    Not only was this helpful, since my first time using Resolene has left a very streaky finish on my knife sheath, but also that ending was such a pleasant surprise. Please keep that up.

    Could you use a hair dryer on low to help with the bubbles in the tooling?

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  3 года назад +1

      Most certainly. I have not considered this. Bubbles will occur in the tooling as more coats are applied. Most of the time when tooling is geometric such as basket weave the bubbles are not even noticeable in the finished product, but in a tooling design you will want to eliminate as many as possible. I say go for it, pop them with a blow dryer. Blessings

    I'm very new to leather craft and have only made one belt. I dip died the belt just like you said you did with yours, but I'm noticing some rub off against the top of my pants where the belt lays. Am I supposed to put the finisher on the rough side of the belt also?

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  2 года назад

      Applying sealer to the flesh side of the belt will seal the pores not allowing the leather to breath. Also your belt will not accept any conditioner that you apply in the future. Rub off is generally happens with water based dyes that have poor pigment penatration. I use Fiebings Pro Dye which is alcohol based penetrates much deeper. Weaver Leather Supply has a good video on RUclips about dye penetration and rub off. I've only had one customer complain of rub off. So now with the belt you've already made you may have to seal it. First brush the backside with a horsehair brush to remove all loose pigment . Then you can try burnishing the back side with Gum Trag. Or put it a light coat of neetsfoot on the back then seal it with Resolene after it soaks in for a few days.

    Hey thanks so much for the video? Can I use mink oil instead of resolene?
    Also what do you suggest I dilute my pro oil with? Can I use 50:50 methylated spirits? Thanks and god bless 🙏🏼

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  2 года назад +1

      Mink oil will be beneficial to the leather although if used as a topcoat will not provide a lot of protection. I oil my projects with needtsfoot oil but I let them rest for three or four days to allow the oil to soak in. Then I apply resoline on top of that for protection. That's what I would suggest if you want to use mink oil let it rest for three or four days before applying a top coat. As for cutting the pro dye Feibings has a dye reducer you can buy. The dye is alcohol based so I buy the 90% isopropyl alcohol from Dollar General and cut my dye 50/50. Blessings

    Can this same technique be applied if you use a water based dye and after neatsfoot oil and then the resolene

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  2 года назад

      I can't speak to the water based dye, I use Feibings Pro dye. Although I do mix my Pro dye 50/50 with 91% rubbing alcohol. After 12 hours I rub down with neatsfoot oil. Then I let the project rest for 3-4 days to allow the oil to settle deep in the fibers. Then I apply the topcoat. Blessings

    Do I have to oil up my leather before using my Resolene. Because w/o something?? The Resolene is doing nothing :(

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  2 года назад +1

      Good question. The oil will not penetrate after the resoline is applied. I usually apply my oil and let the project rest for about 3 days before applying the resoline. This allows the oil time to soak in. The opposite is true the resoline will not soak in if the surface is oily.

      The only difference between your belt and my purse, is your belt is Dyed and you’re putting the finish on it in the video. My purse I’m sure has some sort of coding on it, it’s not shiny, I’m not sure if I should sand it??? Or just use the oil like you used and set it away for four days?

      Sorry I can't answer for Saddle Lac, I have not used it. Resoline is a gloss finish. You can control the amount of shine by the number of coats. More Resolene equals more shine.

    Same application with the back of the belt?

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  3 года назад

      No, I only seal the top grain of the leather. I believe sealing both sides will not allow the leather to breathe. Also it will make the belt stiffer. On rare occasions I will seal both sides, like the belt keeper. I form them on a wood form and I want them to hold their shape so I soak them in Resolene then slide them over the wood form. When finished they are stiff.

    • @phillaboody260

      @@markyoho2 ok so how do you treat the back so it doesn't leave dye everywhere?

    • @markyoho2
      @markyoho2  3 года назад

      Hey Phillip, I use Fiebings Pro Dye which is least likely for dye bleed. Chuck Dorset did a video on this on The Leather Element by Weaver Leathercraft. I have only had one complaint of dye bleed. Since that time I have started spray dying only the topgrain of the belt and leaving the back natural. You can spray dye very inexpensively using the Preval aerosol sprayers. I buy them at Home Depot in the paint section

    I Liked the video , but then you spoiled it at the end by twittering on about Jesus Christ. I don`t believe Religion has a place in a tuition video on leatherwork. You forget one thing Sir. Not everyone is religious ,and not everyone believes in Jesus Christ or God , so my feelings are,keep religion out of Tuition videos because while a few will like it ,some will not , so why bother to mention religion in the first place as your video is going to be watched by lots of people and many will not be religious .
