Adding a Grease Fitting to a Bafang Ultra Mid Drive Ebike Motor to Quiet Noisy Motor

  • Bafang mid drive Ultra motors have very little grease from the factory. The motors become very loud over time and a cure is to grease them. I have found the best grease for this is Cornhead Grease. Adding a grease nipple or zerk fitting allows easy re-greasing of the motor if it ever gets loud again.

    I just re-greased two Ultra motors. One, with 1500 miles on it, had almost no grease (and a lot of metal shavings) and the other had a decent amount, which after watching a number of RUclips videos on greasing an Ultra motor seemed to be the correct amount.
    I think you've gone overboard with the grease and I suspect a good portion of it will find its way into the controller cavity.

      After 3000 miles I opened my original motor up and no grease had migrated to the controller. The cornhead grease is awesome - highly recommended for this application. ride safe and quiet!!

      This is not a very good idea, over packing grease is just as bad as having too little amount of grease, also pumping fresh grease into dirty old grease is bad aswell. If the motor is noisy then it needs to be inspected for damage or lack of grease, not rammed full of it, I've just done this to my motor and found that the bearings have worn. I suppose I could follow your example and fill my motor up with grease, that would quiet the worn bearings.

      @@dogbreath6974 Dogbreath - I now have over 5000 miles on this motor and it operates as new. It is whisper quiet with no grease entering the controller area. You can also remove the bearing dust covers of all the bearings with an exacto blade and pack the bearings as they too have very little grease from the factory. I have a total of three on the bafang m620 and each has benefited greatly from adding cornhead grease. Ride safe!!

    Awesome! I came up with this idea myself and went online to see if anyone else came up with this idea, and sure enough, you made a great video on this. Thank you! I don't think a vouple of metal shaving will be a big problem. I'm not taking the motor out.

      Great Giulio!! I found a thinner grease tends to hold the chips better. Also use a collar on the drill bit so it only goes in 1/8” or so. You should be good!!! Ride safe!!

    You've solved one problem, but created another. As the motor casing is a sealed unit, you'll need to include a breather, or another removable screw to allow for release of the pressure that will build up when you add grease. Other than that, it's a good work around for a pain in the rear process.

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  3 месяца назад

      Hello Derek! the case is not air tight as air escapes around the Crank/ Torque sensor. No pressure problem. The seal between the gear case and electronics also works adequately to keep grease out of the controller. Just don't use a powered grease gun and go wild!! ha ha. Ride safe!!

    Excellent...thank you for sharing this. An another commenter said, Lekkie make a replacement cover for the BBSHD that has a small hole for inserting grease with a micro grease gun. I've been pumping my BBSHD full of grease for 4+ years now and I've never encountered any problems...only quiet and buttery smooth. So the "you're overgreasing it" chorus is mistaken...at least for these motors.
    Where are the bearings you recommend pulling off their dust covers to grease when you're greasing the rest of the motor?

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  Месяц назад

      Hello Colin! I love the BBSHD. Very powerful and reliable. On the G 510 there are 5 bearings that look like they are sealed but they only have dust covers you can remove and pack with grease. The bearings have very little grease in them. Sorry for late response- I was out riding!! Ride safe!

    you cannot trust that making the hole in a closed motor that there are no chips inside! I could see doing it once when the motor is open. Also those set screws are made to press against something inside. you have no guarantee that the set screw won't unscrew into the motor. You should either leave the grease fittings or use a pan head screw.

    too much grease I think will be hard for the motor, maybe a gear oil has less of a drag. Usually, the noise is coming from the slightly worn-out bearings. You hear less noise because the grease muffled the bearing noise. In my opinion.

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hello Mr Man! After thousands of miles on multiple motors, the cornhead grease works perfect! The amount of grease mentioned in the video seems also perfect as no grease has migrated into the controller cavity where gear oil as suggested by you will probably leak into that area. As for the grease slowing down the motor, be realistic, it is a light grease with a coefficient of friction of around .05. Ride safe!!

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  Год назад

      Thanks Michel, I would avoid oil. When you turn your bike over to work on it, the oil will leak into the controller. A few micro chips of aluminum will not affect steel gears it they possibly could migrate into the gears. Also the bearings all have covers so no possibility of contamination. If you can find cornhead grease, that still is your best lubricant. Ride safe!!

    I dono how i ended up on this video but looking at this it's definitely not a good idea to add that much grease. There is no gasket inside the housing so you'll eventually start leaking grease into the electronics as some will break down. Never drill into a motor and leave shavings in there open it up drill your hole and add maybe 10 pumps to start with. Some motors make more noise then other that is fine. I would honestly do this modification on my own bike run it for 100 -250 - 500-1000 miles and then come back and post the video once you've identified that it will not cause issues!

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  11 месяцев назад +1

      baba, I know it seems like a lot of grease, but i assure you after many thousands of miles and opening the motor up to check, no grease has migrated into the controller.
      There is a rubber grommet that separate the two chambers. If you drill first without grease then grease the drill bit for the final cut through, you shouldnt get any chips and when you tap the threads with greased tap no chips either with practice. BTW they are aluminum chips so they don't effect the gears if by some unknown miracle they migrate to the gears , the chips do no harm to the gears. ride safe and quiet!!

    That is WAY too much grease in my honest opinion. Not removing the old grease, not great. Frankly you can remove the few screws on the cover, not that hard. This is gonna work, ofc its going to be silent, but the gears are going to fight and "swim" through the grease now. I would have stopped at like 30 pumps max. You did stop at 40, then video cut and you go "so i put 80 pumps in there". I could not hold a good chuckle. I am not a mechanic and maybe i am wrong, but those 80 pumps seem to be a LOT.

      Please don't take my comment badly man. Great idea. Let's just agree to disagree on the right amount of grease.

    • @filoncmike
      @filoncmike  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks Poma! re: not removing the old grease - since there is very little grease from the factory and little contamination occurs during operation, I would say that is not a factor. The idea for the video is that one can add a grease fitting in the perfect spot without removing the motor and easily grease their motor. I've removed and inspected the motor at least 5 times in my 5,000 mile hard driving journey and every gear and bearing is factory fresh. 80 pumps is not that much and just fills in the cavities without getting into the controller area. glad you got a good chuckle! 😀 ride safe!!

    You cannot be teaching people to destroy their motors with 90 pumps of grease. That is irresponsible, and many will be calling you out with this. You don't realize that grease splatters like water at high speed, and also melts into a liquid when hot. I give that motor 20 miles before you have a problem.

      @filoncmike  2 дня назад

      Sorry Mali! Closing in on 5000 off road miles with no problems. I open up the motor every 1500 miles and the motor looks brand new inside and the motor has so many areas that hold the grease the amount is not too much at all. Ride safe and quiet!!
