How wonderful to see and hear how much Alba and Joanna enjoy singing this number together. I found I was smiling all the way through.
These two young ladies with their lovely voices remind me of my many days in Tijuca and Leblon playing my flute, dancing and singing. I thank Maestro Chamorro for allowing me to enjoy the sound and voices of his wonderful artists. I plan to be in Figueres and Barcelona, God willing, next spring.
Alba and Joana are great singing together. That song is not an easy piece to sing, it requires good memory, clear Brazilian Portuguese diction, excellent timing, and harmony; and you have to feel the fascinating bossa music and social dynamic of the Brasil of that era.
BTW, I enjoy Alba’s swaying to the rhythm; she’s full of zest. Man, she was just a little kid with a big trumpet and a cute voice just a few years ago!
Joan Chamorro has a unique musical gift and pedagogical approach; the man is a superb teacher, he’s a national treasure of Spain and Catalunya. iViva Don Joan Chamorro!

It‘s so delightful to watch Alba singing with her eyes open. Not that it would affect the sound in any way, but it adds so much to a very joyous athmosphere of the piece.

Everything about this is absolutely wonderful! Alba is even better here (really sparkling) than in the earlier version with Rita, and Joana is also great. The arrangement is magical - so many delicate colours - and the playing is marvellous! Thank you for this miraculous young ensemble!

The more I watch this, the more I love it.
This version has more intimate camera work and I think a slightly better reproduction of the lows from the band. Joana and Alba are relaxed and having lots of fun with it, as is Scott. A little different from before but every bit as well done. Loved it.

They are Astonishing! It’s so bright, sweet and happy that it literally brought a tear to my eye . Thank you for sharing this performance. 😅
Nobody does this song like Sant Andreu. The way it sounds like a playful argument, even back when it was Rita signing Tom's part. I love it so much.

Not *quite* as good for me as the version with Rita, but it is still very, very good. Almost as good, in fact -- and I think that's really saying something, because that other one is one of the all-time greats, in my opinion! Alba is just so much fun to listen to, and on a happy song, she just lights up the stage! Great solo by Scott, who was obviously also having fun.
WOW my kudos for this excellent arrangement! Another magnificent Aguas de Marzo. The girls were amazing. What a great thing to have an experienced musician with the young musicians band. This is my favorite song by the late Tom Jobim who must be very happy after hearing this where ever he is.

The miracle of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band celebrates 15 years

"It's a little miracle," Joan Chamorro says by phone. It is not difficult to imagine that he must be pinching himself, as if fifteen years later he still thought that everything is a dream. "A miracle," he repeats. This describes the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the pedagogical project promoted by Chamorro in the Barcelona district of Sant Andreu. "That the band reaches the age of fifteen is a big deal, because we are a totally independent project: we have no help whatsoever, there are no enrollments, the students pay nothing. It's all pretty much: "Guau! How do you manage to do so many things, record so many records...?""
The enthusiasm of the Barcelona double bass player is evident even in the pandemic context, and takes flight when he talks about the special performance for the fifteenth anniversary that the big band will offer this Friday at the Palau de la Música (8 p.m.), with guests such as Andrea Motis, former member of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. Programmed by the Barcelona Jazz Festival, "it will be a vocal jazz concert". "We will record it and the idea is to produce a disc, volume three of The Magic of Voice. The first part will be with new voices and the second part with the whole big band also making a vocal repertoire. Andrea Motis will join as soloist, as well as the musicians of the quintet. We play 19 songs, and all with original arrangements for us by Joan Monné, who plays the piano in the first part", explains Chamorro.
A 2011 concert at the Palau de la Música is one of the most powerful memories Chamorro has of these fifteen years of the San Andean Jazz Band. Many of the images were included in the documentary “A film about kids and music. Sant Andreu Jazz Band”. "That night we played with figures like Jesse Davis, Terell Stafford and Wycliffe Gordon. It was beautiful." He also remembers trips like when they went to Sweden, with the whole band, and very special concerts like one with Joel Frahm, "one of the best tenor saxes in the world". "It's very nice to see how people who came from outside, like Joel Frahm and Scott Hamilton, with whom we continue to work a lot, get excited about playing with us, seeing young people with that level and that positive energy. And, also, to be told that this is good for jazz music, that this creates new audiences. To be told by people in this category is very exciting. This gives me strength to continue doing this job," he says.
Concerts, videos and almost twenty albums document a story starring, among many others, Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Rita Payés, Elsa Armengou... and that goes beyond the big band. "Of the more than 70 musicians who have passed through the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, almost 90% are dedicated to music, and in a very powerful way. Obviously Andrea, who has worldwide repercussions, but also Rita [Payés] is making an international career. Eva Fernández is doing many things, and then there are Joan Codina, Marc Martínez, Joan Mar Sauqué, Jaume Ferrer... young people who are part of the country's jazz scene. This year there are three who are leaving the big band, because when they reach the age of 20-21 they leave: Joan Martí, Joana Casanova and Marçal Perramon, and all three are already working and doing their careers at esmuc, liceu or Taller de Músics".
The concert at the Palau de la Música will be with capacity limited to 50%; that is, the first 1,000 people authorized by the Government. Therefore, it will be far from historical nights like the one in 2011 with the Palace full to the brim. And with the uncertainty imposed by the context. "People still do a little thing to go to places. But we will do what we have to do and we will play," says Chamorro, who wanted to move the concert forward according to Joan Anton Cararach, the director of the Jazz Festival, because "concerts have to be done, they can't be stopped, even though we know fewer people will obviously come." "Things will change and we will return to normal," he adds.
Soul, Brazilian touches and "a lot of swing and improvisation" will link the jazz soul of a group that has had to adapt to the reality of 2020. "As with the whole profession, this pandemic has also affected us, but we will not complain, that there are people who have it a lot worse off than us," says Chamorro. The magnitude of the impact is such that they have only been able to perform three concerts throughout the year, and have seen performances cancelled or postponed in Switzerland and France. "This has affected us financially, of course," he admits. And the situation has also complicated the rehearsals, because we have not been able to rehearse together but only by sections: now the saxes, now the trumpets, now the trombones... But we've been doing it." For example, they have made some recordings and released albums such as the two volumes of Jazzing 10, the first in May and dedicated to Clifford Brown, and the second in September. In addition, recordings have emerged dedicated to members of the big band such as the saxophonist Joana Casanova and the pianist Jan Domènech.
