I loved Heat but I think this one might be even better, because you can really feel how Vincent is the psychopath that will bring the worst and the best in Max. and that scene when you think finally someone understands max and is going to help him out of this horrible night... a real classic on my humble opinion, so sadly underrated...love the show!
I saw this when it came out and was blown away! I left the theater with "that feeling" - the feeling I get when I've just seen a film that has a profound effect on me . A film that has moved me or angered me or changed me or energized me or terrified me or in some way had a real, physical impact on me. The way art can effect me. Collateral, American Beauty, Spotlight. Mad Max Thunder Rod, The Sixth Sense are a few examples of this. After movies like these, I leave the theater wide eyed and feeling like just saw something special and I need a moment to either adjust back to the real world after being so fully immersed in this other universe or to soak in the immensity or intensity of what I was just a part of. I felt that with this film but it was lost on my date who thought it was "Okay" and none of my friends or family had seen it so I never really talked about it again. Your review has excited and encouraged me to see it again.
Don't you hate it when that happens? You just saw some piece of art that moved you in some way and when asking for feedback of your couple, he/ahe says "it was k". Like that. Like, meh. Happens the same to me with my girlfriend sometimes. Not everyone can be an art lover but damn.
Chris, I swear, your taste in movies and mine are matched to a T; this is one of my all time favorite movies! I really enjoy your reviews because I know I can trust them!
I went into Collateral thinking it’d be an alright, fun action movie. I saw Heat which was great but I still wasn’t convinced. But now that I just watched Collateral, it’s amazing, one of my favourite action movies of all time.
I went to the movies to see this film when it came out and that scene you were talking about with the briefcase, after that happened, the whole theater erupted in cheers. Standing ovation, which I've never seen happen in a theater since then. Truly underrated.
Collateral has been one of my favourite movies since it came out and that will never change. In my eyes, it's perfect. Self-contained, thematically deep, but with a level of visceral action that makes it easily accessible and enjoyable to those looking for more than just drama.
Oh man, I was totally hoping for a little skit, or scene reenactment at the beginning! I need some competition in the _"dress up and pretend to be inside the movies"_ game :-) Always cool to hear folks share their unbridled and passionate thoughts on their favorite films - always enjoyed this one too myself - the visuals / nighttime photography is really its standout highlight, for sure. Cruise' Vincent has always been a memorable villain. Great picture. Thanks for the review, as always.
On the final shootout: Vincent practiced what he preached. Improvise & adapt. Except he is a highly trained shooter, and stuck to his muscle memory of shooting at center mass. (The Mozambique Drill is also a trademark of Michael Mann's films.) Vincent hit center mass on the subway door. Max was randomly shooting and a few shots broke through the window. One could say that Max came out "luckier" in that unpredictable engagement. Chance favors the prepared mind.
I felt like the general mood and nightlife of this film was a character in itself. Really well introduced with the easy listening music. the whole vibe is nostalgic in the background.
Collateral is my favourite movie of all time the way it made me feel the rush and excitement was nothing i ever experienced! I got to watch it at the cinema and it was amazing. Tom Cruise was exceptional he really captured his character so well! Mann really made something unique, ive never seen or i think will see anything remotely close to Collateral. I actually shed a tear at the end of this film everytime i watch it. Its just brilliant! It was a night that i didnt want to end. 5 stars.
Holy crap, I thought I was the only person who counted Collateral as one of my favorite movies. It's great from start to finish and has so many memorable scenes....Max and the lawyer's first meeting, Max's first meeting with Vincent, Vincent forcing Max to move the body of his first kill, "Yo homie, is that my briefcase?", the jazz man, Max tossing the briefcase onto the freeway, Max posing as Vincent and the "Black Peter" speech (GREAT scene), the Japanese nightclub scene, Max wrecking the car (my favorite)......I just now realized how much this movie has informed my own creative work. I fortunately saw this in theaters and, of course, bought the DVD as soon as it was available. I can't believe how underrated and unremembered such a great movie is.
