It blows my mind that the “most trusted brand” would be PSA. In my experience, they have been one of the most inconsistent graders out there and not without there share of scandals. They are like the boyfriend that keeps treating a girl badly but she keeps going back to him.
People are only saying it because the resale value is the highest. Money is what pulls people in. PSA’s grading scale makes the most sense too, you get a ten or you don’t. Having the two 10 levels at bgs is just ridiculous. It’s almost too accurate and people aren’t looking for that. The psa 10 is the top at psa, how could bgs 9.5 equal a psa 10 when there are two grades above the bgs 9.5?
@@pete5691 because most those PSA 10's really are not perfect Gem Mint 10's. PSA can explain why they make 8.5's but not 9.5's is what is ridiculous. But I agree a 15 year old me is blind to the details why and only wants 10's. The 50 year old me appreciates the truer and finer details and as to why.
@@acecampbell8594 But thats just how they decided it and the majority of people agree. If the card reaches a certain threshold it get’s a 10 if not it gets a 9. It’s as simple as that. They have a minimum standard, they don’t say perfect which is why I think the bgs black label earns a higher price on vs psa 10’s but is that what we want, cards judged so minutely that almost no 10’s exist? To each his own and I like accuracy but I guess my tolerance for accuracy my be a bit more forgiving than others.
They are known to do population control. I’ve seen cross over cards from psa 9 to becket 10 black Label. People has put them on blast for that and they now return cards and not grade them to control the pop. I don’t trust psa at all.
Scottie this is your BEST video ever. So much statistics and data packed into this video. Probably not the happiest video, since you are a BGS collector, but the effort and research you put into this video is AMAZING.
I personally like BGS the best because of the subgrades and I like their slab design the most. I look at BGS 9.5s as PSA 10s in terms of card quality. I do think their struggles come from tougher grading and more expensive grading costs, which leads people to consider the other grading companies. Why submit a card knowing it won't 10 over here when it has a higher chance to get a 10 at PSA or another company?
I prefer BGS for sub grades and protection (best holder). I also like SGC for consistency and turnaround (holders ain’t great). I only like PSA for turnaround. I truly feel BGS will rise again!!!
It’s so sad how we’ve gotten so far from what’s important which is the accuracy of the grade. Everyone just wants a 10 grade these days without earning it
I don’t just want a 10 grade, I just want them to be consistent. My cards graded over ten years ago have much more lenient grades than all my current cards graded.
If they start grading them accurately there would be very few real 10s. That would lead to people sending cards to other grading companies out of anger towards BGS. Grading is a total scam. And no card can be a perfect 10. It's impossible unless it's graded right after printing.
@@pete5691 right I had no idea dudes are getting easy 10's from bgs whats their secret!? or at any of the top 4 companies my last 3 subs I got one 10, I must be out of the loop!
Great breakdown. Late to the convo, but agree that BGS maintaining a different gem scale hurts them. The BGS 10 is valuable but it is so hard to get, people would rather just get a PSA 10.
Something that I think is really huge and no one talks about it is the fact that PSA is the only company that will hold your cards hostage until you pay them the upcharge Ransom that they've decided you should pay. That's huge! That's one of the reasons why I don't want a grade my cards because I don't know if I can afford the up charges on. And they don't send your cards back to you until you pay them.
so you would rather pay up front than keep the money in your bank acct until they tell you it is time to pay? I think you are in the minority there...I would always choose to keep money in my possession for as long as I can...the upcharge thing is a whole different topic, but in regards to that, i don't mind getting upcharged if my card is worth a lot more than the submission rate I sent it in at...insurance is higher to ship back more expensive cards, etc, so that is why cards get upcharged
@@gradedcards5516 I don't think they should do it. The other companies don't do it, at least not as frequently. I understand why they do it, their service makes your stuff more valuable, I get it, but they make more than enough money that they could easily charged a flat rate and still make a ton.
@@gradedcards5516 and the bigger issue is the fact that you can't just say forget it and have them send you your card back if it's way too far out of your price range.
My strategy has always been to collect PC cards in all three major slabs. That hasn't changed, and now I'm just picking up BGS slabs much cheaper. It's frustrating that new collectors don't understand the 9.5 scale for BGS when it's been that way for 25 years, but they do have issues to fix and it's nice to see them actually seem like they care lately. I think they can bounce back too
It’s human nature to want a 10 over a 9.5. Over time, as more people bought the tens over the 9.5’s, paying more if they had to, it became a self fulfilling prophecy. Bgs will never catch psa, neither will anyone else for that matter. I do prefer bgs labels for autos.
