You keep asking so I made it. How I pull a Miata engine. This is as easy as I can make it. They are not very hard unless you make it harder as you can see by the video. If these high school kids can pull one in a few hours you definitely can do it. - Спорт
Yes! "in case we want to rebuild it". Yes, a transmission rebuild ;) Thanks for the video. I can't speak for all, but I think many would be okay with a multiple episode series on a transmission rebuild.
Inspiring youth with a 25+ year old car ... Your students rock and you sir are a legend!
Thank you for all you do. From teaching kids to showing old farts like me how to do this stuff, you're a hero.
You sound like a great instructor, I'll bet the kids are lined up to take you class.
Love these videos, and the fact that you’ve figured out how to get the youth involved. I hope those kids get to go racing!
Great job. Maybe this would be a good time to discuss personal safety when working on a vehicle. Before I open the hood, I put my long hair tied up in a bun out of the way. If I'm wearing a Hoodia, I tie the hood strings into a bow. If I'm wearing rings or a bracelet, I take them off and put them in a pocket. I make sure that there is nothing loose or hanging on my person that could get snagged on moving parts
With me, i always do this even if the engine is not running. I see that the engine is not running. I feel that iys a good idea to get in the habit of being safe to prevent accidents
Cheers for that, finally pulled the engine and gearbox last weekend after watching and taking notes
I wish I went to your school when I went to high school.
Thanks for this video! I'm starting to plan for a clutch replacement on my NA6 and think I may go this route and replace some slow leaking engine seals while I'm at it.
Loved the video man thanks for the info!
Perfect timing for me. Thank you!!
Best knowledge base for miata stuff.
Hey Al! Thanks to you and your awesome students for this one. Your step by step makes this intimidating process (for a noob) much more accessible. One of these days I’m going to pull my own 200K+ NB engine and give it the royal treatment! Thanks again!
That ppf sleeve & bolt is a major pain in countries that get a lot of rain.
Answered on Q&A Monday
Its a bit faster to not remove the ppf from the differential side, i just loosen the transmission side bolts and Im able to pry it off and lift it out with the cherrypicker
Thank you so much for these videos! You jave no idea how much you have helped me with them!
Watching this bc i quit my flat rate job and have a parts miata with a good engine i wanna take apart for sh*ts and giggles
With da power of da ugga dugga i wanna shoot for 4 hours max
I love this video, straight to the point without missin a beat
Thank you and your students for showing us this. It should be helpful in future when I'm ready to put an engine back in
Thank you! Needed this one, going to be doing a refresh and coolant reroute on my Miata this upcoming weekend.
Finally ran t-hill east for the first time. Was able to put down a 2:16 with wet conditions
Thats a pretty good time for a raining day.
great video thank you for sharing.
Good stuff Al. I know you don't toot your own horn, but speaking of SCCA school, how many cars do you have rented? For anyone watching this the San Francisco Region SCCA school is a great way to learn to road race. Even if you plan on building or buying your own race car it's less stressful to rent a car for the school unless you have a crew to help. The school is only once a year in February and Al sells out early, plan ahead.
extremally helpful video!
Man i wish my instructor was like you back when I was in school
I want you to be my shop teacher, and I’m 30.
Love the videos!

@5:39 the exhaust almost hit him in the eyes, they should really be wearing safety glasses. When I worked on cars I got tired of things falling in my eyes when underneath like that or getting brake clean bounce off something and get right in my eye a few times. I got in the habit of wearing safety glasses almost all the time. A good habit for them to learn too.
The PPF and the press nuts gave me a lot of anxiety. So much conflicting info on if your way is ok or if that ruins the whole PPF floating around the internet.
I may have been misunderstanding the other vids / posts I read tho...
One vid was saying if you remove those from the PPF you must buy a new PPF from Mazda?
Nope, they are meant to press in tight so the PPF doesn't have play. You can't remove the PPF without pushing them out, they press through the PPF into the assembly and keep it from moving and elongating the hole.
Hi Al, great video! What do you do if you cannot free the PPF bolts on the differential? When replacing the clutch, could not free the rear bolts, but was able to lower the trans. Could not get it back in with the PPF so we pulled the engine. Will I be able to ease that trans into the frame rail without removing the PPF differential bolts?
Love the vids I have 5 Miatas myself but no builder's around my area in MS...can you get a full rebuild kit & where from? Thanks scott

@@aracing thanks man but I'm talking about pistons..rings..bearings..ect ... 😂 And it's Ku...lick ... thanks for all the great content!!!!
Hey Al, Great video. I see what you mean on the difficulty to reassembly the wiring loom brackets to the RHS side of the trans. Do you cable tie the loom or leave it hang? Is there a diagram that shows how the brackets should go?
I just zip tie the loom back onto the bracket, hope that helps!
If I have a sloped driveway and can't safely pull the transmission from underneath, is this the best/only way to DIY a clutch job? Do you have to evacuate the AC refrigerant? Thanks?
Can you tell me where to buy engine stand bolts? M12x1.5x90
I just got a Mazda Miata 2000 would like to take it racing but my gas tank is all rusted been sitting for four years. Can I put a fuel cell in the trunk and race on the track ?
Sorry for the bad news, you need to replace the gas tank
Hi Al just for my knowledge. Why taking the engine and tranny out and not just the engine?
It's easier to mate/unmate the transmission and the engine when it's not attached to the car.
the trans is really light but its still a handful to install or remove from underneath.
taking both out at the same time also helps get the engine at a better angle to come out of the engine bay
First thing you gotta do is remove the radiator. ;-)
