I'll always campaign for RGG Studio! They make some amazing games, and well worth playing for anyone who wants a change of pace from the usual set of Triple A games that come out regularly!
Great review but I still prefer the Japanese audio makes it much more realistic for me I'm also a fan of Japanese voice actors in anime series but it's good that people have options now in what language you wanna play so it works for everybody
for me i respect japanese VA but as an American English speaker, a lot of the nuances get lost in translation so even if i have subtitles, the tone and intention of how a line is delivered gets lost on me and goes over my head how it was meant to be delivered. where as an english va ill relate to it more. although a lot of times the english va can be bad so i will fall back on original japanese dub.
Me too. As an Asian, I speak fluent Japanese. So, I don't see why the reviewer would want me to play a game with a Japanese setting and Japanese characters using an English dub first. Good for those who want the option I guess.
yeah these yakuza and judgment games have that fix. sad that the team that made sleeping dogs didn't make a new sequel maybe with the female lead or something.
Judgment is one of my favorite video games in recent memory and I especially love the English dub. I thought Greg Chun sounded perfect as Takayuki -- he nailed that combination of cool and heroic in his portrayal. No offense to Takuya Kimura, but I was really surprised at how deep and guttural his voice sounded.
One thing that caught me off guard playing this, is that while I was progressing his skills through SP, they also seemed to match it with the narrative in the story. It almost seemed like he was becoming a better fighter over the course of the game. I literally cheered for him at the end.
That's one of the beauties of well designed games with RPG-style progression systems: The players grow alongside the characters throughout the story. To an even greater extent, Yakuza exemplifies this across 7 games with Kiryu! I personally like seeing Yagami cheer when he wins his drone races. He looks so happy!
This is the best game I've played so far, this year. The only negative thing about it is the extreme hand-holding. The game is absolutely hellbent on making sure that EVERYONE understands exactly what's going on at all times. And to achieve this, characters will go over the same details again and again, no matter how obvious they may seem or how recently they happened in the story. Let's say a case starts with you tailing a character. OK. The next step is: "Right. I've just tailed a suspect to a Poppo store. Let's review the case so far!". Then you spy on the suspect through a window with your drone: "All right. I recently tailed a suspect to a Poppo store, and now I've spied on the same suspect through a window with my drone. Are you with me so far?". For fuck's sake, YES, we are!!!!!! Oh, and the drone time attacks are hell on Earth. Especially Pipeline.
Glad to see you’re enjoying the game! I’m running into a similar problem with hand holding with Fire Emblem Three Houses. There’s so many tutorials in that game!
4:35 I think Driver: San Francisco does a decent job with tailing missions. Even when you're following somebody, they drive fast enough that it's not boring.
Backlog Battle Honestly DSF is worth a repeat playthrough from time to time. It's just such a VIDEO GAME, yet it also manages to have a decent buddy-cop plot and a surreal premise on top of that.
@J H I'm just being realistic. I spend a lot of time reviewing very long games, so this doesn't leave a lot of time to go back and play older games. That, plus responsibilities with the family, this all adds up to time I don't have. Believe me when I say that I didn’t even expect me to be open to the idea of watching let’s plays, but such is life! It's why my channel is called Backlog Battle, after all ;)
Its become one of my all-time favourites after playing some Yakuza games (0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2) tbh I really loved how the dynamic intros only got so much better as the games went on, more games should try it!! :D
So excited to get Judgment, pre ordered the physical copy of the game and i can say that RGG Studios have done it again on making an amazing game and are the only company/studio that give out great games, and I'm proud to support them as a fan.
Why they cast Takuya Kimura? He played similar roles in TV show called Hero which became a phenomenon in Japan. And his character in that show is called Kuryu Kohei, Yakuza had Kiryu Kazama. I played Judgment coz of Kimura and I could say, this is also a loose spinoff of that TV show too. For a Kimura fan like me, this game is an absolute treat! If you like Kimura in Judgment, I recommend you to watch Hero. Looking forward to Lost Judgment next month!
I love detective games. So happy that my favorite studio decided to make game in that theme. So far my best game from them. I would love to see sequel with some kind of management game (maybe detective and security agency with employees obtained through quests? )
How about the comedy? It's not a deal breaker or anything, but yakuza games made me legitimately LOL sometimes. Like kiryu getting his pictures taken in kiwami 2.
