I think it was the ending joke that kind of killed a bit of the energy. It turned it from Napom favored to a fairly even battle which comes down to preference.

Had a good chance against Alem with his powerful drops as it was so novel and contrasted to Alem's precision but decided to spend half his second round doing some vocal fry garbage that has never been done again because it simply wasn't good. Napom has a strong ability to self-sabotage in the finals of competitions.
I truly love river and think he’s an incredible artist, but for me I felt like Napom won this battle no question. Totally agree that he captured the winner’s energy. He was the only one to actually make river seem nervous, and for me he brought energy that was unparalleled by any other competitor.
But then again out of the two he’s the one who repeats his beatboxing, granted it’s their styles but yeah out of the two napom repeats his lip roll but other than that it’s pretty even

In the quarter and semi final napom used parts of his old tracks, earthquake, roll like this which he has used in previous GBBs, but in the final he did not reuse anything he has done in previous GBBs so giving him minus points for being true to his style and using liprolls is just dumb.
He lost because of the last 15 seconds, he could have made a drop like he did against wing, but decided to just make some jokes and mediocre beatboxing to finish it off. That's it.
Making river nervous and having winners energy doesn't mean he should have won. Just throwing structure, timing, and technicality out the window huh?

Both of Napoms rounds were pieced together from showcase material I heard before the competion. Granted the arpeggaic technique and some of the other techniques from River i have heard similar stuff but for me it was new rounds. Napom constantly re uses material albeit in clever ways. So not sure I agree with you. Also after the competition Napoms behaviour on his live was miserable and bitter.

Everything about Nape at 4:53 reminds me of the old days. The gestures, the hat, the MASSIVE liproll drop, and most of all, the energy. River's 2nd round was really impressive, but I feel like Nape deserved this one overall, so it's nice to see a lot of people agreeing with that. Plus, if he had won, it could've been an insane capstone to his career. Still a legend regardless

River still had battle energy second round tbf his first round was slow but the second round he was in Napoms face and doing fast complex beats and kept it the whole way through, Napom was trolling abit towards the end and killed the battle energy which is why i felt River won. Its extremely close tho. Napom is such a beast when it comes to countering its a joke.

Napom is the GOAT. If anyone has followed his journey from 2013 until now, you will understand why I say that. He creates magical sounds, super difficult techniques and crazy energy. It can be said that he is a genius. He never stops fighting, maybe that's why many people find him boring. But if you listen and analyze carefully, you will see that Napom is an unlimited creator. In addition to his huge titles, he left behind many works that are imprinted in our minds, such as musical hits. To win a major tournament is difficult, but to maintain top form for a decade is many times more difficult. Napom lost many matches that he should have won, but that didn't stop him from giving up. Even though he had a moment when he got drunk and said bad things. But he still leaves us with respect, an eternal motive.

O.M.G. watching Napom call out River in the first round by with a choice style counter was amazing. And then watching River coming into the second round swinging hard with his own style choice counter of Napoms counter was nutts. And then holy crap then the counter to the counter of the counter. I really really really wish these matches had more rounds to them. This was a crazy battle and I am sure that if we let those two monsters keep going it would have only gotten more competitive and better.
Napom countering this 2:34 in 4:53 and countering at the beginning of the 2nd round were two absurd things, he deserved to win

I've always wanted to know the judges' opinions and watch their POV, which is not always displayed while the battle is happening for obvious reasons. To me (a non-beatboxer who absolutely loves beatbox), this content is really helpful because it helps me understand when a beat is really complex or when there's something happening that I cannot comprehend yet. I'd love to watch each judge's POV and know their opinions, so I hope that next GBB will be better at showing you all, gorgeous monsters
There’s been a lot of people bashing River for some reason, not in these comments but mainly on shorts or Instagram and it’s kinda sad. They both deserved a win at the end of the day and they’re both super talented, they put their heart and soul into these rounds for us to listen to.

i couldn't make a decision on both Napom semifinal nor this one. I was split. River had sweet harmony and musicality. Napom had the battle energy and the best counters. Wing and River were both tight, technical and versatile. Where Wing made a mistake was trying to out Napom, Napom. In the end that was a huge mistake that cost him the round despite everything. But River brought so much heat. I couldn't imagine how hard this choice was. I watched it before coming here and I could not imagine how many little sounds you could hear live from both. Those tiny complexities from River in the end would have won my vote as well as his confidence in staying to his own style. A smart decision to try and not be a better Napom but to be a better River. Wing lost because of that little nuance on a split decision. And I believe this is what allowed River to succeed. He did the best River he could do.

I would vote for River in this battle, as River really shows lots of new never seen technique and great composition in both rounds, while Napom's round didn't show much evolve in his style (very powerful and effective in battle, still), and the structure's kinda off. So it's close but I'll give it to River overall.

