My Yakuza backlog is getting a bit crowded.
I just bought the whole series I had already beat 6 and have almost beat 0 so I feel that
Right there with you guys.
I just found this game last week and it’s my first Yakuza game so…yeah
I loved how Ben included the name ASS CATCHEM just so Jones would say it.
5:44 I too, would get a mortal wound if a big boi did that to me.
I would called that Morale wound :(
Ain't no ointment for that.
Yeah, no recovering from that....your pride is dead.
Yakuza quickly became a top 5 favorite franchise for me when Yakuza 0 came out. I can’t wait to get home and play this game.
Same. Series really grew in me
@@dreamerabe on me* 🤦
Yasss king, you dropped this btw 👑
@@HollyMontgomery98 Oh I've been looking for that!
@@Not_Liquid it ain’t yours
I never get tired of facil expression and animations on Yakuza series. Look at those graphics, it's amazing.
Nothing will beat Like A Dragon the bread scene
So this is the old gametrailers crew?
yes!
I knew the reviewer sounded familiar.
For years I’ve wanted to play the Yakuza games, but they were too far into the series with 7 games, that I knew I wouldn’t have the time to play them all... I sadly had to accept the fact that it may just be a series I’d have to pass on.... but thankfully Judgment came out and let’s me jump in. And so far, I’m loving it.
Yakuza 0 is literally a prequel that is best played as the first game in the series, kiwami is a remake of yakuza 1, kiwami 2 is a remake of yakuza 2.
This comment just made me spend 60 bucks
LMAO incredible game though huh?? I think it's worth every penny which is a rare thing for me to say about games nowadays
Just play one a year, you'll be fine haha. If you try to play them all back to back, you'll get frustrated xD
Just picked this up yesterday already played 12hours I love it just what I needed right now intriguing main story and fun weird side storys. I've laughed out loud more times than I have with a game since southpark. Probably spent a couple of hours playing arcade games darts and drone racing there's just so much to do. Just making friends feels good and it has its pay offs definitely a solid 9 for me so far.
I didn't even mention the combat which feels better than it ever has to me jumping off a wall with a flying kick is awesome.
Currently sits at an astounding 8.9 user score on MetaCritic, it seems RGG Studio can do no wrong and maybe have a better series than Yakuza on the horizon with Yagami. Can't wait to play Friday!
Kiryu is the more iconic character BUT Yagami is still a great character (i grew attached to the Yakuza characters through the 7 main games)
Honestly don't expect that, Yagami is a famous ex pop star and he's a pretty big name, yakuza have a tendency to get names like him for only one game. Like if it's using the likeness of an actor, they are famous somehow, be it the 3 bosses in 0 being yakuza film stars, or beat takeshi in yakuza 6: Then expect the character to probably die in yakuza or never to return. The character who was removed from the game was also played by a famous actor. Also a few like the police officer in yakuza 4 who did aikido (and who isn't in the remaster cuz of this). SO yeah, yagami is a character who uses their actors likeness and that actor is famous, meaning he's a 1 and done.
@@James-gj8rn of course he is, Yagami has only had one game while kiryu has had 7.
I've always respected the Yakuza games but never really enjoyed playing them. However, I'm looking forward to playing Judgement and getting into the series.
@@IskandarTheWack the tanimura model changed because the actor got embroiled in a drug scandal (which he was acquitted of but he decided to leave the entertainment industry because he felt that no one had his back). what happened to tanimura is similar to what happened to pierre taki and hamura. please. educate yourself before you talk out of your ass.
An excellent review from my favorite review team. Thanks Ben :).
I can always rely on easy allies.
Thanks for this!
The Turnabout Yakuza
7:28 😂 great edit!
I've never played a Yakuza game but jumped into judgement and I loved every bit of it
Start from Yakuza 0 and go from there
Yup same here awesome game!!!
Judgment has already sucked me in, I'm LOVING this game. This may even be on equal grounds with Yakuza 0 IMO.
I'm worried that this game doesn't have any appeal in the western market. Seems like a blast and an awesome spiritual successor to Yakuza.
