It's insane how, when you compare this to Sonic Mega Collection, how much more love there seems to be in the Mega Collection than here. Attention to details, etc. It's just. . .odd how lack luster Origins is. I agree 100% with bickuribox12 in that it's a good entry point for people to play the games (or again), and I certainly enjoyed playing through them, but the museum, the lack of options, and so on, just made the experience shallow and surreal in a way.
SEGA really can’t stop being its own worst enemy, huh?
Forget Mega Collection, what about Sonic Jam? Still easily the best Sonic collection ever made, it even had difficulty modes that changed the entire level layouts to be more forgiving and, crazy as it sounds, actually let you customize your experience or choose the original completely unaltered.
It was also made by the original Sonic Team, so all of the changes and additions were actually given a lot of thought and care. And unlike Mega Collection which was just emulation of a bunch of unaltered roms of the games, Sonic Jam's games were actually ported directly to the Saturn hardware. That's not even mentioning Sonic World. Yeah, Origins was nothing compared to Mega Collection, but neither of them even remotely compare to Jam.
@@themindfulmoron3790What’s funny is that in theory, this could’ve been a modernized Sonic Jam in a way, but… it just wasn’t.

Sega Didn't Add Playable Amy In Sonic 1&2 (2013) Mobile tho
@@rocketbetanetwork25That isn't the point
I feel bad for the team from HeadCannon that worked on this. They kept begging Sega for more time but were denied repeatedly. They have offered to fix many bugs and continue working on the game but it seems Sega doesn't care. It's no wonder they were reusing assets wherever possible considering how much time Sega gave them to port these mobile versions.
Proof that Sega doesn't care about Sonic anymore.
Sega has been making bad decisions since the dreamcast
actually they finished the game and sega intentionally made it worse according to stealth
Sonic Boom all over again
@Lucha Luca That still dose not change the fact that sega screwed with bigredbuttons original vision of a new and lore heavy take on sonic
I'm convinced that Amy was supposed to be playable. All of the animations suggest that she was supposed to be there with the other playable characters. She would have also been a super interesting addition if they kept her Advance 1 mechanics.
I feel kind of opposite honestly. She's only in the animations because she kind of has to be, being a part of the intended driving force for CD as a whole, being her kidnapping. Considering her role in her whole game was simply "Girl" though, there wasn't exactly a lot they could do while still requiring including her in animations.
Would have been nice to include her though, especially for Sonic CD where she'd be able to get back at Metal Sonic herself.
@@GameAW1 If her sole existence in the game was because she's in CD... Then there was no need to include her in the ending sequence, where her ONLY contribution was with Metal Sonic himself. Yet, there she is, running with Knuckles, and smashing shit with her Peko Hammer that she gets in the later games (which did NOT exist during CD days), which also never happened in CD. This implied that Amy was planned to be playable. It's weird to have a splash art of the heroes fighting Eggman's evil schemes with a side character *that doesn't fight at all*.
@@kyotanaka920 She actually did have her hammer in the classic days. She first got it in Sonic the Fighters. And Amy is, despite her role in her home game, as iconic to CD as Metal Sonic, so she's pretty much a requirement. Plus she's literally the only good aligned character they could add to acknowledge CD's influence at all.
Fuck that. Amy was fuckin annoying to play as on Sonic Advance. I'm glad that annoying pink piece o shit wasn't added as a playable character.
I think someone meant that she doesn't even have it in CD by itself, as Sonic the Fighters is a spinoff meaning that she's not meant to be a fighter originally.

