Ben's love for Doom has really shined brighter and brighter, this review is like the culmination. I was watching Doom 2016's review yesterday and was surprised to see it was written by Huber. Of course, when you think about it, Huber & Doom make a lot of sense, not sure what I'm getting at, but I've really come to see Ben as the Doom Knight. I'm really happy such a good game exists, for all to enjoy.

2/3rds of the way through the campaign and I can confidently say that this is best action FPS I've ever played. Holy goodness, some of these late-game combat encounters are absolutely bonkers on Nightmare.

Started to play on Nightmare... and it kicked my balls so many times! But all the time I succeed after a long battle, it's so satisfying! I spent hours on retrying parts of the game because it was that hard for me, but I have no intention to lower the difficulty because the game is so much fun this way!
Great review, Ben. I can confirm this game is demanding. I beat all of DOOM 2016 in Ultra-Violence (Hard) and now pretty early into the game I'm dying multiple times during major battle arenas in Hurt Me Plenty (Normal). Enemies are fast, surprisingly hard to hit, relentless, and dangerous. In small groups it's manageable but when they gang up on you it's extremely intense.
This game is a mf'ing masterpiece and this is the best review I've seen so far. Almost perfectly matches up with the experience I'm having playing the game. As I've said elsewhere: "While it requires a lot of you as a player, it also rewards your efforts. Its punishing combat makes you feel incredibly powerful once you get the rhythm of the battle dance down. The same goes for the story. If you put the time into reading and watching what the game gives you, you'll be rewarded with a well-crafted and at times fan-servicey (in the best way) story. Even the level design and platforming will keep you engaged. I also love how all three of the game's major game play systems (exploration, upgrades, combat) all loop back in on and build upon each other in meaningful ways; the traversal/platforming keeps exploration engaging while looking for upgrades and secrets, the upgrade system helps you with traversal/platforming/exploration and buffs you for combat, and the combat, well, that's why we're all here, right? If you want a low effort shooter to blast through, look elsewhere. If you want a single player challenge that respects your intelligence and time, you can do no better than Doom Eternal."
This game is perfect. The fluid combat with its intertwined systems is constantly engaging, the music is outstanding, and the environmental designs are breathtaking. My only qualm is getting boxed into a corner when trying to maneuver around. I wish the dash move would physically push enemies out of your way.
@@kentatakao6863 glory kill health drops can almost entirely be replaced with blood punch and icebomb health builds. chainsaw ammo can be surprisingly well supplemented with barrel ammo drops, map knowledge, and ammo efficiency. try turning on famine mode if you're really looking for a challenge/master class on efficiency.

If the Fast Travel function were there from the start, and the mandatory arena battles could be toggled on replays so you could just focus on the missing collectibles? I'd have preferred that (unless I missed something?) but that's just a minor hang-up for an otherwise cracking game.
I'm really happy to see that Ben enjoyed it so much. I'm on the second to last level, and the entire experience has been amazing. Best FPS campaign I've played since, well, Doom 20016 (maybe better). I definitely struggled a bit on the first couple levels. Eventually using all the abilities (flame belch, ice bomb, grenade, chainsaw, dash, etc.) constantly became almost second nature and the combat really clicked.

Took a bit, but I learned that with a game like this, don’t fight the mechanics. You might want to, you might already be adjusted to the way previous iterations went. Give it a moment, and realize why they made those decisions. Once you, it’ll gradually click... and then you’re in for a wild ride.
Incredible review, great work! You guys may have sold me on this one!

