- LA acting coach Raquel Gardner reacts to 12 iconic scenes from Keanu Reeves' movies and reviews the highs and lows of his acting performances.
In 2020's "Bill & Ted Face the Music," the long-awaited third installment in the "Bill & Ted" series, Reeves reprises his role as wholesome slacker Theodore Logan. It's the role that turned Keanu into a young star back in 1989, launching a career that now spans three decades and an impressive range of film genres, from cutting-edge sci-fi thrillers like "The Matrix" to period pieces like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Much Ado About Nothing." The Canadian actor has had plenty of blockbuster successes along the way, while also earning his fair share of flops. So, what separates the highs from the lows? In this episode of "Good & Bad Acting," acting coach and working actor Raquel Gardner ("Grey's Anatomy," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") examines the evolution of Keanu Reeves' acting, critiquing scenes from 12 of his defining roles.
Gardner deconstructs some of Reeves' most celebrated roles, from his hero's journey as Neo in "The Matrix" to his bloody revenge mission in "John Wick." Unpacking Reeves' comedic performances, Gardner analyzes the goofy appeal of his teen-slacker character from "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" and peels back the layers of self-parody in his "Always Be My Maybe" cameo. Gardner dives into Reeves' career as an action star, discussing the vulnerability he brings to his first big action role in "Point Break" and highlighting a key moment he shares with Patrick Swayze at the end of the film's famous foot chase. In another adrenaline-filled sequence, this one from the blockbuster thriller "Speed," Gardner explains how Reeves' distinctive cadence serves his role as the unflappable hero who ultimately saves the day. And she dissects Reeves' mastery of his voice in the "I'm back" scene from "John Wick," where he plays a grieving ex-assassin on a quest for vengeance.
Gardner also critiques a few of Reeves' more divisive performances. She revisits his infamous "room service" rant from the '90s cyberpunk flop "Johnny Mnemonic," addresses his spotty accent work in "Dracula," Francis Ford Coppola's gothic horror set in 15th-century England, and evaluates how he did with Shakespeare dialogue in "Much Ado About Nothing," another costume drama.
Finally, Gardner goes into some of the high points of Reeves' dramatic work. She emphasizes the subtle physical acting he does alongside River Phoenix in the campfire scene from "My Own Private Idaho," assesses his character work opposite Al Pacino in the supernatural horror "The Devil's Advocate," and tracks his transformation into the demon-fighting antihero from "Constantine," the 2005 DC Comics adaptation that's grown into a cult favorite. Throughout the video, Gardner demystifies Reeves' screen presence and distinct charisma, analyzing the unique set of acting skills he has honed over his career in Hollywood.

Keanu can do no wrong
No You're Beautiful!
No I’m beautiful
No!... Your Breathtaking!
No
He sucked ass in Dracula tho
Reeves himself said he wasn’t good as Jonathan Harker in “Dracula”. Gotta love this guy’s humbleness.
@Slightly Bonkers He meant that it was humble of him to admit his shortcomings
@Slightly Bonkers Neil Breen and Tommy Wiseau beg to differ. They're far worse.
@Slightly Bonkers I have been watching RedLetterMedia. :)
EXACTLY! His humility is what relate to; on & off screen.
Humility

Keanu is a national treasure, the guy is a saint. His movies also vary widely and as she mentioned you can really see him grow as his actor.
Keanu’s acting may not have been great in Much to do About Nothing but he looked so good! I like that style of facial hair on him.
That was my thought too lmao
Yeah, as long you look good (handsome or beautiful), you don't need talent and skill to get ahead.
@@cptpepper7731 agreed. stupid but true
keanu is perfectly fit for specific roles while he might not be the best for some other roles. ive seen good acting in him and also some bad acting. but in total i adore this guy, because he is unique. and i keep wanting to see more of him.
Absolutely! I feel the same way. Well put
I wish she broken down the scene in Point Break when he says "I...AM...A...F...B...I...AGENT!"
You mad? GOOD AND MAD??
I know man aint it wild?!
