You said the cables are Stainless steel with a plastic coating inside of that plastic sleeve that leads to the steering lever. With the plastic on plastic friction, I wonder if putting some powdered graphite inside the sleeve would help. Just a thought.
It’s been 5 months. How did the fix go? Any issues since? I snapped a rudder cable again today. This will be my fourth replacement in one year. Beyond frustrated.
Fix is working out pretty well, I have snapped a cable also. Replaced it with a stainless bike cable . Got 10 of them for $11 on amazon. The cable from Amazon does not have the rubber coating on it. This frees up the cable even more . Steering works even better with the new cable.
@@scarkilla replacing the cable seems to be the trick. Just go with a noncoated stainless steel cable. I have not had one break yet. I am about to make a video of replacing the cables in my wife's Kayak.
I have a LostCreek, same manufacturer. Some people have replaced their steering mechanism with another brand like FeelFrees 8ball system. My rudder was off and steering was disconnected when I bought it because the previous owner had a MinnKota mounted out to the side off the back on a 2x4, which I removed because I want to use the pedals. I can't figure out how the rudder deployment ropes attach to the rudder. I see they go through the two holes on the rudder between the fins where the steering cables attach. But from there, I'm assuming one goes up and over and the other goes in the opposite direction. Again Boewal Design offers no directions or pics. And it appears they go into the three holes in the rudder. I've tried that but can't get it to work properly, just barely. Also, is there a spring in the wheel/head of the rudder? Boreal Design, which has the world's worst customer service, had a " rudder spring" I believe it was, so I ordered it, hoping it would help. But again, if it's supposed to be in there, I can't figure out how. Any pics/videos, descriptions/explanations that you're willing to provwould be appreciated. I asked another utuber and LostCreek owner, but he didn't help much as he had also had the same steering issues as you/I and had fixed and replaced his. I'm planning on rerouting my cables lower out the back as you did and also considering running them down inside along the side instead of under the seat to avoid the twists and turns.
One time with a coated Cable. I had the cables crossing each other. Making them rub. I also grease the cables for less friction. Your rudder control has a hole in it . That is for you to keep it lubed up. Use grease, WD-40 anything is better than nothing. But most importantly make sure those cables don't cris-cross each other.
How do you keep the white tubes that the steel steering cables go inside of from moving in and out of the new holes that you drilled? I tried this exact same fix today but it didn't work. Everytime I turn the handle left or right all that ended up happening was that it would pull the white tubes back into the hull of that kayak. Did you end up securing the white tubes onto the hull of the kayak on the inside so they wouldn't get pulled everytime you turn the handle?
Yes I used the preexisting tube claps that are already installed inside the kayak. I also used marine grade silicone on the inside and outside of the holes where the tube comes out.
Did you ever have any issues with the rudder going up and down from the pull strings? Mine is really hard to pull the rope to make the rudder up and down.
We just went a week to the Beach and left are Kayaks in the sand when we were not using them. The sand locked up our steering and ruder deployment. They both worked fine on day one. I know I am going to have to take them apart and clean them really well. Then they should start working well again......I hope
@@canam2436 I did fix that issue. The tubing they are using is causing resistance with the rope and making it real difficult to pull the rope. I pulled out that black tubing they are using for the rudder, went to Lowes and found a pvc pipe that is the same size. I believe it was a 1/4 inch pvc pipe. I put that in, put the rope through that pvc and worked really well. It was like $2 for each piece of pvc.
@@TROPHY-HUSBAND I ended up purchasing the newly designed steering they made for these kayaks. It was $100 Canadian dollars which was like $70 US dollars. Then I finally was able to speak with the person working for that kayak company. They reimbursed me for that part because I told them the part poorly designed. I installed the newly designed steering control, made sure it worked and sold it. The new steering did work though perfect. I just didn't like that it was really difficult to reach anyone from that company so I sold it.
Great video, love the cat too 🎣👍😊😻

Rework is the story of life...seems like after thoughts of design makes the world improve
Also makes you a non repeat Customer.
@@TROPHY-HUSBAND Ya even a first time for a peddle drive kayak. I'm looking but I sure as heck don't want to fool with a brand new kayak cable crap...

@@TROPHY-HUSBAND Good tip! I appreciate that.
I just got one from my grandpa he doesn't like the steering and is selling it to me cheap.. thanks for the tips 😄 really appreciate it!
@@scarkilla The steering system is really the only downside. Good luck! I do enjoy mine...other than that.

My cable has snapped\frayed 7 times in the rudder handle box. Does it with either coated or uncoated wire. Do you have that problem?

Why didn’t you just raise the rudder height like I did. Works perfectly and no extra holes in the yak.
Do you have a video of you doing this? So I know what you are talking about.
@@TROPHY-HUSBAND rudder is supposed to sit on top of the bracket I think, you have it under the bracket. I think that's what he is referring to.

I have had the cable get stuck a few times, but it was more my mistake. No real issues with that.
Yeah Esteban my rudder is VERY difficult to get it up and down…only real issue I have with this kayak is the rudder
