More of an Avengers vibe with the eccentric very English hero and his girl sidekick assisting the intelligence services in coping with bizarre adversaries in the English countryside. Pertwee had intelligence connections which I wouldn't be surprised to hear lasted his whole life in much the same way the CIA have assets in Hollywood and the media.
The fact that this was almost totally on location and on film makes it seem so modern and ahead of it's time, really wouldn't be out of place in the revived series
Captain Legs: " really wouldn't be out of place in the revived series" It WOULD be out of place in the revived series, because this is actually GOOD...
Yes it would be out of place. It has no woke, SJW to it. It is not the GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRL Doctor. The companion is not above the Doctor. This isn't crap New Who.
Spearhead From Space was the only Doctor Who story from Jon Pertwee's era to be shown on BBC America, which also was chosen in March,2013,to be seen in the year of the 50th anniversary of the series.
When the Autons zap the guy, it reminds me of the Japanese Sentai series of Gorangers back in 1975. Where the main team use their final attack with a soccer ball and than the monster of the day explodes.
Come on boys , I was 8 years Old and had lot of fights with The stolen generation in Katanning WA , I was a Real Tough 8 year old , but your Right this Scared the Shit out Me to, it 52 Years later and it Starting to get dark , yes it Still scares the shit out of me !!
THE worst tactical mistake you will ever see by a main bad guy in any Dr Who episode. Too soon for a major battle? That lone Auton could have easily killed the senior Unit officers as well as the Doctor. Game over.
Actually he wasn't camping. That was a tent set up by UNIT as part of their mobile HQ. He was a businessman under their protective custody so he was allowed to rest in the tent until the Doctor and co. could get back to him. A UNIT soldier was most likely near the front of the tent...But not the back.
At 2:49, take a close look at the bottom of Ransome's jacket just before "total destruction" occurs. You'll see a small round object, which is the flash charge used to create the effect. Not a lot of people know that...😀
If you look at the shot of the auton just before unit start shooting, you can see a piece of the autons boiler suit is damaged from where they end up firing in the next shot
What about those robots whose face opened up to reveal circuits who took the place of humans. Didn't they take over a village. That was well scary how slowly they moved.
Yep, autons proper creepy. The other episode with the mastee in the plastic factory when they give the suffocating flowers and esemble in the bus when they talk to the master they have a kinda 4 bit voice, different from cybermen and daleks, i wonder how they made that? Jm
It's also the only story which was shot entirely on 16mm film due to a strike at BBC TV Centre which meant they couldn't use the video studios. That certainly gave it a unique feel in Doctor Who.
Still the creepiest version of the Autons ever! I love this story for many reasons. The well realized Autons are one of them.
this series totally freaked me as a kid, still remember now not wanting to go up the stairs to bed at my grans and I was about 6.
😂 awesome tbh this is so terrifying
I saw this as an 8 year old on VHS and it mentally scarred me for years!
Exactly the same for me. Same age too. 6 in 1970.
Yeah, me too
Your family let you watch this at age 6?
Hugh Burden is authentically eerie as Channing. You can sense something"off" about him.
Hugh Burden had such a presence and a very underrated actor .
I love the retro james bond feel of this whole series, and damn john pertwee is awesome
The unit era has such a nice feel to it
Jon Pertwee was friends with the creator of James Bond

The location filming + film _does_ lend this serial a realism that later Pertwee tales - great as they are - lacked...
I recently got round to getting the Bluray of Spearhead and it is truly a joy to watch. Its a real shame its the only story shot completely on film.
Spearhead From Space was the only Doctor Who story from Jon Pertwee's era to be shown on BBC America, which also was chosen in March,2013,to be seen in the year of the 50th anniversary of the series.
The tent scene is possibly the scariest moment in Who history with the possible exception of one or two other scenes from this story.
Imagine that suddenly breaking into your tent in the middle of the night
@@SamuelBlack84 Yeah you'd be buggered in more ways than one.
Note to self: do not go camping in the woods.
Thanks for your Help! This is a great help to me as I don't want to be killed by an Auton.
What about the Blair witch?
2:46 wait that’s not total destruction
2:50 oh
When the Autons zap the guy, it reminds me of the Japanese Sentai series of Gorangers back in 1975. Where the main team use their final attack with a soccer ball and than the monster of the day explodes.
Moral of the story The tents will not save you
Green shy guy Gaming Agreed
I'm sorry. But the autons are the scariest Dr who enemies ever made.
Agreed. And Spearhead from space is one of my favourite Doctor Who stories of all time!
It was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw
Would have been eight when I saw that... it scared the living SHIT out of me...
agreed
Come on boys , I was 8 years
Old and had lot of fights with
The stolen generation in
Katanning WA , I was a Real
Tough 8 year old , but your
Right this Scared the Shit out
Me to, it 52 Years later and it
Starting to get dark , yes it
Still scares the shit out of me !!
Even though you can clearly see it's a guy in a mask, it's still freaky! definitely in the uncanny valley
I remember this fromwhen I was 5. Scared the hell out of me. The Silurians also. That was about a month later.
Autons one of the best monsters by far! :)
Scared the crap out of me as a kid.Like the Cybermen, autons seemed unstoppable.
The Earth Bound Stories were always the Best. The most Scary really.
THE worst tactical mistake you will ever see by a main bad guy in any Dr Who episode. Too soon for a major battle? That lone Auton could have easily killed the senior Unit officers as well as the Doctor. Game over.
Favourite episode ever ❤️
the autons stil gicve me the creeps even today!
If you mean they're creepy, then I agree, I had some nightmares
TOTAL DESTRUCTION!!!
I love how he's camping in a suit lol

Scary as hell.
0.24 Kryten from Red Dwarf before he got upgraded.
If you look at the shot of the auton just before unit start shooting, you can see a piece of the autons boiler suit is damaged from where they end up firing in the next shot
That was because in scene before the old lady shot the Auton with her own gun
Lol stuff like this made me scared of manikins for a few years as a kid
01:21
Auton: ight imma head out.
It was with Pertwee that the franchise came closest to science fiction. Now it's mere fantasy.
I literally climbed behind the couch when I was 7

Simon Bolton ruclips.net/video/Y8Tn7GiBkUo/видео.html
No, they didn't take over the village...but *that* was the twist.
Auton zaps Tony Blair
Doctor who used to be so realistic yet so unrealistic
Yep, autons proper creepy. The other episode with the mastee in the plastic factory when they give the suffocating flowers and esemble in the bus when they talk to the master they have a kinda 4 bit voice, different from cybermen and daleks, i wonder how they made that? Jm

It was written and shot in the '60s but shown in January 1970, so it's both.
Matt Maloney I never knew that. Interesting.

How do you pronounce auton? I say it like OW-TON
erosion271 AU-TON
Aww-taan
AWW-TON
Are you serious?
This scene still bothers me.
omygosh the acting was SO BAD back then 😂
This is rubbish.
The Doctor does not even kiss the companion.