Don't worry. A bit of FYI, Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1 got PS4 'Greatest Hits' re-release and that means both games already sold at least 500k-1 mill copies worldwide (probably 300-400k in the west). And last year Yakuza 6 listed in April NPD at no 17 which is the 1st Yakuza title who got through NPD chart and also the biggest Yakuza series launch in US history.
segabits.com/blog/2018/05/22/yakuza-6s-records-biggest-series-launch-in-us-sales-history/
The series have enough fanbase right now so i'm quite confident Judgment will do well in the west.
My only worry is people getting burned out on Kamurocho...they really need to move cities ASAP, already 7 direct titles in continuity that take place largely in the same city (seemingly Y7 will too). As much as I love them, with the stories setting them apart, they do start to bleed together. I don't see the mass appeal for something like a sports title, where people will want to keep playing essentially the same game repeatedly, I hope they figure that out before the franchise starts to nosedive.
@@dreamerabe and for the most part, it was.
Great review, Ben! The one review I was waiting for.
10/10 review just to hear Jones say "Ass Catchem."
This should be 9 not 8 because this is almost a masterpiece.
That reminds me of a soundtrack in yakuza 0 called "Ore tachi wa Judgement"
A member of boyband in japan! Called “SMAP”
Finally my trusted source uploaded their review!
this and the fist of north star game are great games made by the same studio that made the yakuza games
Really good addition to the Yakuza universe
Not really, it just copy pastes everything and does most of the usual things worse than Yakuza. The story and characters are great as usual for a videogame.
@Orion Lockheed nothing is a stretch. It's clearly the same engine, city and universe.
@Orion Lockheed It's set in the same location with the same gameplay loop.
@Orion Lockheed it is literally in the same universe and follows the same timeline. it takes place in kamurocho (which has seen changes from Yakuza 6) which is fictional btw. has the tojo clan which is also fictional. and while i am only about 4 hours in i already found a reference to the original yakuza, if you smoke a cig at the construction site (formally little asia) the workers will talk about the bar Bantam and how it was called Bacchus and people were murdered there. and if you know your Yakuza lore the event they are refering to is when Kiryu meets Haruka for the first time at Bacchus
Good Job Ben!
Real question tho, Is Punk Ass Abe in that game ?
Abraham M. that’s literally a NPC name from yakuza 1, and he’s a freaking legend.
I never played any of the Yakuza series and I really should. I'm downloading this now and can't wait to play it.
You had me at "Ass Catchem"
When the score is shown at the end, what song is playing? Giving me Nightwish flashbacks
I really hope they return to 60fps for future iterations of the Yakuza games and spin offs. The new engine is great, but the lower FPS makes combat a tad bit sluggish compared to the silky smooth Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. Something to improve on for when the PS5 comes around.
Great review, by the by.
They can't return to 60fps because those were obtainable with the old engine. The new engine is a lot more advanced and handles A LOT more than the old engine since it pretty much killed loading times/screens and made the gameplay almost entirely seamless.
@@FuzzyDlop The PS5 will be capable of 120FPS, so 60FPS should be easily obtainable. I understand that things are a bit shaky to begin with, but the engine should be optimised when new hardware comes about. If this is the technical limitation of the PS4 hardware, that's unfortunate, but understandable.
Its not the fps problem its the engine itsrlf. Also combat plays fine just different.
Those two were only 60fps because they were also made for the PS3...which means you'll probably get your wish as they'll most likely keep supporting the PS4 after the PS5 is out.
If it gives you any hope, 60fps with this engine is entirely possible....On a decent PC lol. I run Kiwami 2 at pretty high settings at roughly 50-60 fps, and any dips are entirely on my end as my processor is old but serviceable.
Just finished the game.... Sooooo freaking good
music at the end?

Will you guys be reviewing samurai shodown, and bloodstained?
I believe Brad said on the recent Frame Trap that he's reviewing Bloodstained :)
Blood mentioned yesterday that he went through the scripts for the Judgment and Bloodstained reviews, so the latter should be posted soon as well.
so happy this has english voices
While I personally wouldn't dare, I am glad it's opening the franchise to a larger audience. Deserve as much recognition as they can get.
U like
This game is so good, I want a sequel and sequels to said sequel.
Yea, these games are living breathing worlds
I may buy it with English cast In it yes
just to know one thing :
update size?
Will always love a Ben Moore review, regardless of my interest in the game.
Thanks Allies!
Guy it
I haven't played any Yakuza games. Which one should I get on a ps4 as my first?