"Mods have already fixed this"
It really goes to show how Sega doesn't even *try* to figure out what we want, so we have to tell them ourselves
Or even worse, it took modders 1 day to fix those things. Just shows how rushed it was.
Sega has never been smart with their decision making. Sega japan is especially tone deaf on what we want out of sonic. They're the reason that this collection feels as incomplete as sonic genesis and sonic 06, two games from 16 years ago. You'd think sega would be smart enough to not make the same mistake again since that is what nearly killed sonic but no they seem to have forgotten.
@gizmo I mean, yeah, but that was way after this video, and this comment.
And not pay them anything for their work.
At least sega supports modding, unlike nintendo.
What confused me oddly is the ending cutscene of this game makes me feel like Amy WAS supposed to be playable, but as you said, Sega… Sega.
Also, I found out in Sonic 2, if you get 50 rings, complete a special stage, then restart the act… you can go into that same checkpoint and get another chaos emerald. Meaning you can get all emeralds as early as THE FIRST ACT OF EMERALD HILL ZONE.
And it makes me feel like that Mania only having STK excluding dlc and nobody saying crap about that was a stinkin joke.
Tell me you think its only bad if Sega doesnt do it without telling you think its only bad if Sega doesnt do it
You could always get them all on act 1, just go between 2 checkpoints repeatedly
@@arzfan29
No you couldn't. On the original Genesis version at least, there's only three checkpoints in Act 1 and four checkpoints in Act 2 to get all 7 emeralds by the end of Emerald Hill. This version messes it up because the reset has an oversight of wiping checkpoints even though they may have already been hit by the player but keeps any emeralds collected, so you can farm more than 3 emeralds in Act 1 which you're not supposed to do.
@@cullbear55 Actually, EHZ2 has _five_ checkpoints. So not only can you easily get all seven before you even reach Chemical Plant, you've actually got room to fail one of them and still get it done.
Granted, Sonic 3 isn't much better, considering how, with Sonic and Tails, you can get all 7 Chaos Emeralds before you're finished with Hydrocity Act 2, and all seven Super Emeralds before you've even left Mushroom Hill. Still, I suppose it's better than 1 and CD where you only get _one chance per Act._
If its anything like the mess Colors Ultimate was, then I'm guessing SEGA was only willing to shell out the bare minimum to port the mobile versions of the game to pc and consoles and add in a few pretty cutscenes.
Just seems to be a trend with companies trying to cut corners with remasters here and there
“Losing ice cap is a hard time”

to me sonic origins would've been PERFECT if they used the mania engine for all games in anniversary mode, added knuckles into ALL games, used the OG verions for classic mode, had the same music from s3&k, and added knuckles chaotix. keep all the game modes they have. I wouldve played that sh*t till i died. i knoew it seems like a lot but damn they've had A LOT of time to work on this one. im hoping there can be a small 3d compilation like mario 3d all stars...hopefully containing sonic 3d blast, sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2...i think that'd be the most realistic trio, i would play that sh*t till i die too.

Also, a thing that upsets me the most is the whole "New Playable Characters" and what's depicted in the new animations. Especially since story mode locks you into Sonic & Tails mode.
That’s definitely what annoys me the most too, eventually i found that repeatedly calling Tails to come and carry Sonic was the only way I could get him back on the screen without enduring jump noises the whole level lol
Here's another great Tails glitch in Sonic 2: if you break open a capsule and then make Tails fly, so that he starts to run out of flying energy just as the screen fades to black and the next level begins, his flying sound effect will play in the background for the whole game.

I got to say it feels like Amy was supposed to be playable considering she was on the box art and she was in the final animated cutscene.
Once again it falls to fans to do what Sega don't, just as it was with her absence in Mania.
Yeah same here. It bothers me to no end that she is not playable, despite being represented so much in the collection. The box art, intro and outro video really seem to be hinting that alongside Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, she's playable as well.
You do realize Amy was there cuz of CD right?
And Mania (fan made game) had STK excluding DLC yet you dont say crap about that? Gtho with "Origins bad for not having Amy and Mania good with only STK at launch" bullcrap
Amy really seems to be portrayed in Origins as if she was supposed to be playable, which she isn't and that fact bothers me. The thought of being able to play through these games as Amy sounds really cool, and it would add more value in the collection. For example in the Origins outro cutscene you can see Amy fighting against baddies with her hammer alongside Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. This made it seem like all 4 were playable, but no. It feels like such a tease.

@@mustangmckraken1150 you can still play all these games through emulation on pc or even just downloaded rom hacks which adds more features than any of these games. Just release Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection as a single purchase that people can make on modern systems. And launching it just opens a menu that lets you pick 'Mega Collection Plus' or 'Gems Collection', and then boots up whichever you picked.

