I'm old... 65 to be honest... From a child though my favorite thing has been lying in a shelter of varying "quality" while a storm whips around me while staying warm and dry. There are few shelters I haven't tried including, nowadays, a 35' travel trailer but under a poncho in the Forces and worse in the past but when the rain falls and the wind whips I almost can't sleep - because it feels so good to be out in the elements and comfortable. Nice work Beare...

Ex-military, I was the commo guy for an airborne front line company. I made incredible 'hooches" that were unusual shapes and well concealed, camouflaged for obvious reasons. I always had more than enough to work with, but the most fun I had was when after leaving the service I would go camping on an island that was surrounded by salt water, had wall to wall pine trees with six foot high briars under it wherever it could find sunlight. In the middle of one of these patches I found a good 60' diameter patch covered in soft fallen needles about 4-6" thick. And here is where my trip took a left turn.
Apparently the 2 man a frame tent I had used the previous season was not properly stored (again, obviously my fault) and upon taking it from my backpack (if it didn't fit in the Alice mountain RTO large rucksack, it did not reach the camp site) and I flapped it in the breeze to open it up... I usually peg the floor first, a polyurethane Fiberglas reinforced sheet, and then go in and throw the supports in, followed by outside and pull the guy lines. As I threw the tent open a seriously surprising event happened. The entire tent minus the floor exploded into BB sized patches of cloth in a green color floated on the wind...
My tent was completely disintegrated into confetti.
As usual, I pack ground sheets, camo sheets, netting, you name it, usually for storage areas. However, I now had to make myself a shelter and having that extra made me happy and I built an incredible hooch using the extra tarps and I had a wonderful time with my girlfriend in a rather large shelter... a 20x30 tarp in camo is a really good start.

I dislocated my left ankle in 1968 in a climbing accident. I had two operations on it, resulting in a pin being inserted to hold it together. I'm 75 now and can still get out for walks on the wild Yorkshire moors. I'm so pleased that your ankle wasn't more badly damaged and is recovering. As you say, you will need to be careful with it from now on. HUG.

You did well with your "tarp" tent. Condensation is often a problem in a single wall, but by keeping the tarp side off off the ground and away from the tent you can handle it well. One more simple trick to keep the "ridge" from sagging so much, string a line under the ridge. I know it might appear to be redundant, but fabric has a grain, and when you go diagonal to the grain, it will stretch or sag, and the grain on your tarp is parallel to the sides, so by adding a line that is quite taut, it will keep it from sagging. (I was a professional tent designer for 30+ years). Good video.

This is such a wonderful improvement on the typical DIY camping videos. I love how you try new stuff, and figure out how to make it work. Also, your absolutely contagious and obvious joy in your work is inspirational ( and reminds us all to get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!) It's all too easy to say "well, the weather is looking sketchy..." and stay home. And grow old, lose your hard-earned conditioning, sit on the sofa, get stressed out..... Your Zen- like approach to life's little speed bumps is to be commended.
    Don't sweat the small stuff.

By way of encouragement regarding your injury...
I blew an ACL playing volleyball in 1996. My ACL was completely destroyed, enough that my orthopedist actually didn't have to do any cleanup when he did the reconstruction surgery using my patellar ligament in 2020. Major injury.
Though I don't play volleyball any more, in 2011 I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, in 2012 Mount Rainier, and 2015 Mount Adams. Just this past October I climbed up (and then descended a few days later) Asgard Pass with a fully loaded backpack.
The upshot is that it will only hold you back if you stop trekking.
All the best for your recovery... and I hope you keep making these lovely videos :)

Hello. Your videos inspire me to go backpack camping like I did years ago!
Like you, I enjoy tarp camping for the simplistic and light weight use of shelter. The set up you used for this trip was fantastic and versatile. But light weight tarps can get worn out after a few trips and though they are less expensive that a decent tent, I still liked to save my gear for future adventures. An idea you can use that only costs you ounces and little money on this particular set up is this.
Once you have the tarp staked out, have an old tarp that is no longer waterproof tucked under the floor of your tarp tent and fold it back over the inside of the floor portion of the shelter. Of course, have it a few inches from the outside of the walls pulled inside so rain doesn't gather under or in the floor of the tent. Fold it back over the sleeping area to help protect that area and it will give more life to your tarp. And it is easier to clean up after the trip is over. It has worked for me in the past and I will do it again in the future.
Be safe and enjoy your time in nature.

I like this configuration might try it. Love your camping adventures hope your ankle gets some rest & heal strong again. Same happened to me years ago. Very painful! Bless you

    In SO many ways-
You show and encourage women you CAN do this-
You don't waste time- your or ours..
You try shelters of different styles for different sets of weather/circumstance...
You show us every step, and then invite us in.
I've watched for several months and by the packaging on foods, gathered you were in the UK...
    Turned sound up n yepper!!
That explains why you can go out like that!!!

But I dearly love the solitude you take us to...

I watch your videos, and you do things I wouldn’t imagine doing. Bears are so much part of the consideration here in northern Canada; I could never cook in my tent. I’d be inviting mayhem. Mosquitoes are also ever-present, so the open spaces between the parts of the tarp tent would make life in the tent difficult. The peace you have camping is wonderful. I’m glad you share the experiences you have!

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea, but the takeaway for me from these tarp shelter videos is that people are actually trying to avoid real tents for some reason. If you can carry a tarp, you can carry a tent just as easily if not more easily, and will likely be a better shelter with no open seams.
