Hey Corporal, thank you for your service, and for sharing the knowledge. Quick question, I live in the desert, and at night the ground is covered with black widows, sun spiders, rattlesnakes, scorpions, etc. I'm trying to keep it light and use a military bivy, but the creatures creeping around the desert floor at night say use a one man tent. Any real world advice would be greatly appreciated.🇺🇸🙏🏽🤘🏽
Thanks for showing this set up. Over the years, you've definitely sold me on the idea of carrying ponchos over tarps, which I have many of... Tarps, that is. Damn. Lol If you were looking at "off-brands" of ponchos, perhaps bc you were on a limited budget or were out somewhere that you couldn't have something shipped to you bc you are traveling, what are the specs and features you feel are the most important when comparing ponchos? I've seen several different styles and brands to compare lately and wanted your input before pulling the trigger on any of them. Thanks for always putting up inspiring new and fresh content!!! Fresh AF
I like the background sounds - the birds, crickets, wind, etc. It adds to the authenticity of the video. If it sounded like you were in a recording studio it would honestly hurt your videos.
I like the background sounds. You are in the woods not a studio or basement. Ppl really need to stop being butt hurt over every little thing. Thank you for all your hard work.
Did this in boy scouts back in 1980. Two things with the hood. 1) chinc it tight for full water proof style tarp. This keeps the wind from making it flop. 2) if it's hot you can prop the hoods open for ventilation using a forked branch.
Love these primitive type vids where you make do with minimal gear. I also like when you spend the night and see how it goes. What kind of sleep do you get? Do you wake up and say, "That sucked"? -ha. Quality sleep is all important. Thanks Corporal.
I was in the Missouri Army National Guard, and trained split op. The day after I got home from basic training, I reported for a muta 5 weekend drill, bivouac on a river bank in the woods. I had not been issued my half of a pup tent. My poncho snapped perfectly to the other half of a pup tent. Field expedience is awesome.
For the record and right off the bat, the mic issues don't bother me as a viewer. One because I see these videos as a practical learning experience. Two because I actually enjoy the sounds of the birds and such in the woodlands. As someone who lives and spends time in the woods, this is just part of the experience. Makes me happy every time I hear a red shouldered hawk in your videos because that's one I commonly hear as well. Thanks brother. God bless
Fantabulous video, Corporal! The mic was great, topic was so good! I love watching Corporal’s Corner every day of the week…and twice on Sundays! Love our amazing Corporal!!! 🏕🪵🤗👏🔥
"Think about things, don't judge things." Love it. You're audio sounds good! Keep that ambient sound. To make it easier, you can just clip that mic to your t-shirt neck or use the rode magnetic clip. Audio snobs will say it's not the "ideal" location, but it works. Set it and forget it. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the video, you've shown that it can be done. Here in the west of Scotland rain is the norm so it's more practical to carry a basha/tarp to provide the shelter and use the poncho as a groundsheet when inside and as a waterproof layer when outside. Don't worry about background noise, birds sing in the woods, it's one of the reasons that people venture into the woods.
Don't know why some don't like military gear, but I find it to be quite good to use. It seems to hold up much better, and is more versatile. It can usually take more punishment than what's on the civilian market. I've had a military issue field jacket with liner that I wore for 15 or 20 years. By then the only thing wrong with it was that the edges of the hems we're fraying out. Other jackets that I had did last nearly as long. Maybe those nay sayers have something against the military, who knows. Wonder if they've ever tried that stuff out.
I like how you're getting back to what you do best. Keep it up and I'll keep coming back. My son and I watch your videos every weekend and he loves them.
While I am not "knot challenged" I always appreciate how you revisit knots and show alternatives. The mike sounds great, love the sound of rain on my shelters!
