    Keanu gave 80 million dollars to the makeup and special effects people of the 114 million he made from the Matrix sequels. He's obviously not in it for the money, that's probably why he seems pretty down to earth compared to most people in Hollywood.

      Keanu also turned down 20 million to do speed 2 because he didm't like the script. Shit that's balls. He also did Chain Reaction which was a shitty movie because the producers were his lifelong friends and even after the director and co-actors bailed he stayed and finished the film. That's loyalty. Almost killed his action career though.

Because it is very unlikely for hollywood to do brutality, intense, super realistic fight scene, etc that the raid have.. Doesn't mean disrespect but in my opinion whats make Hollywood movies great are because of the CGI, Budget, and all the technologies in it. While Whats make the raid series great are because of its art that's live in it. If you don't agree with me. try to watch John Wicks final action scene then watch the raid 2 final action scene .. hytsugaya1000 I don't think giving a sequel to one of the best series of all time ever turns out the way you want it to. The expectations, or the bar, if you will, is ALWAYS too high, and the nostalgia rush will always make you like the original better, on top of the fact it's hard enough to write a second story with the same characters and embody them in a compelling way that's different, yet as good, if not better, than the first. I hope you see where I'm coming from.
      Not to mention Spike is dead. The story is over.

    The scene in his house and the night club scene were fun, but the rest of the movie was pretty bland. John Wick had no real motivation other than his dog. Alfie Allen, who is a great actor was given nothing to work with other than being your run of the mill young punk. The generic russian villain was generic, and Willem Dafoe was really just there. The headshots just became so repetitive that I didn't even really notice them anymore.
    However, I think this movie deserves a spinoff featuring Ian McShane's character and The Continental. Something about a man running a hotel that acts a refuge for hitmen, mafia members, and other criminals just seems really interesting to me. I would love to see some of the back story to that. How does someone find themselves running that kind of business?

    I respect Chris Stuckmann's opinion on this movie, but from my perspective, John Wick was still essentially your typical "retired ex-hitman comes out of retirement" story arc. I respect Keanu Reeves as an actor, and I agree that the action scenes were well done, but the premise/plot of this movie alone was what brought down the experience for me.
    From what I've seen of the movie in the trailers, I thought the movie was going to do something different in terms of narrative heft and ideas. But sadly, when the plot of the film played itself out as I watched, I was actually disappointed.
    I've seen this type of movie before, and it's getting quite tiresome. I wish directors did something new and original with the action film genre instead of relying on the same cliche beats. Sure, they were some neat little quirks and all, but strip that all away, and what you're left with is your typical generic action movie about a retired hitman wanting revenge.
    If you ask me, Rotten Tomatoes giving this movie an 85% approval rating was a bit too much. It felt more like it deserved a 68% approval rating, or a 70% at best.
    Overall, in my opinion, John Wick may be an entertaining action flick. Keanu Reeves did his thing as the main protagonist, the action was perfectly executed, and the camera work made for some interesting scenes. However, the basic plot of the movie didn't sit too well with me, and it didn't seem like it tried anything new with its material.
    Therefore, on a rating scale of 1 to 10, I give John Wick a solid 6. It's a good action film if you want something mindless and enjoyable, but ultimately, there's nothing spectacular or innovative about it that makes it stand up above its other similar contemporaries.

      @wadewilson7527 8 лет назад +2

      +The Batman Of Neo-Gotham I get what you are saying. And i respect your opinion on that. And i kinda agree with it. That's like the only thing that bugs me in the movie. Most of it was very predictable and seemed a little washed out. But then again the incredible action scenes and the very good acting makes it up for me personally. Like seriously, this is so well acted. There were no cringy action moments or generic one liner.
      And one thing that kinda stood out for me was that John Wick was so cold and relentless in all his killing. In most of these revenge action movies you get to the point were the protagonist starts to have mercy with the his foes. But he didnt. Which made it at least a little different for me and what i'm used to. And it was of cause all thanks to Reeves acting. Oh and the wrighting as well. I assume.

      The only thing john had that made him human was the wife, then his wife dies so she gives him a dog which represents her, her love, a glimpse of humanity she knew he would need after her death and he is deprived from that as well, so what does he do? instead of being depressed and eventually letting go of the whole thing, he does something. He does the only thing that is left in his life: killing. The assholes stole his humanity, his desire of living and loving. What I saw was a guy hurting, a guy struggling with the loss in the only way he knows best. He was absolutely broken inside and all people see is the fucking dog and the fucking revenge because they killed the fucking dog. This is not about the action, the shooting and the revenge, it is about dealing with loss, it is about the inner struggle that people go through after someone they love dies. This is a very metaphorical movie, I just can´t deal with people not seeing this.

