    So, in college I spent several nights "beach watching" in Galveston to look for Green, Loggerhead and Kemp's turtles nesting. Because of the disaster the conservation group I worked with had switched from protecting the nests to harvesting them.
    We would mark the locations of nests with flags and then specialists would come in the morning to dig up and recover the eggs to move them to the hatchery. There, we would hatch the clutch and raise them for a few weeks until they were past the "90% die to predation" stage before releasing them back into the gulf. Honestly? Some of the most rewarding work I've ever done.

    • @taylorlbritton
      @taylorlbritton 5 дней назад +1

      @Nylon_riot I guess i dont mind self doxing for something so innocent. Its called Integra Technologies, you can look it up. They are a controlled bolting service company that service flanges etc, bolt high pressure applications with hydraulic wrenches etc. But also manufacture and sell hydraulic nuts of various types. So when a flange in a high pressure pipe on the sea floor or in a refinery goes they can fix that. But they also do leak prevention, have fancy tech to make flanges safer, and monitoring systems etc to stop leaks before they happen
      For deepwater they had already designed tools for bolting that were nickle plated and intended to be handled by an ROV. So to seal the one pipe that no one could stop leaking, basically a big sheath that was bigger than the pipe went over it, and then was bolted with their ROV handled hydraulic nuts (I think it was the Sea Stallion unibody nuts but im not positive, it was like 15 years ago and i wasnt working there at the time).

    I worked in the oil and gas industry in Kansas and Oklahoma. I started on what is called a pulling unit, pulling and repairing relatively shallow oil and natural gas wells. Then, I moved on to a mobile single stand drilling rig. I worked on small shallow stuff in Kansas until I moved to the panhandle of Oklahoma, where I started working on a triple stand drilling rig for Bronco Drilling. In Kansas, the deepest I think we drilled was 6,000-8,000 ft. In Oklahoma, we drilled 30,000-40,000 feet deep and then 10's of thousands of feet horizontally. Drilling is an awesome science. After my daughter was born, I left the drilling rigs and began working as a pumper and driving a tanker semi hauling saltwater off of the oil wells. What most people dont know is that all the water below the fresh water table is saltwater.

    I used to work for the company that was responsible for maintaining those BOP's. Specifically, my company (Cameron) was responsible for taking BOPs out of service for usually about 6 months or so while major repairs were made. My Lead man was actually the man who proved that Cameron was not responsible for the disaster. Essentially, many BOPs go into and out of service for decades and decades. My facility worked on the deepwater horizon BOP, and my lead man was the final inspector on it too. Our work in repairing was essentially nullified because BP had made modifications to the design/installation that comprimised its integrity (I believe they said it was to maintain schedule and keep costs down). We kept all our inspection records, and can you believe it, expanded them afterwards. Those things in and of themselves are worth 250k a stack.
    Since then however, that entire plant has shut down.

For example, the breaker panels were placed on a wall approximately 1ft from some run-through piping, meaning you couldn't fully open the breaker panel door to interface with the breakers. If there were issues, they would have to use power tools to remove the door to work on the panel. They weren't allowed to leave the door off because this was a violation, so they would be required to re-attach the door when work was done.

Leeboy (A paving equipment manufacturer) got contracted by BP to make and bought tons of the machines that were used to clean the beaches that would rip up the sand and separate the oil from the sand and put back the cleaned sand. It was called the Land Shark and is a highly modified version of the machine known as a Chip Spreader used in paving. They painted it a different color and even cut out a shark fin they welded on top of the machine. They worked people in the plant 7 days a week to rush as many of the machines out as possible to get them on the ground as soon as possible.

    My dad was a master mariner for many years and after mastering dynamic positioning in the early-to-mid 2000s, spent the last decade of his career moving to smaller and smaller vessels as his pay exponentially increased. It's not just about sticking to one spot on the map - with the right data and programming you can constantly follow a surface temperature gradient and run massively productive shellfish hatcheries onboard ships. Factory farming oysters and abalone for fun and profit. It was a far cry from the 1980's when he had to use the cocked-hat method to triangulate bearings on a paper map from the reciprocal of a radiocompass heading pointed at designated TV and radio towers onshore, or the 1970's when he was trained on an astrolabe and sextant.

At the time, we were learning about Australia in World History, and we were given an assignment to do a report on a then-recent Australian news story. I did my report on a ship that tipped over and spilled oil into the Great Barrier Reef (though it left no lasting damage).
    I come into class the next day, and everyone's talking about the BP oil spill. I didn't hear about it before that moment, so I just thought they were talking about the spill from my report.
    It was weird leading that there was a second, more catastrophic oil spill that happened around the same time as mine.

    I was a drilling engineer and well site supervisor on Deepwater rigs and I expected to find lots of technical errors in the video (like when I watch something about the oilfield on the news) but your were spot on. Great video.

    Am I the only one who feels like this script was wrote by AI this time? He's said the same phrases like 15 times in nearly the same way and I'm not even halfway through.
    This doesn't feel like a normal video from him.

    The reason the BOP failed was that they were playing Russian Rollet with it. It was perfectly capable of cutting the pipe. Completely incapable of cutting the pipe CONNECTOR between sections of the pipe. The one live bullet. There was a 5/6 chance this wouldn't happen.

    This whole debacle was a clusterfuck from top to bottom. I live on the gulf coast and remember being so mad i drove to the hiring and working beaches for cleanup thinking i might see a man with a BP suit on or something to give a beating to. It didnt happen though. But just google Destin beach or Pensacola beach, the sand here is white as snow! Oil on the beaches, wetlands and harbors, and wildlife would kill our communities, so it crossed my mind to do the same to BP?