Wow, it’s been a while. I used to watch these videos all the time, but for some reason RUclips stop putting them in my feed. Glad I stumbled across corporals corner again
In regards to the microphone issue: I have seen several people clip it to their hat in a few ways. This prevents it from sloshing around by being clipped to your shirt or a paracord necklace. It would also eliminate needing to move it around constantly. You could clip it somewhere along the brim of your hat, on the adjuster strap, or on the side somewhere between the adjuster strap and your ear. I have seen this method used by several people and it works well for them. Might be something to try.
We like the bird noise and the background of being in the woods. If you listen to it with headphones on, it's like being there. Great video as always. I haven't seen this attempted before. They always do two man A-frames. (As a person who lives in a rain forest, staying dry is on the top of my list.) You proved that you can stay dry. Well done.
Back in 77 had to train with a new support unit in prep for reforger 77. Trained every week until aug and then shipped everything to germany. I was in a support BN and we would always set up little hootches in the field using ponchos and shelter halves, kept the rain off yya real good. We used our commo wire to keep everything tied together, came in real handy. In Germany while in the field, we would sit inside, have a gas lantern, couple of big bottles of that dark german beer, and sit out there getting gassed. Commander had no idea what we were up to.Always a German village close by with plenty of beer. heheahahah
I am all up for the poncho also. It is also because I served and am used to them. It also due to experience. My outdoor adventure club when I was in college did a multi day hike in the presidential range in New Hampshire. On the second day we realized that we had problems. We were not anywhere near our next stop and it was getting late. We dropped below the tree line (got ourselves off the top of the mountain.) then we consolidated all the ponchos. We didn’t make individual tents because we didn’t have enough. We strung them up between the bushes and small trees and people took their sleeping bags, crowded up together under them and stayed for the night. We just thought it was cool. We didn’t realize how much danger we were in. We did when we read the news that someone had actually died that night from hypothermia in the same area we had hunkered down. So yes. I get the poncho every time.
Another great video I hope our country stays together but if it doesn't I hope you're close by and we can help each other out two heads are better then one. Thank you for all the knowledge. And thank you for your service Happy holidays to you and yours.
I want to hear the birds. Nature is a good thing I live in it every day. Please keep doing what you're doing thanks for the content. Semper fidelis sir blessings to you and yours
Took your advice and threw a get home bag together and purchased an additional poncho. Also went over the items with my kids and how they can keep you alive! Keep up the great content
The background noise/wildlife sounds have always been welcome. Its great to hear the peepers in your videos for the first time….let’s us know in upstate NY that Spring is coming.
Good afternoon Yes that type of configuration has been done numerous times although None have been done with 2 Pancho's put together And you did a great job showing us all how it was done 👍
Another great video Corp using the K.I.S.S. Principle. Maximum comfort and protection from the elements with minimal gear and effort. Now I gotta get me another poncho. But what a great teaching exercise you’ve given me to share my grandchildren. You keep making the videos Shawn. I’ll keep watching them. Thanks again. Stay frosty. 👍
The new mic works fine by me. Loud and clear. 2 ponchos are better than 1 or 2 tarps. Kind of hard to wear a tarp if you're walking and covering ground in a light to moderate rain. Still the best bow driller on RUclips.
I like the sounds of nature in the videos. I think carrying two ponchos is a great idea to keep weight down. It also gives you more options for shelter. I carry two ponchos sometimes for an extra or incase one of my kids need one while we are out on an adventure. I love the videos and how you think outside the box. I also like the fact you take time to talk and explain things. Even if someone is advanced they can still learn new things, if they have an open mind. Keep up the outstanding work!
Poncho's love em!!! I have 4 of them and have made a huge poncho tent and a cover for my Pathfinder hammock. I used a medium size three as a center pole and snapped all four poncho's together except for the four center corners. Ran bankline through the corner eyes tied bankline around the tree at at a suitable height then staked the four corners. There was a lot of room for me and my 80lb Dutch Brindle Shepherd Saber. We go out in the national forest here in North Arkansas and camp out for a few days. Watching your channel along with some others has helped me deal with my PTS issues. Last year six of my ARMY buddies took their lives, this year I've had 3 friends take their lives and Hunter took his life last Tuesday. I don't know why my buddies are doing this but getting out and trying to duplicate some of your overnighters has helped me out. Thank you brother for what you do and never think your videos don't matter. Looking forward to watch the next one. NSDQ!!!!!