Ehhh for all you know Max is on the news as a bad guy armed and dangerous so he could get shot at first sight. Everyone that knows the truth is dead by that point and cops are surrounding the sight. Not that great of an ending lots of lose ends like Annie still has a contract on her head til the trial could be dirty cops that try to kill her while in custody, did Vincent really die he was never in a body bag with the police, is Max gonna get fired and have no income now, like I said lots of lose ends. The rest is top notch though
Before the pandemic, I had only seen Collateral once, in the theater when it came out in 04. Thanks to stumbling on your review, I took the chance to revisit it in 2020 and fell in love with it for the first time, 16 years later. Heat has been one of my favorite movies since 1997, and I think I’ll always prefer it out of the two, but now by just the slimmest of margins. Thanks for putting the idea of re-watching this movie in my head. It’s absolutely fantastic
A great review and a great suit to boot. Collateral is one of the greatest movies of the last twenty years, and it is, sadly, Michael Mann's last great film to date. The film is an exercise of how style and substance an co exist and work together to create a masterpiece. The look of the film is superb, early HD grainy cinematography that gives the film a depressing palate, and the handheld camerawork that gives the film a sense of urgency. The set pieces are phenomenal, at the beginning there is hardly any action and what we get is contained, elegant and brief shoot outs that leave a mark on your memory that most films wish it can do. The sound should also be mentioned, for example the "Yo Hommy" scene you mentioned, the five gun shots followed by another gun shot a second or two later are a punch to the senses. The soundtrack itself was immersive, and helped the film become more like a journey rather than a cinematic experience. Audioslade, Tom Rotherick, and Groove Armada all have a piece or two on the soundtrack, and the songs contribute to the mood and feel of the film, rather than being just background noise. Take for example Hands of Time which is played throughout the scene when Max drives Annie to her workplace. This could have easily been a sappy romantic moment, instead it's a discussion between two adults about professionalism that is relatable. In fact professionalism is a major theme of the film, not only is it a topic for Max and Annie but it is also a major part of Vincent's life. Just look at the club shootout, that final target, Vincent gets a head shot and he simply turn around and walks away calmly throughtout the screaming patrons. And the quote near the end; "I do this for a living" a man on the edge, and a man trying to keep his cool disconnected outlook on like intact. Performance wise; it is a career best for all the main cast, with Cruise on top form. Vincent is a sociopath, who is starting to lose his grip on his job. Just look at the scene between him and Daniel. An emotional heartbreaking scene. That for a brief second displays Vincent's loss Daniel only appears in his film for a few minutes, and you already feel something for this man and his plight. All the main characters in this film have depth and complexity. Collateral was released in the summer of 2004, which for me was my last great summer. Not only did I finish school and took a gap year before going to uni, but that summer played host to two films that changed the outlook for action films; Collateral and The Bourne Supremacy. Two films that over ten years later are still highly thought of, with the latter being copied to death.
I know this movie came out way later BUT i like this one too and it's definitely inspired by Collateral. Meeting Evil! Staring: Samuel L. Jackson, Luke Wilson, & Leslie Bibb. I mean seriously it's very similar to Collateral. Samuel L. Jackson plays a version of Tom Cruise character (the character is just as good to me). Luke is a version of Jamie Fox character (not as good but he's okay) There's even a cop following the story on the hunt for Sam's character and everything. But there's differences as well. Like none of the cops believing Sams character even exist because he's so good at his job it all looks like Luke's character did it. And the story focuses on Luke's character's wife a little. And more, like some sup plots about his wife cheating and stuff but overall it's a fantastic film. not quite as good as collateral but to me a good second.
Thank you Chris! I subscribed about a month ago and day after day i go through all your reviews of all my favorite movies and get to know new ones i havent watched yet and always feel like i have a great chat with a friend. Your charisma and delivery is really something. You have a friendly persona, self irony and pretty much everything you say is on point. Thank you for your work.
Here's a thought... You look like Tom Cruise, Jeremy Jahns looks like Keanu Reeves and I can't stop thinking about the two night club fight scenes (Collateral and John Wick). I don't know if you catch my drift but it would be a great fun service if you guys put your petty grievances aside, got together and... well you know how to direct, I don't have to tell you what happens next.
Brabbel93 No such thing. They just live far apart. They have done collabs in the past. Mr. Yagami is trying to create controversy where there is none. Very true to his character name...
