I'm a 25 girl about to buy a disco 2 TD5 in about two weeks to convert it and the fact that this video came up in my recommended page is a sign I'm sure of it! I've also got lots to learn and I can't wait to get started! Your video made me even more motivated. Wishing us both all the good on this adventure 💪

Hi Becky it’s bill and Herbert
    Glad you like your Landrover.
In the back put a hinged flap over where the fuel pump sits in the tank . If the fuel pump fails you don’t have to strip the floor out to get to it then . Consider running a twin alternator set up much better than a split change system plus if you have alternator failure you can switch over to the second one and keep going. It was a really a pleasure to meet you . Well keep looking forward to you adventures your doing what so many of us wish could do

100%. The fuel pump went on my TD5 defender and as it sits in the fuel tank, the whole lot had to come out. What were Land Rover thinking?

We are the largest stockists of d2 Td5s in Europe normally 150-200 in stock we only advertise a small proportion of our stock.
Beckey did ask to film her picking hers up but we declined . We’ve just supplied 12 to fast and furious 10 .we get very busy without the publicity

Regarding old Land Rovers and reliability it's been my experience that they very rarely break down to the point where they leave you stranded, but they do need regular preventative maintenance to keep them happy.

    • @skylined5534

This. My old '87 90 needed fairly regular TLC to keep it tip-top but in several years of pretty hard service it never let me down or left me stranded at any point. Great motors.

The disco td5 is a decent built car but as someone who had had two, I seriously recommend buying a Haynes manual for that model and carrying a decent set of tools including socket spanners. all landys including the disco variants need constant tlc. Good luck with your conversion.

my TD5 disco 2 was simple to work on, and didn’t really go wrong. If you get a Haynes Manual, be aware, it lies a lot. Your starter motor is held in place by two visible 10mm bolts and a blind stud with an 8mm nut. I found that out after a lot of swearing 🤣

The engine was always great, shame the rest of the car is a mess. Fluid leaks from poor quality O-rings and dubious electrics really let this car down.
On the other hand, it survived a head-on collision with a truck and my dad walked away with just a tiny scratch on his head.

I got over it and bought a marks 4x4 conversion kit and put a worked Holden 5.0 with a turbo 400 transmission, it took me nearly 2 years to get her back on the road but we are in love again. It's now way more powerful, tows like nothing is behind it ,even with 3 ton of fire wood in a trailer , very underrated 4x4 but electrical nightmares

Nice video, congratulations on the purchase.
Having worked as a Landover specialist, and having owned 3 also; I can't endorse enough what others have commented about carrying a small toolkit of sockets and spanners. Also, make sure the injector loom ( for td5) has been changed at some point. Theyre known for sending oil up into the ECU over time and cooking it. It's an expensive fix for a new ecu and will just leave you with a big cold block of metal when it dies. Halfords do a great set of tools a few of my friends have had, for about 200 quid and it has most things you'll need in a tidy black blow moulded case.
On the insulation front I'm a bit worried about the fluffy you've put in, it will hold onto moisture as there's no vapour control layer ?
Best of luck with the trip and the conversion.

Love the Disco. May I suggest Connie as a name as she is Coniston green? Also, many years ago I owned a 2002 Landy. After 3 whole years of ownership I discovered that it had a cd player underneath the front passenger seat! I'd spent those three years believing it only had a cassette player which was in the same place yours is so maybe it might be worth a look to see if yours has one hidden away too lol

This is a great idea. I've found having had a massive lorry camper and then camping in a hatchback that the car makes me spend more time outside. With big motorhomes the tendancy is to use it like a house and just sit in it all the time. The Land Rover is a nice size I think, and these are the last of the "real" Land Rovers. I was in Spain in the summer and was getting a bit jealous of people in bigger vehicles and then I met 2 German girls camping in a really small car like a VW polo, they had been going for 2 months and were off to Portugal, they just slept in the car seats!

  • @stephenbland7461

My advice to you. Get the whole of the underside treated with Lanoguard or similar. It would be such a shame if after all the hard work on the bits you can see, it fails on the rusty bits you can’t. After all it’s still needs an mot and older landy can be so prone to rust underneath, especially if you do a fair bit off off grid camping.

Great to see you doing this conversion. I have just recently made a camper conversion for my new Land Cruiser and look forward to going camping with it soon. One recommendation I have although by the look of this video it's a bit late now would have been to use the cavity insulation that is used in houses. There are a few types and one type has that foil backing. Would have been easier and quicker to cover the large sections very easily. Anyway something to remember for another time if ever you need to did this again. I look forward to seeing the end result.

A long term owner here.. picked up when it was 6 months old back in 2001. I also did my apprenticeship on land rovers so I would say I’m qualified to give you some tips on them.
Very first thing… spend time cleaning and painting the chassis and the rest of the underside, I use Jotun Vinnie guard marine paint which is really good.. I then cover it with waxoil… my wife’s disco is a 2001 with nearly 200,000 and it’s never been welded..
Drop the sump and make sure the oil pump bolt is well lockthread in… that comes out and it’s a new engine!
Make sure you leave an access panel in the boot for the fuel pump, I noticed you’ve covered it. Anything other than a VDO isn’t worth fitting if you want reliability.
Replace the injector loom every 2-3 years and if oil has crept into the ECU just remove it and clean it out with cleaner.
Next clutch change remove the dual mass flywheel… I would speak to LOF clutches and they will give you some great information..takes some getting used to but you won’t get the screeching before the clutch is worn out.
Plenty of servicing with good quality parts and drive it like a Land Rover should be driven..let it warm up and cool down and you will have a great reliable vehicle.
    Look forward to watching more.