Through some cartoonish level of incompetence, this somehow found its way into Sonic Origins, totally destroying the intended tone and pace of the final scene. The animation is so clearly overclocked that I can’t imagine how SEGA didn’t rectify this.
While I’m hopeful that a few patches could iron certain issues out, others seem to be actual choices SEGA made, like removing all of CD’s voice clips and hiding features in the debug menus. Hello, future time traveler! 👍🏻
They also changed one of the best things from the Sonic 2 mobile port. In Air Base Zone you don't die from the 2 launchers after the platform section. You just get hopped to the other platform. In origins though they brought the terrible cheap death back.
Wait really? I wasn't able to die at that section unless u was holding away from the platform
They must have added the airspeed cap back in, then.

I think it's really telling that they removed other versions of the game to force newcomers into this one. Almost like they're admitting this isn't a big enough deal to make you decide to go for it compared to the originals. But toggle options for everything and proper save states should've been included as a bare minimum. Other than that I just think it's a shame it wasn't a physical collection. I thought the initial announcement was such a big deal because it'd be the first physical release in a long time, not JUST because they were releasing Sonic3&K again. And while that's certainly the best version of the game, it's odd they don't let you play them separately like in prior collections. I wonder if that's because of MJ's involvement with Sonic 3's standalone credits.
But hey, Sonic Colors Ultimate didn't even add a toggle for the soundtrack until well-after I 100% completed the game--I didn't even know they added that until recently. So between that and what happened with Mania Plus, I feel good about holding out for a physical release down the line that will fix and address many of the complaints.
what happened with sonic mania plus?
@@mcloughlinguy4127 I'm just referring to how Sonic Mania launched as a digital-only title but eventually got a physical release with bonus content. Sorry if the wording was confusing

@Chainmaster34 all they had to do was port the classics over and not change anything but maybe update the graphics
@TheDoctor DB
Physical releases are incredibly expensive for studios and have even put a few under (this is why Glover 2 never released)
They weren't sure the numbers would justify the cost of a physical release, which is why we didn't get one until down the road. They weren't trying to screw anyone over
Who came back here after the Sonic Origins plus announcement?
I love your sonic videos a lot
Fun fact:
*You can unlock Super Sonic in Sonic 2 in Origins by Emerald Hill ACT 1. Yes.*
Basically, once you hit all the checkpoints and you've obtained all the emeralds for them, you can hit "Restart" in Anniversary Mode and it'll reset the checkpoints whilst retaining your number of emeralds, pretty much allowing you to grind all 7 at the *very start of the game for free* .
💀💀💀💀
You can also do it in the original game by getting a time over
you can do that in original without restarting (there are enough checkpoints in the level)
If you can do that many special stages in a row without going insane.
@@thevioletbee5879 And not just any special stages, Sonic 2 special stages.
I am so glad I already owned CD and set up Sonic Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 A.I.R. before this came out. Those are absolutely the definitive ways to play these games on PC, even if they don't have the convenience of coming in one collection.
There is no point to Origins when these already exist. They should have just payed the makers of those to put them in a bundle, tweaked them to add the boss rush and mirror mode, and called it a day.
@@Schnort Even without those ROM hacks, Sega has already ported over the classic games several times over on multiple devices over the past decade. Hell, the entirety of Sonic 1 can be played in Generations. At this point, it's redundant. Kinda wish they'd start porting over other games besides the Genesis games, like the games on Game Gear, the Advance/Rush series, etc.
@@ajgameguy3674 the goal of origins was to get newcomers from the movie to get interested in older sonic games. I guess it works, but it's a bad first experience.
I wish Chaotix was ported. The sound track was there but not the game? Chaotix needs to be ported so they can change some things like the roulette level select system; keep it the same except you won't repeat a level until all the other ones have been played at least once. This would help with the weird jumping in difficulty.
Just. Give Chaotix what it deserves.
I really need to setup Sonic Forever and 2 Absolute...again (and play the actual Steam port of CD... which I bought like 2 or 3 years ago with a Sonic franchise deal back then, and got a sigh of relief when Sega announced the RIPpironi of the games on Steam 1 month before Origins release because I already had them all).
That does kinda sound mildly disrespectful to Christian Whitehead since he was the one who made the 1, 2, and CD ports on mobile and Origins as well as Mania. Sure, there are as good as official ports can get (a bit higher than usual but still far below the fan’s capabilities), but for those who aren’t really into downloading fangames or aren’t PC or mobile gamers, there was probably some demand for these CH ports to come to mobile, and so, Origins does just that.