You can get cosmetic items to display like bonsai trees and other stuff from the pawn shop, as well as get songs you can play in there. That’s as much upgrading as you’ll be able to do.
Great review and I agree about the dub, Greg Chun especially. I’d say to change the background music time to time though it’s grating for a Long period of time and doesn’t give a good idea of the variety of music in the game.
Thanks for the feedback! Will keep that in mind for future videos! That said, the background music is from the game itself, just to be clear, and it does go on longer than the video. In fact the music I use in my videos are all from the games I review.
Nice review.. My only gripe is that you make RGG studios sound like a separate entity of SEGA. Credit where credit is due, SEGA did more than publish the game.
Thanks for the feedback! I value comments like this because I know that my videos don’t always hit the mark, and so these are very valuable to me. Thank you! My intention isn’t certainly to divert attention away from the work of Sega, but to focus on some of the bigger questions both long time fans of Yakuza have as well as newcomers, in particular, what will feel new in Judgment. To give you an example, while reviewing the game, some reviewers I’ve spoken to complained that the combat was too hard. I’ve also remembered speaking to fans who have played Yakuza 6 and Kiwami 2 who complained about the enemy’s excessive blocking. The combination of these two, along with my personal experiences with Judgment, became the premise of one of the parts in my review talking about the combat. I know that the western branches of SEGA work really hard with crafting an amazing localization and have done so for the past 3 years, but again, the newest challenge for the Yakuza team (note: a different team worked on FOTNS:LP) was an English dub. SEGA was never shy as to why they took this challenge, of not only making subtitles for the original Japanese spoken dialogue, but crafting an all new spoken dialogue - but still true to the original - in English. I felt that while many of us (myself included) will play the game in Japanese and enjoy the already incredible work the localization team does, I felt that the English dub needed to be highlighted. What I forgot to mention, as you pointed out, is to praise the team’s efforts in a more pointed fashion. Anyway, I hope what I said makes sense and that you tell your friends about the video. I really do mean it when I say that I take feedback like these and help me improve on my next videos, and I hope this comment shows how appreciative I am of that!
Playing the game right now and having lots of fun. Great review! Personally I love the Japanese acting, but I really think it's about which you're used to. For example most people think the english dub of the anime Cowboy Bebop is better than the Japanese voice acting, but I disagree because I'm used to the Japanese version. In the other direction I prefer the English dubs of Persona games over the Japanese versions because that's how I first experienced it. I'm glad the game has a great dub though as many people refuse to play games entirely subtitled and it would suck if they were stuck with a bad dub.
Thanks for watching! Atlus' dub game has been improving immensely over the course of the past several years, so it's always something I check out when I play their (and SEGA's) games! I know the Japanese voice overs will be good anyhow, which is why I went with the English dubs!
@@BacklogBattle Hopefully they'll be improved on in a future sequel, which I definitely see happening considering Judgment's overall positive reception.
The audio mix for the background music in your video is loud and it's hard to understand what you are saying; otherwise, nice review. I just beat Judgment and it's now among my favorites
I just beat like a dragon a few days ago (absolutely loved it ! The goofiness and charm of the game and ichiban completely won me over!) Anyway I started on judgement. I’m about 11 hours in and near beginning of chapter 5 and I’m finding judgement to be insanely boring. I’m finding the protagonist to be boring so far and I’m not even captured by the story yet....anyway should I keep going if I’m really bored 11 hours in and chapter 5)
Personally, I wouldn’t force myself to keep playing. If you haven’t found enjoyment in the game after so long, you might just resent playing it if you keep going. That said, maybe it’s just not the right time? I find that for certain games, I gotta be in the right mood to play them. Yagami isn’t like Ichiban at all, so I definitely understand where you’re coming from with this.
@@IvanRubin I would wait for a few weeks, Judgment is a solid game. As mentioned already you need to be in the right mood to play it (e.g. I've just finished Judgement today and tried to start Yakuza 0 tonight but I feel I need to wait a few days for me to really enjoy it). I've completed both games and I would say that although very different, both were enjoyable in different ways; Like a Dragon had the fun old school RPG style gameplay with summoning as well as Ichiban's humour/personality, while Judgment is more about detective/suspense and more action-based gameplay similar to the rest of the Yakuza series. I personally loved the storyline of Judgment, it felt like watching a movie that was 10+ hours long and you bet I'll be playing Lost Judgment on release.

