Krakatoa lawn mower - how creative was that ! The SE-02 needs some oxygen and this will help it to sing and the Korg Volca Keys is ready to please ( when i get one ) so much joy it will bring cos man music's my thing ......thanks bro - i want you to know - that you'll help it flow. xx
Hope you guys enjoy these tutorial videos! I really enjoy doing them... but they are not very easy to make. lol I'm not even gonna lie. 😄 Ideas for the next tutorial? How can I make them better? Feedback is always welcome! Thank you very much ✌🙂
littleBIGsynths Some people have said that with the new tie sequencer feature you can get 303 type stuff out of the SE-02. Perhaps you could explore this idea. 💡
Yes! I am not extremely familiar with the 303 and acid... but I will do some research and see if i can make some acid with the SE-02. The new tie feature on the SE-02 should definitely help achieve this. Check out my new video where I demonstrate the tie feature and see if I am on the right track. Thanks for the feedback.
Im new here because I'm about to purchase one of these SE-02s so If I had any ideas for you to make it better, I'd probably just say maybe have all your steps set so you dont have to back track. It's just easier to follow when you dont have to back up. Other than that, i'd say this was very informative. Thanks mate.
i loved this video. I found a woman here in town selling one new in the box today, unused. I bought it from this video, really really great. I'll have more technical comments but just thanks for now.
@@littleBIGsynths I have a question, I have a Moog filter and when I run audio through it (cut off set at maximum) it sounds fatter, like it was a tube preamp or something. Do you experience the same with the SE-02? It’s on my wish list...
Thanks, you rock! I am on board with the little big synth idea for sure! Have you tried that SE-02 EXT box? I just scored my SE-02 for 200$ in perfect condition. Woot!
great deadl, I want the se02 to be my first synth but also wanted to pair with the moog werkstatt which is $200 now; this video helped me figure out how I can patch them together
Great video 👍🏻thanks. Can you also use the Roland SE-02 keyboard to send chords to Volka still using the knobs on the SE-02 for filter control of the Volka instead of playing the chords on the Volka?
Thanks! 🙂 Yeah, definitely! You will have to use a MIDI cable and just make sure the send/receive channels are matching for both devices. I believe I have another video here on my channel somewhere that demonstrates that method.
Great tutorial! Does this also work with the Roland TB-03 (instead of the Volca in this tutorial)? I would like extra filter effects to the TB-03 sound but keep the acid sound. I look forward to your reaction. Grtz. Marcel
Cool vid--inspired me to mess around with using my own SE-02 to process (filter/fx) external audio sources! Thanks for posting! Any reason why the wedged/weighted key works better than sending MIDI out from the SE-02 to the external sound device (Volca)? Seemed to work pretty well on my Streichfett... that way you can use the K-25M keyboard to perform, which is a little easier than the Volca's keyboard ribbon.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, the SE-02 is not only a great synth, but a nice audio processor as well 😉👍 The MIDI method is definitely the easiest way to achieve the same results and it will free up the Keyboard for live use. I decided to make this into a 2 part video since it started to run a bit long. I just wanted to be able to offer a bit of an understanding on how the audio input works and show some alternatives to MIDI. The main reason being that not all devices utilize MIDI or MIDI note data. (Pocket Operators, Drum Machines, etc) It probably would have been good to mention this in the video though. Lol but I'm still learning how to make these kinds of videos.✌😏 Hope this makes sense.
Thanks! that was extremely useful to me. Im not hugely interested in mono-synths but have seriously considered getting an se02 for the purpose of running some of my filterless digital/fm synths through it and all of the demos I’ve seen naturally concentrate on the synth itself, not using the audio input. Just one question that might be obvious but I can’t find an answer anywhere else...is the audio in put stereo or mono? ( & is the signal output as mono or stereo). Thanks again!
I'm confused about audio in. How does it affect the quality of the source? Can you play both sounds? I thought it was just a routing workaround for when you run out of mixer inputs. Why put the volca thru the SE when it already has its own filter & LFO?
Laura Woodswalker shouldn’t effect quality of the sound source if you’re using a solid audio cable. you can play both sounds at the same time, but keep in mind when you release a note on the se-02, the envelope will close and you’ll cease to hear the input audio. also running the volca/another synth through the SE allows you to use one as a master cutoff for gluing parts of songs together (filter sweeps during pre-choruses and many more possibilities).
Getting an SE-02 soon. Can you sync an SE-02 from the Volca out to the trigger in?? I have a JU-06 and I know it can sync with the Volcas via midi, but I want to sync with a Volca Mix..and that has no midi in, but can sync out the chain of Volcas.
Thanks! 🙂 Yes you can, but the lead on the Volca will be affected by the gate/envelope of the SE-02. If you have a sequence playing with short notes, then you wouldnt be able to play sustained notes on the vKeys. Hope that makes sense. 🤔
Well explained. Did you ever transpose the Sequencer in triggermode ( trn ) with midi? Is it a bug or a feature that the SE02 transposes to every Midi Channel even it’s not set to Omni? Your help is highly appreciated because it sucks so badly. I can not use a midi channel filter because I run a VP03 on a daisy chain. The SE02 transposes to its own midi channel and to the channel of the VP03 as well.
I apologize. For some reason I thought the TR09 had individual outputs for each sound (hats, kick, etc). So if you feed the TR-09 into the SE-02, you will affect the entire pattern. 🤔
Thank you for this video, it is very informative. I have a Volca Keys and am thinking about getting a Roland SE-02 or SH-01A. Do you still enjoy the SE02 and have you used the SH-01A to compare? Thanks
I’ve owned both and I prefer the SE-02. It has a more organic and raw sound. It entirely depends on the music you’re making and what you want of out the synth also. The SE-02 is only one voice compared to the SH-01a’s 4 voices. If you tell me what kind of sounds you need and music you’re making I can probably help you a bit more