I caught my first tube today....Sir
Love that scene.Lee Stassberg eat your heart out.
Why does she keep saying "Keano"
Wow! Where were you when I was filming this! You are so right! Thank you
Because Keanu is cool
@@RaquelGardnerOfficial lol its not the end of the world...reminds me of that nature doc that Benedict Cumberbatch narrated where none of the crew corrected him saying "Pengwings" :) It's endearing.
@kshamwhizzle you mean Beneditch Cucumberbench?
I think that the commonality in all the films she reviews is that Keeanu is excellent at conveying emotion through physical strain. Through exhausting, through frustration and attempting to break out of his own body. Keanu is usually criticised for being unable to covey the gentler emotions, like his unconvincing romantic connection to Trinity in the Matrix.
His outstanding command over his body under extreme pressure built him into an acting legend whose abilities set him aside from the rest.
He is loved by everyone beacuse he's true, he entertains and he's a good person. Very few actors act and stay away from the so-called race, and watching him, atleast makes me happy.
Kudos! I thought this was a fun, gentle, and appreciative look at Keanu's work by Raquel, especially since he's so frequently mocked. I'm not a Keanu superfan, exactly, but this weird thing happened through the years -- I began to think, "This guy people keep making fun of is so much better than he's given credit for."
So I wish "Speed" (which is easily one of his best performances, and which I think changed his career) had spotlighted a strong moment, versus a weird wish for emotion in a throwaway scene instead of spending way too much time on "Much Ado." I also wish she'd addressed the fact that accent issues are not always the actor's fault -- for instance, the casting of "Dracula" is reported to have left little time for anyone to actually work on accents, but instead to basically show up and do their best. For a less technically trained actor like Keanu, especially with that California cadence, this just wasn't going to equal good work.
I do actually wish it had been more wide-ranging -- I would have loved to have seen a richer assortment of roles, so including his smoothly underrated romantic comedy co-lead in "Something's Got to Give," the much more emotional demands of "Matrix 2" and "The Lake House" and -- most of all -- a discussion of how an actor or actress's movement abilities can, beyond language, become part of their persona. For Keanu, whose onscreen grace and physicality have lent themselves to everything from the "John Wick" series to the "Matrix" series, they're breathtaking examples of combat as a kind of onscreen dance, and as this has become most embedded in pop culture about his work, it feels like a missed opportunity.
Hello fan, I'm Keanu Reeves, I knew you have watched one of movies, thank for your love, support and care, I really appreciate, how are you doing?
I would like to see multiple actors tackling the same role/scene directly compared. For example, how Shakespeare adaptations variously reinvigorate/refresh cliched lines such as in the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene.
Watch Haider!!
YESSSS, THIS PLEASE
The monologue in John Wick was real emotion of pain and anger that he used from the loss of his child, wife and friend. He used the emotions of loss and it impacts so hard and you believe every word he says when he says "now you can either hand over your son, or you can die screaming along side him!!"
I’d love to see comparisons between actors who really transform themselves for roles (not necessarily extreme method actors though) and actors who essentially just play themselves.
lol i see what you did there...
I’m not quite sure what I did +Sinn Sage but I’m glad I made you laugh 😊
@@MightyHercules-xh2gh (keanu does a lot of roles where he essentially just plays himself)

Give Keanu the right role and a good character director, he's great. His work in John Wick and especially the chair scene is some of his best.
Can Say that about any actor
John Wick is just some dumb action film where he plays the wooden role quite well -- no need for much emotional display thus perfect for bad actors like him.
It would be so great to see a break down of Hugh Jackman’s acting performances. He’s one of the best actors out there. His performances were particularly exceptional in ‘The Prestige’ and ‘Prisoners’.
Hugh in his first tv show Corelli, with his real life actor wife, the awesome Deborra lee Furness. His star potential was unmissable. Aussie tv audiences were rivetted to their chemistry.
Ryan Darkskull
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine gave one of the best performances an actor ever gave as a comic book superhero.
