I think the best part about the new party is that none of them are young, attractive heroes like we're used to in jrpg's. They're all middle aged normal people and that makes it more fun to me.
This is one of those seriously daunting series to get into. I know I would enjoy them and this one looks awesome but I still haven’t even played the first game lol.

I would have liked this review to include their thoughts on the english dub. I heard it’s actually really good and even has some great actors like George Takei.
As of chapter 5, it's really good. Especially one of the femalw characters during an emotional moment, i was surprised how well the main cast does it. Side characters are all good or decent so far as well.
@アーロンです Yeh because they don't know Japanese... that makes sense. The developers took the time to record an entire English cast, so that more people could enjoy the game in their native language. The "English dub LUL" crowd is quickly getting old these days.
If the dub was only okay or par for the course, I would be playing with the Japanese dub, but the English dub is SOLID. Great performances and a nearly perfect lip-synch, it's above and beyond what most would have expected.
@アーロンです Or...and I know this is a strange concept to you, you could just...let people use whatever dub they like and not give them shit about it. Seems like an awful waste of energy getting mad at how other people play a game that they purchased.
This is my first introduction to the Yakuza series, and now I gotta go back and play all the others because this one is in my top 3 favorite games of all time.
I'm 10 hours in, and have finished every previous entry including Judgment. I think there's a lot to love about it, the combat is great, characters are fun, and the themes of unemployment make for a great party dynamic. Plus the enemy designs are really silly and creative, and there's a whole bestiary with almost 200 enemy types. That being said, the game feels really slow, not just with longer combat and more encounters (which I'm personally ok with but some people wont like it). The story doesn't have much momentum and takes forever to get through a chapter.
@アーロンです Yea I love long winded slow JRPGs. I feel like the cutscenes drag more than usual in this one, and the game seems like it was packed without them. Honestly I don't mind though, this game is 100% how I wanted it to be. I don't think it's nearly as polished as Judgment but it's really good either way.
Great review. Wonder how many mini games will be in this. I am disappointed we have to wait for the PS5 upgrade in March. Even more so as someone who has brought every Yakuza game since the original on PS2.
The "fans" that are so angry at the combat change are willfully ignoring a great game. I've played about 6 hours now and I feel very neutral about the combat difference so far, but it's insane to me that this would completely ruin the entire game for some people. Especially because Judgement changed a lot about Yakuza but it still didn't necessarily feel fresh whereas Yakuza 7 feels entirely fun and fresh in so many ways.
My god this game is is undersold! I can't describe how surprised I was by this game. Its frickin' great thus far! Goin on the top ten list of all time based on current forecasts!
I get the sense this is the kind of game that you splap a 8.5 on because you're trying to be rational, and it's totally understandable... But deep down you *know* it will stay with you way, way more than pretty much any other game released this year so far. Kasuga and his group are easily Persona-level in charisma and feels. We'll see in the GOTY discussions between the Allies, but I'm betting Ben will push for Like A Dragon to be near the top of the list.
I don't think the downgrade in combat complexity was delved into nearly enough here. Sure there's more STUFF you can do, but the demand at which the game expects you to know the mechanics are totally opposite to previous games. Seamless, continuous combat in which you slowly perfect a single fighting style sounds a lot more appealing than having 3+ classes per person interacting with 3 other characters with as many classes, but up against enemies who have no similar strategy as your own team. I guess it's all about preference, but obviously the gameplay is going to be sharper for a gameplay that a team has perfected over 2 decades.
@Scotty so Im watchin the review of dragon i dont know if i will like that I didnt know it was a new style before I bought it do u think once i get done with 6 i should try it or skip
The game is very good abd especially the story. I cryed like a baby at the ending. But i really really wish it had the Judgement combat system as an option. The turn based battle is not too bad however it really does miss that freedom feels from previous yakuza games imo. Overall a solid yakuza game.
In the original Japanese version, I would get a WEAK prompt whenever I used an attack that an enemy already registered into the Sujidex was weak to, it's not happening with my english version, why?
Thank you for this review. Been looking for reviews of this game that a) isn't made by places like IGN and Gamespot, and b) doesn't have an annoying staccato voiced reviewer shouting at you in the same tone in fervent rhythmic fashion for 19 mins. The latter I watched two of, and besides the headache and angsty feeling didn't give any sort of sense to me as to what this game is like. You on the other hand made an excellent review!
I absolutely loved this game from start to finish. At the same time I understand the core Yakuza fanbase which may be disappointed. This installment changing from an action-adventure game to a turn-based system is quite a leap.
Well done on this look at the game. IGN rushed through the game focusing on the combat and the grind and ignored talking about the fun side activities, bonding with characters, and how patience is a reward. YLAD knows how much fun it has with itself, and shares this with players.
It's their first RPG, so I definitely expected some rough edges. However, they've got a rock solid foundation to build off of for Ichiban's next adventure imo.
I’ve ordered mine since I had a voucher after buying Xbox series x, I got this under £30, never really played any Yakuza games and I’m completely new to this style of games. I’m not sure if I should play any other yakuza game before starting this. Any recommendations? 😅
You can start with this one, no problem. It's kind of a soft reboot/a new beginning after a whole saga. You'll miss out on recognizing old locations shown in a new light here, as well as a ton of Easter eggs and references. For example, a lot of people from the past games' substories (side quests) reappear as "summons", on minigames, or on other side stuff. But to recognize them, you'd need to play at least Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2, and that's dozens of hours just to get that sense of "hey! I remember that guy!" for a couple of minutes and then move on back to the core story. The main story, characters and all that are new, and Like a Dragon happens kinda in parallel to the past entries, which form a full arch up to Yakuza 6. So just dive in Like a Dragon and have fun. You can check the original saga after if you like it.
@@50Personas I’ve seen gameplay of Yakuza 6, I wanted to try it back when I was on PlayStation but at that time the game was expensive and I was trying save money, the yakuza series look really good in terms of style, it’s kind of a shame for me that I never heard of the games until few years back when yakuza 6 was out. I guess because of the new lockdown in my country, now is the best time to play the games. I’m going to download the ones that I can for free through game pass. Thanks for the recommendation, I’m super excited and looking forward to play it. :)
@@hamcookie2825 IIRC, Game Pass has Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami (a remake for the first in the series) and Yakuza Kiwami 2 (same for the second game). You could play these in that order, which would be the chronological order of the saga, but I recommend playing the Kiwami ones first and then going to 0. Zero is that kind of prequel that does capitalize on previous knowledge of the series, as it was released after 5 and casts at least one major character in a totally new (and very, VERY surprising) light. After these three, if you like them all, then you'll probably want to see the whole Kazuma Kiryu saga through, and there's a Remastered Collection with Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 on PS4. As the name says, these are not remakes, just remasters, so you'll feel the difference in engine, visuals and all. The Collection goes for 60 bucks, but I got it for 30 on that Big on Japan sale a couple months back. Then you have Yakuza 6 as a native PS4 game, the one that concludes the Kiryu saga. Note that 1 through 6 are direct sequels and it's kinda hard to play them out of order/in isolation.