For those who Served in the 1990's and beyond, the poncho and the poncho liner (woobie) were two of the best pieces of equipment that the US Army and the Marine Corps gave to their troops!!!
When I was in the army back in 1989 in basic training we learned that your poncho was a makeshift shelter half so you could just use the tent pole and make another from a stick the same length so you have an A frame tent
These videos are top notch! You build it, explain the process, teach helpful tricks and applications and then use it. It’s why I’ve been a subscriber and view your work for many years. Thanks for the resilience and perseverance with the platform issues. From a fellow Gen X’r who appreciates your work and effort. 👊
Used two ponchos a bunch for two man tent in the Rangers, back in "the old days" '68-'74. Later, as a civilian Scoutmaster, our other Scoutmaster and I did the same. Soon, all our scouts were doing the same thing. Our troop was noted for never showing up with vehicles and trailers filled with support gear. We humped in all our gear. Really pissed off the other Scoutmasters! Personally, I got a kick outta that.😁
The back ground noises are peaceful to me.I even enjoy the sawing sound.Beats all the hustle and bustle we hear in everyday life.Keep doing your thing corporal it is much appreciated.
Ponchos are invaluable! Thrown over you are you gonna remain completely dry, no. What they do is add a barrier and a thermal layer. I like the concept. Great job Cpl. Semper Fi SSgt B.
Another outstanding educational vid buddy, knowledge thats a life saver for those who actually listen, from one brother to another be safe out there mate👍🏴
Love the videos. Look forward to getting the new one every week. As a 75 year old ex-military man, I am still learning something new every video. Thanks for all you do and keep up the outstanding work.
Loving the military poncho shelter mate...makes perfect sense if the daylight isn't far away and two guys are both carrying. Keeps off the wind, rain and fog that'll soak you and Rob you of body heat, minus the weight load. And the fire lighting...the skill is from muscle memory...use it or lose it. Another gem of a video
Always enjoy your videos. Even though at 68 years old I’m not going to be physically able to do much sleeping in the woods. However since I found your channel 3 or so years ago I have been following you and Dave Canterbury along with others to learn more about the skills. I have 3 grandsons that enjoy the outdoors that are between 9 and 12 that love the outdoors and a granddaughter that’s 6 and will not be left out. I have demonstrated some of the skills, especially fire starting and some basic shelter skills. I have also demonstrated some of these with a small group of homeschoolers. My career was in emergency services and emergency management, so preparedness is the key element for me. Thanks for your educational endeavors.
Bob Evans pre-made anything is hard to beat. My wife was tempted to quit making homemade mashed potatoes since theirs is so darned PERFECT every time. When I was a lowly SPC E-4 in the Army NG (Indiana) I volunteered to help with medical support on an assault range in wonderful Camp Atterbury, just outside Edinburgh, IN. We stayed on the range most of the time, sleeping in a staging area near the entrance. The SGT in charge suggested we not sleep in tents, but to use our shelter halves as lean-tos and cover the middle with an extra poncho he had with him. We set up our personal shelter halves with the ends overlapping at the corners, and he put the poncho up using a stick on the hood. I don't remember how we attached the poncho to the shelters, but it worked famously. It didn't rain the whole time we were there, but we didn't complain. Had it done so, we would've been secure and dry. This set up brings back so good memories.
I LOVE the background sounds, the screaming of the Blue Jays, the crickets, etc. I love camping and those sounds are Zen to me. Nature and peacefullness. It reminds me of camping in Michigan, which I did for 30 years before moving to the desert SW where we have different sounds like coyotes. Please don't edit them out.
