Hello! Coming from a seasoned Pilot VP/Capless user, you can replace the nib units very easily. Also, the version of the Capless you got is an alloy metal nib, it's not real gold, so if you get a replacement nib unit it will be cheaper than the real gold nib units too. Just something to think about!
@@ghostyplansyes, you can get replacement units with a gold nib, too. They cost about as much as the whole Capless pen with alloy nib, maybe a little more, but about half as much as a whole pen with gold nib. Or did you mean a warranty replacement?
@@denisewenke8323 As far as I know Lindsey did not get a replacement nib. She bought a whole new Pilot Vanishing Point / Capless pen to replace her old pen. I'm quite sure about that because at the time I thought to myself, she could have just replaced the nib unit. Would have been cheaper, but 🤷♀
It's ok Michelle, this has happened to most of us. There's that moment of shock and regret, and then you move on. Your Capless pen is meant to be used, and it the nib suffers a fall and bends or breaks, you can easily buy a new nib unit for not too much dough. Chances are, this will never happen again to you, since it has already occurred. I think you should take your Capless everywhere and use it and love it!
Aliexpress sells replacement nibs for about $6. I have some in my cart to change out the very fine on the Majohn version to a more preferred fine. And custom grinds are available on Etsy, I think?
I have an identical story of how my Majohn capless rolled off the dining table and landed on a rug nib down, breaking the tip off. It happens to all of us. That being said, the nibs are relatively easy and low cost to replace. Get the replacement. You’ll have better luck with the next one. 😊
The same thing happened to me with my Lamy 2000. It didn’t break but the nib & feed needed to be realigned and I had it tuned up. Once the shock wears off you will go back to using all your pens. I love pilot capless pens. I just bought a new VP and planning to use it everyday!
Btw I ordered two pilot Kakuno pens from Amazon after seeing your video. I used one and it is so nice!! These cartridges are so easy! Thanks for sharing
Omg nooooooooooo! Thank goodness this didn't happen with the pilot capless one. I'm a total newbie to fountain pens. Only have my twsbis so far, but I'm so paranoid about this happening because I'm a naturally clumsy person. I've been really careful so far about putting the caps back on even while I'm using it. I ordered a few kakunos to use outside of the house. I work mostly from home (occasionally have to go out but not often) so I don't mind keeping my nice pens indoors at my desk. I'm glad they said you can send it back for a replacement. I know $20 isnt much but like you said, these things add up.
I had a similar experience with a very expensive set of Faber Castel Pitt Matt drawing pencils. I had just sharpened them to create long lead exposure for sketching. Then one rolled off my desk and I lost over an inch of lead! That was an aha moment for me. Now all of my drawing tools go in a tray when in use. And I saved money by shopping in the home goods section of Target. I got a beautiful wicker bathroom tray that I line with a paper towel. Nothing rolls off my desk anymore. And in your case you could take the tray to your dining room table to protect your precious pens! All this being said, my cat occasionally steals my smaller pocket pens out of the tray to get my attention...lol. So beware of mischievous kitties.... By the way, my local Target has a good selection of trays from plastic to wood to porcelain to wicker, all reasonably priced...Its worth it to protect your stuff...
I had my vanishing point with a gold nib for 2 weeks and dropped it on my desk and bent the nib pretty bad. I was able to bend it back and fix it but I was really upset for a couple of days before I decided to try to fix it.
Ugh. My heart sunk for you. So sorry that happened. I only have cheaper ones like your other ones. I don’t own a nice one yet. I would be so sad too. I’m glad you can replace it but it def makes you nervous to use any of it. Totally agree. I’ve been having fun with ink samples too. It’s the cheaper way to enjoy them 🤣. Thanks for updating!
Hi there. New sub here. I bought the Jinhao 10 after watching your video. It came in one day from Amazon! I love it. It would be worth returning and in exchange for a new one, IMO. Thank you for your original video and the warning to be very careful with it!
Honestly love you're talking about this though! It really sucks but it's part of the learning process. Sounds like the pen just had a very unfortunate fall. I once dropped my phone from only 10cm off of the floor and it shattered the screen just because it hit a very unfortunate angle, despite having it dropped loads from greater heights before. I'd say get that replacement if they're offering it again. Maybe it really was just a specific angle? Get that replacement, use it how you want to (bring it out and about!) and just see how it holds up the second time around. If it happens again then it was simply just not meant to be
I did this, too, but with a vanishing point. A replacement nib costs about half the cost of the pen. I hate using it now. I ended up with Majohn A1 that I love.
