  • I love this track.
It started back in October with the idea of sampling the heal sound effect from the old flash game DragonFable. That sample acts as the chords through the beginning of the song as well as the outro. The sample itself seems to outline a minor 7 chord, so the melody would always exist in the corresponding minor scale. The track itself starts in B half-sharp minor as well, and it changes keys but always remains 50 cents sharp.
For months, I was trying to wake up early enough before school to catch a glimpse of the sunrise on the Brooklyn Bridge. I would write "6AM" on my hands to remind myself to wake up then, as I wasn't allowed to set alarms that early. I figured witnessing daybreak would lift my spirits enough on any given day to make whatever monotonous treachery I had to endure in school less unbearable. But I never actually managed to do it. I would always wake up for a second at 6 and then fall back asleep. The closest I had gotten was getting there an hour late, which was nice, but not what I wanted. It was virtually impossible for me to wake up then, unless I gained enough willpower.
From 2:11 to 3:32, the melody and chords are direct quotes from my track "Sharper," which I released a year and 3 days ago. I felt that the music from that song could also be appreciated in the context of this song. I was inspired to pull this move mostly because of Toby Fox, who's known for quoting his own music within his own songs (leitmotif).
The image is from the Freedom Tunnel, a modern museum of graffiti that exists in an active Amtrak tunnel. Every handful of yards exists these openings into the outside, which let light pour in. I took that picture without realizing what would be displayed, as the lens flare or the vibrant hues of purple and blue emanating from the opening obviously weren't visible in real life.
The outro contains a beat switch that was inspired in part by Frank Ocean's "Nights". In that song, the initial beat is slower and the new beat is faster, whereas in this song it is the opposite. However, the similarity lies in the transition from an active, more present beat, into a more minimalistic, less active beat. The outro features the DragonFable sample again, as the melody outlines ascending minor 11 chords through arpeggiated and swung inversions.
Some may say this is silly, infantile, and lacking in any true significance, but hear me out. There exists a melee weapon in Terraria known as Daybreak. The most powerful prefix it can have is "Godly". The best prefix a ranged weapon can have is "Unreal". Non-ranged weapons can't have ranged prefixes. It is virtually impossible for an Unreal Daybreak to exist in Terraria, unless it's hacked in.
The mastering process was difficult. The track is quieter than I'd like it to be, and every time I tried to bring up the total decibel input to match the volume of reference tracks, the track would distort. There exists some unwanted distortion at various points in the track now, but it's mostly fine. However, hearing the song on Apple Music frustrated me as due to their loudness normalization feature, they distorted the song much more than I expected, forcing me to take it down and resubmit a less abrasive master. The process of mastering is so arduous and soul-draining, it made the final two days of working on this project extremely frustrating.
Forget all of what I said regarding the meaning behind the name "Unreal Daybreak". The real explanation is that I titled it "daybreak" in like November because it was a cool sounding word that started with "D", as the track had previously been called "dragonfable". For a while, that was the title, until I realized how generic that would be considering how many other things are called "daybreak". So I wanted to add something to the title to differentiate it, and I thought of calling it "False Daybreak," but didn't like the sound of that, so I looked up synonyms for false to jog my brain and I landed on unreal. That's all there is to it. I worked backward from my conclusion to find meaning where there was none.
I listened to so many versions of this track for the past 9 months that I'm genuinely sick of it. Hearing it reminds me of the countless hours I'd spend idle at my desk, staring at Ableton not knowing how to progress with it. Throughout April, I made no progress on it whatsoever, which worried me to the point of questioning whether I still had the ability to compose.
Listening to this frustrates me because I fear that I lack the ability to ever step outside of making something with a "video game" vibe. I would embrace this style fully if it didn't seem to pigeonhole me in the way that it does. I want to be more.
    I hate this track.
(adding some algorithm bullshit that might help: artcore, artcore music, artcore electronic music, artcoresong, artcore songs, artcoremusic, art core music, artcore ableton, how to make artcore, artcore music genre,)

Thank you man, and I’ve gotta also thank you for putting me onto Vital a couple months back, as that plugin did so much work in this track and I wouldn’t have used it if you didn’t tell me bout it

I’ve been binge listening your songs and it’s wild how such raw talent has been under my nose this entire time. Your music is comparable in quality with stuff made out of a million dollar studio; you couldn’t tell this was made by person not even in their 20s. Especially love how your songs have deeper meanings and are a gateway to your psych, as that’s what music does best and you utilize it so beautifully. Your channel says “you do music sometimes”, but I sincerely feel it should and can be more than a hobby. Can’t wait to see where your talents take you, and can’t wait to say that I knew Valkron in high school.