Thanks for doing this, Corporal. I always wondered if a shelter made with 2 ponchos would leak. I know that you can make emergency shelters with one, but those are not designed for comfort. I appreciate you scratching that itch. I hope you have a Happy Halloween!
Got to love a Tarp tent. Personally I use 3 Taught line hitches to tension it. I use a Poncho for my rain cover and back up. But I always carry a super light DD 10x10' Tarp that packs smaller than a poncho. Way more versatile being a big square. I carry one of those pull apart into 3 trekking pole in my pack. Light and don't need to find a stick if out in the open or in managed woodland.

You can spray bug repellent around the tent will cut down on the insects.
I'd love it if you could put together desert tips for us viewers.
I like the background sounds - the birds, crickets, wind, etc. It adds to the authenticity of the video. If it sounded like you were in a recording studio it would honestly hurt your videos.
Same
Yea sure beats trucks & trains
Agreed.
^ I agree too
Highly agree sounds are critical to making corporal corners video genuine. 👍
Frogs, birds, bugs oh my!!! I dig all that while your teaching and mentoring all of us. Keep on keeping on brother.
I hear you just fine
over the wildlife. The sound of the birds in the background is music to our ears. Thanks for all your hard work corporal .
I like the birds! Lol
Microphone sounds good, and I like the birds and background noise--it shows you're really outside.
"So you know exactly what you don't want to do": best advice ever! Should be put on a T-shirt. Thanks again Corporal. 👍
I like the background sounds. You are in the woods not a studio or basement. Ppl really need to stop being butt hurt over every little thing. Thank you for all your hard work.
I like the new mic. The nature sounds are part of it. Your in the woods. But people suck so someone will complain.
Solo Overnighters are... in my opinion... the best thing that you do. Bravo Zulu!
The background noises make great videos.

Wouldn't worry about background noise. You are in the outdoors. Makes it nice! As long as your voice is loud and clear who cares.
"Gear adrift is a gift" Damn right. The frontier strikers look awesome. Guess I have to get me one. Learned a lot - many thanks.
Background noise is great, makes me want to drive north and spend the day in the woods..thank you for sharing your adventures with us
I was in the Missouri Army National Guard, and trained split op. The day after I got home from basic training, I reported for a muta 5 weekend drill, bivouac on a river bank in the woods. I like the ambient background noise it’s real.
Never will I miss a show especially the Sunday overnighter albeit I watch them all to help promote the channel you worked hard for.
Don't know how many videos I have watched? But I have yet to be disappointed 👍

100% background noise needs to be in the vid. Much prefered over music. It's like we are there with you. Keep up the great work.
I like hearing the wildlife in the background and appreciate your video.
I like the sound of nature.
I like how you're getting back to what you do best. Keep it up and I'll keep coming back. My son and I watch your videos every weekend and he loves them.
Outstanding AF!!! The ambient sounds never bothered me I enjoy listening to the birds. It’s another reason I like getting out to the woods.
While I am not "knot challenged" I always appreciate how you revisit knots and show alternatives. The mike sounds great, love the sound of rain on my shelters!
I like the natural sounds personally
Wow, it’s been a while. I used to watch these videos all the time, but for some reason RUclips stop putting them in my feed. Glad I stumbled across corporals corner again
yet if i say this i am just complaining
I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY IN YOUR LIFE AND NOT LISTENING TO HOW OTHERS WANT YOU TO LIVE
In regards to the microphone issue: I have seen several people clip it to their hat in a few ways. This prevents it from sloshing around by being clipped to your shirt or a paracord necklace. It would also eliminate needing to move it around constantly.

I agree. The background sounds make it as though we are in the field with you....😂In spite of us being comfortably sheltered watching the video.🤗💚
Rain keeps it real AF. Corporal earns all his views.

Shawn, don't worry about the birds background noise. I personally find it very authentic and quite enjoyable/relaxing aspect to your awesome videos!