DOOM Eternal is a new benchmark for first person shooter games. And id really know what a game is like... They didn't even tried to get away with all that illogical bullshit the game has. Because they wanted to build a FUN GAME, not a "realistic" game lack of creativity and boring ideas. Ammo here, health pickups there conveniently placed, convenient platforming, markers that show you what to do, where to go and I am talking about the green lights all the time that tells you, hey, you there, come here! Glory kills give you health? Chainsawing gives you ammo? What sense does it make? Nothing? But it's supposed to be a game! And do these mechanics work? YES! Absolutely! Id made a game here. Not something that wants to be look realistic and find lame excuses about things that are not realistic. More GAMES like this, please! DOOM Eternal is such a masterpiece!
TheSnoozeFox I couldn’t get into Doom 2016, at least the demo. These games look awesome but I’m just not a big FPS fan (more of an ARPG fan in the vein of Dark Souls and Nioh). I’m tempted to try this one because of how much love it’s getting though.
I think this might be my favourite video game of all time. The story is no Witcher 3 but it’s still amazing in a minimalist way (much like 2016), the music is awesome and gameplay is masterfully crafted. Only minor flaw might be the way the marauder destroys the combat flow (one slayer gate is hell AHAHAHAHAHA)
Completed it on Nightmare on my first playthrough and no other single-player game has given me the satisfaction on completion like this game did. Excellent game all through, 10/10.
Battle Mode is really not as good as I anticipated. It has so much potential, but I feel so meh after every match no matter if I win or lose. I feel like it has more than just one issue that would need to be addressed for it to be where it needs to be to match the single player. I really don't see myself playing more of that mode. Fixing the lag would come a long way for sure though. The Campaign on the other hand really exceeded my already high expectations. Can't praise it enough.
Honestly 2016’s generic multiplayer is miles better than Eternal’s “unique” take on multiplayer. Would’ve preferred a retread of 2016’s multiplayer with more maps
Great review! I'm loving the game, savouring every moment. On Ultra-Violence it's perfectly balanced with really hard sections that you just have to master.
This game is an absolute Masterpiece. Every sector is so well crafted (With the exception of some level designs: Some were great, some were not). This game is such a unique experience, I will really enjoy TLOU2 and RE3 but I predict the pacing of those games will kind of piss me off a bit (Already tried so with Metro Expdus). But, like Huber says: “Artist’s Vision”.
Awesome review. I'd have to take some points down because I've had a lot of bugs/glitches on the PS4, a common one is after replaying levels with cheats codes you infamously can bug out the combat shotgun grenade mode and the heavy cannon scope mod. I've had many other ones from not being able to progress in the campaign and milestones that were completed but aren't reflected in the milestone tracker / trophy list.
Just beat it... Really fun game. I think it improved on the original on almost every way possible. I do generally prefer the more linear story routes, like in 2016, the hub is just so well designed in Eternal that I don't mind that change in style. It also allowed for a very diverse level design that was greatly missing from 2016. My GOTY so far. Great review.
This game is so good and is mechanically a big step up from the previous entry. One thing i’m not a big fan of is the dated floating platforms, spinning chains, teleporters and jump pads etc.
for battlemode, on pc, the games are SUPER fast paced, and VERY competitive, and i disagree, if they introduce content, it does have longevity. The people i have talked too in game, mostly, say they are blown away by how they innovated multiplayer play. then again, battlemode on pc is way different than what your footage showed. Super well done video, btw. loved it!