Debris andCo
Deborra Lee Furness and Hugh Jackman as themselves were on the tv food miniseries ‘The Kimchi Chronicles’. You’re right about their chemistry. They’re such a cute couple.
You missed Permanent Record. Roger Ebert said this was one of the best movies of that year. I agree. Keanu Reeves gave his best performance in this one. Highly recommended.
My Own Private Idaho is one of his best films.
Let's not forget he is breathtaking too
There are some roles that only Keanu could do and when he's in his element it's effortless.
I have vastly underestimated his acting in the past but this video helped me understand how talented he really is in the field
Crazy what localization can do for a actor. I'm Brazilian and actors like Adam Sandler, Nicolas Cage, Stallone and so many others people often say are bad are beloved here, because of what the voice actors do. Although the body language is there the voice really throws away the moment. Some localization studios make the scene so convincing that I sometimes cringe when watching the original.
Keanu's acting chops are really underappreciated. Glad to see him get his due props in this video. Really educational.
I am amazed that Street Kings isn't mentioned here. Keanu Reeves may not be the best actor, but the I can't imagine anyone else playing the same iconic roles that he played. Plus the work ethics of this guy is unbelievable. The action he trained and rehearsed for in the Matrix or John Wick, tell me any other A-lister of Keanu's generation or generation afterwards that could have done the same.
I really liked this commentary, it provided me with deeper insight and understanding of some scenes. Good work!
He wasn't dreaming, he was in the Matrix...
In Keanu we trust.
I thought his performance was pretty great in Devil's Advocate 🏆
Yeah idk why she thought it would be a struggle for him. He's from a super religious background and his dad is the devil. He's not gonna want to meet his dad
i agree. especially in the scene where his wife dies. that even shocked me since i used to always underestimate his acting abilities a bit lmao
Love my homeboy Keanu. He is simply skilled and awesome. Can we do one on Chadwick Boseman? That guy was phenomenal
I honestly believe cyberpunk is one of his best performances. He completely embodies Johnny Silverhand even though he’s basically the opposite of Keanu in almost every way.
true
THANK YOU for that opinion of "Bram Stoker's Dracula." He wasn't bad in the role!
He has amazing roles, and not so amazing ones too, but damn.... he is a joy to look at!
Would be so great to see break downs for different genres comedy, musical, drama, also historical films and how acting changes depending on the genre! Cannot wait to see more!! Love this serie 💞✨
Nothing but a "Keano" lovefest. The fact that she talks about "Point Break" without critiquing "I AM AN F...B...I AGENT" says it all.
Acting was never Keanu's strength but his amazing charm is what always wins people over.
@Slightly Bonkers I think it's his earnestness that appeals. He has a no BS vibe that not all celebrities can give off.
He seems like a cool guy personally but yeah hes a pretty bad actor
I hardly missed a comment to his performance in A scanner darkly. Seems to me as one of his best if not the best besides Matrix.
Loved him in Street Kings
keanu's best performance has to be The Devil's Advocate, for me at least.
Omg I'm watching this on headphones and during the Johnny Mnemonic at 12:00 breakdown, I can hear the 'Time to Hack' song! Funhaus crew, where you at??
Here, mate
This analysis mostly demonstrates why acting coaches don't make good film directors. Keanu indeed shows great skill in these performances. The problem with them is that they *don't land* and the assumption that we can make based on Keanu's extremely limited range is that despite the fact that the director probably realized the scene didn't work, Keanu wasn't able to approach the scene in any other way that worked either. That's what people correctly criticize about Keanu. He's amazing at portraying a sensitive but uncomplicated everyman who is in over his head but rises to the occasion and saves the day. He cannot do anything else, which is fine because a large percentage of movies call for this type of character in a lead role.