Fountain pen newbie here! I have researched a lot after getting my father's VERY OLD fountain pens and I would suggest you to find a new nib, the whole nib, and switch them. I'm sure there are tutorials to help or someone where you live who are fountain pen doctors 😅 The investment versus the bad sure is a bummer, but don't give up the pen yet. (I wrote the comment during the video, so if you've already talked about exchanging the nib, sorry lol)
Although it does totally suck to lose a pen you loved, don't be too hard on yourself! Accidents happen and I do think it's great that it actually happened with the more affordable one instead of the Capless. Fountain pens are much more delicate than other pens, but there are ways of keeping them a bit safer - I do only use my pens at an actual desk to avoid them rolling away. And I make sure to put them down intentionally where the clip keeps them from falling. I have both steel and gold nib pens and I tend to keep my gold and favorites at home. There are other knock around pens that can go with me out and about - if something happens to one of them, I'll be bummed, but not devastated. My personal rule is if I can't replace it easily (either due to sentimental reasons or because of its price), it's a pen that stays home. I hope this experience doesn't put you off fountain pens - it's been wonderful to see your discovery and love of them grow recently as someone who has been using them for a while.
I do not own a Jinhao 10 but I do have a similar price point Majohn A1. I can say it's okay to be upset but please don't let this stop you exploring with other capless FPs. I've used and abused my Majohn A1 and dropped a few times but it's still working well. I can't invest on a gold VP but my Majohn scratched the capless itch already so I am planning getting another one without the clip. Like everyone said, you can check for replacement nibs, they're very cheap, if you're not ready for exploring more. Hope you feel better soon!
Majohn or mahannan or moonman and also jinhao 10, they sell the raplacement really cheap, so much more cheap than Pilot kaküno's, dont worry for that enjoy ur pen, tus for that, ITS a jinhao 10.
This is such a bummer!! I agree it’s to invest in things and use them. I too am so nervous to mess it up, lose it, break it etc. I hope you get a replacement or st least replace the nib
Oh no😮! After seeing you with yours I ordered one. I m going to have to b extra careful-I m a real Kluttz. I hope u do send it back-maybe it was a faulty nib & the next one will be better. I have had 4 Jinhaos never broke a nib-they are usually very tough.
I believe you can buy a replacement nib for the majohn a2 which might actually fit the jinhao 10's feed, but I don't know. Also they may not be that much less expensive than the pen itself.
It’s always the worst when something like this happens. It’ll be okay! Just because it happened once doesn’t mean it’ll happen again. Id return and replace! It’ll be okay. These items are here for us to use and love. Carry the capless! Don’t be afraid.
Don’t give up on your vision for the pen. Get your replacement and live your life! If you get too precious with it, you’ll never use it. Don’t be afraid, part of the fun is the journey.
I really think it had a flaw or damaged already. Get the replacement and try again. I've dropped cheap fountain pens on the hard floor and they were fine.❤
Honestly, I don't think gold nibs > steel nibs necessarily. I have a vintage E59s with a gold nib and it's nice, but there are definitely some modern steel nibs I like more than it. And like you said, gold nibs are more finicky and not as strong as steel nibs. It's true. They are bouncier and a lot of people really love bouncy-feeling nibs, but they aren't always smoother or more interesting as writers than I really well-tuned steel nib.
Im so sorry it broke!!!😩😩. Try the replacement to see if it takes you through the long haul you never know. Are twisbi fountain pens only piston filled? I want to get one after watching you videos but only use cartridges so far.
What's up Michelle! I reviewed this Jinhao 10 and as I told you the one thing I don't like is the bulkiness of the clip in my hand. However, this particular pen is not made well. The one I had broke after being dropped by Amazon in bubble wrap on my door. When I tested it, I could see that it was not made very well as there was no seam where the pen snapped, leaving me with the "huh" 🤔🤨. You won't have that same issue with the Pilot. 💜
But it shouldn't break in the first place, if it takes only 2 days and you keep replacing it....eventually it will be more expensive that the real deal
Please don’t be discouraged, it’s a Jinhao, not a Pilot or better model. And a gold nib is no different than jewelry. Rings get scratched but you still wear them. This isn’t your fault, it’s an accident. Also, your thinking about using and enjoying the item whatever it is, is good; otherwise, you get to your senior years and won’t have enjoyed a lot of the better things in life. Keep on writing!