Buy the card not the holder. Trust in BGS and SGC grades and if you can get a card for a lot cheaper than PSA then that’s what I would buy. PSA is overpriced for their inconsistent 10’s. Sometimes it’s very difficult to get a 10 from PSA and other times you will get a bad OC or bad corner card get a 10. IMO there are some good deals in BGS slabs right now.
Great video Scottie B. I agree with alot of your points. Since I got in to the "slab" game in late 90's I have always preferred and truly believe Beckett has the best slabs. They feel museum like quality over the flimsy plastic companies. The sub grades and Black label are the two coolest things in the hobby imo. However the younger gen doesn't seem to care and PSA has clearly taken over the top spot since early 2000's slight lead. Either Beckett doesn't care (Like Apple - doing their own thing) or they need to get with the times. Like you I am puling for a Beckett come back!
I don’t get the desire for psa 10 other that it feels like your card is better than it is. A psa 10 is the same as bgs 9.5,10, and black label (only .4% of cards qualify). How do you know which card quality you have in a psa 10? More people submit to psa as they know they are more likely to get a 10 vs bgs.
Great video!! I could write a book to reply however I will leave this as a comment and a thought. As a long time Pre Pandemic Collector (PPC) a lot of people who entered the hobby post 2018 were guided to grade their cards. This caused a tremendous back log with all companies. For those that have been doing this a long time, everyone can share a grading horror story. My question is why grade? If you look at all the major companies, they independently hire their own employees and put them through their own training. There has been a major increase in new hires for card graders (and turnover) and a vast majority of these graders have very limited experience with cards. Point being is there is no standardization!! There needs to be an actual, formal card grading school, academy (call it what you will) that can formally train an individual to grade everything from vintage, modern, sport, non-sport, etc in order to establish a standard across all formats. Once you pass this curriculum you can then be eligible to apply to whichever grading company you prefer. Otherwise, the only value I really see in any of these companies right now is to verify if a card is authentic (not trimmed, etc.). We are placing too much emphasis on the grade and taking away from a collectors individual decision to judge a card for themselves!!
Why would anybody think more options is worst? Everybody loves to complain about PSA tens that aren't really tens and it's obvious, so bgs and all of their options is a much better choice...
I am a long time collector. Back when it was just Beckett and PSA I only dealt with Beckett. They were known for having a much stricter grading scale than PSA. Back then a BGS 9.5 card was always worth more than a PSA 10 of the same player. I still believe they are much stricter than PSA. I've seen PSA 10s with dinged corners, off center and rough edges on many occasions. I believe that is part of why PSA has been so successful. Their grading standards are very inconsistent and favor the customer that has sent in their cards. I do purchase PSA graded cards occasionally, but I always carefully inspect them before hand. I'm not saying all PSA cards are graded better than they should be. I do agree that Beckett needs to get their act together. I don't have any SGC graded cards at this time, but I am very impressed with what they have been doing.
I still remember the time when the BGS "True Gem" was the KING of Bowman Chrome Prospect Autos...Bowman Chrome in PSA holders weren't as highly sought after and thus weren't as valuable. Mind you, this wasn't too long ago...maybe 3-5 years. For my PC and higher value cards, it's BGS all the way. For cards I might sell right away I'll go PSA... if I don't think it will PSA 10 I'll go to BGS or SGC...depends on how fast I need it back.
I like most collectors grew up with Beckett price guides and have a favorable opinion on the brand as a whole. I just don't like the size and clunky shape of the slabs. Considering that with the bad press just makes me like them a lot less. Psa grading is so inconsistent. I really like Sgc for vintage and Csg for everything else. The Sgc tuxedo looks awesome on older cards and Csg slabs are so clear and sturdy. Also Sgc and Csg grading is always within a point of what I would expect. Psa has given me some serious head scratchers.
BGS is problem is that they've been silent during this entire rise of sports cards and falls sports cards related to grading. They're just sitting there doing nothing. Saying nothing and are slowly becoming nothing. They just need to get out there.
CSG was actually a group of people from BGS that went over to start that product for that brand. I would say, I REALLY like BGS for my PC: great look, protects the cards well, and affordable. I do not like SOME PSA cards for PC because, especially the older cards, can rattle around. That said, I’ve received some PSA cards that have a sleeve inside the case. That said the cases still feel cheap and have zero UV protection, so they just end up sitting in a box in a safe, in a climate controlled space. Just my take…
The one thing I would add is that “IF” BGS wanted to update their standards, I would say, get rid of the “overall” grade #, leave it subgrades, and then have Black Label, Pristine, Gem Mint+, Gem Mint, and Min Gem Mint, which reflects an overall grade of 10, 9.75, 9.5, 9.375 (3x 9.5, 1x 9).
