I'm a volunteer firefighter just north of NYC. Our fire truck, roughly same size as yours, only gets 6 mpg and it's a 2015 model year. Thankfully the local government pays for the fuel. 2/3rds of firefighters in the US are volunteers. In NY State, volunteer firefighters are completely unpaid.
Same here in Finland, volunteers are totally unpaid and the government/the professional fire bregade of the area pays the fuel from public funds to the volunteer stations. Volunteer fire stations are important in rural areas especially.
In Poland we have 32 000 national firefighters and 700 000 people working as volunteers (from which only 320 000 can do actual firefighting, remaining ones are purely supporting staff).
In Finland volunteer fire brigades cover about 95% of the total land area, only bigger cities (and few smaller towns) have manned fire-stations. It is interesting that we have such similar systems when it comes to fire and rescue, even though many other organisations (including health care and the police) are very different in the US.
Can't wait to see a portable hydraulic pump and tools added to the truck. Having hydraulic cutters, spreaders and a ram will add a whole new dimension to the channel.
SISU is a great Finnish word: Sisu means extraordinary determination in the face of extreme adversity and courage that is presented in situations where success is unlikely. Sisu expresses itself in taking action against all odds, whilst displaying courage and resolution in the face of adversity. In other words, deciding on a course of action, and then adhering to it even if repeated failures ensue. SISU is to never give up but always forge ahead where victory will be achieved.
Sisu is both beneficial and harmful fortitude. A research paper: ''Sisu is a Finnish cultural concept that denotes determination and resoluteness in the face of adversity. We propose that sisu will supplement the English-language based research on mental fortitude traits. Sisu has not been the focus of systematic research until very recently. We created a new questionnaire measuring sisu (the Sisu Scale), sought to validate the sisu construct and its sub-factor structure as postulated in a recent qualitative study. We investigated associations of sisu with other measures of mental fortitude and well-being. More generally we aimed to enrichen the cross-cultural understanding of human experience of overcoming adversity across life's challenges. We describe and validate a questionnaire that effectively measures both beneficial and harmful sisu, each comprising three sub-factors. Beneficial sisu was associated with other measures of fortitude, but less with personality dimensions. We also confirmed the existence of an independent harmful sisu factor. Beneficial sisu was associated with higher well-being and lower depressive symptoms, and harmful sisu with lower well-being and higher levels of general stress, work stress and depressive symptoms. Together the two factors were superior compared to pre-existing measures when predicting well-being-related variables. Results suggest that the new Sisu Scale we developed may provide a valuable addition to research on mental fortitude, resilience and their consequences for well-being.'' www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2405844022027712
SISU is a tough truck, very good choice. I like the look of a TATRA cab better. They're both hard to come by in the US so I wouldn't be too picky if I found either to buy.
Please show more of the cab, showing the light controls, siren/pa, 2-way radio, and whatever other controls that could be of interest to a former volunteer firefighter. Thank you.
The fire department has removed the lights, siren and radio because the new owner is a private person. It also needs to be re-registered as a private individual cannot own a vehicle registered as a fire engine. I think it could have flashing lights and sirens if it was museum registered.
Imagine converting this thing to a camper! Remove the tank and you would have loads of space inside and then so much storage on the outside. Would be amazing!