Two ponchos and a tracking pole ❤❤❤
The back noise just is awesome and if people don’t military stuff there loss I appreciate everything you show us
Took your advice and threw a get home bag together and purchased an additional poncho. Also went over the items with my kids and how they can keep you alive! Keep up the great content
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was looking for a video to tell me how to use 2 military ponchos to make a tent.. Thank you much.
The background noise/wildlife sounds have always been welcome. Its great to hear the peepers in your videos for the first time….let’s us know in upstate NY that Spring is coming.
New microphone was terrific…loud and clear
Good afternoon
Yes that type of configuration has been done numerous times although
None have been done with 2 Pancho's put together
And you did a great job showing us all how it was done 👍
I don't give a shit what anyone says I love your Solo overnighters in the woods brother!
Another great video Corp using the K.I.S.S. Principle. Maximum comfort and protection from the elements with minimal gear and effort. Now I gotta get me another poncho. SuzyAnn .
This is simple and informative, thank you 😊🙏🏼
When I was in the army back in 1989 in basic training we learned that your poncho was a makeshift shelter half so you could just use the tent pole and make another from a stick the same length so you have an A frame tent
The A frame is maybe the simplest go-to pitch, but a tarp (or poncho) is super versatile as well.
Corporals' two poncho tarp tent - and keeelbaassa for the win!
Yes sir, tried, and now true. Well done corporal, thanks.
These videos are top notch! You build it, explain the process, teach helpful tricks and applications and then use it. It’s why I’ve been a subscriber and view your work for many years. Thanks for the resilience and perseverance with the platform issues. From a fellow Gen X’r who appreciates your work and effort. 👊
I remember when you had less than 20k subscribers and I watched, now you have over one million!! OMG how awesome. 😊
Background sounds is better, it add to the authencity of the videos... keep it up corporal!!
Love that Rode mic ... sounds great, Corporal!
That money is well spent. I notice the diff.in 3 seconds I had to look twice . Very very sweet . I love the Mic. WELL DONE BUD
I like the background sounds very relaxing and we can still hear you over everything else so it’s all good
Seems to me like your mic is just fine. Absolutely no trouble hearing what you had to say. Great video as usual!
The background noise of birds and such is really ok, it just adds to the atmosphere of the videos. You are out in nature. its part of the deal.
Love back ground noises Corp and outstanding!! God Bless America 🇺🇸
That Mic works better than any other one you've used
The Mike worked pretty good on the forging video, that and the compass vid were good, solid stuff. Thanks, Shawn.
I love my poncho. Most versatile and reliable piece of equipment in my gear. I don't go to the woods without it. STAY SAFE AND GOD BLESS!
2 ponchos, neat idea
Another outstanding educational vid buddy, knowledge thats a life saver for those who actually listen, from one brother to another be safe out there mate👍🏴
Love the videos. Look forward to getting the new one every week. As a 75 year old ex-military man, I am still learning something new every video. Thanks for all you do and keep up the outstanding work.
Loving the military poncho shelter mate...makes perfect sense if the daylight isn't far away and two guys are both carrying. I like the new mic 🎤 your voice seems clear even with the background sounds, which I don't mind.

100% on the background noise. Keep it in, love it!
The birds add to the effect! Love the videos and learned so much!
Your audio sounds perfect to me . You make amazing videos on so many topics and they are very informative. Very explanatory good job 👏
Happy Veterans Day thank you for your service
I like hearing the nature around you, always great vids. Thx 4 all your hard work, I look forward to the next video!
Always enjoy your videos, full of down to earth options, thanks...
Simple, but VERY practical in my opinion. Could easily just be used on a hiking trip that unexpectedly turns into an overnighter in bad weather.
Bloody genius and of course OUTSTANDING
Another winner! Always livens up Sunday evenings. Agree with others, the background sounds add to the atmosphere
Two ponchos are better than one and I like the background wildlife.
