Dangerous USB phone chargers 5 (Quick 18W QC 3.0)

  • Another collection of dodgy USB phone chargers from eBay. This time a quick charger edition. Three cheap USB chargers that support 18W QC3.0 charging and they can supply 5V 3A, 9V 2A or 12V 1.5A. Some of those cheap chargers may not comply with safety regulations and they may cause an electric shock or fire. They also tend to have a non-existent interference suppression, poor output voltage regulation and a fake current rating.

the problem with eBay things is... even when you know what's inside and confirm it's good enough, it doesn't guarantee you'd get the same thing when you buy second time. The next product could be the cost cutting version with doji transformer etc 🤡

Exactly. I ordered 50pcs IRFZ2807 or something, that's like 55a low voltage mosfets to pwm drive a car starter, 4 in parallel without emitter resistors. Paid 1.40 doulars for them. I got recycled ones with short legs and thermal paste and some with thermal pads on them as well. Surprisingly all tested good and they have been running at 200++ amps with 0 issue. If I order from the same seller again I'm literally playing the lottary, God forbid I'd put one of those anywhere important. I mean it's a good deal, but I guess this one was too good.

Diode, maybe i 'm wrong, but for the last charger notice one more thing:
There are two outputs, and these outputs (but maybe i 'm wrong?) are connected parallel together, so if you for example connect the QC capable phone to the USB1, and negociated voltage is 9-12V you can connect some non-QC device to the USB2 and just fry this device, because there is no separate outputs with separate chip and voltage control..... The new camera works great. Very sharp picture.
I would use a double schottky diode before I use any synchronous rectification.
When I designed a steeper motor controller back in 2003, I used an Allegro stepper controller that had synchronous rectification builtin.
The problem was, if you disconnected the motor from the driver while in operation, the Allegro chip would blow up!
For the solution, I used external schottky diodes, and the problem disappeared.

I think if you've supplied the last one with 120v it wouldn't have melted. Its a flyback designed for a lower voltage input and around 10v output. When you raise the input and request 5 volts the flyback duty cycle becomes incredibly short, so the current goes high and the rms trough the diode even higher.

I like the quality of the new camera, I don't really think 50fps is necessary though, it'll just take up more of your hard drive space and take longer to render your videos. If you had lots of camera pans or filmed fast moving objects it might be worth it, I would put more priority on higher resolution rather than frame rate for your content. that random piece of metal (I think its actually a anti-vibration counterweight from a car wheel, the things they attach to balance the wheel when you have new tyres fitted) could also be a huge fire risk. as well as bridging primary to secondary, it could short the input terminals and draw huge current. the second charger though, with just a bit more care in the transformer assembly it could have been really good. certainly a very far cry from cheap USB supplies from just a few years ago, the ones that were all through hole, thrown together by hand in 30 seconds on paper and resin boards, all discrete w/ no ICs etc

    • @Basement-Science

Well the transformer is probably the only component manufacturers actually make themselves, and winding it properly is not as easy as sticking in diodes and stuff. I bet none of these workers are taught any electrical (safety) knowledge. You also can't make a Quality Check after assembly without taking it back apart, so even if they were taught, they might not bother doing it properly.

Congratulations for the video from the safety point of view of the circuit I see that it does not have an input fuse for possible short circuits of the input rectifier diodes due to overvoltage, instead of NTC it uses a resistor, on the other hand it does not have varistor protection, this circuit It introduces harmonics into the network. It does not have power factor correction.

As always - great examination and test! For YT video you should stick to 30 fps (or 60 fps) as most computer monitors have a 60 Hz screen. So when you record in 25 or 50 fps the video will be sligthly flickering as each picture is shown a different amount of time! In general it is o.k. to use just 30 fps. 60 fps is good for fast action or heavy camera movement.

  • @windward2818
    @windward2818 Год назад +1

Dear DGW thank you for the testing, but, as you know, the off-line chargers are rated for universal mains, so you should probably test at least at two AC input voltages and frequencies, perhaps 115 VAC 60Hz and 230 VAC 50Hz. Also, I am not trying to be picky, but it could be interesting to learn how the transformer copes with the power extremes, first voltage and then current.
I think the metal spacer was for keeping the PCB assembly in place to keep alignment with the power push in pins during assembly. If the assembly moves around relative to the spring tangs it could create a higher resistance connection which may overheat the assembly.
The controller ICs seem to be very obscure devices from China, which are only sold in China?

what about fixing those? like making all of them the right way, like fixing safety issues, overheating, making them be more powerfull, adding capacity, making it heat less.
Like really, last one was nice, you can probabbly fix it and make it be a great charger to use. it willbe nice to see!

On second charger it clearly stated in capacitor X2. By the way in SMPS bigger core do not necessary mean more powerful power supply size of core is mainly dictated by switching frequency.
And as distances from primary to secondary windings of transformer by standard it is required to be just 3mm for non double insulated wire (and if I remember correctly nothing if you use double insulated wire).

6:56 That piece of metal [ 5 Fe ] might be used for heat sink as well for the transformer ferrite core.

While true, it's made of iron (terrible thermal conductivity) and gluing heat sinks with such adhesive is super dumb - as the adhesive won't last for long. That design alone deserves 'extra super dodgy'.

a had a few of these here in brazil, but they are even worst, cause they had a chip just to tell the phone that is a "fast charger" but does not do any voltage regulation. the chip was not connected in any way to do regulation, just "fake info". It was a fixed 5v charger...

I was wondering if this metal weight also doubled as a kind of heatsink for the transformer. Generally I'm quite surprised because i expected way worse and no voltage switching.

You should test the isolation of the transformators between primary and secondary before unwinding with some High-Voltage-Resistance-Meter to show the difference between the different winding-methods. Perhaps you can show the flashover at the weakest position with a chinese High-Voltage-Generator too ^^.

I am very sure that FE5 is not for weight, it is iron that may be used to reduce noise generated by the transformer, the RF noise. So it becomes compatible with some CE or other standards in European countries. If you can check noise level with or without Fe 5 then u may notice that it makes difference.

Australia's nominal mains voltage is 230 volts but in many places the Sunday afternoon voltage is down to 200 volts as this when many people are making the Sunday roast dinner. Is there a way you can do a test of a USB charger at 200 volts? :)
