the name.. using my hubbys RUclips account )
I don’t know my exact hair type but I do use the Shea Moisture Gel and I’m happy with it. It does form a cast on my hair. I use the Shea Moisture Shampoo, conditioner and a small amount of mousse along with it, that may make the difference.
Thanks for your videos, it’s been years since I’ve been able to wear my hair curly :)
Love product reviews , thank you for this !!! I plan on posting my curly journey and hopefully I can start reviewing products as well !

Thank you. 😊🌊🐬
Love the Biotera gel! Saw one of your videos and tried it. Thanks for sharing.
Kimmy it’s not a mousse and hasn’t flaked in me in the months I’ve been using it.
I actually love the Curling Gel Soufflé (my hair is thick, 2b/2c waves), but seeing how well your hair did with the Garnier, I’m going to try it!
As with most shea butter stuff, a little is all I need.
lardun223 thanks...yes I agree, with these formulations a little is all that is needed....a concept I’m still getting used to LOL 😆
