I was onboard the USS Nimitz when they performed this maneuver. I was working in my space on a stool with steel feet, on a steel deck. They would announce “heel port” or “heel starboard” and I would slide from one side of my space to the other. It was quite a ride.
@Huawei is a criminal organization. When they did a weapons test on the USS America in 05 it took 6 torpedo's and a whole bunch of missile shots to sink her. These Carriers are floating fortresses .

the sad thing, having been alongside Chucky-V countless times, we (CVN-70 and AOE-2) were going faster than this through the Straits of Hormuz, lol. In CNN's vid of this speed turn test, they stated 35MPh, eh, 30 knots about, eh, holding back I suspect. still impressive to see such a large ship act like a speed boat on a freshwater lake. lol. Also, in fairness, speed isn't as critical as it was in WW2, due to all the AA and other protections the carrier has available to it and the crew.
I was on Independence CV 62 when we did this after dry dock. We are much smaller than ya'll nukes so can't image how it would of been, but it was an interesting day at sea.
There is a guy at the wheel trying to strictly follow orders on the outside, and the little kid inside him is getting to drift a multi billion dollar hot rod and push it to its limits ! A friend told me about being on the Nimitz when the call came in that Libya’s fighters were trying to get missile lock on them in 1981 . Alarms sounded and the flight deck was intense as the carrier went to full emergency power. He was working the weather station and said the wind speed went from dead calm to “ I had no idea this thing could go this fast “ in a matter of minutes. I’m thinking they have made improvements in the acceleration and handling over the last 38 years.
Its hard as an englishmen but the american carriers are great engineering. Its crazy how something that size can manoeuvre so well. All i can imagine though is all the stress on the frame and rudders while carrying out these manoeuvres.
Impressive to see such a gargantuan machine turn so fast. I can't imagine how big this absolute unit of a ship is IRL. I know there are photos and stats, but you never really see the scale of these things until you see them in person

Btw people....30Kts is the "official" top speed. I can attest to the fact it's more like 35-38 at least. Even the "official" speed of the 1st nuke carrier, Enterprise, was only about 34. I was trained by a Master Chief who was part of the crew during sea trials of the Enterprise....he said they could do 45knts if necessary. Jesus....almost 100K tons at 52 MPH. Stay out of the way!
That is one of the most bad ass things I've ever seen. What's that ship doing like 35 mph? Kicking up a 20ft high wake of pure White water. You can't do that with diesel on a boat that size without having a tanker refuel it constantly. Nuclear power is awesome.

You definitely find out what isn't tied done well enough. We did that at near 40 knots and had a metal cabinet fall in our back room with a crash. Pretty sure some other divisions had some spills as well.
@@legogenius1667 Top speed, rarely done - we broke once in the Indian Ocean doing it and sat for an entire day floating while repairs were done. Some of the old-timers from Vietnam era wanted us to be allowed to have a swim call. That never happened when I was in, but I did see photos of guys swimming and a small boat put out with a boson and a rifle for sharks.
Imagine what it was like aboard BB Wisconsin the one time they tested the "barn door stop" (ring up "all back full", unlink the rudders, throw 'em to opposite extremes, and hang on for dear life). Wisky was barreling along at 30kts, and the barn-door stop brought her to a dead halt ==within her own length==. During the reactivation in the Reagan years, for ==some== reason they had a lot of trouble refurbishing Wisconsin's rudders :D
@@mrz80 we did a similar move at about 8 knotts. Entire back of the ship shook. Then we hit an oil tanker. Barely made national news in 79, but Johnny Carson talked about us. No serious injuries, but 3 to 6 million gallons of oil spilled near Singapore.
Nothing like drifting an aircraft carrier.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Protect and swerve.
Thats funny as shit dude

to a large ship - a large torpedo
we have them
@@ironsky10 Bitter Ruski as usual. We have planes that detect submarines.

Indeed. Not to mention, a carrier is never alone. The chances one torpedo gets through the entourage of a carrier group is almost zero, let alone 5+.
The guys driving the ship... turned it into a massive speedboat flippin rings on the sea. That has to be fun for at least one person on the test crew.
It's not lol
There ought to be about a half-dozen people skiing behind her.
Wishing the Navy and US success with this class of carriers. I know you got some hurdles to get over yet. Good luck and God bless
If there was anything on the tables on the mess decks it's on the deck now.

youre drifting the mall

And that is why there are dents on the carrier to fasten down the aircraft
