Tom Prince - Is Heavier really Better? 3 Posing Videos + Interview

  • It's not always the case but so many times we hear, "That bodybuilder looked better when they turned pro." A person's frame can only hold so much muscle before it starts to distort in some way. This is not a diss on Tom but the mind set that weight gain equals improvement.

    Honestly, I like pro BBuilders physique better at the NPC. When they become pro and they take their drug regime to the next level, their physiques look low quality. Protruded abdomen, no longer have that dry look, some even look like they've age by a decade. I rather be 225 dry then to be 255 with a stomach looking like I'm holding tons of water.

      There are SO MANY examples of what you wrote. Flex Wheeler looked AMAZING around 220-230 & when he got in the 240's plus in 1999-2000 he looked like he had oil in some places & didn't have the detail or aesthetics he did at the lighter weights. Flex liked his 99 look & thought he should of beat Coleman at the 99 Grand Prix. I've seen backstage footage of Coleman & Flex pumping up backstage from that show & Flex is dreaming if he thought he was close to Coleman. Flex looked smooth in comparison when they were backstage next to each other. Coleman looked like an Alien...more impressive than the 2003 backstage footage for sure. I'll get some free time & make a video on it.

    Tom Prince is one of my all time faves! I do prefer him from 96-01 though. Even in 01 he was starting to look too big. But he trained at Gold's Venice and was surrounded by some of the most massive and best bodybuilders on the planet at that time so I'm sure he had no choice, but to think big, bigger, biggest. But he sure looked great at the 96 nationals. So did Fletcher and even Titus looked his best ever too at the show.

      Excellent point. He was harder an granier, and would have beaten Brandon Curry easily. Growth, insulin, ruins many physiques. Look at his belly button, it gets bigger and bigger...

    • @truthsayerq7264
      @truthsayerq7264 4 года назад

      So what you are actually saying is that the gene pool has in fact receded, yes? Because that would seem to be your suggestion based on the fact that you are championing his ability to dominate the pro ranks today!
      Firstly, the gene pool has widened and will continue to do so courtesy of evolution. And secondly, he would simply not dominate todays pro ranks, he had glaring weaknesses back then and they would only be magnified today. Brandon Curry is not the best bodybuilder alive today, that is clear, but he is the owner of an upper body that is still Olympia standard, and by that I mean top three. Tom Prince had good legs and excellent hamstrings....but they did not compensate for the deficiencies in his upper body. He was never an Olympia contender in the 90s and he certainly wouldn't have been today.

    • @izzythomas848
      @izzythomas848 4 года назад +4

      @@truthsayerq7264 I think the general point that I'm trying to make is that in the early to mid-nineties the overall competition was better. Tom Prince is an amateur here, and could easily compete with today's pros. Look at the amateur circuit now at the national level, there is no comparison. Again, I think the use of insulin and the overuse of growth hormone has caused many adverse effects over the years. As for Brandon Curry, he was my pick to win this year, and I was rooting for him. That said, I watched a recent interview with Dorian Yates and he commended Brandon on his win, but said his physique wouldn't have been enough to win in the nineties. The competition was too exemplary. So to your point, the "gene pool" hasn't receded, but the overall competition has.

    • @francescoporcari8597
      @francescoporcari8597 2 года назад

      @@izzythomas848 this is due to hgher nbumber of pro cards distributed. Same gene pool combined with more pro cards implies that lower level athletes will compete as pro, thus dumping the general level. In addition, this implies also that, compared to 90's, nowadays elite level Bodybuilders don't compete in many shows, they simply try to get their mr. olympia pass, and once they got it start Mr. O preparation (AC is an exception because of his prize).

    I agree with your point but I think the problem is, is the there are always a few guys at the top spot who CAN retain their shape AND be massive. All the guys placing below them know deep down that they can't beat them unless somehow they can come in with the same shape only bigger. And then they're hooked. Until nowadays maybe where there's classic and 212.

    I feel that even Tom May have sacrifice quality. I don't think it was due to his getting bigger although I can see people's points. I always thought it was a known fact that his kidneys were failing him probably a little bit before he realized it. I'm not a doctor I'm not an expert but him holding water not getting in condition and having certain issues that he described and other interviews are definitely issues of kidney problems. It's an also known fact that his Guru or coach Chad Nichols was a very big advocate of diuretics and more diuretics. On top of the bodybuilding Lifestyle on top of the dehydration and let's face it in extreme guy like Chad who is built some of the most extreme and unreal physiques we've ever seen but still extreme. I'm a huge fan of Tom Prince more of an NPC competitor than a pro. Same with Craig Titus same with a lot of the bodybuilders. It meant something to become a pro not that it doesn't today but there's a lot more of them to water down a little bit. Back then to earn your pro card meant a lot more than it does today.

    everybody has a "sweet spot" body weight where looks their best , depending on his frame size mostly
    Flex Wheeler looked his best at 216-218 lb in 93 and looked darn good in 97-98 at 224-229lb. But in 99 tried to come in at 240s and looked soft as hell next to Ronnie.
    Levrone looked his best in 245 lb or so, he tried coming in mid 250s 96-99 and he placed 4th everytime at the Olympia
    Ronnie looked his best below 250 lb also, dunno why he kept getting bigger after 99 where he didnt need it.He lost his condition and the waist.