@@pete5691 PSA is number one because they have been around by far the longest and have by far the most inventory. They have 7.5's, 8.5's for example but for no plausible reason don't have an 9.5 Regardless they are the kings of the industry. It's now a comfort in name. Like ordering a Coke or a Shasta. Even if you know the Coke will cost more and might not be better you do it lol
Good video, I don’t think you touched in it, but BGS’s website and pricing structure is very, very confusing and cumbersome. SGC and PSA, their pricing and website functionality are much better. BGS just had so much work in front of them, I don’t see how they can recover anytime soon.
Yes this is their biggest issue. Their website sucks and they are dying and will continue to do so. Their customer service is awful and good luck when they regrsde your reholder submission!!! They are theifs that dont stand behind the grade on their label.
I have a card that I want the autograph authenticated/graded more than the card itself. Which do you think would be the best company to send to? Edit: This is for my personal collection and probably not to be resold. Raw card with autograph was bought for $20.
for your PC? Easy Beckett. But pay for the auto grade and sub grade options for a few dollars more. Love how Beckett uses the two flips for this. Plus no slab will protect your PC better than theirs. Some PSA auto flip's won't even show the card brand nor year - will authenticate the Auto but the first words are "Trading Card" Yuck. Hard pass! Although you can get PSA to grade it and label it correctly too.
BGS CEO hat on: 1. Update Grading scale: 10 Pristine, 10 Gem Mint, 9.5 Mint+, 9 Mint .... 2. Reslab any currently graded BGS card to the new grading scale for free or a small charge 3. Keep subgrades and really lean into that. Do media and social media around then and why it is good to know where the grade or lower grade came from 4. Look into buying TAG and then really lean into their computer grading tech. People complain about grading and human error etc. Lean into taking that out. Plus their etched slabs look great. 5. If not pt 4 then at least get label look uniformed as you mentioned. 6. Then same as you mentioned hire some social media managers and get that going 7. Also might take a lose of this but lower prices and turn around times down significantly to hopefully flood the market with new and improved BGS slabs. Maybe something like Bulk $10 with a 60 Day, Bulk $12 with a 45 Day, Bulk $15 with a 30 Day etc etc
Absolutely ridiculous to reslab any card for $5 especially when they will regrade every card they get. Did you guys not know they regrade the cards you send even if its a recase?
I got most of my stuff graded by PSA was a big fan trash. No 9.5 they have made so many mistakes on my cards. I have recently switched over to BGS which I always wanted to do. One mistake they notified me and rectified the issue. I might send lower grade stuff to PSA or things that may sell higher if in a PSA case.
You should do some research on FCG (Forensic Card Grading) and the dent they're making in the hobby. They have the potential to make huge waves in the hobby with their model. They are doing some great things and they do have some cons (as all do) but they have way more pros. It would be worth your time and maybe do a video on it.
I don't like how there are different levels of gem mint. Is it a 10 gold, 10. Seems sketchy to me. I'll stick with PSA, they aren't perfect but seem to be the most consistent over the years despite not having a 9.5. I prefer the PSA label as well to the others. Sometimes I buy SGC slabbed cards but only because they tend to be a bit cheaper and some look better in the black border.
In all seriousness, have you considered offering to run BGS grading? This video clearly shows that they are in need of new leadership and your proposals to overhaul their service and maximize their brand are spot on. Also, bring back the (physical) Beckett price guide. A cheap but accurate price guide magazine for cards in raw / 9 / 10 grades would be something I would subscribe to in a heartbeat. Maybe send it out for free if you have a Beckett Collector's Club membership or something like that.
Back in the day I remember being able to go into a bookstore and buy a Beckett price guide and now There's so many other ways to find value in a card they just don't have the dominance they once had and they need to become more service oriented to keep up or continue to fall behind but I am partial to them and would like to see them succeed still
While i'm still a fan of the BGS slab, and the consistency in which they grade... they completely dug themselves a big hole. It boggles my mind; some of these gaps in value for the same card. BGS needs a game plan for a comeback, and i think it's about growing your customer base. Making it fun to submit/grade cards. Not a headache. Not horrible customer service, and long turn around times. A website that properly functions. Sounds lame, but maybe try a subscription service for like 19.99 a month , and you can submit 3 cards per month (Along with some higher tiers). This would help manage your inflow of cards your receiving. Plus more customers getting cards back faster.
I was actually the person that sent in those 2015 Silver Prizm LeBron’s to BGS (through a group submitter). I ended up trading one to a guy in New York and he promptly sold it to a guy in China. So the fake slab came out of there. Also, BGS has gone downhill since Jeromy Murray took over as president of Beckett Collectibles.
