I swapped None with Catch 33 because None is the release on which Meshuggah introduce the sound that defined them until Nothing. Also because Catch 33 and "I" feature programmed drums instead of Tomas "playing" so I discarded them for that reason because Haake's drumming is a crucial part of that band's sound. Started listening to Meshuggah in 1999.

    8) The Violent Sleep Of Reason - despite having one of their greatest compositions in Clockworks, along with a couple of other decent tracks, the album sounds Soooo by the numbers when it comes to their previous releases, that I find it insultingly bland.
    7) Contradiction Collapse - only because I havent listened to the album as much, and am not much of a thrash fan. However I do think that it was definitely a great debut with an interesting approach to the thrash sound, which made the genre sound quite fresh.
    6) Obzen - Yeah, it has Bleed, and a number of other great songs, but for some reason its not an album I have a desire to revisit, and Im actually not sure if Ive ever listened to it in one go.
    5) Koloss - It has some of their grooviest material which sounds deceptively simple, but has details that just make them something more than what can be seen on face value.
    4) Destroy Erase Improve - I have not listened to this album as much as I should, but just based on what I remember it has some of their most creative ideas ever, especially melodically because their mix of thrash and jazz fusion influences really shine through out of all of their releases, and I do wish that they come back to something a bit more like this with future releases.
    3) Nothing - I have Nothing much to add to this, except that I definitely prefer the 2006 re-recorded album, but all in all most of the tracks are awesome in how mind bending the grooves are.
    2) Chaosphere - Everybody talking about Bleed when it comes to Haakes drumming, But forgetting what a Mindfuck New Millennium Cyanide Christ is... or for that matter the entire album in itself. Probably their harshest and most abrasive sounding record theyve done. Also, as a fan of nu-metal, the second half of Corridor of Chameleons is one of the greatest nu-metal grooves done by a non nu-metal band, period.
    1) Catch 33 - One of my all time fave albums, and imo Meshuggahs magnum opus. Its perfect from start to finish, with their bleakest, heaviest and industrially depressing sound theyve ever achieved, as well as their most creative musically since Destroy Erase Improve, imo. An album which you put on and only stop listening when its done.

My list is close to yours but I would swap destroy Erase improve with nothing, and Obzen with Chaosphere. Nothing's a good album but it was a transition record for them. It was the bridge between their old and new sound, and I think the albums that came after nothing were a definite improvement over it. And I don't dislike Chaosphere, I just think it didn't really do anything that different from destroy Erase improve. It's basically just DEI 2.0. I always rank DEI above it because it was more influential in retrospect

    • @19RaxR91
      @19RaxR91 4 года назад

@@ethann9433 First of all, thanks for chiming in, and I respect your opinion.
The thing is, if anything then I think that Chaosphere was more influential than DEI, because most of whom have since ripped them off havent achieved Anything much more than what was released on Chaosphere (and to some extent, Nothing as well). There are only a couple of bands, imo, that actually took the influence, and made out of it something of their own, like Textures, Car Bomb, Deftones in their 2010 and 2012 albums, Tesseract and Animals as Leaders (who actually could be argued to be equally influenced by DEI as the rest), to name some.
Also, Nothing being called a ''transitional'' album is not something I would consider a valid argument, because imo Every album of theirs has transitioned into somewhat new territory - with the exception of The Violent Sleep of Reason, of course.
With that said, once more nothing but respect about your opinion, and I guess we certainly agree about one thing - Catch 33 is a masterpiece.

Agree. I actually don't consider Meshuggah as djent. I think that djent bands are the derivative of Meshuggah, and Meshuggah themselfs are a beast of their own. Also, most djent bands actually have a quite predictive and uninnovative rhythm pattern and rely solely on riffs, whereas Meshuggah has amazing solos too.