You made this joke, and moved on, so subtly.
You earned a like just for making that Hard Times reference.
A bug I hope never gets patched out is in the boss rush. If you lose all your lives, hit no when it asks you to retry, then hit continue on the main menu you will be at the boss that you lost your last life to. Essentially giving you unlimited lives. This was the only way I could beat the boss rush mode for each game.
Well that just seems kind of counterintuitive to what the mode was designed for. Boss rush with unlimited lives just removes the challenge in it.

Isn't it not amazing how a collection from 1997, Sonic Jam, has more room for tweaking the game to how the player wants than a collection from 2022. Like it doesn't rope you into playing it this one way, and ONLY this one way to get all the bells and whistles, as it allowed you to
turn on or off the Spin Dash from Sonic 1
turn off the time limit from Sonic 1-3&K
change the difficulty setting from Easy, Normal (basically the Anniversary mode) or Original (as the game was originally released)
And you mix and match with the various settings to however you want, even while playing in Original. And these things couldn't be added into Origins because...?
Also with the removal of Sonic talking in CD, I can't help but wonder if they're trying to rewrite history.
"Oh, don't you know! Sonic NEVER spoke back then!"
To fit in with what they have with that bad tribute act they try passing off as Sonic from the 90s in Generations and Forces.
God I hate that they keep pushing that "Sonic didn't talk" motif in recent years. The only reason he didn't talk in most of the classic games is because of technical limitations, not because he's a mute. Like in almost every other media of sonic in that era he's talking and wise-cracking all the time with that care-free attitude he's known for.
It made even less sense as Classic tails and Eggman talk non-stop in generations, like how tf does that work? Now you're telling me they're doubling down on this mute classic sonic nonsense by removing his voicelines from CD? What is SEGA smoking?
Man, 1997 really was a good year
@@thegungerbrospodcast7671 I know they wanted Classic Sonic to talk. They considered Jaleel White, but never contacted him. Would have made sense since he was the iconic voice of Classic Sonic overseas. Not so much in Japan, though. And since Classic Sonic never had a voice in Japan as consistent as Jaleel White was overseas, their hands were tied.
They had to either make a call to ask Masato Nishimura to return as Sonic, find a new voice or scrap the idea altogether. I would theorize that was their thought process on why Jaleel White was just a thought.
@@Medachod But here's the thing about the whole generations thing that is so weird, no-one was ever contacted to voice classic sonic including Jaleel White or any of the other Sonic VA's throughout the years, so it seems they didn't plan to give him a voice in the first place.
To back up my statement, Mike Pollock and Colleen voiced both the classic and modern versions of their characters so why didn't they do the same for Roger as well? Like the only real difference between Modern and Classic is their design as they are both 15 years old still so it wouldn't matter lol.
It seems to me that they didn't want to bring back Classic Sonic as Sonic, but instead have him act as the cute and silent little Brother for Modern Sonic which really sucks honestly.
@@Medachod Sonic had a voice in Japan, look at the Sonic Anime OVA
Hoping the patch (or further patches) corrects a lot of this. I have some of my own qualms about it, one of which goes back to the mobile releases. I think those mobile versions are the definitive versions but there are a few hiccups. Being able to get a few hits in as the boss in Green Hill Zone first descends is classic and they shouldn't have taken that away. Also, some of the fly enemies in Aquatic Ruin Zone in Sonic 2 fly onto the screen a bit early.
I still like how this compilation gave us a newly remastered version of sonic 3 and knuckles in it along with sonic cd and sonic 1 and 2
I don't get how Sega manages to fail at everything. You'd think after getting poor reception on 5 unfinished games in a row, they might try harder to make something beyond mediocre.