Battle mode has been a thrill ride for me, but it needs more variety in maps and modes to keep it around. Collecting cosmetics feels pointless for a mode that people will be over in a few weeks
I'm currently about the start the last level in this game. So far, I'm extremely disappointed with the story. Yes, the story is most likely not what you are playing Doom Eternal for, but it's still just bad. The story in Doom 2016 wasn't mind blowing or revolutionary by any means. But it was simple, easy to follow and provided good motivation to continue to the next objective. In Doom Eternal, I'm only playing it for the combat. Good thing the combat is fantastic.
I'm sorry but what? You are literally fighting to save the EARTH! What more motivation do you need to destroy everything, I sure as hell know the thought of entire families being slaughtered motivated me enough. Plus the story itself could be better I will agree. But the lore and actual locations provide a rich story for me. Especially for a Doom game which is what I play it for at the end of the day.
@@kieranduffy3434 Even if the overall motivation is to save the earth, it's rather unclear why you go where you're going and what you're doing without reading logs.
@Pojosamaneo Yes, there wasn't much story in Doom 2016. But it was fairly clear. Kill the demons on mars and stop Olivia Pierce from opening a portal to hell. In Doom Eternal there was lots of lore in the codex entries, but the actually story was just confusing for me.
@@Ayoul I can understand that first, but towards mid-game you start to understand that...SPOILERS You saving the Earth is going to destroy the world of the Makyrs, and from that I don't find it hard to understand, through in some backstory of the Doom Slayer and I believe there is a great story, which I will agree can be confusing at the start and you motivation is simply saving the Earth but as you progress the stakes and magnitude of what you are doing become realised and then it becomes really engaging.
@@EasyAllies awh thats disappointung. I thought there was quite a few great things to react to. And im always excited to see your reactions. I guess next time then. Thanks bloodworth
I've honestly never been let down by any Doom game, and very few other titles including God of War and Bioshock. Sure hope that Half-Life 3 is also damn good... whenever it's finally out, lol.
Here's my hot take: most of the people whining about Eternal are just bad at it; and upset they can't sleepwalk through it like they could 2016. Also go back and try 2016 after finishing Eternal; it's so slow and easy now.
Sounds about right, people whining about having to turn the game down to easy smh. Then they try and mask their bad play with "I just don't like the tone of this game compared to 2016" no you just suck and aren't willing to get better, despite being paid to play video games.
Good review, as usual. I'm enjoying the moment-to-moment gameplay of Eternal, but the story is a complete mess. Doom 2016 had such a focused, effective, and well-presented narrative, but Id simply went far too wide with Eternal. The game has a six-hour-long cold open before it starts answering any of your questions about the plot.
I am 64 and my reaction speed is not what it was but I can still clear a room of top demons just by taking in the battlefield being strategic and cronostrike.
so I can promise anyone if they keep playing they will get the hang of it.
every time I play it I get better and jumping from a ledge in slow-mo while I take my skill shots never gets old, they have taken a massive risk with going all out with this iteration but I am so glad they did.
one of the best games I have played for a long long time.
64? more like DOOM 64 :D
That's great, but it's still not a Doom game, it's just another convoluted shooter. Misses the point entirely.
Varun Mahan Doom had to innovate. I just hope they can focus on going bigger with story and less gimmicky boss fights looking at u Last Boss 🤨
F*****g Awesome! That's what's up

Completely agree with this. Hugely disappointing to me as someone who just replayed 2016 and was excited to see where they took things.
@@Ayoul I can understand that first, but towards mid-game you start to understand that...SPOILERS
You saving the Earth is going to destroy the world of the Makyrs, and from that I don't find it hard to understand, through in some backstory of the Doom Slayer and I believe there is a great story, which I will agree can be confusing at the start and you motivation is simply saving the Earth but as you progress the stakes and magnitude of what you are doing become realised and then it becomes really engaging.
Just on here asking where your nintendo direct mini reaction is?
We didn't feel there was a need to react to it, and we've also been running a marathon all week. We discuss it on this week's podcast. -Bloodworth
@@EasyAllies awh thats disappointung. I thought there was quite a few great things to react to. And im always excited to see your reactions. I guess next time then. Thanks bloodworth
It's finally here!!!
DOOM 😍
But I guess this means there will not be a Nioh 2 review from you guys?
Easy Allies Reviews > IGN Reviews
I've honestly never been let down by any Doom game, and very few other titles including God of War and Bioshock. Sure hope that Half-Life 3 is also damn good... whenever it's finally out, lol.
Best fps ever made
Ben I enjoyed your nightmare stream the other night. Any plans on doing any more?
Excellent!!
Now review Half Life: Alyx
It's literally next on his list. -Bloodworth
Minigun un doom 2016: 9 barrels
Minigun in eternal: 12 barrels
Me: Progress
So the new CD from Mick Gordon comes with a free game on it. Nice.
Then they try and mask their bad play with "I just don't like the tone of this game compared to 2016" no you just suck and aren't willing to get better, despite being paid to play video games.
soliduswasright agreed, it’s ok to be bad at it too, but to blame it on “bad game design” is just not accurate here. As they say: “Git Gud!”
Very good?
Yes
Game of the Year?
It's there but it's a bit soon.
Shotgun?
Loaded
Marauder?
Fuck
Hotel?
Fuck Trivago.
ITS UP
This game is a masterpiece, the pinnacle of the FPS genre
