I was a teenager in the 90’s and was THE guy in my class with the terrible acne. I had it throughout high school, and it was miserable. I’m convinced that experience affects my self-confidence even today - like I trained myself in those formidable years to want to hide/blend into the crowd because of my shame in the appearance of face. Learning so much through your videos has made me realize how I did EVERYTHING wrong in my desperate attempts to clear my skin (terribly drying products, scrubbing my skin in harsh soaps and very hot water, not moisturizing thinking I needed to dry my skin so I wouldn’t get oily, popping my pimples, etc). I cringe at the thought, and it makes me wonder how different my life might have been had I had access to RUclips and all this education. Hopefully there are kids out there today who have learned from you and been able to gain some self confidence back through clearing their skin. Thanks for what you do.

Did your doctors not offer you Accutane or RetinA? By the late 80s, doctors knew about the serious and long-lasting impact of acne scaring on emotional and mental health and were prescribing teens with severe acne Accutane or RetinA. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I hope all teenagers are learning to advocate for their skincare with their parents and the doctor.

I had a friend in high school in the 90's who was the first person I knew to try retin-a. The other kids made fun of him first for the acne and then for the skin peeling. But a few months in, his skin cleared up entirely. But he never really got over all that teasing and was always a little insecure. :(

Well said. I had cystic acne. Luckily my grandma paid for accutane, which was its own nightmare for a while, but it cleared my acne by my senior year in high school. I think what makes me the angriest to this day are the people, usually adults, who would insist if you kept your face clean you would not break out. It is not hard enough having clumping acne, you just need to make the kid feel shame for being non hygienic as well. I am also still upset about some of the stuff, including the "buff puff" and diluted clorox, that my mother would insist that I try. I know she sometimes got the question, "does she wash her face." I am getting angry just typing this.

OMG I know right!!!!! I still use noxzema TO THIS DAY I remember my cousin put me on to it when we were in middle school. I was looking for a good skin cleaner to use instead of using the bar soap I used in the shower. The ones she told me to look in to waaaaaay back then was noxzema, oxyclean pads, the sea breeze astringent and Nivea cream for moisturizer at the end. And to this day I still will use those items. Yes I will say I have tried to switch up and use other brands to get rid of my old zit marks. And I found this product called Dr. Gross in Sephora's store, and it has gotten rid of the old dark marks. But aside from that I can't stop using my 90s go to skincare products. Like the old saying goes, if it's not broke, don't fix it. 💯😊

Ponds cold cream in the green jar( unscented?) Was a staple for my mom and grandma. My grandma rubbed it in all through Johnny Carson's monolog.😅 Then tissued it off. My mom used a wet, soft baby wash cloth to wipe hers off. We were not aloud to use bar soap on our faces. Mom said it makes you look old??? She used that same moisturizer, Olay 15 spf day and night.
I never liked to "scrub" my face. I really enjoy the double cleans method. Thank God my mom made me moisturize my acne prone skin back in the 80's. Even though I thought I should not use any moisturizer. I have no scaring.I went into Cosemtology. Became a Hairstylist and estitician. I worked for a plastic surgeon for 5 of my 20 years. I learned a lot from him about skin. We talked alot about cost of products and good ingredients. Realized Este Lauder was full of 💩! I have used Nutragena for over 40 years??? Cerave for the last 15. I spend less than $200 a year on skin care now including my Differin.🥰

My family and I use Noxzema on sunburns (which are rare, but do sometimes happen accidentally). It was something my mom taught me as a kid. It feels SOOOOOO good, cools the burn really well and keeps it from peeling. It sounds weird, but it works. I also use it on my face regularly, though. My dry skin loves it. Guess I'm stuck in the 90s. 😄

Here’s a topic for an episode - here in New England, everyone forever has used Bag Balm, which is made in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, during the frigid winter - on lips, hands, feet especially. Farmers, skiers, lobstermen along with everyone else swears by this stuff. I buy the wee mini cans at CVS - i apply lotion and slather on the stuff under gloves and socks when skiing, and it prevents blisters as well. I keep it bedside as a nighttime hand/foot moisturizer. Here’s the ingredients in case your stores don’t carry it in the southwest- petrolatum, lanolin, paraffin wax, water, and 8-Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate (0.3%)
I’d love to hear what you think of this NE staple with a cult following.

The Bag Balm® product was originally used in the cold Vermont winters to protect the cow's udders from getting chapped. It seems the farmers that applied this to their cows soon realized their hands became remarkably soft after using this lanolin-based ointment.
Some people have lanolin allergies, so patch test first.

I washed my face with Dove bar soap (yikes!), thankfully had very little acne growing up, and I don’t even remember using moisturizer until many years later, same with sunscreen! I think my first ‘routine’ consisted of buying the St Ives cleanser, an astringent toner and a night cream by Garnier when I was maybe 27 or 28, and thinking how ‘fancy’ I was being! 😂 I also went through a ‘kitchen skincare’ phase involving coconut oil, coffee grounds and lemon juice (double yikes!!) and thinking I was being good to my skin! I’ve stopped all mechanical exfoliation this year and my skin is much calmer. Am now strictly chemical and noticing less irritation as long as I use mild products that are fragrance-free. Also, I’ve double-cleansed since 1994, using a liquid creme cleanser (Lancome’s Galactee) that is wiped off (gently!) followed by Cetaphil face wash, and rarely, a moistuizing toner (also Lancome Galactee). I stopped tanning at age 22 & have used daily sunscreen moisturizer since age 28. At age 64 I have fewer wrinkles than a lot of my peers and am grateful to dermatologists who’ve encouraged me for all these years!