As a yakuza fan, I'm glad this is appealing to the jrpg crowd..I hope persona fans play this too...that being said, Yakuza at its heart has always been a jrpg..it just wasn't turn based. .as far as turn based systems goes..this has one of the best turn based combat systems
@@UNSTABLE111 The combat system is very good I will say,but if you played Trails of Cold Steel, those series for me atleast have waaaay better combat system than Yakuza LaD :),still I'm surprised how good it is in Yakuza, when It was first revealed as a turn based RPG,my first reaction was:"Yep that's a skip",but now I'm loving it.
Game is garnering a lot of positive reviews and it might best Yakuza 0’s reception in the West. The series has always been huge in Asian markets, but Yakuza 0 really helped the series gain many new fans in other parts of the World. Now I really wanted to play this, but the turn based combat turns me off. I’ve never liked this style of gameplay, since I was a kid. I hope this stays as a spin-off and this combat isn’t adapted to the main series.
I tried this on game pass and was highly amused by it for the opening but the homeless thing dragged out so long I never got past it before dropping the game.
@@adelinobabic3378 Yeah, the difficulty spike is a like a huge jump 3 chapters before the last. But I also feel they did not want to make it too hard. But in any case, the other Yakuza games are not that difficult either, not sure if its because i have so much experience in playing fighting games like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, entire Tekken and virtua fighter series and pretty much every fighting game. Timing, spacing, decision making and figuring out optimal damage came sort of natural for me really quick when playing the previous Yakuza games. But I mainly play these games for the story.
Dev: I have great idea for a game. Sega: Just put it in Yakuza as a mini game. Dev: But it's an RPG game. Sega: Well turn the fighting system in Yakuza into an RPG.

Woah this review didn't get many views, I wonder if it's due to all the marketing coming from Xbox this time?
*I'M SUCH A MESS*
"I'm lost I'm no good at this"
Great game,20 hours in and I'm only on Chapter 5,I love turn based RPG's so the change doesn't bother me at all,if you love RPG's your gonna love this one for sure.
@@redchili6927 no.
Wow I love the wacky rpg take. Truly original
Wait, the voice of the reviewer.... is he the same guy from GT?!!?
Yes, we're all from GT. We started Easy Allies shortly after GameTrailers was shut down. Welcome back! -Bloodworth
I tried this on game pass and was highly amused by it for the opening but the homeless thing dragged out so long I never got past it before dropping the game.
4K content? Nice
This game is phenomenal, and I love Ichi! I wish it was more difficult though. They made it way too easy and only normal difficulty available
I read the difficulty spikes up last third..where you have to grind a bit..
¿ Should newcomers start with Yakuza 7 ?
Sure
Dev: I have great idea for a game.
Sega: Just put it in Yakuza as a mini game.
Dev: But it's an RPG game.
Sega: Well turn the fighting system in Yakuza into an RPG.
Turnbased* rpg
Damn, I can't wait to play this game! The quirkier the better imo lol
Wait... It's Persona now? lol i was not expecting that at all. That's really interesting.
Never played Yakuza. Might need to jump in.
Love it, and it will be a must buy on my PS5 (when it comes out). Thanks for the review Ben!
I feel like the era of games being able to get by just by throwing everything at the wall and see what sticks needs to be over. I feel like way too many game reviewers see tedious, boring combat as just a tiny problem.
The combat in this isn't tedious or boring though
The combat in this game is pretty damn fun though. The positives easily outweigh the negatives.
Everyone gangsta till the english dub kicks in
This game looks bizarre and i love it for that.
This is easily my game of the year if RE VIllage doesn't steal the show.
i guess the game can... drag on huh?
@@oasisbeyond you a yakuza, then?
jk
@@oasisbeyond drag on...dragon... like a dragon...
@@roynobody You mean, Drag-on Dragoon?

you seemed to cut after every fighting move. With it being a huge change to go to turn based, I would like to see how it plays out, and get an idea of the game.
Very mass effect 2
Easy Allies should be the official Yakuza critics on the internet.