That's why we see Reeves struggle so mightily in scenes where he is supposed to portray something other than gamely trying his best. In the "I don't care about your crime" scene in Speed, he is trying to take command of a situation through sheer force of personality. That's just not in his bag (I would argue in Speed this actually works since the script has him fail.) In "Devil's Advocate" he's trying to match Pacino as an arrogant, self-involved striver and it just isn't credible. Johnny Mnemonic is kind of the same way. You can imagine Tom Cruise - a similarly limited super-successful leading man - absolutely KILLING the "I don't lose, I win!" scene because that is what he does. Keanu can't really get there. Same with "I want room service!" Tom Cruise could say that and we would believe it - it's a laugh line when Keanu delivers it. There's no getting around it.
This is one thing that makes the John Wick performances so interesting - Reeves as the aging actor playing an almost self-referential version of himself. He's being thrust into an action plot for the throusandth time, with the only thing that's changed being the intensely personal, haunting emotional impetus for his actions.
Keanu isn't a bad actor - he's excellent - but these attempts to defend his misses mostly backfire. These scenes that appear to be bad cinema mostly are.
Perfect explanation 💪🏿
As much as I'm agreeing with you on all this, it's what makes his Constantine so powerful and, well, his best role to date. He's so good in it exactly because this character is basically an "everyman who is in over his head but rises to the occasion and saves the day". For the movie version of comic hero it works incredibly good, and Reeves (especially given tragic backgrounds both actor and character have had) was the best choice for it.
@@SyberianVG I would argue that his performance in Toy Story 4 was great. Really conveyed the arrogance and loneliness of a toy conditioned to never fail his kid.
This is such a nice way to observe an actors performance without insulting him or appearing condescending
Hes great with playing lonely characters but not so great with normal emotional deliveries
for a minute there, I thought you would have said he is an amazing actor, Oscar worthy
The people who say that Keanu is a bad actor know nothing about acting nor his acting.
Absolutely correct dude !
Most loved movies of Keanu are the ones he speaks less.
I'm still waiting for someone to break down his performance in Babes in Toyland.
Reeves' best acting performance (imo) where it really appeared authentic was The Gift. Maybe not a great movie, but I thought he really nailed his character. Surprised that this wasn't in the break down! Also surprised ad how impressed she was with Reeves' acting, as I'd say he tends to be pretty terrible. I love the guy though! Excellent human being, and he's been part of some good movies.
So true. Would've been great if he were in more scenes, but what he did do was very realistic.
When he does less, the better he is.
It's absolutely clear Reeves is not an actor of De Niro, Pacino or Day Lewis quality but he has some good parts and he's not without acting skills. His role in "Devil's advocate" is very good.
He’s a great actor: devils advocate, my own private Idaho, rivers edge, a walk in the clouds..
I could go on and on.
He was perfect in Point Break and Speed.
As for Dracula, he was fine but that film was just a campy ham fest.
Everyone was chewing the scenery in that. Yes, even Saint Gary Oldman.
he's absolutely badass
He is the best guy but he isn't a good actor if you check his filmography you will find it a couple of good movies doesn't make you a good actor..you have to be consistent from 2000 onwards other them John wick(which was again one dimensional cause it was an action movie not relying on acting skills) he has just done trash
The best thing about him is that he's such a good person. And, that's more important than his acting. Though I like him in Constantine.
I would love to see an analysis of actors playing real life contemporary/ historical figures.
DDL lincoln
Keanu is my favorite actor
Great video but disappointing Hardball wasn't included. The funeral scene in Hardbell can really be felt maybe more than any of these characters he played in the video. I'm sure he was thinking about friends he has lost to pull that off, but it was truly authentic and a great performance.
“Keano” ?
I did a Keanu Reeves's maratone this past weekend, and I was saying the same thing about him. He Is an Amazing Actor! And watching his evolution is great!

Still his best line. (From Wick)
LOVE Keanu Reeves 💗💕💞💖
Suggestion for the next: Fear scenes, Happiness on scenes, "Sex" scenes, Superhero Scenes, Old movies/classic acting
And keep this focused in one actor only, its great too.
I remember Raquel Gardner back in the 1990's as a Venus Swimwear model. She's done quite a bit of of acting, including a part in Agents of Shield. She done well for herself after swimsuit modeling.