As to tents. The Army does a 9' x9' tent that has a connector that goes over the back of a Defender. But they also fit Discos. So you can sort of have the tent as a front room but still sleep in the truck. You can get them on Bay or from Army Surplus places.

Congratulations! And welcome to the, slightly masochist, world of Landy ownership. They're so worth it though.
The Disco is a great vehicle; especially that one. They can be a bit prone to rust though so keep an eye on the problem areas. Also the sunroofs can leak. But you can mitigate against that if you keep the rain gutters clean and unblocked.

Great ! that's a nice Disco2. I suggest for her name Connie or Disco Connie, pretty obvious but I just love that Conniston Green and as you say it's a fairly rare colour.. As it hasn't had a towbar on it you may well have a fairly rust free rear chassis, but they are very prone to rusting in the back end as for some reason the Land Rover bean counters decreed that they would not put any rust preventative coatings on the underside resulting in many many Disco's going to the scrap yard long before their time. I spent two weeks under mine putting 3 mm plate on all sides of the chassis rails from the rear axle level backwards and even plated the rear crossmember as well. Mine had obviously been used to tow a boat and as a result got her drawers wet many times lol. Good luck with your conversion, I have subscribed to see how you get on! Oh and by the way Becky, please, please don't call it a Truck. That's a dreadful Americanism! It's a Landie or a Disco, but never never a truck!

How exciting! I do hope you had the engine and transmission fully inspected before you began your build. I’ve been watching many van life channels where folks buy an older vehicle, invest a ton of time, effort, and money into the build and then a few hundred miles later, there’s a costly breakdown. Best of luck, and I’m looking forward to watching your progress.

You can have everything inspected and it can still break down within a few miles , its always a chance with these older vans , and a reason why a lot of people buy Defenders , the engines are basically nuts and bolts with next to no electronics to fail.

Hi Becky, what a great start of a new chapter. When you go to Europe I can strongly suggest to go into the Alps! I did cross them two times when I did own a old Nissan Patrol. The France Italian border region has al lot of old Fort’s and old two track gravel roads that connect them. I did do Val ‘d Isere Nice and back and it was so awesome! You can camp in the Alps waking up at the top of the world. Only take in mind there are some tunnels. But my Patrol did have a lift and 35” tires and a box on the roof and that was no problem. I wish you well and great adventures! Stay well.

Nice one! I've been running the same truck for the past 12 years or more and love it! I've spent more on repairs than what it originally cost I think, but I'd never get rid of it. My wife says I'm bonkers and constantly tells me to get a 'sensible' car but she just doesn't understand 🙃. You'll certainly learn about engines, susspension, drive trains and anything else bolted to it but it's still an awsome truck. I have a safari roof rack on mine and it holds and transports anything from kayaks to sofa's. It has been all over Scotland many times and gone places you wouldn't ever dream of taking a vehicle! I'm sure you will have immense fun in it and live out your dreams beyond your expectations. Keep it serviced, drive it as it should be driven and enjoy the life of a disco owner!!!

Becky .. one simple & cheap tip to reduce condensation .. fit a set of 4 wind deflectors

  • @Ev1lsp00n
    @Ev1lsp00n Год назад

Big tip! The little black box up in the middle of the roof is the RF receiver for the immobilizer - highly recommend you make quick access to it. It's fairly typical for moisture to build up on the roof, and it kills the RF receiver after a while. A really quick fix if you can get easy access. Camping inside the vehicle may quickly see it deteriorate, due to further condensation buildup. Landy's get a bad rep for reliability, but I've found mine to be great! Yes, there are quirks, but you learn them pretty quick and can usually repair them with basic knowledge. Also highly recommend a Nanocom!! This thing saves you a ton of money and can solve some issues very easily; without it you may find yourself stranded, over some really minor electrical glitch.

Well done Becky. I believe you made a very smart choice in a vehicle, age is just a number, if it was previously looked after and you look after it, there is no reason for it not to treat you right. My worst vehicle, I was first owner, less than 10000 km on it, was in the dealer 11 times for repair of manufacture mash-ups, until in disgust I sold it. Also the newer units require a computer expert to even start looking to do repairs. Doing as much of the conversion yourself, with dad and Luke helping where needed, you will know your ride. A suggestion, before a roof tent I would try and get 2 roll up awnings, one over the rear door and one over the side. Looking forward to following you on this wonderful journey in your life.

I travel the US in a Disco 3 (LR3). I'm very excited to see your build, and your next great adventure. There are so many comments that you'l never see this... In my experience rooftop tents are amazing, BUT! remember you have to fold it back up everytime you drive away. This can be a pain when going from trailhead to trailhead, so a quick open/close clamshell type may be worth the extra $. Also, you have a Land Rover now. You can go anywhere. You may find yourself in some pretty treacherous terrain. Loading a heavy roof rack with gear can throw off the center of gravity of your vehicle. you may want to stow your heavier gear where the rear seat were. It's tougher to get it in and out, but will improve your off road ability when it's most important. When all else fails, ask your Dad!

Regarding condensation are there any windows you could take out and fit metal panels instead, (if Jake can weld) glass will always get condensation build up unfortunately. Hi Becky - what a great choice! (I have the Discovery 1 that is overnight capable). You will love the journey of making it yours. Just one thing - I may be wrong but it doesn't look like you have the central differential lock engagement ability fitted. That small lever just gives you high gearbox and low gearbox ratios - it doesn't look like it shifts sideways to engage the central diff. But the flip side is that you probably have electronic traction control. The Germans committed themselves to all the electronic traction aids so deleted the ability to mechanically engage the central differential lock. Bizarrely you might have the hardware for the mechanical diff still in the gearbox, just not linked up.... Very best wishes for the future adventures! :)
