Im just playing devils advocate, but believe or not the concept of "free time" was relatively new in the 50's, since the economic boom and jobs were paying more than they ever had. You are right though it is ridiculius to make a psa on how to spend free time
Preventing boredom served either a moral purpose, not having the devil make work for idle hands of young people, or an economic one by encouraging productive hobbies and preparing them for the workplace.
Nowadays we can amuse ourselves with HoH SiS and JoJ.

I don't think I've ever put in a full 72 hours, but I've done quite a few 7x10s. Amazingly easy to pay the bills when you have no time to spend your money. In the era that this was filmed, it would be impossible to work that much (as an employee) if you didn't have a spouse. There would be no way to get any of your banking or mailing accomplished.