      The Batman Of Neo-Gotham
      You are welcome. If you ever watch the movie again, pay attention to how daisy acts. The dog wants to be in bed with him and wakes him up with kisses. I mean, the woman chose that puppy for a reason, it is not a coincidence the animal is so affectionate. This is just one of the clues the movie gives you and that is why it wasn´t generic. You can clearly see the stages of grief in the movie and at the end when he takes another dog, you know he is not giving up on life despite being alone and broken inside. I think that is a good message for people who are going through depression and loss.

    • @LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor
      @LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor 8 лет назад +1

    100% agree this is a great action movie. How was Edge of tomorrow a financial disappointment. It made over 100 mill in North America and 369 mill worldwide.

    • @peteraguilar7600
      @peteraguilar7600 9 лет назад +4

      There is a difference between being a "disappointment" and losing money. Edge of Tomorrow did make roughly $369M worldwide. First, you have to take off 1/3 of that amount (movie theaters worldwide keep approximately 33% of the ticket sales), so that means that the studio got back about $247M. Next step, the movie had a production budget of approximately $178M so now we need to add all the marketing budget. Being a bigger release that tends to be between $15-25M generally, so lets split the difference and say there was $20M spent in marketing. So that means the studio spent around $198M total on the movie and had sales of $247M. So the studio made only about $49M in profit. That is why most people, including myself, consider the movie a financial disappointment: it was a really good movie that made a smaller profit than it should have because 1) They changed the original awesome "All You Need Is Kill" title to a more generic-sounding title and 2) the trailer that was released was just horrible and did not give us an accurate idea of how good the movie would ultimately turn out to be.

  • @freddoproductions

    Gotta admit I think it's great up until about 40-50 minutes in. The whole build up is good, and the most iconic scene I think is the funeral, the graves and city skyblocks blend so well and it's really quite a dystopian looking image as if it was right out of Bladerunner 2049 or something. However once the action has been going on for a while it gets a little tiring and after seeing him dispatch so many guys completely mercilessly it looses it's tension and suspense because he seems to basically be a superhero and I knew that he would get out of every situation just fine. Also I'm not too keen on the character, in films like the Equalizer the protagonist is a hero, a guy who's out for good yet in this he's an ex-hitman, and I just feel like that he maybe deserves what is happening to him; and therefore I wasn't too engaged with it. I prefer Speed and Point Break, and I do think the action is very slick. Hats off to Keanu Reeves for doing his own stunts too. I guess it just is what it is, and it's just not my thing particularly.

    I couldn't agree with Stuckmann more on this one.
    This movie was surprisingly well done especially considering this is David Leitch and Chad Stahelski directorial debut. The tone strikes a strong balance between dark comedy and drama without being distracting. The world creation is subtle and intriguing and every set is perfectly matched with a soundtrack I can't help but put on repeat every time I leave home.
    Leitch and Stahelski's stunt background serves them well with squeaky clean action choreography devoid of shaky cam and all performed by Keanu Reeves himself. This was a refreshing change of pace after having to endure so many seizure inducing blur fests in recent years. The acting is solid and could quite possibly be Keanu's best.
    Definitely picking this one up on Blu-Ray when it becomes available and highly anticipating a continuation of the series.

    SPOILERS:
    I almost always seem to have the same taste in films as you, Chris. We both picked Prisoners as the best film of last year, and almost universally our tastes align. But when it comes to "John Wick" ugh. I do not understand for a minute how this is getting such great reviews. First of all, they kill a puppy, which is massively lazy screenwriting, and in this case, the one and only plot motivation in the entire film. The rest of the film is non-stop video game violence porn. John Wick puts on a suit and shoots people in the head for the remaining duration of the film. He must have killed 100 people. And it gets mind-numbing after about 10 minutes. You were right, the nightclub scene is very well shot, but okay, it might as well be a music video without any semblance of plot, or character, or motivation, or suspense, or vulnerability, or drama. Why was Willem Dafoe in this movie? Carrot Top could have played that thin part just as well.
    This movie, like Kick-Ass, is just about the worst kind of film being made right now. Non-stop gratuitous violence played as popcorn comic book fun time entertainment, with zero stakes, zero ramifications, and zero consideration for the power of a bullet.