Just got a 7 from BGS and it was a silver label. I think they might have gone away with the paper label, unless they saved it for cards below a 5 or 6.
Grading scale should be one, two and 3 not 1 thru 10. It's so much easier and everyone sending cards in can do so with confidence that it's likely going to come back a "Scottie b 3". We don't need 1 thru 10, it's hurting the hobby. Cracking cases wouldn't be necessary anymore. Give it some thought and make a pros vs cons list for me. Love your videos brother, keep up the good work.
bgs previous management were a bunch of boomers. they overplayed their hands, refused to upgrade and adapt to the times, C/S was non existent. It seems new management is at least trying which is nice to see. Ive always liked their labels the best and appreciated the sub grades. I believe they can rebound, there are enough loyal customers for it to happen, as long as they treat us right
@@acecampbell8594 ha been a while since i watched it but if my memory is correct basically they said a slab change in the works and they are still trying to remain competitive, they read and watch youtube feedback and trying to address all the issues mentioned,
I really hope BGS once again gains favor with collectors. I love how their slabs look and personally like the sub-grades. Issue is that if going forward, they change a BGS 9.5 to a 10, it may have a bad impact on all the 9.5’s out there in the open market (and we know there is a shit load of them). People will not focus on the fact that a recently-graded BGS 10 and a previously-graded 9.5 are both considered “gem mint.” They will primarily look at the primary grade and distinguish them as “different.” Not an easy fix.
UPDATE ON BGS CHANGES: BGS Sent an email out, they said based on feedback they will NOT be making any changes at this time. See email below: Dear loyal Beckett customers,
We are grateful for the feedback and insights you have shared with us over the past 48 hours. Your passion for our brand and hobby is truly remarkable, and we appreciate your support.
After listening carefully to the feedback you all shared, we have decided not to make any changes to our grading scale at this time. We will keep you updated with an official announcement later next week regarding improvements to our grading scale. We thank you for your continued trust and loyalty to Beckett. Please continue to share your thoughts and feedback directly with us.
@Graded Cards long wait times, high prices, inconsistent grading are among the turnoff for any grading company. I wish sgc would do a bar scan for pop counts.
I’ve been back into cards for about two years now and I just sent my first ever PC grading order out and I sent it to BGS. The abysmal customer service I’ve experienced so far has confirmed it may just be my last one to them too
$40 for standard grading and return shipping of $25 (their cheapest return shipping service) is beyond ridiculous. $25 return shipping for ONE CARD? That's where they lose me completely. They need to drop those grading prices at least 1/2.
I love BGS. Their slabs look the best. It’s 20 bucks for no sub grades. Perfect for my pc. And if you have a valuable card you can have subs and re sell
My issue with Beckett is they have three different grading brands, all with different meanings. A BCCG 10 will almost never be a BGS 10, and a BGS 10 will never be a BVG 10. Such inconsistency makes their scores almost useless.
Funny your issue is my preference lol. BGS & BVG only now as BCCG has went away. BVG just means Vintage anything older than 1980. So no a BVG can't be a BGS lol. The BCCG which I did not like was just a quicker cheaper eyeball slab. Ironically that cheap slab is equal to the completion's best slabs. Smh
I stopped using Beckett years ago because their customer service was absolutely terrible, and they used to offer a turnaround time “guarantee” which they did not honor for me when they were way past the due date on a large order. I would have given them another chance but things only seemed to get worse from there based on reports I heard from other people. PSA and SGC have definitely earned their spots at the top of the market for card grading.
They’re shipping service FedEX - supposedly - lost a 1990 Rookie autographed card (I got it signed in person) when they “sent it back!” I had it since I was a child when I got it signed & this is my first time ever getting a card graded & that’s my experience! Since I sent it off I had a feeling that “something” might happen with the card. I could never get them to send any insurance money since they wud never get in touch, until I threatened with the cops 👮🏼♂️!
and i just sent my 1st ever order of cards off to be graded...to Beckett hahaha...i just remember them being the best as a kid, the scale is per card and no membership required (i wasn't ready to pay $99 to PSA for just a 10 card lot) Why didn't i see this video a week ago haha
I don't know what happened. I stepped away from collecting in 2015 and returned last year. I was shocked to see PSA had overtaken BGS. BGS was always the big dog and it wasn't even close.