Was trying to do this yesterday and wanted keep a gate open using the sequencer. This video has explained it beautifully. 👍🏼

Nice simple How-to with plenty of theoretical basis about how the SE-02 works. Nice job. I hope you keep these coming.
Good demo! The delay on the SE-02 makes the Volca Keys sounds awesome!
Thank you! Yeah! The se-02s filter and delay is super awesome! 😎

Thank you! Glad you found it useful! 😁👍🏻
Thanks for the good demo of this feature, very informative.
on 6:54 after adding value to 1 what to do next? I see that the video cuted in this moment and can't understand your next steps
Thanks.. Very good resources for new TR-08 users. Though you've sold me on the new Performer version.
Thanks so much! So helpful! I can’t wait to try it out!
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching. 🙂
Bringing some serious extra flavours to the Volca

can I use a midi note from and external keystep to open the filter? Do I need the k-25m?

Excellent video. If you ran a multiple step sequence with short gate would that effect the sound of the input by chopping it up in short steps?
Can u connect a guitar & use the unit as a guitar synth ?

can you use the ext input, but bypassing internal processing? (filters, fx) ?
Cool. Any thoughts on the SE filter VS the Volca filter?
Do you have the SE-02 EXT Box? If so, have you done a video using it? You’re getting some great sounds out of the Analog Keys!
Hey! Thank you! 🙂 I never got around to purchasing the ext box, but I have heard great things about it. 👍

doesnt the SE have an input that you can use to activate it without holding a key?
Thanks for sharing

I have it and I am not sure! lol It is killing me too!
I’m late but just in case it should be mono in mono out.
It is a monophonic synth without any stereo effects, of course it is mono.
I tried this with my TR-8S plugged into the SE-02 and even with the keypress method I didn't get any sound to go through it. Any suggestions?

how can i do this without the keyboard
You can use the step sequencer. Follow the second method in this video. It starts around 5:35 👍

midi sync it too!