Excellent channel, great idea
They say that those cannot do, teach. And those that cannot teach, critique.
Keanu will live forever
Keanu may not be a great actor . But he have a lot of iconic characters. And like Neo or Constantine. Which actor at that point of time can be better in that role.
You've never fired your gun in the air and gone "ahhh?" Hot fuzz :3
I'm a massive Keanu fan, and my opinion is that he's the best wooden plank actor.
Lol 😂 wtf does that mean ?
Just give Him one freaking Oscar worthy row
Hahahahah...no
I've never seen *Devil's Advocate,* but the synopsis of _"he's facing of with the person he's trying to kill, but also the person he wanted to know all his life"_ sound an awful lot like *the Johnny Cash' song "A Boy Named Sue".*
You need to watch this movie. It's great. Dark but great.
The Devil's Advocate is a great movie. Watch it, if not for Keanu; for Al Pacino and Charlize Theron.
Can you maybe do River Phoenix?
I'd really like to see one on Edward Norton's performances. That'd be so dope!!
Deep cuts I was hoping for:
Parenthood (1989)
Babes in Toyland
Dangerous Liaisons
Permanent Record
People will hate me for this, but he is best at portraying an "average guy". More complex characters are not really in his skillset, which is fine to me.
04:11 "So he's just super naturel with his performance there"
not gonna lie, you had me at Keanu Reeves
I’d like to see Keanu rating his own acting
Are you just acting like an acting coach? If you are... good acting.
Thanks for such a great work .. please make analysis of denial d lewis
Please break down the greats like Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis... Tom Cruise, who I don't think is credited enough for his amazing acting performances. I love this series. Please keep up the great work!
I was waiting to see what she thought of his role in Dracula (least favorite) and the Bill&Ted films (my fav performances). Keanu played airhead surfer dudes very well.
I liked this where you focused on one actor. Recommendations for future: Charlize Theron, Benedict Cumberbatch, Morgan Freeman.
He is such a great actor
"Whoa!"
Have anyone seen his movie 'Destination Wedding"
Yes, and i absolutely loved it!!
Finally,a video in which someone is appraising his acting. It's nice to see such videos. He is a good actor.
Didn’t even do River’s Edge? It’s one of his best roles and one of his first.
you guys should do any scene from portrait of a lady on fire
how dare they, all keanu acting is good acting
His good sometimes and his bad sometimes.
It depends on who's doing the writing.
The Matrix, My Private Idaho, The John Wick Films, and Cyberpunk 2077 are good examples.
Bram Stoker's Dracula was good, I just wish his accent was better or just made Harker American in this Film.
Can I recommend "Evil Laugh" for a series? Seems appropriate for Halloween.
What about The gift? He's great in that one!
The Matrix is a near-perfect film. A joy to watch every time.
She's talking about moments, work, and transitions that Keanu SHOULD have done, not that are actually in the film 😂Anyways do Timothée Chalamet!
It's pretty funny hearing someone desperately trying to make terrible acting into impressive acting
This woman's eyes are gorgeous!
Completely random fact:
The longest interval between the birth of twins is 87 days.
Wha-
No one cares
How????
One of the biggest misinterpretations of bill and ted is that theyre stoners, theyre not, theyre just really naive kind of dumb goofy guys, and i think if keanu didnt play such a genuine incredible performance the way he did, he wouldve been a little more respected down the years. As a long term keanu fan, it was sad that he was criticized and mocked for so long until playing john wick.
Constantine was Keanu's best performance. A Wholly underated portral and movie
Can u do one about getting hurt and act painful
Please make a video like this but breaking down Ryan Gosling's performances!!!
Can't wait to see all the bots say FIRST
i cannot believe you are convincing me somehow that keanu is actually...good...at acting?! what is happening
Now his films no longer have to be a guilty pleasure
no one is convincing you. you are just kind of person who is "feeling perfect" on everything. if you think hes not a good actor then dont watch his film. why waste your time of watching him. simple right?.
Cage next! Nicholas Cage next!🤩😆