Throwing my 2 cents into the conversation. I have never been a believer in PSA. I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands, of cards that are graded a 10 that are so off centered it’s pathetic. I’m also tired of hearing people bragging about PSA and only trust them, I think they are corrupt personally. I don’t know what it is going on with BGS but it sure seems everyone hates them. CSG to me seems like they are the grader to start pursuing. I’ve read numerous articles about them, just go to their website and read about the the individuals bios in charge of the grading process. SGC has really turned things around in the last couple of years too. I’m really buying only SGC and CSG cards from now on, then BGS and I’m done with PSA. PSA just comes across as too slimy and it doesn’t hurt when you have a select few RUclips channels with their penis’s down PSA’s throat. (SCI and MJo, that Goldin fool), at least 2 out of those 3 are probably gay. My choices from now on: CSG, SGC, BGS and KSA out of Canada because I’m into hockey cards too. CSG and KSA are probably the top coin graders in the world too, so how could you go wrong with them.. time to drain the swamp as they say, PSA better be on the lookout tower, their time as the go to company hopefully comes to an end.
The entire grading company topic is kinda beat to me.... PSA is my holder of choice since the early-mid 90's but i hope all grading companies slabs rise in stability in terms of high grade prices.... BGS is stuck in the 9.5 Bullshit syndrome..... BGS is the choice for non-PSA 10 candidates as well as SGC. These 3 companies are the only 3 I would ever own. 95% PSA~ 4% BGS and 1% SGC make up my collection roughly.
With PSA it's a crapshoot on which grade gets the card & what mood they're in at the time. No subgrades, no details &/or explanation, no accountability.
I've seen cards that seem to be perfect w a PSA 9. I've seen a card both off center AND w a crimped corner graded PSA 9. I've also seen a card w 2 dinged corners graded PSA 10. BGS is not perfect by any means but at least the give an indication of how they come up with their grade.
For my PC I prefer BGS. If it's something that I'm looking at selling &/or flipping I'll go PSA. This is mainly because (unfortunately) in this industry perception is 90% and PSA has the optical illusion (imo) of being the superior company.
I have a large submission of cards that I was intending to send to BSG but after this video I might spread the love a little to other grading companies.
I was considering them as well but I would stay away from them if I were you. Follow them on Instagram, and checkout their most recent post with their pricing special and read the comments. So many people complaining about not knowing the status of their cards, and long turnaround times. A couple people saying BGS won’t charge them and send their cards back for some strange reason. They’re response was “Our turnaround times are only an estimate”. IMO that’s completely unacceptable considering every other major company has scaled up and exceeding turnaround times at this point.
I use to really like BGS, now I don't even look for their slabs anymore. They dropped the ball on their BVG serial number system, not all the slab serial numbers are not even in their system and when you ask them about a certain card serial number not on their books they tell you to send the slab to them to be authenticated and re slabed.
@@acecampbell8594 I found out after buying one of these BVG cards. Number would not pull up in the system and that's what I was told by them thru email. You don't know if cards are authentic or not because they could be just left out of their system. Only way to fix it is send the card to them for reslab and you may even have to pay for it
BGS needs to add anti-counterfeit measures ASAP. PSA has the color changing silver logos, UV light logo on the back, light blue fugitive ink lines, barcode and QR code. BGS has nothing. I'm sure the BGS counterfeiters have figured out how to add a period after the "PAT" and perforate the flips by now.
It's not too late for BGS top switch to 10. All they need to do is run a campaign that they're gonna change, announce they want parity in the grading community/industry, and they'll switch people's 9.5 slabs to 10 for $5 or whatever. It hurts to see BGS stubbornly sinking since I have some nice cards in BGS (i.e. Jordan RC).
Good idea on the $5 label flips but there is also something cool about the only one that does it a certain way. I remember when SGC stop their old (78) grades to copy PSA (and now CGC). Standing their own ground on their process is admirable. And being the only company explaining how I get my grade with subgrades is the best and should be the game changer... but hey getting an 8 and having absolutely no idea why is fun for some
Great video Scottie B! I like psa and bgs for cards, sgc is trash in my opinion. The slabs are cheap and ugly, but most importantly, they have no consistency with grading. I hope bgs comes back strong and gets back to being #1 or 2 with psa
It's too bad that BSG is having such issues. I actually like the look of their slabs over the generic looking PSA. PSA isn't perfect either, but they certainly have a corner on things right now. I would love it if grading became less important to people. A card can have great eye-appeal without being slabbed with a 10 in the corner.