Chris, no lie man, I seen that collateral was coming TNT a few days ago, so I DVR'd it. The other day while I sat down to watch it, I pulled out my phone to check my Google+ feed and seen you had just done a review on it. I was HOLY CRAP that's awesome! To anyone that hasn't seen it, seriously, check it out.
I saw this one in the theater, and at the time I had never seen a Michael Mann movie. I remember it being simply one of the coolest, as in vibe, movies I'd ever seen. The atmosphere, the references to jazz, Vincent's professionalism, it all felt super ~cool.~
I felt like Vicent somehow didnt want to kill max because he feels like even he is as lonely as vincent, max has dreams for future and he is so positive and consistant to fulfill his dreams where as vincent himself being so, perfect in his imperfection has no clue where his life was going, so he is even shown trying to push max in his own way to live his life, call the girl, make big moves, dont wait for perfect timing as there is no such thing as perfect timing. Vincent somehow wants in his heart for max to have a life that he never had. I felt the battle btw this professional mind of vincent reminding him to kill max when the time comes and his lonely heart trying to search a friend in Max so that he doesnt have to kill him too, Whereas max is scared and his moral values are making him hate vincent but he also some how connects to him as he is as lonely as vincent is. I think that wolf scene is a proof that is showing us that these two characters are lonely wolf trying to survive in there own ways in this big jungle of society where they both have their own ideology for life, Vincent feels like no one cares if anyone dies, while max feels like everyone deserves to live. I felt Vincent's every emotion only becuase it was Tom Cruise playing it. Love Tom Cruise forever. 💖
I finally got to watching this movie. I was REALLY impressed. Super happy with the ending, which in movies like this, is quite often the weak point. Characterization on POINT. Jamie Foxx was incredible, and I was rooting for him so hard. A lot of really great actors and performances. Chris, your review is spot-on. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
(I think this is my first ever youtube comment) I'm a huge fan of your reviews and your analysis and love for cinema in general. just the right amount of being clever while simultaneously having the ability to entertain me. alot. your collateral review proofed that once again. I fucking love this movie. where can we see more of the Stuckmann shorts /films ?
Come up on the advertised "play next" options. I've been watching your stuff for about a year now and the way you talk about the scenes, while not giving anything away, just made me want to watch it again. Great movie indeed.
Great review for a fantastic movie. I saw it in theaters and loved it. Mann's movies have such an incredible understanding of the night time city vibe, and I just don't see other directors capturing it the way he does. So much to dig about this movie...from the brilliant Miles Davis scene to no less than Javier Bardem as the gangster. The moment with the coyotes is maybe the most haunting thing in the film. So unexpected and profound. Without spoiling anything, Collateral also features one of my favorite "No! Not him!" shock death scenes. The way it's so abrupt and the film doesn't slow down for a second to make a big deal about it.
Somewhere is written the entire bio of Vincent written by Mann. His youth, his time in the military and his work in the "private sector". Even where he lived at the time of the night when this story takes place. Mann said in the commentary that Vincent actually lived in Thailand, he even said that Vincent's suit was tailored there. Awesome detail.
So cool to hear your take on this. Been watching your reviews a lot lately. Never been very educated in film, but this movie has been my favorite since I was like 13! Maybe I have good taste, Michael is the Mann
Yes, Yes, Yes! I totally agree with you. This movie blew me away. It was like a graphic novel coming to life! I am still hoping for a part two, because you know he somehow survived that shooting at the end.
Hey Chris this is the very first time I'm commenting on your review. First I'm so that Collateral got an A+. Collateral is one of my all time top 10 movies. The best part of this movie is its style. Chris, I swear, your taste in movies and mine are matched to a T; this is one of my all time favorite movies! I really enjoy your reviews because I know I can trust them!
Good fucking movie
I need some competition in the _"dress up and pretend to be inside the movies"_ game :-)
Always cool to hear folks share their unbridled and passionate thoughts on their favorite films - always enjoyed this one too myself - the visuals / nighttime photography is really its standout highlight, for sure. Cruise' Vincent has always been a memorable villain. Great picture. Thanks for the review, as always.
One of Tom's best movie. I wish it was nominated for OSCARS, he was brilliant in it. Hope he will win Academy Award one day.
5 stars.
Collateral is also one of my all time favorite movies.
The resemblance is uncanny!
Holy F....Chris "Vincent" Stuckmann. That thumbnail made me think you had him as a guest in your review.
