I'm a firemen and one of the front line pumpers we use still has a Detroit two stroke in it. It's more dependable than our 2015 engine. Those detroits are all sound though lol. People at bus stops don't appreciate when they get coal rolled on them either.
My on occasion my dad drove an Autocar dump truck with a Detroit in it, he hated it, said it was so sloppy and spongy compared to his Mack. Said a Detroit has a lot of power but you have to stay jammed in the throttle to get any of it.
I have a ton of respect for anyone who admits they aren't comfortable or they are intimidated driving a vehicle, no matter what the vehicle is.....you sir get a GIANT THUMBS UP FOR THAT!!!! Most people won't admit it & will continue to drive the vehicle they are extremely uncomfortable with & their drive normally ends in one of these ways.......an accident with body damage, mechanical damage, maybe an injury to someone & if nothing else......definitely a foul smell in the vehicle because they shit themselves.
I have to admit when I can't drive something it's part of my job but I drive anything I can get into the driver's seat of I just ask for a spotter so I don't hit anything
Ozzie Sheppard I would even be intimidated driving a box truck considering I drive a... car. Most people are intimidated just driving big pickup trucks so box trucks are alien.
Imagine using this piece in service to an actual fire and you are driving it like you stole it. all the responsibility. yeah. respect the fire service man
@@Quickesner are you slow? he wasn't offended, he was saying imagine driving the engine to an actual call going 80mph and all the responsibility that comes behind it

If you can find a ladder truck with rear steer you should really try driving the back, it's a experience you won't forget. I was a fireman in the 70s and we had a ladder truck from the 40s with a open cabs front and rear, in the back you only steer but you had a button to signal the front driver to stop or brake. Backing into the narrow parking area at the firehouse was a challenge to say the least.
Got to love the sound of that 2 stroke Detroit diesel. It's the sound and heart of American cities and highways in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Nothing like the sound of a 71 Series Detroit Diesel.
Shit, since the 40’s at least. Bus Grease Monkey has a 40’s Greyhound with a rebuilt 6-71 with a 4 valve swapped head. I’ve also heard DD motors were used in some of our WWII vehicles.
Yeah! In the norwegian army we have some M113 APC's which use the Detroit 6v53 V6 two stroke, and it has that sick scream when it accelerates. Wonderful noise
Growing up we had those Schwan's trucks delivering frozen foods to our house, and they were so memorable because you'd have a two stroke DD engine rolling right up your driveway... awesomely terrifying. And for train nerds, the locomotive equivalent would have to be the good old F40PHs... so much noise and fury!
Tommy Hammond that'd be fun, I got excited when they uploaded the RV review. I read Frieghtliner and played the video only to find it was an RV with a Frieghtliner chassis.
I was sacred to death the first time I drove an engine. You did alright. Just remember to stay close to the center line. People will move over. You don't want to slide off the edge of the road especially if you have water in the tank. It may result in a nasty rollover.
Also sometimes colloquially called a J-brake, or exhaust brake (but never an E-brake, as that's the emergency brake)...but Jacob's is the correct name. Jake is just an abbreviation or nickname for Jacob.
It's impressive how much humble do you sound on videos like this: "I think imma let you drive on the way back". Oh boy, I would be afraid of driving something like this too. Theses vehicles must be respected but they also impose some awareness
My first was a '78 Hahn. Sitting back in the jump seats was deafening but I loved that thing. I still think Hahn made one of the best engines out there. It's a shame they are gone.
Now just imagine driving a semi everyday!! I drive semi an absolutely love it!! It’s stressful dealing with 4wheelers all day who don’t make the job easier but it’s something I’ve gotten used to. I absolutely love driving a big truck!!
That's what I like the most about this fire truck! That 8v71 needs to have a true dual exhaust system exiting just in front of the rear wheels on both sides (similar to a hot rod).
Wish you left some of the ride backward in. My first 3 years in a department we had a 81 mack and the rear jump seats is where the best seats in the house. Even on winter storms it was warm and on standbys I could grab a bit of sleep with that mack diesel running so smooth
You lucky mug, our motor sits next to us in the cab blasting our ears, the turbo gets the officer and the fuel pump and cam gets the driver. I love the hum of that Detroit
I've driven some big pieces of machinery... but my ass would not be willing to take on the responsibility of trying to navigate one of these beasts on narrow streets. Hell, I wasn't even willing to take an antique GM prototype car around a parking lot because I don't need that burden if something were to break while I was behind the wheel.
I have and it's actually easier than it looks. All you need to do is drag the side of your ass on the yellow line as you're going and you should stay perfectly in your lane.
@Ferguson101 yes sir! It will also get your pucker factor up when the 4 wheelers and super truckers don't feel like playing fair in those construction zones.
Reminds me of the first time I drove a manual. A lot of things going on and you cant afford to mess up, only your situation seemed a lot more intimidating.
Haha the first time driving a cabover is always the best one. The seating is so high up and you sit on top or in front of the front axle so the turning feels wonky and it's difficult to stay on you own lane, especially on a narrow road. He's right about the feeling of going fast. I was scared the first time my instructor made me go on the highway: the speed feels double. My first cabover was a Sisu E11 -offroad truck built for the Finnish Defence Forces. 6x6, 11L Cummins Turbo Diesel paired with an aggressive Allison 6-speed automatic. Wild ride, a good time.
My wife's grandpa does excavating and he says driving a dump truck or any other vehicle of that size is a lot like driving a motorcycle as far as having to be constantly alert. I've driven his 89 tandem freightliner dump a few times and it is a whole nother world up there. Very fun but very stressful
That 2-stroke diesel sounds awesome. It's deep and throaty (hehehe) like a diesel but the exhaust pulses are twice as fast as a diesel, making it sound like it's revving high like a gas engine.