I'm a first-time BGS customer. What a terrible experience. I won't use them again. I recently sent an order in to BGS. I was turned on by their pricing at the end of 2022. I got really sick and didn't finish my submission until January 6th, so the price per card doubled from $50 to $100 per card for Express. I sent an inquiry about honoring the discount and they responded via e-mail, "I apologize as we could not honor the discount. There is a validity on the order and it should be tagged as received on or before 01-01-2023. You can check the site from time to time for new offers." 3 days later, they introduced the new service levels. When I saw that, I e-mailed them and asked, "I submitted my order in between the old and new pricing window. Will you honor the new pricing levels for me since you didn't receive the cards yet?" I'd be willing to pay an extra $40 per card to get the cards back faster. Their response, "Submission will be invoiced or processed in reference to its submission. We could not make changes on the service level/turnaround time." Now I see that they have a new submission form that will make tracking the progress of the grading more accurate. My package arrived on the 13th and there's no evidence of my order in their system, only in my e-mail archive. I wanted either some money back or I'd pay more for the new Priority level, but I'm one of the lucky people who got stuck with the worst service level of the year. Terrible short-term thinking.
I see crooked, off-center PSA 10s everyday. They definitely hand out 10's easily, which is why people have chosen them. That being said, their slabs allow the card to move sometimes and their grading transparency sucks. If you truly have a nice card, that BGD black label is sweeeeeeeeeet. I think BGS wants to be the premium grading company, but the market has favored the more lenient grading of PSA.
Bgs is going no where unless csg buys them, Bgs still has a niche with bowman chromes and high end they still have a fan base I think their biggest problem is pricing, the submission form. They just need to give a shit n care more.. Csg n Psa have best security on there slabs you can take picture of QR takes you to site n to card.. wink wink bgs people! pullin for ya's
BGS has too many problems. 1) Outdated cases and labels. Labels are easy to change, but if they change cases they piss off their fans. 2) They dont give out 10s. Sure a 9.5 is the same as a psa 10, except people new to buying graded cards dont know that. 3) Poor and inconsistent grading and quality control. I sold a bgs 9.5 base prizm today that had blotches and marks all over the surface and it got a 9.5 surface. I mean cmon. Personally I think their cases and labels are ugly so I wont use them, regardless of anything else. I think they are a MUCH MUCH better company than psa is, but that isnt saying much.
Almost a 30 min video, no one can ever say you didn’t properly give BGS attention… if never do another video on BGS again… in your life. I got you SBC 😉. Lol.
It blows my mind that the “most trusted brand” would be PSA. In my experience, they have been one of the most inconsistent graders out there and not without there share of scandals.
They are like the boyfriend that keeps treating a girl badly but she keeps going back to him.
Lol, wow, that's a very accurate way to look at it.

Label.
True
BECAUSE A 10 IS SUPPOSED TO BE SCARCE!! THAT'S WHY.
I prefer BGS for sub grades and protection (best holder). I also like SGC for consistency and turnaround (holders ain’t great). I only like PSA for turnaround. I truly feel BGS will rise again!!!
I meant PSA for resale, sorry for typo…
Completely agree Jonathon
It’s so sad how we’ve gotten so far from what’s important which is the accuracy of the grade. Everyone just wants a 10 grade these days without earning it
I don’t just want a 10 grade, I just want them to be consistent. My cards graded over ten years ago have much more lenient grades than all my current cards graded.
If they start grading them accurately there would be very few real 10s. That would lead to people sending cards to other grading companies out of anger towards BGS. Grading is a total scam. And no card can be a perfect 10. It's impossible unless it's graded right after printing.
bgs is pretty good grader imo they have been accurate
Why would a card not be a ten except right at factory? I haven’t found that tens are given out super easy from any of the companies.
@@pete5691 right I had no idea dudes are getting easy 10's from bgs whats their secret!? or at any of the top 4 companies my last 3 subs I got one 10, I must be out of the loop!
What grader would you use for a Jordan Fleer RC?
Great breakdown. Late to the convo, but agree that BGS maintaining a different gem scale hurts them. The BGS 10 is valuable but it is so hard to get, people would rather just get a PSA 10.
How can you tell if the cards you sent to be graded is the exact one you get back
What about TAG? Any thoughts on them and how they grade?
I live the videos Scottie B. Very happy to have a long video today especially. Thanks for the time putting into the hobby in making these
Something that I think is really huge and no one talks about it is the fact that PSA is the only company that will hold your cards hostage until you pay them the upcharge Ransom that they've decided you should pay.
Why is inner sleeve an advantage? Doesn't it just make it harder to see clearly?
If 10s are commonplace, what does that say about the value?
Good points John. Love the PPC title too lol
Why would anybody think more options is worst? Everybody loves to complain about PSA tens that aren't really tens and it's obvious, so bgs and all of their options is a much better choice...
Dead on
I am a long time collector.