    I guess some individuals can't stop and somewhere it makes sense you wanna progress and lookin at the competition you want to be bigger than before, that is automatism. People, individuals have it with cars, with a lot of things its a natural thing to go further and then you don't realise it's going the wrong direction. Shawn Ray didn't go that way, i think, but you have got to be strong and accept your own borders.

    • @KCDarin
      @KCDarin  3 года назад

      I've had a few times of automatism when recording albums for a couple of bands. (95% of bands would let me do my thing & that's the reason they hired me.. usually because they had heard a demo or album I had recorded for someone else. I would always give the client what they wanted EVEN if I knew it sounded better before they insisted on pushing this & that higher & harder. This particular bands album sounded pretty good but I have demos, where they just let me set everything up & no pressure. Their demos for their album sound amazing & not just pretty good. I never let them listen to those demos again after the 1st time because for 2 albums they pushed me to make their album sound worse. I would get to that sweet spot in mixing where it sounded awesome & one person would insist on more highs in the guitar; another more compression on the bass & the drummer telling to turn the snare up louder. They sold a lot of CD's despite that but they could have been masterpieces instead of very good albums. I'm not going to name the band but I saw them open up for Yngwie Malmsteen & they blew Malmsteen & their band away. OF course Malmsteen was this amazing guitar player but so was the one for the band I recorded. A few years later, I put out an album of my own with help of a few friends & It sounded great. It wasn't long until more people heard it & although my music isn't metal; I like certain songs in metal & can record any style. I started getting a lot of Hard Rock, metal & Hip Hop artists hitting me up. This is a long comment but I'm reminiscing in comment. One 16 year old black kid used to come in & I almost charged him nothing & would teach him how to do it himself. The other day; that kid who is now 15 years older was announced as an Emmy Award winning Hip Hop artist & my jaw just dropped. I used one of his 1st recordings in one of my videos. Part of it anyway. Pretty Cool!! At 2:30 seconds in 2006 ruclips.net/video/JkPeq5XRjQU/видео.html

That guy must hav placed 2nd in the NPC at least 3-4 times. He never turned pro. In 1995 Phil Hernon cam out of no where and beat Craig Titus. I agree that Tom Prince should have won. I understand why he felt he needed to be bigger, and at 235 lbs shredded as he was in the beginning of the video, he would've been dwarfed by guys like Nassar, Jay, and Ronnie. Yes he was and he was very smart Except when it came to taking Advil. Too much advil or ibuprophen will kill your kidneys. My roomate was taking butt loads of Ibuprophen & I hadn't seen him in a few days...then I saw his face looked like a big watermelon & from the knee down he was so swollen he had droplets of blood going down both legs because his skin was starting to rip. We put him on a scale and he was 40 pounds over what he usually weighs. I told him what to do & told him if he didn't lose at least 15 pounds in 24 hours he was going to the hospital. He lost 20 in 24 hrs. & the other 20 the next 2 days but his kidneys were close to failing. Some over the counter stuff is very dangerous if over used. Yates worst health scare was internal bleeding from something similar not the PED's he was taking. He talks about it in part 2 of his inter view with John Hansen. Thx 4 Watching

  • @JB-zo7ln

    He was absolutely awesome. But I think sometimes guys need to forget about what the scale says or what the other guy weighs on stage and concentrate on what the mirror is saying about your physique. He may have just been a little off in that 2002 show, but then again he seemed to be able to nail a sensational looking physique when he was down closer to 240. He was great though. Ive seen much much much worse attempts at guys fucking up their physiques because they tried to push their weight/size too far.

      Agree again. Paul Dillett weighed 263 at the 1993 Ironman & his taper and lats spread out similar to Arnold. He went up to 275 for the 1996 Ironman & although impressive his back wasn't as good and his flair of his lats didn't come out like when he weighed 263. His midsection also got thicker at 275. He was incredibly impressive in 93. Even his back shots got pretty good response from the audience. I found it hard to believe Vince Taylor beat him in that show; although Vince was a very good bodybuilder. I'll be doing a video of that show soon.(The 1993 Ironman) Possibly my next one.