I’ve never heard of a nib breaking when falling on a carpet! I guess this is one reason I don’t buy Chinese pens. I’m the opposite about usage-if I paid a lot of money, I’m damn well going to use it!
So. I also had commented on your original post about the Johnson that mine came with a mystery spring which I now realize fell out of the nib end of the barrel. So my nib now retracts but I think it’s kinda wonky and possibly the cause of your current woes but I absolutely love the way the ink flows through the pen. So, I would keep it if I were you and keep hounding Amazon if it breaks again!
Looks like you broke your dream along with that nib. Resilience is the game now. I had a similar thing happen to me with vanishing point within a week of receiving it. the Majohn a2 is a way cheaper than a pilot gold nib and its fine but all nibs that small will prolly break cause gravity and small things do not go well together :(
I don’t know this pen but I did have an idea. Lots of comments already that you can replace the nib. Contact Brian at Goulet pens. Tell him what happened and see what he suggests. Just an idea
It's a horrible feeling when this kind of thing happens. I have a similar inexpensive capless fountain pen. I recently purchased replacement nib units for it, not due to breakage but because I wanted to use a different colour of ink.
Since it is still under 30 days, why not get the Jinhao replaced? The Pilot Capless was an incredible fluke and should be loved and used. Please don’t shy away from the fountain pens, that’s not you (as I discovered your determination through finding the perfect Moleskin).
Return the Jinhao. If you liked it, exchange it. I use my gold nib pens only at home. I lost a pen traveling once but since it was a $25 Diplomat Magnum I replaced it easily. I would have felt terrible if it was one of my gold nib pen that I would have not replaced so easily.
Omg I feel ya, I dropped my brand new esterbrook estie the very first time I filled it and it landed directly on the tip and destroyed it. Never even wrote with it 😭 thankfully you can get replacement nibs!
DONT STOP USING UR PENS! ur jinhao died so ur capless can live! Free the pilot! 😂 now that this has happened, u'll be hyper aware and more careful abt leaving the pen with the nib out. Thankfully replacement nib units for jinhaos are cheap...just get a replacement and take that bad boy out again. Pens are meant to be used. I drag my custom 823 on vacations even tho they are expensive. Maybe just get a nice pen case for ur more valuable pens.😅
@@midnightprincessful It happened to me that I broke a nib like this, by means of the fountain pen dropping head first on the floor. I think it was one of my old parker pens that also had it's o ring missing, which meant that it kept the barrel kept unscrewing itself too easily from the grip section. I'm afraid I was just lazy and chucked the whole pen, instead of replacing the nib unit of the parker. I don't know if I could have replaced the nib unit or not. The thing is that I had other pens to keep me busy and happy and it's been a few years now, and this kind of mishap hasn't happened to me again with any other pen. But it has happened with a small 30ml bottle of diamine ink! It spilled on my wooden floor and made a stain and I lost 1/4 of the contents of ink. However again, so far this hasn't happened again. I now do all my reinking in the kitchen, on my plastic kitchen work surface and if any ink drops it does so on the tiled kitchen floor. ;) So far no further accidents as I'm more careful now.
This is what happens to cheap Chinese cr@p though… no way metal should have snapped after dropping on carpet. Chinese brands are famous for producing things that might be good to start with and then swapping to dodgy manufacturers and subbing in cheaper materials etc. Stick to reputable brands - you have a better chance.

Just a little smoothing and I bet it would write quite nice. A gold nib would probably survive better and be easier to repair than steel.

I carry my kaweco sport brass fountain pen cuz I know the nibs relatively easy to replace. 😊
The exact same thing happened to my Jinhao 10 but my nib just broke while I was writing and not using pressure or anything. It's a really fragile nib.

Hello.....just breath a little bit and chill!!! What you should do is buy a new nib...it costs 3 dollars! And that's it..... No problem whatsoever .
Okay but you don’t have to tell her to “chill”. She is being very chill and just giving an update. Not being dramatic.
Whaaat!! That is sad and disappointing :(
don't be scurred. hah.
Ok what a disappoint. I’m sorry.
Well, that stinks! But good news you can return 🤍.