I hadn’t played one until a week ago when I got Yakuza O and I couldn’t be happier with the decision. It’s a prequel set in 1988 so it’s a great entry point if you don’t want to feel lost in continuity.
Zero, definately.
Thanks I will try Zero then
Definitely Yakuza 0.
Though if you're interested, you don't actually need to play any of the Yakuza games to play Judgement. It's its own thing.
"Ass Catchem" Wow. Just wow.
Is that name in the Japanese version I wonder?
I wonder if Ben knows that you could get arrested if you take too look when you’re in a fight.
No mention that the Karaoke is gone but aside from that i'm enjoying the game so far (I'm a bit disappointed that Karaoke is gone though although the Karaokekan building is still there :(
yeah, that's a bummer since in the Yakuza games there's a song called "Judgement"
@@mastermp2 Haha yeh, that song was fun to play
BREAKING THE WORLDDDDDDD, BREAKING THE RULESSSS, SHIIAWASEEEEEE TENDERNESSSSSS :)
@@dreamerabe Yeah i suppose that makes sense, i never thought of it like that but Takuya Kimura (Yagami's actor) was a singer himself, it would have been nice to keep Karaoke in there :)
@@James-gj8rn i think that's actually the reason there isn't any karaoke in the game. Getting him to record a song would apparently be really expensive because of his massive music career.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic ok fair enough :)
The 'ONLY' review that matters!
As much as I love the Yakuza franchise, I am getting tired of the Kamurochou area. I really hope they expand the playing universe in the next YAkuza game.
You mean like 5 that had 4 cities to explore outside of kamurocho?
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic While true, every game still takes place mostly in Kamurocho. Sotenbori is the next most repeated city. I do love the franchise, but it can't survive forever on almost identical content.
@@RagnarokMic not 5, you only get to kamurocho in the laat part of game.

What ost is that at the end of the video?
its the secret boss theme for judgment
Fiercest warrior
Pretty sure it's just the VR theme.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic i think its called Last Assassin XIV
Great review Ben
Are there any spoilery things about Yakuza in here? I'm halfway through the series (Yakuza 3) and I wouldn't want to encounter something like that ):
Nope, perfectly safe. Doesn't deal with the same characters, and takes place years after the most recent Yakuza.
The Yakuza series it's one of the only games that i don't skip the cutscenes on my first playthrough
The story is that good.
I wounder will we get the rest of the yakuza games
Soon. Be patient.
I've only played Yakuza games on PC and it became my favorite series. Hope to see Judgement on PC one day as well :D
Looks like a big boi slipped... in.
Going to get this game this weekend
4:38 Ash Catch'em?
no there actually is an npc called Ass Catch'em he's a pervert
i played 2 yakuza games. I can't imagine visiting Kamurocho again, it's a nice map but why use it for every single game they make???
Well, actually, they've used many maps. Yakuza 5 has like 5 different districts that are all over Japan, 2, 5, and 0 all have Sotenbori Osaka, and Yakuza 3 has Okinawa in addition to Kamurocho. And Kamurucho is expanded in every single game, or in the case of 0, completely changed to fit the 1980s period. Also, in Yakuza 4 and 5, you can go in the sewers as well as on a large network of rooftops that go all over the city. Kamurocho has changed a ton over the series.
So generous!
Need a Sleeping Dogs sequel.
Not realy, sleeping dogs isn't all that special outside of it's dlc.
@@IskandarTheWack well that's not true at all.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic It was a shooter with some pretty meh arkham style combat (inferior to arkham combat), that's about it. It's dlc was cool cuz it referenced a shit ton of things and was as wacky as shit, but the main campaign was pretty damn boring.
Yakuza is nothing like it, but it's vastly superior.
@Ryder Barton I have extremely varied game taste, I'm tired of non vr first person shooters, and a lot of the gta style games are as boring as shit (even without playing a lot of them), but I play super unique games,, like games that innovate new genres of their own.
Sleeping Dogs is kind of a generic gta clone with some great dlc.
SO GENEROUS
Say it with me YA-KUZ-AH
Great Review Ben love and respect amazing game
I personally don't think a game with stuff like Threat-level ever deserves better than 7
Ok you won me over with ass catch'em🤣
Sana-chan ❤️
amazing game
has the best final boss
I feel like Ben has given sooooo many 8.0's haha.