      It's happened to so many pros...even Heath the last 2 years. I've got a video of JD from 2002. I'll check out his earlier physique. Heath maxed out in 2103. He was huge for his frame but since 2014 he's struggled with not having distention. Dennis James recently said he made a mistake chasing size & wished he'd chased shape and condition. Thanks for link KC.
      Yeah look for JD winning then EFBB British to get his pro card. He had come up from light heavies the previous year and looked great as he was.
      Sadly the quest for size nearly always takes over, as you say even with Heath.
      Thats what I liked about one of my fav physiques Charles Clairemont.
      He let his classic lines and aesthetics do the talking.

      @@mikeramgopal3912 It took me a while to find the footage. They have some 1992 Footage where he is in green trunks but he didn't look in great condition. It's starts at 3:10 & he looks WAY better. He has a very short torso which isn't bad for bodybuilding but it makes stomach distention easier to get. Kai Greene has a short torso & so did Samir Bannout. I noticed as he got bigger he struggled with it in pictures I was looking through. It wasn't too bad in that 2002 video, although it's there but some pictures really showed it. He looks great in this video link. I didn't realize he was that good way back then. Here's the Link.. At 3:10 ruclips.net/video/j1BQU31ottg/видео.html

      @@KCDarin I was at the 1992 Britain when JD won the show. I've still got some amazing pictures as I was close to the stage. He looked amazing that day. I think if he had competed the year after then he would have placed well at some pro shows. He just seemed to leave it a little too long and the guys got bigger and the judges started to reward size over symmetry.

    Tom literally kept the same posing routine for 6 years.... he didn’t have time to ‘refine’ that as well?

    Check out on Facebook anabolic talk. There's roughly 1300 people in the group. I would love for you to post your videos and you can also use it to get your videos out there as that must be the reason why you make them. And I enjoy watching them and instead of me posting them or reposting them which I would still do you should post on there yourself. I would appreciate greatly and like I said you can also show your awesome videos to others. We have a very similar taste in what we like and bodybuilding in the era that we liked.

    His posing did not help. Always off balanced, like a female gymnast on the balance beam.
    He also allowed his ab muscles to relax and distend. It is not just the poses since the judges will notice his distended gut during the transitions as he goes from pose A to pose B.

    Yes he looked better lighter but when posing on an olympia stage in the 90s with the likes of Dillet, Yates, Ruhl, Nasser..... he would of disappeared in the lineup. The only choice was to go up. He just couldn't maintain the conditioning at the higher weight.

    Looked way better at 96 USA. If u want to see an even better example look at the years Mike Mazaratto turned pro cant remember if it was USA or Nationals, I think it was the Nationals. He never looked better than the contest he turned pro. All his pro performances pale in comparison to what he looked like at his
    last amateur show.

      Oh he definitely got way bigger. You can see in the squad's is back in his chest. Even his hamstrings. Which were insane by the way. He just lacked conditioning whether it was a kidney issue or rebound on the diuretics what it whatever the case was I've heard different versions in different stories he was never able to bring the conditioning ever even when he won his Pro card he wasn't in condition

      Yes, And I found the magazine that has that photo shoot in it with Craig Titus. I didn't know if I had lost it moving about a year & a half ago. That is my all time favorite look of Tom's in that 1st footage plus the photoshoot. He looked good turning pro but just more POP to his poses.Some could be the lighting. Best he looked as a pro is that NOC footage. I do believe him about the advil. I had a friend take a lot of PED's & he was fine then he started taking a buttload of Ibuprofen & his kidneys almost quit. He was so swollen with water his skin on his shins (front of calves started to split open. He lost 45 pounds of water in 3 days. Crazy!

      If your serious, you may be thinking of Paul Demayo who also had massive legs like Tom Prince. Tom had/has kidney issues but downsized & runs a Rental Living Company with his wife the last I heard. Paul Demayo got hooked on Heroin & got a hold of a bad batch that killed several people in his area. Guys, Stay away from drugs & if you get injured don't take opioid pain medication. Most injuries you can get through with over the counter stuff. It's super addicting & VERY hard to get off once your body becomes tolerant too it. (It's great for someone who is dying or terminally ill but even if you crack a vertebrae; tell the doctor you can do without it.)

    • @edwardfortae2350
      @edwardfortae2350 4 года назад

      Hes not dead he lives with no kidney getting dialysis 3 days a week. He has a blood disorder which killed his kidneys. After he quit bodybuilding he got a transplant and again it killed his kidney on no drugs whatsoever. If you have a condition, which most guys do, the drugs can cause serious problems. It's the same thing you hear on all prescription drug commercials on tv. All drugs can kill you if your not the right person.