Napom brings more power, energy, confidence and battle performance. River simply had more strangths and didn't mess around with jokes or poor transitions between routines, and I think this was observed for the majority of judges.
For napom to be beatboxing in competitions for so long and still is making routines that are extremely effective is very impressive big ups to him and I hope he continues to be great

Glad to hear your take and not surprised to hear you voted napom. Napom was really spot on when he said "you don't look like your having much fun." River is not very good at the showman aspect where napom is one of the best and it really showed in this battle. River was more uncomfortable here than when he battled ice and napom was straight up clowning around. I think Napom was the 2023 gbb champ in many peoples minds. We gotta get his MONEY BACK
So much people are saying that NaPoM's joke at the end justifies River winning, and I think thats just stupid. NaPoM clearly should've won in my view, he brought more energy, flow, confidence and had more battle in him than River. Also, even though NaPoM is pretty repetitive, he's also very innovative, meanwhile River's final round's sounded extremely similar and worse than his previous rounds in 2023
More flow? Napom does what he always does - freestyling and mix and matching previous routines. He often doesn't do transitions between routines well. He's improved in his transitions over the years, but it is still a major pitfall for him. So no, I'd give flow to River in this battle.
River brought more flow, contrast (e.g. dyanamics and tone), variability (style), originality, musicality, clarity, structure and even technicality, as D Low mentions himself on that last point. Don't under-estimate the difficulty of combos and fills that River pulls off. Napom does indeed bring more power, energy, confidence and battle performance but that doesn't cut it against the sheer number of River's advantages for me, and clearly for the majority of judges also.
With all that considered, breaking your routine with a spontaneous joke that isn't timed to keep the energy of the routine and with a drop that follows that doesn't match the energy of the punchline he is trying to deliver simply is a poor decision. I disagree it is the reason he lost - the main reasons being what I mentioned earlier - but it is certainly a fair criticism to say it also contributed.
napom really stepped up this year. it seemed previous years he would always pull out his standards, which he did this time too, but differently. really switched things up, seemed like he was having way more fun.
Anything I could say about who should have won this is all a matter of preference. Both have remarkable skills that I couldn't even imagine trying to perform, and in their own ways, they're both absolute champions. I do have preference to River's style of beatbox, but D Low makes some great points that NaPoM had the energy and experience of performance that got the crowd going. I can't imagine what it would have been like hearing it live in studio, or where I would have honestly put my vote if I was there.
I can't wait to see what the next GBB will be like. Observing the current wildcards along with noticing that none of the top 3 beatboxers of this championship have backed out...GBB 23 was on another level, but I have a feeling that GBB 24 will desTROY it.
At 9:00, NaPoM should've done the bite reference bc that segment was taken from Colaps during his battle with King Inertia "this is precision"

i dont do beatbox but i follow it closely. this feels a lot like when you battle in the final vs toma. toma captured the stage. at that point i always felt like he could have won but i occasionally watch it back from time to time then i realize you are way more technical and always willing to try something new and then also realize toma just reuse some of the stuff he did in other competition. you very well deserved to be a the winner.
Big fan. Been watching beatboxing vids for years at this point. Wandering why you all have decided to honor us with the judges scoring, but then chose to leave us wondering for the finals?

napom's round 1 is for sure one of, if not THE, highlight of the solo category for me this year. for the whole battle i can see how river won it. his 2nd round was pretty hardcore, meanwhile napom fell a bit off. all 4 rounds are worth for a final though.

Honestly Napom not winning this battle really confused me. I think there was no question he should have won this, and the fact that he didn't makes it difficult for me to understand what the other judges were looking for in a BATTLE setting.
how about not telling bad jokes and then leading into a bad drop in the last 30 seconds of your final round in the final battle?
That'd probably be something I'd see as a reason to deduct major points as a judge.
@AJE1111 I'm sure that's the judges reasoning, and I do agree with you. However I think Napom wins round 1 and then clearly beats River with the first 60 seconds of his second round, while River did nothing to match Napoms battle energy or confidence and was overall not very pleasing to listen to (of course just my own opinion). I think Napom did the joke because he felt the win was already in the bag, and I honestly agree with him that it was. He had nothing left to prove in this battle at that point. All respect and congrats to River, though. He is an incredible beatboxer. However, I will say I preferred his material in GBB21 much more to this year and felt he deserved to win that year over Colaps.

There were also techniques that Gene used. Napom had his own unique kicks and was very powerful. Energy, power, technique, impressing the audience and making them laugh. Napom has all of these. People enjoy listening to it. I don't understand the judges, I don't know if it was a problem that they were both French. He reached the final 3 times. His opponent in all 3 campaigns was France. Alem, Pacmax, River. Yes, the Alem deserved it. Yes, Pacmax deserved it, but this time it was Napom's deserved, my friend. Napom was definitely very strong and it showed. He deserved the championship. I'm so sorry about my Napom. In the napom vs river duel, they were both very good, I think napom was a little superior. I think it's unfair. Thank you for saying this. I love river but gbb21 he was way better. Honestly if colaps wasn’t also competing river would’ve swept and i would’ve been perfectly ok with that. But something about his performance this year was off
In my view river improved like crazy in the past 2 years! He is now on an actual champion level. And for me, the fact that he was so clean throughout the whole tournament makes me feel like river 100% deserved it. Napom was kinda chilled sometimes and doing various stuff without big structure behind it all the time. Napom could ve won it, but I think for him, as he already has a champion titel, he was more at the stage just for fun and not to grab the title.
As someone who doesnt know much nor how it is scored, from an outsider view i feel their round 1's were on a much lower level but NapoM's round 1 was slightly better.
However round 2's were amazing and extremely close, i feel River's was the tiniest bit better hence how he got the win, i feel all Napom needed to do was do a slightly better unique new energetic bassy drop after his gene line instead and that would of been enough for him to win imo.