I love the nostalgic packaging as well and I remember many of the jingles and commercials for some of these skincare items “ beautiful skin can be a breeze, with sea breeze”.I have worked in the beauty and skin health industry for over 15 years and the smell of sea breeze definitely pulled me in from time to time and I know better lol. Thanks for this video Dr Dray, one of my favorites for sure!

OMG! This brings back memories! I was an avid Noxzema and Apricot Scrub user, just damaging my skin every doggone day! LOL Thankfully, my aunt intervened in my high school years and gave me the complete Mary Kay kit. She kept me supplied as long as I promised to use the products. So I was introduced to a skincare routine early on and saw results. I never struggled with acne and other problems my friends had and I just thought I was lucky. My friends would say I had nice skin and wished they had it. I appreciated the compliments, but always thought it was strange. It wasn't until decades later that I realized it was the products that kept my skin in great condition. Then in my late 20s/early 30s I started using Serious Skincare and again they sold products in kits. So I was used to following a routine and now at 48 I have no wrinkles and very few fine lines.
Your channel has helped me learn so much about products and adding specific ingredients that help keep my skin healthy and vibrant. So, thank you for sharing all of the amazing information with those of us who don't see a dermatologist and/or need help understanding how products work to figure out what we really need vs what is marketed to us.

I used SeaBreeze, Noxzema, the Buff Puff, St. Ives Apricot Scrub, pink Oil of Olay ... I also used a clear TAN ACCELERATOR. Ugh ... we wanted as much sun as we could possibly get ... wanted to be beach girls and spent A LOT of time there. Shudder. I also used the Pond's Cold Cream way back then and still use it for the first step of my double cleanse. Very happy to hear that you approve of the white Olay moisturizer with the 15 SPF as I have that and really like it!

My sisters used noxema “for their acne” I really loved the way it smelled but being much younger I was never allowed to use it. So when I got old enough to buy my own I did and I hated it. Left this weird film and dried my skin out so bad. When I was a teen I was blessed by the skin gods so I just used the soap that was in our shower. I think ivory and then wait for it…….straight isopropyl alcohol 🤦🏽‍♀️. No sun screen….in fact I frequented the tanning beds. My children suffer from acne so they are learning at a very young age the right way to care for their skin. They will thank me when they are older. Ha!

I tried my sister's yellow Clinique lotion when I was a teen/young adult (can't remember precisely when) and it made me break out so I wrote off the whole brand. I don't know what made me try it again recently, an appropriate routine for my skin, and it works beautifully. I use Type 3. I skip the exfoliating lotion (toner) when my skin is feeling sensitive. Their light textured moisturizers for acne prone/oily skin are marvelous! Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (yellow, lotion texture), Hydrating Jelly (clear), and Moisture Surge 72 hour (gel cream) are wonderful.

She told me she didn't know anything about the ingredients and you shouldn't use anything you can barely pronounce. Basically she didn't know her stuff and she wanted to save face. I look back at the things I did to my skin in the 90's and it's a wonder that I even still have skin. I used to use Noxzema pads like they were going out of style IN ADDITION to the Neutrogena thick, white benzoyl peroxide stuff in the big white tube that I would leave on my face for like a half an hour if I had one zit. I also used some sort of astringent, the brand of which I can't recall. And *of course* the tub of Apricot Scrub, that stuff was pure gold. And for good measure I ironed my hair with an actual iron.

My 90s skincare routine included several products from Clinique; the yellow soap, the Dramatically Different Moisturizer (also yellow), and toner.
During my teenage angst, St. Ives scrub in the tub was always around. There was another Almay skincare product aimed at teens that I believe had salicylic acid? The tube was white with purple writing/design. It worked for my acne!

I remember when I was a preteen, I hated the idea of growing up. So when I got my first zit, I begged my mom for Seabreeze products. I was constantly putting the astringent on my face and the cleanser left my skin so terribly dry. I started getting more zits around that time which might have just been my age but all I did was continue to dry out my skin. Then when I was about 16, I had a really busy summer with friends and I essentially stopped all the harsh skin care because I simply didn’t have time. I mostly went home and rinse to my face with water. All the zits I had cleared up. That’s when I realized in my case, less is more.

Clinique City Block facial sunscreen and Ambre Solair sun tan oil everywhere else. I did use a Buff Puff sometimes but never did use more than one tube of St Ives. My mum and my gran both used Ponds Cold Cream all their lives but it was far too oily for me. I tried the Olay which was called Oil of Ulay back then but never liked the smell. I wore makeup, but never used any other cleanser except the one for acne, and now I suspect I might have had better skin back then had I actually used an oil-based cleanser to get the makeup off first. live and learn!

Anti-acne skincare in the 90’s were all about drying out the skin.. In Sweden we have an acne cream that had 5% or 10% benzoyl peroxide.. It still exists but now, at least there are some (better) alternatives. I sometimes use it to prevent odours and bacteria in my armpits but I actually prefer some of The Ordinary’s glycolic acid instead since I don’t have to rinse it away (to not have the benzoyl peroxide bleaching my clothes). Yeah, scrubs...
Thank Goodness Proactiv introduced me to salicylic acid and the idea of a 2 times a day skincare routine. I don’t use Proactiv anymore but it cleared out my skin. Yeah, salicylic acid 👍 👍

And we see through the background of your videos that you haven't adopted a materialistic, lifestyle of 'the rich and famous.' This impresses me as well. I was wondering, if it's not too outside of your comfort zone, if you could give us a little tour of your place or share with us how you made decisions about your interior decorating etc.?