Serious props,man.X_X

This movie was phenomenal. Loved it.
the ending was great honestly
are you kidding me? that ending was trash.
@@romahnae no. The ending was great!
Agreed. Absolutely love the ending.

I'm so glad you mentioned the soundtrack of this movie, it's indeed absolutely brilliant! One of my favorite movies of all time as well, for sure!
Even when they go to visit Max's mother....
You can see the favorite son and jealous son aspect.
Michael Mann always has the best soundtracks in his films.
Fun fact: Collateral is one of Chris' favorite movies.
Love this film so much. And you bet your ass it deserves an A+
Michael Mann is a genius! Great review!

CLIMAX of the movie! So great!
This was such a crazy film. It’s great when the guy who usually plays good guys flips the switch and goes dark
When I saw Collateral, I also remember this warm feeling overtaking my body. But then I went to the bathroom and I lost it.
Your intro truly helps me appreciate Tom's skills all the more..!
Hey, if JeremyJahns could dress up as Solid Snake for his "MGS3" review, then I don't mind Chirs dressing up for this review!!
Why would he dress up as solid snake for an MGS3 review?

Collateral is one of my favorite road movies. YES it's a road movie!! Think about it!!
Tom deserved a nomination and a Golden Globe for the role he did. Absolutely tom cruise's finest work.
What grieveances?
They know what I'm talking about.
Brabbel93 No such thing. They just live far apart. They have done collabs in the past. Mr. Yagami is trying to create controversy where there is none. Very true to his character name...
Light Yagami Do you think Chris should review Death Note? I do
Fine, let it happen.
Sooo horribly true about Mark Ruffalo. I just saw him in "Begin Again" and loved his performance.
Just finished watching this and I can see how it's a favorite of yours! Would like to see more Cruise villain roles for sure!
Cruise's finest work IMO.
There was also Javier bardem in this movie
One of my favorite movies
HOLY SHIT LOL I JUST SAW THE BRIEFCASE SCENE LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Jamie Fox as supporting actor???
WTF???!!!
Chris you actually kind of look like Tom Cruise from the movie.
(I think this is my first ever youtube comment)
I'm a huge fan of your reviews and your analysis and love for cinema in general. just the right amount of being clever while simultaneously having the ability to entertain me. alot. your collateral review proofed that once again. I fucking love this movie.
where can we see more of the Stuckmann shorts /films ?
Come up on the advertised "play next" options. I've been watching your stuff for about a year now and the way you talk about the scenes, while not giving anything away, just made me want to watch it again. Great movie indeed.
I love watching typically heroic actors turn heel for film's. I think the best is Henry Fonda in Once Apon A Time In The West.
Chris, you look awesome!!
Awesome detail.
great movie, but HEAT is the Magnum FUCKING Opus of Michael Mann, man
So cool to hear your take on this. Been watching your reviews a lot lately. Never been very educated in film, but this movie has been my favorite since I was like 13! Maybe I have good taste, Michael is the Mann
Originally Russell Crowe was suppose to play Vincent and Adam sander was the pick to play max if you didn't know
One of Tom Cruise's underrated performances for sure. Such a great movie.
hey Chris, ever thought of reviewing Top Gun?
Yes, Yes, Yes! I totally agree with you. This movie blew me away. It was like a graphic novel coming to life! I am still hoping for a part two, because you know he somehow survived that shooting at the end.
LMAO damn Chris that shit made me laugh for a long time. Not a bad impression. You rule man great move and a great review. Epic
Hey Chris this is the very first time I'm commenting on your review. First I'm so that Collateral got an A+. Collateral is one of my all time top 10 movies. The best part of this movie is its style. I mean the cinematography. Atmosphere of the movie is awesome. Music nicely blends with it too. I love the scene where a fox crossing the street. Probably the best Michael Mann movie to date.

I. Must. See. This!
I suggest you check out 'Tommorrow, When the War Began', thats Stuart Beattie's directorial debut feature, its like an Australian 'Red Dawn' but with more fleshed out characters. Even based upon a bestselling Australian book series. I can tell you now, I would've love to have seen sequels to that film then 'I, Frankenstein'.
Up until 0:05 I thought a pretentious suit ad had popped up before the video