EA in general barely criticize games unless they are absolutely awful. If they're decent games and extremely hyped up they usually ignore the issues and/or scummy microtransactions. I assume they do this so they don't get blacklisted by the companies and so they don't make their viewers angry. That's why you can't fully trust youtubers like them since they're never going to be completely honest in their "critiques."
@@EasyAllies Should have checked his username first, Blood. Haha. I'm guessing you were replying to him specifically. I was just pointing out a coincidence really.
another great exclusive for my ps4 pro :) .. i so love my ps4 nothing but great exclusive content :)
Ass Catchem - gotta grab em all!!
Lol “so generous”
Although one complaint I have so far is that there's no karaoke minigame, I know it's a nitpick, but Karaoke was always my favorite minigame in the Yakuza series, that I felt a little disappointed that they didn't include one in. Since they have a dub, maybe there could've been an English translation, or for those who stick with the Japanese, maybe have the song with the Kanji and Romanji to help learn, and maybe if you decide to get a girlfriend, that could've been a dating option.
It was a money/licensing issue to this. Takuya Kimura is also a famous singer and getting him to sing would require a contract with his label and more money, it was talked about on a Japanese site
Great analysis, ben.
It looks so good 🤤
Soooo generous!
This game is great but don’t dare playing it with english dub
It’s so much better in Japanese
Yup. Japanese voice acting is good
Meh dub fr me
@@Iamlewis93 Yeah, the dub for this game is really solid, unlike the original Yakuza 1, despite the only good choice being Mark Hamill as Majima.

Ass... Catchem....?
Great review but meh, as i thought, nothing can top Yakuza 0. Bummer.
I mean it's still dragon engine with multiple styles and new gameplay mechanics.
I honestly feel there's a few Yakuza games that are better then 0.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic I liked 6 more than 0 personally, though that was after being with the series since the ps2.
@@IskandarTheWack one of my favorites is ishin, but i get people haven't played that one for the obvious reasons.
Lol, i thought so too, until i played Judgment.
This DOES top 0 for me.
Reminds me of sleeping dogs for some reason
Thanks Xbox gamepass
8.0
There was once a team of hungry devs who created this masterpiece Kamurocho BUT
Later the ve got lazy and sticked with it for 2 generations lol Im not buying this money milking crap.
I do still love the stories, but I also think Kamurocho should have passed along with Kiryu. It's really going to hurt the franchise moving forward, as many aren't as forgiving as I am, as long as I enjoy the story (and the game doesn't suck).
I’m tired of the combat just after watching this video lol. Can’t imagine playing a whole game with that clunky gameplay
Some of the best melee combat around (only the top few really outclass it), clunky, not really. Might not offer the smoothness in simplicity as an Arkham-like core, but it's fluid, frenetic, and offers a solid range of moves. As far as beat-em-ups go, really nothing to compare right now.
If only combat was on "realism" level of Sleeping Dogs - that would be a bare minimum not to destroy all immersion for me ... I say for me, nothing more. That goes for all Yakuzas.
So you want Yakuza to realistic combat? Good luck with that.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic So you never played Sleeping Dogs but you want to make smart ass coments without knowing that combat in there also IS NOT REALISTIC - THAT IS WHY I WROTE "realistic" not realistic! Smdh
@@phaedrussocrates7636 i have played sleeping dogs multiple times, and my problem isn't with the amount of realism you want, so can we not get into semantics please. I just don't think more "realistic" combat works for thise games. Because the contrast between the arcadey felling combat and the grounded story, is one of the main things that makes thise games special.
Really a pity, I'd say Yakuza has the better combat system, Sleeping Dogs is a bit smoother with an Arkham-like core, but there's just so many moves you can dig into in Yakuza. Majima in Yakuza 0 is one of the single funnest characters in beat-em-up history, by my account.
Glad it didn't get anything higher than an 8 but even that is too high. 7.8 would be more appropriate.
Nah. 8 is fair.
Crazy, this game is top notch
It's crazy how these clowns are giving one of the best games/gems of this generation 8's and 7's while giving games like fortnite 9's and 10's
Arab Pride are you sure?
Right right, except they haven't reviewed fortnite, so
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic Im obviously talking about the majority of other gaming media outlets