SEGA fired the only people who have made a good Sonic game in a long time. Great job!
I'm willing to say Sega either doesn't like Genesis/32X/Game Gear Sonic titles, and prefers 3d Sonic, or they dislike others producing successful Sonic titles reminiscent of the Genesis/Game Gear/32X titles.
Something that would have boosted the value of this collection tremendously would be if classic mode was actual emulation of the Genesis/Mega Drive classics, also unlocking them in the Genesis/Mega Drive collection they released previously if you didn't already have them. Also, bundling the previous Steam version of CD in as a separate library item you get with it for free. Yeah, the price bump would be annoying, but at least these versions of the games would still be legally accessible, along with all the rom hacks and fan creations such as Sonic 3 AIR that have been made by the community over the years. Them not doing anything even remotely like this feels like a huge middle finger to the fanbase, throwing our fan creations under the bus for a frankly unfinished collection that desperately needs polishing.
I have a suggestion, stop caring about "legally accessible" when it comes to sega because it's clear that they don't wanna make a fair trade and just wanna scam you.

The worst part is always that these games are 30 years old. The thought that any glitches are here is a fucking absurdity. Besides that you can actually activate some settings to make the games more faithful like turning off spindash or patched spikes in Sonic 1, but you have to enter a cheat code. TO MAKE THE CLASSIC MODE WORK, YOU HAVE TO KNOW A CHEAT CODE.
To cover the early Denuvo point, the menu slowdown / memory leak disappeared from Mania when it was removed so that gives credibility to the idea it's what's happening in Origins too.
Since being called out on slowing down gameplay where framerate matters, Denuvo have endeavoured to have "no impact on the paying customer" by having it cause slowdown in the other times (read: menus) instead.
They can endeavour all they want, theres still only one realistic way of not producing such horrendous slowdown, and thats to not use the system theyre using.

To be entirely honest, I was actually looking forward to playing Sonic 3 with versions of the prototype music. Carnival Night especially is a case where I actually _preferred_ the prototype music to the final version. But these adaptations they had Jun Senoue do are just plain worse than the songs in the prototype. Carnival Night, my favorite prototype song, is now my _least_ favorite song in the entire Sonic 3 soundtrack. And it just left me wishing they would've just used the prototype songs as they were.

One thing I never see mentioned is Sonic 3 & Knuckles' new sprites. They actually made new sprites for the game. For example, in the original, Super Sonic shared a few sprites with normal Sonic, just with a yellow color pallet. Here, Super Sonic never reuses normal Sonic's sprites. The new sprites fit the original style so well, most don't even notice them there.
The guys behind the game have acknowledged that there were problems, they even told SEGA the version they submitted was not ready to release, SEGA refused to let them fix it. Headcannon even stated that most of the bugs people are complaining about aren't even the ones they knew about. I'm pretty sure this is happening because Chris Whitehead's team beat the ever living shit out of SEGA when Sonic Mania came out with Forces, and Mania was gold but Forces tanked. Now, they're pissed off and trying to make Headcannon look like shit. SEGA's starting to look worse than Nintendo at this point.
I don’t think it’s got anything to do with spite. It’s just that just like with Colours Ultimate, Sega wanted a Sonic game to drop while the movie’s success was fresh in people’s minds. Expect this to happen again a few months after Sonic 3 drops

Delisting the games separately is the only think I consider unacceptable. I think it goes against what sega has build for the last few years, making sonic and their genesis library as accesible as possible.
I am truly starting to hate the practice of selling retro games exclusively in bundles. Bundles are supposed to be a way of paying less money by buying multiple things at once. Imagine if other mediums worked like that, if you could only buy toy story 2 if you buy all four movies together.
It is bizarre that classic mode runs on the new engines, sega has already developed multiple sega genesis emulatores, they should've been just the roms with save states enabled. I mean if you are not allowing you to mix and match between classic and anniversary, at list they could have offer the true classic experience
I actually like the addition of coins, getting currency by playing retro games and then spending that currency in a store is I think a good risk reward system that can replace lives to some extent.
I hate games replacing lives all together ignoring all the components of the games that contributed to the lives system, like rings, live boxes and lives as a reward for exploration and risks.