    1. Obzen is perfect
    2. Catch 33 is perfect too but the drums are programmed
    3. Nothing is has the best grooves but also a couple so-so chugalug songs near the end (nebulous, obsidian and spasm )
    4. Chaosphere is the most abrasive, cold, off-timed, off-putting album for metal normies, and i love it. ive listened to it the most. all the songs are great and its a fast heavy listen. but objectively the above 3 are superior
    5. Koloss is great too. has one of the most soulful beautiful outro tracks. it has a very crisp sound and production, maybe too much so. It also has the best cover artwork of all their albums 🔥
    6. Destroy Erase Improve has terrible cover artwork, but is the first “djent” album ever and starts off with one of their best songs ever with the best breakdown ever( future breed machine). this is their last album that had songs with melody and a hint of thrash. Sublevels is a stellar fuckin song and sadly will be the very last song with melody and clean singing from this band. Frederik Thordendals Special Defects picks up where this style of Meshuggah left off🔥
    7. the Violent Sleep of Reason has the second best cover artwork. it has lots of sludgy dark chuggy songs. ever songs lyrics are great of course, but some of the songs are too chuggy. still a banger though
    8. Contradictions Collapse sounds like Metallica with a hint of Alice in Chains-type grunge, lots of time changes with a jazzy very talented drummer. theres even a six string proto- djenty riff or two in a couple different songs. this is what Metallica should’ve sounded like after and justice for all. they wouldve had to kick out Lars though lol
all these albums get played at least once a month for me👍👍
    Honorable mentions: the “I” ep 🔥 a 20
    minute long song
and Frederik Thordendals Special Defects- Sol Niger Within 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥- your not a fan of “djent” until you listen to its creator’s solo project album. its like a Destroy Erase Improve part two, mixed with Pink floyd/Tool. the darkness within!

The things they have done on Koloss and TVSOR from a musicians standpoint are far more inventive than on any of their other records. It's just that the things and tweaks they have been coming up with are far less obvious than bleed or Dancers.

    1. obZen - Killer songs such as Combustion, Electric Red, Bleed & Dancers. Production is great and this album feels uniquely cold and grey just like the artwork.
    2. Catch 33 - Mindbending ride showing Meshuggah at it's creative peak.
    3. Chaosphere - Wildest Meshuggah album to listen. This is probably their tightest paggage and the sound is just impressive and harsh.
    4. Koloss - This feels amusingly like a "commercial" Meshuggah album. I just love most of the songs here, like The Hurt..., Break Those Bones & Swarm. Not as exciting album as a whole compared to the top 3.
    5. Destroy Erase Improve - Great songs and lots of creativity. However couple tracks feel a bit weak and the album just as a whole doesn't have the same groove as the later ones.
    6. Violent Sleep of Reason - best sounding Meshuggah album but unfortunately apart from Clockworks, the songwriting is just boring. This album does everything right on paper but lacks all the big moments that stick to your memory and make you want to listen to it again.
    7. Nothing - Some cool songs, but lots of stuff that I don't like that much. Overall the sludginess of this album is a bit too much to diggest at one go. Original album sounds too harsh and thin, the re-issue sounds too polished and lifeless.
    8. Contradictions Collapse - I like Erroneus Manipulation and Cadaverous Mastication but overall I'm not into this jazzy prog thrash.

My opinion, doubt anyone will agree with number 1 but the pure CHAOS is just unbelievable and I purely believe it’s their most complex album other than Nothing and Catch 33 but more musically than lyrically. I mean Concatenation is just categorical chaos and has the weirdest solo that for some reason just works. An album that's close to my heart

    8. Koloss- Not because it's bad, but the others just stand higher
    .
    7. Contradictions Collapse- Amazing album, the one that started it all. The progy fusion solos are a must-listen, and some of the best Frederic has ever written.
    6. The Violent Sleep of Reason- I WORSHIP the tone and production of this album. I hope they never stop using real amps again.
    5. Chaosphere- Although they started the "djent" style with Destroy Erase Improve, this one has even more emphasis on the riffs, and those are some killer riffs, some of them my all time favorites
    .
    4. obZen- Probably the most savage album they ever made. The tone, the songs, the themes, absolute monstrosity. Contains the best song they ever made- Dancers of a discordant system
    3. Destroy Erase Improve- The one that made them what they are, if Contradictions Collapse was the conception, Destroy was the birth
    .
    2. Catch Thirtythree
    - Actually the last one I really got into, but when I finally did... Holly shit, I'll never view music in the same way. This album is a variation on theme (or a few), just like the did in classical, but has a more rhythmical focus. The songs are just insane, riffs are more than brutal, and the innovation in songwriting is seconded only by Destroy Erase Improve.
    1. Nothing- This is like Master of puppets for Metallica, or The Number of the Beast for Maiden, not the first, or not the root of everything, but the CLASSIC one, the one that got it all and a loud
    .
Disclaimer! The first four are honestly interchangeable depending on my mood. I actually like their whole discography.
EDIT: This is actually my ranking based on the enjoyment I get from listening, I really can't rank by any other parameter, it just wouldn't be fair.

overall I prefer the evolution they took with the EP "I" and almost everything after it above almost everything before, with some exceptions song-wise. The drumming and the bass drive, the vocals, the guitar-tones, the rhythmic creativity and the soloing got better with every album, leading to the exceptional and most outstanding track from their latest album, "Clockworks".
