I was there in Amsterdam back in 69 ... Ian was doing the high parts of "Child in Time" without a mike ... but everyone could hear it no problem ... :) Those were the days! :)

Excellent! Bought my very first vinyl LP in 1976 when I was 12 years old over here in New Zealand. It was Deep Purple 'Machine Head'. I paid for it with money I earned working for a local milk vendor delivering milk & cream in bottles. We worked in mornings and I had to get out of bed around 5am. I got paid $12/week and we worked in all weathers. I got fit and ended up winning the Intermediate School Form II Boys Cross Country running race. It changed my life forever as I had taken up smoking and soon stopped. I went on to a sporting career lasting 24 years. My able-bodied sporting career came to an abrupt halt in 1990 when I was 25 and I had my near-death motorcycle accident. It ultimately resulted in me losing my entire left leg as high up as possible i.e. hip and pelvis amputated - plus I suffered several serious internal injuries as well. Spent 3 weeks in the ICU [intensive care unit] of 2 hospitals and a total of 101 days in hospital. Doctors & surgeons who saved my life said my high fitness level greatly contributed to me surviving. Continued my sporting career and won 7 gold 1 silver 1 bronze medals plus broke 5 New Zealand records in swimming [S9 category] at the 1993 New Zealand Disabled Sporting Championships. I became the first lower limb amputee in the world to compete a Half Marathon on crutches on my one good right leg in 1991 - exactly one year on since competing in it abled bodied in 1990. Went on to complete my first full Marathon on crutches on one leg in 1992 - also a world first. In 1994 I set the World Best Time for a lower limb amputee using crutches on my one good right leg in the full Marathon. My time of 5 Hours 58 Minutes 13 seconds remained unbeaten for 19 years and the amputee who beat my time used ergogenic [doped! lol] crutches as they had spring loaded shock absorbers whereas I used ordinary hospital issue aluminum elbow crutches - and they didn't have built-in shock absorbers. I went on to complete 6 Half Marathons & 6 full Marathons on crutches on my one good right leg from 1991 to 1998, 8 years. However such extreme physical & mental athletic performance doesn't come without paying a price. In 2010 I had good right leg hip joint replaced. I am still active today at almost 59. But my greatest event in my life was my wedding day in 2005. My wife is my biggest hero. If you would like to read my sporting career story please click here:

Back to Deep Purple - a friend invited me to his home one day after primary school ended for the day in 1974 as he said he had the Deep Purple vinyl record LP; 'Deep Purple In Rock'. He informed me that the first song sounded a bit like going to church as it had an organ playing. I wondered that was v interesting considering the group played rock genre music....So my friend clicked the record player in to action and the arm and needle touched on to the top of the vinyl LP.....Of course track #1 on Deep Purple In Rock is 'Speed King' [Kneel & Pray variation]. I listened to Jon Lord's Hammond organ playing and thought 'ok this IS most interesting...and then BOOOOM CHUCK A LUCKA BOOM the group CRASHED in to the song and lyrics; 'Good Golly, said little Miss Molly When she was rockin' in the house of blue light Tutti Frutti was oh so rooty When she was rockin' to the east and west Lucille was oh so real When she didn't do her daddies will Come on baby, drive me crazy - do it, do it' And from that moment on in 1974 when I first heard Deep Purple on my friend's record player....I was addicted to Deep Purple. But wait there's more. As I am a Scorpio [birthday in early November] one of my traits is fierce LOYALTY. I continued buying the subsequent LPs of Deep Purple including 'Who Do We Think We Are', and 'Burn' and played them until the grooves in the vinyl wore out...I then considered buying 'Stormbringer' and back in those 1970s you could ask to listen to the LP over headphones before deciding whether to buy. Upon listening to 'Stormbringer' I noticed a difference to the general sound of the LP. And as Ritchie Blackmore himself declared it did sound a bit like 'shoe shining' music...a bit 'softer' I felt. I decided not to buy the LP. I then discovered through our local library that Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan had left and been replaced by David Coverdale ang bass axe player Roger Glover had left too and had been replaced by Glenn Hughes. Deep Purple had transformed in to Mark III. My preference has always been the Mark II lineup; Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, and Ian Paice. I liked the original lineup too. My love affair with Deep Purple had ended in divorce due to the loss of both Gillan & Glover in the Mark II lineup. My new love affair was with? Led Zeppelin. Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to see Deep Purple live during my life. However I did get to see Pink Floyd play live at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday August 6th 1988 when I was living & working there on my O.E. [overseas experience]. I also got to see The Screaming Blue Messiahs play at The Mean Fiddler in Harlesden on Thursday September 1 '88. Wow that was a v hot & sweaty gig in the evening. It was superb. It was so loud I was deaf for 2 days afterwards. If you'd like to see my photos taken at the Pink Floyd gig please click here:

"Kneel and Pray," which would become "Speed King! It would take a bit longer for Ian's lyric writing skills to match his vocal prowess. ;)

    • @paulspalace

Very much on the line of Highway Star, they jammed it on the road with lyrics made up on the fly, they played HIghway Star on the Fireball tour, i dare say this was the same, Gillan says that they wrote Speed King (Kneel and prey) to use as an encore in place of Lucille.

    Amazing!!!!!?!
Obviously "in Rock" it's in initial stage and the band hasn't settled on arrangements yet.... It's all rough ideas.... It's like they had their first practice the day before this show.... Blackmore does not even know what to play on Speed King..... and it's obvious it's not even speed king yet 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    Amazing
