As I always say, Mr. Rick Wakeman, as a keyboard player, is the GOAT. And no doubt about it. A true legend. Dig him for almost 50 years. Greetings from Brazil!
I've never had that ability to play an instrument (or even touch-type) and know where my fingers are spatially. It amazes me how someone can play a piano or keyboard. Kudos to Rick for being able to do it so well.
Thank you for the recommendation, Pete. I needed to listen to something like this, since my PC was driving me insane a little earlier... I really liked 'Hidden Depths', 'Man in the a Moon', 'Cuban Carnival', 'Dinner Party'.
More weekly new product shows always means more listening. Can appreciate Rick's words about painting pictures as early on most of my rock and pop piano playing was played along with the song being sung in my head. Have listened to some of this prior to watching and find most of your comments fair and right on point which is a bit disappointing as the old fart in me wishes for more of Rick Wakeman early in his solo career. Haven't listened to all but certainly will do so at least once but very little so far seems to grab listening attention. But certainly will back up and listen to the other album of his mentioned. Thanks again, Pete, for all the listening you do for those of us interested in all the new product you bring to our attention.
I had read somewhere not to expect another Red Planet and that this wouldnt be a full on prog a;bum so whenI first listened my expectations werent dashed. Ihave found that Its really grown on me with every listen, and I have to contextualise that by saying that I was encountering a pretty streesful time at work when I first got it and found it helpd . Its one of those albums I'll go to when I feel I want a bit of a light relief form the strurm and drang of heavy metal, rock prog and fusion. Love Hayley's voice - but then being a Brit I'm also a bit of a fan of Strictly Come Dancing (our Dancing with the Stars in the US) especially when she gets to sing on it. Perhaps you need to have a fair bit of the English Aesthetic inside you to appreciate some of it - e.g. a day spent on the pier? You are absolutely right in that its not symphonic and its not prog and is more laid back softer rock. I really like it but I can appreciate why its not going to be everyone's cup of tea.
Damanek is a band formed by Guy Manning formerly of the Tangent and United Progressive Fraternity and Sean Timms of Southern Empire and Unitopia. It also includes Marek Arnold also of United Progressive Fraternity. It’s melodic Progressive rock with hints of Jazz and at times World Music. Fans of Neal Morse should love this band
Thanks for the honest review. I have 7 of his CDs, but not Red Planet, which I will check out. You're the second RUclipsr who reviewed this album that I've listened to that didn't like it, so I will steer clear of it.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Pete, how is this possible? I always assumed you already know every single prog, fusion, metal, & rock band that has ever existed, and which will ever exist in the future. With the unbelievable amount of music that you are able go through, I also assumed somehow, unlike all of the rest of us in the world, that you actually have 34 hours in each day to make it all possible.
Well I wouldn’t say spotty it depends on what you like if you only like prog then yeah but his classical and piano albums are still good just not prog.
I remember a hot day JULY ,1973, almost 50 years ago , buying 6 Wives! Now I have 80 of Rick's albums. I like this album. Pete expects this album to be another Red Shift or Journey. Pete dismised most of Rick's catalogue, so he is in the negative biased column. He wants to toss Rick and get to ENSLAVED! As a Pro-Rick fan, I reguard this as a 4 out of 5, and a BUY!
I will try. Red 🌎 planet. I hate to be sac/ religious but I will admit , I do not own one single album by Rick. I understand his importance over his long career , just never was that interested to dig further. Thx again PETE 👍💯
I was so pleased to get this album, and thoroughly dissapointed when I listened to it. The first track was great but it was all downhill from then on. The album reminded me of the sort of music a restaurant would play in the background.
I appreciate the review, Pete. I have a number of Rick's albums and like you, some are really great. And some, disappointing. This one sounds a lot like Tapestries (1 really great tune and the rest, forgettable). Guess I'll at least listen to it before purchasing it.
Agree, Pete. Thanks for letting me know it's not just me. I guess this means we have to wait another fifty years for Rick to rock out again. I knew it would probably be like this, but I was hoping perhaps due to the popularity of The Red Planet that he might give us more in that vein. The vocalist has a nice enough voice I guess, but for whatever reason her phrasing never catches my attention. After three or four listens I'm probably done with it. Shame.
Thanks for the review Pete and I must say I have to agree with all you have said, I found it boring and uninspiring which is a shame as I really like several of his earlier works
Pete, you probably pronounced Dave Colquhoun's name correctly at your first attempt. I think it's probably pronounced Collhoon. ... and by the way, I've heard this album once. To me it's just elevator music. Very bland, very forgettable and as a Rick Wakeman fan, very disappointing
Hi once in a while I disagree with you, amd as a huge Rick Wakeman fan I'm giving it a 3.5 out five. I agree that it isn't as good as the Red Planet, but it have its moments
The elephant in the room is the concept. It’s such a pathetic rip-off of Pictures at an Exhibition. Would he have had the balls to release this if Keith Emerson were still alive?

Aw, hell no. Keith Emerson wiped the floor with him.
@@kathyratino962 yeap... so close..

Great to hear that Mr. Wakeman is still going strong. Looking forward to your insights on this one Pete. Thank you.
thanks for the honest review Pete
Thanks, Pete!
Wakeman's good, but long live the magic of legendary, Kieth Emerson!!!
I like it pleasant on my ears

Got the signed version when it first came out. Loved it. I give it 4 out of 5.
Loved "The Red Planet" as well.
Thanks for the review. I'm in agreement that a fair amount of Rick's catalog has not been my kind of prog, (with all respect to Mr Wakeman).

Absolutely! Guy Manning had some great solo albums, and played with Andy T., in Parallel or 90 degrees!

The Red Planet is much better and is Rick on good form. You WILL enjoy that album I think.
I don’t recall you doing any reviews of the band Damanek. They have released a fantastic new album Making Shore
I have all 3 album releases on cd
I've never heard of the band.
there amazing has ex tangent member guy Manning i second this band also.

Actually, PETE has “ hidden 4️⃣8️⃣hour days. LOL 👍💯
His discography is pretty spotty

Haley’s voice reminds me of Kate Bush. That’s a compliment.
Agree. Listened to it for the first time this morning in gym and then had to turn it off. Blaah!

A step down from The Red Planet. 3 stars
Sad to say, I would have to agree with you Pete. I was disappointed.
Rick Wakeman should've played on the Black Sabbath album 13 just like he did on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
I was a huge Wakeman fan back in the 1970's I do not think he has made a good album since which is a shame.
Send it to Steven Reid as punishment, lol

I have to disagree with you. It sounds rather good. The Red Planet is a hard act to follow...

From what I've heard of this, its one to be avoided, easy listening middle of the road mush - ugh!