For cards I might sell right away I'll go PSA... if I don't think it will PSA 10 I'll go to BGS or SGC...depends on how fast I need it back.
agree of the PC and flip brands
I like most collectors grew up with Beckett price guides and have a favorable opinion on the brand as a whole. I just don't like the size and clunky shape of the slabs. Considering that with the bad press just makes me like them a lot less. Psa grading is so inconsistent. I really like Sgc for vintage and Csg for everything else. The Sgc tuxedo looks awesome on older cards and Csg slabs are so clear and sturdy. Also Sgc and Csg grading is always within a point of what I would expect. Psa has given me some serious head scratchers.
great video Scottie. Lots of good information.👌🏻
@@Wrosy313 no
Psa has the simplest grading system which is a big reason they are number one. Overcomplicated systems of grading are not what people are looking for.
@@pete5691 PSA is number one because they have been around by far the longest and have by far the most inventory. They have 7.5's, 8.5's for example but for no plausible reason don't have an 9.5
Regardless they are the kings of the industry. It's now a comfort in name. Like ordering a Coke or a Shasta. Even if you know the Coke will cost more and might not be better you do it lol
@Warren Rosychuk Warren I completely agree with you.
How sad is CSG grabbing more grading sub shares than BGS???
This is a really great breakdown, Scott. Thanks for all of your time and effort.
Funny when a PSA 10 has a 50% gem rate on a particular card and the BGS 10 rate is less than 1% yet the multiple is minimal
the sheep don't see it
Great points Scottie
There is nothing this company can do to get my business back. Once they basically ignored the Black Label scandal, they lost my confidence.
Only place i see advertising is through emails 😢💔
BGS CEO hat on:
1. Update Grading scale: 10 Pristine, 10 Gem Mint, 9.5 Mint+, 9 Mint ....
2. Reslab any currently graded BGS card to the new grading scale for free or a small charge
3. Keep subgrades and really lean into that. Do media and social media around then and why it is good to know where the grade or lower grade came from
4. Look into buying TAG and then really lean into their computer grading tech. People complain about grading and human error etc. Lean into taking that out. Plus their etched slabs look great.
5. If not pt 4 then at least get label look uniformed as you mentioned.
6. Then same as you mentioned hire some social media managers and get that going
Hi give 3 rookies to look out for this season and 3 sleeper picks and 3 bounce back players. Happy new year keep up the stella content. ⚾👊
Too late. Their management didnt adapt.
Psa is Inconsistent and y do people still use them stop the use them because it's a easy 10
True Top G channel, absolute best baseball card channel, criminally underrated.
BGS should hire Scottie as CCO, Chief Card Officer.
They're definitely unfollowing after this one, sorry man.
Kidding! Good content, as always.
Just got a 7 from BGS and it was a silver label. I think they might have gone away with the paper label, unless they saved it for cards below a 5 or 6.
I just sent a few things to bgs. I have all my high end cards in bgs. I hope they don't tank.
Ditto
Bro they are so gonna tank lol
Grading scale should be one, two and 3 not 1 thru 10. It's so much easier and everyone sending cards in can do so with confidence that it's likely going to come back a "Scottie b 3". We don't need 1 thru 10, it's hurting the hobby. Cracking cases wouldn't be necessary anymore. Give it some thought and make a pros vs cons list for me. Love your videos brother, keep up the good work.
I'm getting some nice deals on Beckett cards, keep "dying"!
bgs previous management were a bunch of boomers. they overplayed their hands, refused to upgrade and adapt to the times, C/S was non existent.
It seems new management is at least trying which is nice to see. Ive always liked their labels the best and appreciated the sub grades.
I believe they can rebound, there are enough loyal customers for it to happen, as long as they treat us right
bgs just did that interview with Neocards not long ago if anyone interested
Cliff notes?
@@acecampbell8594 ha been a while since i watched it but if my memory is correct basically they said a slab change in the works and they are still trying to remain competitive, they read and watch youtube feedback and trying to address all the issues mentioned,
I agree that BGS is the most respected, but it seems like anytime it's a subgrade issue, it goes down, never up. Can be frustrating for selling cards.
See email below:

We are grateful for the feedback and insights you have shared with us over the past 48 hours. Your passion for our brand and hobby is truly remarkable, and we appreciate your support.
After listening carefully to the feedback you all shared, we have decided not to make any changes to our grading scale at this time. Please continue to share your thoughts and feedback directly with us.

the way of visual, BGS is the most beautiful case, ill still keep collecting it
Just imagine if you will....in 10 years when psa falls into irrelevance, and all those slabbed cards aren't as cool as they once were.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on what could make that happen
@Graded Cards long wait times, high prices, inconsistent grading are among the turnoff for any grading company.
I wish sgc would do a bar scan for pop counts.
Competition with better customer service, pricing model, turn around times, consistent grading, etc.