    No one would have been surprised if this was a direct to video release, now its a pretty popular franchise that almost everyone I know has seen

    I have one question about this movie. I have seen The Raid 1 & 2 and I am worried that I will not look at many other action movies in the same way because of that. Has anyone who has seen The Raid 1 & 2 seen this and if so what did you think? Did The Raid movies overshadow this one? Thanks

    • @hasan.f
      @hasan.f 10 лет назад +13

      Eric Carter I have watched both movies. After that I never look action movie in the same way. Yes, The Raid overshadows every movie that contains fight scenes.

    • @hasan.f

      You should watch both the raid 1 and 2 btw

      fuad hasan As I said in my comment I have seen The Raid 1 and 2. Both of them are awesome but I am just asking will I not enjoy John Wick as much because I have experienced the really fast action that is in The Raid?

      @hasan.f 10 лет назад

      Eric Carter sorry, I didn't see that lol. John Wick looks awesome though. Gotta watch it when it's out

      fuad hasan I am kind of deciding that right now. Cinema tickets are not as cheap as they used to be unfortunately so you need to make sure that you are buying a ticket for a movie that you will enjoy.

    I Really disagree. I thought this film was a another generic action movie. Keanu Reeves gave a wooden performance in my opinion, but maybe i just don't understand his acting.
    He seems to be playing the same character over and over again, since the matrix.
    I give it a C+

      im totally blown away even how much praise this movie gets, sure its fun entertainment, but its a silly simple very forgetable action flick in an expensive looking suit and despite that it cant hide indeed reefves is just a limited actor

    • @thebigbadone1234
      @thebigbadone1234 9 лет назад +1

      whether his acting was wooden or not, the rest if what the film has to offer is great, the action is great and you can actually see what's going on, the whole world that it's setting up and the backstory to the hotel could make for a very good sequel

      @@Baker19911nothing special, alot of just dead action and shooting without any story.
      It's Okay if you don't have anything else to watch instead.
      Or watch Taken instead, much better film with heart in it aswell

    I like that John Wick sets up a universe in which many movies could be based around. They could make sequels, prequels, or just leave the movie as it is. They could also have different characters be stars and be in the same universe as John Wick.

    I haven't seen John Wick yet, but when Chris Stuckmann said it might be Keanu Reeves best performance, that's kind of a bold statement. Keanu Reeves has made some great movies during his career, but he's been on a slump the last 5 years or so. I'm glad Keanu Reeves is still making good action movies. Good review Chris, I'm intrigued to see John Wick.

    Hey Chris, just finished John Wick. One of your gripes about movies along with character development has always been back story. I'm in your camp as well because you need at least a little for character motivation at some point. I started laughing about 15 minutes in because I realized there was none. LITERALLY! LOL.. No flash back sequence to whom this person was and earned his nickname, No current setting in which he discusses it in much detail for us to have some insight. It's a "I'm sad, now I'm pissed" revenge film. The script was as basic as you can get and really didn't need much direction other than the great fight scenes.
    SPOILER ALERT! Tell me if I missed something here from the perspective of watching it from the beginning not knowing anything about the movie. Man loses wife from natural causes, wife gives him a puppy after she passes, Russians steal his car and kill his dog, then he goes on a epic killing spree. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but that's the summarized version. I would think after watching most of your reviews over the years that you would be all over the gaps in this movie. Is it a fun movie? Hell Yeah!, is the acting good? Yes, is it a great role and come back for K. Reeves? Hell yeah! But, this is a movie with a lot of issues in my opinion. So, my question is, you say in the review it's the perfect reason for him to go off like he does??? Really??? I wasn't totally sold on that. I can certainly understand the emotion behind this character, but this movie would have been so much better with even a spoon full of back story to allow us to get in his head and heart so we have proper motivation to stand up and cheer for this guy.
    Summed up, Bad guy goes on epic killing spree to kill other bad guys. A? My humble opinion, Solid B+. Love to see you respond to this Chris. It's so ultra rare to have you interact with us. It's like a bigfoot sighting at this point! LOL.

      It's not overrated the movie wasn't even a box office hit. Besides the word overrated is way to used nowadays, just because you hear some people like something people just go and say it's overrated. It didn't work for you but it's not an overrated movie.