That tailing mission was alright. Someone else here recommended I play MGSV for the tailing missions and while I’ve been a fan of the series since the MSX, I don’t necessarily think the series does a good job of that kind of mission either.
@@BacklogBattle It's a hard mission to really make fully fun. But if anything, MGS4 it isn't an insta fail if seen. Still, this mission type has a ways to go to be good lol.
honestly I hated the combat for most of the game, only liking it in the beginning before it wore way too thin, and at the end where I had enough skills unlocked that I could actually do things. the two styles are not distinct enough from each other, essentially just boiling down to kung fu light anf kung fu heavy. mortal wounds are just a pain in the ass that cost too damn much to fix, the street gang that reoccurs is just a pain that inflicts said wounds with no real reward for fighting them, or at least not one that matters in any way if you don't think drone racing is the best thing ever. I disliked most of the minigames, and I hated the friend system. I much prefer the one from Yakuza 0, where there were far fewer friends that all had actual interesting things to do with them. not 50 mostly uninteresting friends that lock most of the side quests behinds a magical wall. But the story is mostly pretty damn good... at least there's that
@@BacklogBattle I really did... at first then less and less so as it went on. frankly, I think it would have made for an actually excellent netflix series or the like. and I think that a person who wants to get into the Yakuza games would find this game to be a very good starting point, just not so much the other way around. to me it felt like a Yakuza game were the game part was less fun. though Judgement is very definitely more approachable than jumping in head first into Yakuza
Not every NPC is fully English dubbed because you know $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 they don't have enough to hire more English voice overs it should be obvious.
Backlog Battle I think having finished the game I can’t imagine hearing these characters’ voices in another language. I fell in love with them, but I typed that comment before I saw the whole video so I understand the way I feel is how you feel in reverse.
Thank you for clarifying! For me, I can play games with either voice acting. But for this game specifically, I felt it was important to cover the English dub because that’s how many first time RGG fans would experience the game. I tried to be very careful not to disparage one over the other, only that if there was a noticeable drop in quality on either that was present that I’d present it. Thankfully, both voice tracks are great!
Hmm I have quite mixed feelings about Jugdement. I loved the story and characters, and the combat was fun too. But it's the only title from Ryu Ga Gotoku where I didn't find the side content pr mini games fun 😅 It's still a game I would recommend to fan of the Yakuza franchise but it's not my favorite entry 🤷🏻♀️
So awesome to see another great adventure comin out of the studio!

honestly I hated the combat for most of the game, only liking it in the beginning before it wore way too thin, and at the end where I had enough skills unlocked that I could actually do things. the two styles are not distinct enough from each other, essentially just boiling down to kung fu light anf kung fu heavy. mortal wounds are just a pain in the ass that cost too damn much to fix, the street gang that reoccurs is just a pain that inflicts said wounds with no real reward for fighting them, or at least not one that matters in any way if you don't think drone racing is the best thing ever. I disliked most of the minigames, and I hated the friend system. I much prefer the one from Yakuza 0, where there were far fewer friends that all had actual interesting things to do with them. not 50 mostly uninteresting friends that lock most of the side quests behinds a magical wall. But the story is mostly pretty damn good... at least there's that
From what I’ve read, it just sounds like you just didn’t like your experience with Judgment.
@@BacklogBattle I really did... at first then less and less so as it went on. frankly, I think it would have made for an actually excellent netflix series or the like. and I think that a person who wants to get into the Yakuza games would find this game to be a very good starting point, just not so much the other way around. to me it felt like a Yakuza game were the game part was less fun. though Judgement is very definitely more approachable than jumping in head first into Yakuza
so is it better than the later yakuza games
Yep!
Not every NPC is fully English dubbed because you know $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 they don't have enough to hire more English voice overs it should be obvious.
DoomFry
I mean - it’s set in Japan so it should kind of add to the charm right!
Really? I can't believe you preferred the English acting instead of Kimura's work...
You played with... English vocals?!
Why not?
Backlog Battle
I think having finished the game I can’t imagine hearing these characters’ voices in another language.

Great review!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
