  • Just finished putting this engine back together. I had it apart to replace a piston and cylinder that decided to grab. It’s still leaking water into the sump via the bottom o ring on at least one of the water jackets so it will have to come apart again one day.
    I’ve added an extra spring to the throttle linkage to try and vary the speed. Still needs some refinements I think.

    That is one cool motor

    Darren - Interesting setup you made for adjusting the constant speed flyball governor. The apparent wrong rotation of the water pump and radiator fan is because they have this model rotating in the opposite direction to the original Holt model (as provided by Cole's Power Models, etc).

      Dear Darren - Mine came without the "Holt" insignia on the Radiator tank and only three (3) spare piston rings (what was the material again?). Otherwise it looks perfect. So you filled oil at 6 cc in the crank case and use 40-1 gas/oil mixture at 95 Octane? I have plenty of 110 Octane and will also put about 40/1 2 cycle oil in the petrol. Best regards, Greg

      Hi Gregory, I’m not sure why they made these to run the opposite direction. If you have a look at this video ruclips.net/video/EYxeyfuLW5g/видео.html of Jin’s engine (the maker of these engines) you’ll notice the pump discharge on the correct side. I’ve just put a twist in the belt on mine for now. Maybe one day I’ll have a play with making a new housing or maybe I can modify what I already have? I haven’t looked into it yet. I’ll probably have to make a new impeller as well.
      The Holt lettering I made with some 1mm square brass and machined a groove for the lettering to sit into.
      I only received 3 o rings as well. This engine seized up when I first bought it. I had to replace 1 cylinder and piston and I was sent 4 new o rings.
      With the oil I fill the sump until the oil just touches the bottom of the big ends. I have sealed the covers to try and keep the oil In. (It still manages to leak out everywhere as well as spits out the exhaust. And I put oil in the fuel, I use a low octane fuel.

      There is a mix here, some have come from Stirlingkit and enginediy. Others are casting kits or scratch built. I haven’t built any from scratch but quiet a few of these I’ve had to spend many hours making components and tinkering to get them to run.

    Love the governor or speed adjust. Is that a mod you made or part of these models I haven't seen? Gimme a closeup vid :)

      Hi Thomas, I had to make it. A simple little mod that could have been incorporated into its original design.

    Nice engine. Is this a true gasoline engine with parkplugs or Nitro with glowplugs?

    • @darrenfawcett9912
      @darrenfawcett9912  2 года назад

      Yes, a gasoline engine but I do use some oil in the fuel for lubrication. It is using spark plugs and has an electronic ignition module under the base. Thanks for your comment.

      @@darrenfawcett9912 how do you distribute the sparks over the 4 cylinders? I'm asking as I want to build my own 3 or 4 cylinder Holt-like engine once my 1 single cylinder is finished.

      @@MrXanderjanssen there is 4 magnets mounted on the cam gear and a hall sensor mounted near by. Check out my other videos, I have bigger Holt that uses a distributor, much more authentic.

    I have Vp power mix 25:1 can it be use for that engine?

    Hello, can I run vp power mix, 25:1 for this type of engine?

    • @darrenfawcett9912
      @darrenfawcett9912  2 года назад

      I’m not familiar with VP power mix so I had to google it, VP would be fine for this engine because it is basically a 94 octane fuel premixed with a synthetic oil. I just use 91 octane with a drop of 2 stroke engine oil, much cheaper and readily available. If you’ve got some VP laying around and you want to burn it up then that should be fine. The important thing with these engines is to have that drop of oil in the fuel to help lubricate things.

    How did make the mode for the speed

    • @darrenfawcett9912
      @darrenfawcett9912  2 года назад

      Hi Michael, I had to back off the pressure on the engines original spring so it would drop back to an idle then I added the extra spring that I am able to adjust with the wheel to apply more or less pressure on the governor. I hope I’ve answered your question.
