😅😅I'm an American andin my mid20s I was living in Israel when this came out. it was one of the most popular songs on the radio. one time an Israeli friend asked me "what does this song really mean?" I answered "Nothing! "
What an era this was. Saw them live in 1973 which was arguably their most successful year. I was 14 years old. Musically and emotionally it was the most unforgettable moment of my entire life, and hell fire they were so damn loud.
They were loud alright. I saw them in 74 from the 3d row. I could not hear anything until late the next day. Contributing to my hearing loss might have been the other two bands on the bill that night. The first band up was 10cc. The next one was Robin Trower. What a great night of rock and roll so good. One of the best nights of live music I've ever had.
The best and loudest band i ever saw, and Noddy had the greatest voice in rock history, it's no wonder AC/DC wanted him to replace Bon Scott after his death.
Jim Lea is one case where the term "underrated" really applies. Never mentioned much in 'great' rock bass player lists, yet those who know about him (esp. here Stateside) know how good he was. When I got my first Slade album (the US Sladest) his bass guitar was what knocked me over more than anything else. Afterwards, of course, all of it grew on me....
@@klausrain111 Robert Plant is from West Bromwich in the Black Country, John Bonham from Redditch (very close to the region, but there is no set ‘border‘). John Paul Jones was born in Kent and Jimmy Page is from Middlesex. So, in a way they may be regarded as a Black Country band, though they were originally formed as ‘The New Yardbirds‘ in London.
Looks like Winterland? Great performance. Jim Lea's EB-3 by this time had been painted white when he'd gotten the neck pickup moved more towards the middle. He didn't request that it be painted white. It was a "surprise" by the repair guy. Lea wasn't happy about the "surprise". I'd be pissed off it that happened to one of my guitars or my bass. But have to admit the white EB-3 does look pretty classy when he's playing it... Thanks for posting this vid.
@B0LEND0 By a long way the Best Live Band I have ever seen ! But they were better than this performance in front of a largely unappreciated US audience ! You have only got to look at the live in Lochem 1981 video on RUclips to see the difference. Dave
I disagree and think the opposite 😂 I’ve not heard another version this heavy and at this speed -this type of behavior really showed a lot of other bands what was up even to go as far as pushing the convergence of dif scenes. Pleasing or not it’s influential music history and def convinced bands that this works.

Brits do originality so well. SLADE rocks the world FOREVER.

Slade absolutely in their element - Alive!
Of all the live performances I've seen on YT, I like this the best. Exuberant rhythm.
I love this song and I love Slade.
Saw these at vic hall Hanley fucking awesome 👏
And that my friends is how you play Bass!
best live group of the 70,s early 80,s by a mile, never got the credit they deserved, toptop band sadly never to be repeated
Winterland concerts on RUclips ar fantastic. What a great venue , great bands like Slade
As R&R as it gets.
Silly hats: long may the memory endure & worth fighting for ( culturally ).
Jim Lea is one kickass bass player.
And dont forget electric fiddle !!!!
And a bloody good guitar slinger too!

Zappa thought so…

Excellent band from the Black Country in England.

Dave
back when unattractive people made good music... love it !
😅 unattractive? Noddy's handsome! 😅
The only better live rock n roll act in the mid to late 70s were AC/DC
what guitar is Dave playing? Anybody know?
Looks like a Sam Li Sg custom
Great song but this version is too fast. The refrain loses all its power at this speed.

I'd agree. The original studio version is better placed.
Great solo! Not a single superfluous note