I’ve been back into cards for about two years now and I just sent my first ever PC grading order out and I sent it to BGS. The abysmal customer service I’ve experienced so far has confirmed it may just be my last one to them too
Easily the worst. Website, standards and customer service is lagging behind the competition.
$40 for standard grading and return shipping of $25 (their cheapest return shipping service) is beyond ridiculous. $25 return shipping for ONE CARD? That's where they lose me completely. They need to drop those grading prices at least 1/2.
BGS is dead. The hole they’ve dug is to big to crawl out of at this point. I don’t feel bad because they 100% did it to themselves.
Bgs as be consistent with 2 week turn around times for at least 6 months
Buy the card not the holder! Grading is subjective and very inconsistent within companies and across companies.
It's because BGS has atrocious unacceptable customer service. Atrocious.
BGS Black Label 10 is held to the highest level at the Dallas card show stand in line for an Hour plus for grading tonight ! 👍🏻😎
those lower BGS slabs are hideous lol
The biggest head scratcher for me is BGS hasn’t changed there slaps in 20+ years. No new security upgrades like PSA has done, nothing.
I think Beckett upgraded first (but only once since beginning) where as PSA has changed labels 3 times. Last one with security/serial
and i just sent my 1st ever order of cards off to be graded...to Beckett hahaha...i just remember them being the best as a kid, the scale is per card and no membership required (i wasn't ready to pay $99 to PSA for just a 10 card lot)
Why didn't i see this video a week ago haha
I don't know what happened. I stepped away from collecting in 2015 and returned last year. I was shocked to see PSA had overtaken BGS. BGS was always the big dog and it wasn't even close.
2023 Best Year For Sports Cards Ever ! 👍🏻😎
BGS dying my ass. Still better than garbage PSA grading.
I have been buying csg graded cards lately. Very good and consistent grading
Nothing out sells a black label 10
Good luck getting one if you don't work for the company lmao
@@kenfreeman5940 Nothing worse than looking at a flawless card.... from every facet ~and seeing it in a PSA 9 holder.....

SGC is About to pass Shady PSA as well, watch Psa will have a 9.5 soon as well
I have a large submission of cards that I was intending to send to BSG but after this video I might spread the love a little to other grading companies.
They dropped the ball on their BVG serial number system, not all the slab serial numbers are not even in their system and when you ask them about a certain card serial number not on their books they tell you to send the slab to them to be authenticated and re slabed.
never heard this about the BVG's
And being the only company explaining how I get my grade with subgrades is the best and should be the game changer... but hey getting an 8 and having absolutely no idea why is fun for some
I’d much rather have a BGS slab than SCG.
13:05 WHAT?????
Great video Scottie B!
I like psa and bgs for cards, sgc is trash in my opinion. The slabs are cheap and ugly, but most importantly, they have no consistency with grading.
I hope bgs comes back strong and gets back to being #1 or 2 with psa
It's too bad that BSG is having such issues. I actually like the look of their slabs over the generic looking PSA. PSA isn't perfect either, but they certainly have a corner on things right now. I would love it if grading became less important to people. A card can have great eye-appeal without being slabbed with a 10 in the corner.
Random comment just to help support the channel.
You can check the site from time to time for new offers."
3 days later, they introduced the new service levels. We could not make changes on the service level/turnaround time."
Now I see that they have a new submission form that will make tracking the progress of the grading more accurate. My package arrived on the 13th and there's no evidence of my order in their system, only in my e-mail archive.
I wanted either some money back or I'd pay more for the new Priority level, but I'm one of the lucky people who got stuck with the worst service level of the year. Terrible short-term thinking.
I will continue to use CSG, their slabs look the best and I like getting bulk orders back in 2 1/2 weeks.
But the big difference between bgs and the other companies is, all bgs has to do is turn things on and they will be number one again...
All I know is card prices are falling. Maybe EOY or BOY we see 2019 prices. We need to see natural growth instead of a stimulus pumping all assets.
I remember sgc 98 was gem mint
I see crooked, off-center PSA 10s everyday. They definitely hand out 10's easily, which is why people have chosen them. That being said, their slabs allow the card to move sometimes and their grading transparency sucks. If you truly have a nice card, that BGD black label is sweeeeeeeeeet. I think BGS wants to be the premium grading company, but the market has favored the more lenient grading of PSA.
It just feels like BGS has stopped caring. If they're not going to put forth any effort, why should we trust them with our cards?
It truly does seem as if they don’t care.
15 consecutive BGS 10 black label is impossible without help.
Never forget it was PSA that graded the Gretzky Wagner as an 8 even though it came out they actually knew it was altered
BGS 10 or PSA 10? There's my answer!
Lol.
