Yup - I was listening along, enjoying the performance, but not in love with the arrangement as it didn't seem to break any new ground, and then the clarinet solo took off. Great improv, great playing. This band would have been hot during the 70s when Maynard was playing somewhere every night. I'm glad the UK has kept the modern big band tradition alive - we've kind of let it go here, in favor of... I don't know... mostly crap pop techno whatever - I guess I'm too old to appreciate the newer music.
Holy crap. That was excellent. I’ve heard about a million recordings of this piece and this is the first truly original reimagining of it that retains the original flavor while adding modern panache. Brilliant work, everyone.
I'm addicted to this masterpiece. This video only almost made me spend 70$ on your Patreon page. Then I remembered that I'm a student with no money...sorry :(
Louis Dowdeswell has put together a top big band and Callum Au is an incredible arranger. It takes a lot of guts to take on some of the most iconic music and find new ways to express it and be successful.
I clapped at the end of Peter Long's solo, it was that edifying. I also love this new take on this legendary standard, taking it the song to new heights and not acting as a carbon copy of the original as great as that is.
I just want you to know Louis that if you made an album with all the songs that you and the band have played, I would buy that so fast it would make a band director’s head spin
I looked at the title and thought oh boy, another version that will suck, boy was I 100% wrong, this is killer by all involved. Thanks for posting, loved the drummer , the trumpet solo was outstanding.
Certainly different and I don't know if I absolutely love it or don't like it. But everyone involved did an absolutely outstanding job regardless. Wonderful wonderful work
Textbook on how to play relaxed in upper register. Great job.
W.M. Smith will do you wonders
Oh my gosh, *THE* Scott Dean! You are a legend to DCI and all trumpeters out there!
@@trevorcannon433 I figured there'd be some drum corps brass players hanging out listening to this band. Almost had to be.
One of the most undersubbed channels ever.
