  • Everyone knows I am partial the Beckers and TOPS knives (and no, I am not paid to be!), so you see a lot of them. I thought it would be a good idea on my last trip out with Will and Austin to showcase the blades Mantis Outdoors uses on any trip into the woods. Will and Austin break down their chosen EDC knives, Multi Tool, and primary and secondary bushcraft/survival knives that they pretty much ALWAYS carry into the woods. Also discussed are our thoughts on gear upgrade mentality...how to spend wisely based on your level of use and budget.

Excellent video guys. I agree about upgrading your gear as you can, based on how much time you spend in the woods and how intense that time is. I know one philosophy is that it is cheaper to buy low cost gear and just replace it with more low cost gear when it fails, and that is a one option. The problem I see with that is it often fails at the worst possible time. In my opinion blades, boots and shelter are three things where you should go for the highest quality you can afford because if either one of those fail you could be in a world of hurt. (That's not to say other stuff isn't important too.) I can't wait to get a look at the Hudson Bay blanket Will. Very nice. - Bryan

Great advice toward the end of the video about working your way up to better gear. That is exactly what my plan is since I had to basically start over. An inexpensive knife is better than no knife and you can still practice skills that you'll have for life.

I think it's great that not only you are teaching people to evolve with their gear but I have noticed you have evolved as well, not so long ago it was becker this and becker that, I have a BK7 and it's a great knife I have used it a long while but for me it's an expensive knife and I nearly lost it twice and have now replaced it with an Ontario SP47, why???? because I'm in Australia and getting some knives is bloody expensive a $40 knife in the US is a $120 here, a $300 is $6-700. I agree with everything you guys said, well done great vid thanks again for sharing

My most inexpensive knife is my most used for "bushcrafting". I carry gransfor bruks small forest axe and a bk7, but my frost mora crook knife is the best for notches feather sticks and smaller tasks. I use my axe and bk7 to prep wood "bigger task". But smaller task the crook knife come ls out.

Taylor Leivestad give the BK11 a try its a great little knife has a wire breaker and a bottle opener on the handle and is light enough you barely know it's there but is strong enough to baton with (with in reason)

  • @D00MTR33

Rwl 34 is a good powder metallurgy steel, its a European equivalent of cpm 154 which is a powder version of 154cm. If its custom heat treated it should be at 60 to 62 hrc(one of the pluses of cpm 154 is it can be ran harder than 154cm), att that hardness it will hold a good edge and still be easy to maintain. Sweet lookin blade Will got there.

I've recently bought the Schrade knives 36 and 37 and it looks like those knives might be all I need probably for the rest of my life quite honestly. The way I process my kindling and tinder, not to mention that I've hardly had to baton anything I think I'm set, probably until I get bored with them really. Awesome video guys I'm definitely thinking of getting a Jeff White Bushcraft knife or a Colson Customs O1 tool steel knife.

Awesome vid's Chris. I know your not a BK2 guy, but I have a BK2 that I use for camping, bushcraft and general motocamping. Granted, it was junk out of the box (JMHO)... but once I stripped off the coating, blued it, sharpened the spine and introduced the blade to my Worksharp, I couldn't ask for a better knife. I can baton, light charcloth off the spine with a rock, throw sparks off a ferrorod, etc. It's Boss. Yes, I had to put some work into it to have it "bushcraft" worthy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything... plus nothing beats a knife that you've customized yourself. PS: Thanks for the "tennis wrap" idea for the handle. I love it.

Yeah I kinda disagree with the message that moving up or improving your gear means spending more money. I actually try to spend less and lighten my load while at least maintaining capability and increasing my enjoyment level. Most back yard and weekend adventurists honestly don't need to buy expensive stuff... certainly not for what you guys do on this channel. You can do the weekend warrior thing and drive to the river with inexpensive stuff no problem. A 40 dollar knife and army blanket are just fine... no evolving necessary unless by choice. Nice job! Love that Swerve Will!

You get a good stanlees or carbon stanless you,ll find out just what you can and cant do and be surprise that a small stanless knife make a good back up to your main blade

Good advice! I don't currently have a Pathfinder PLSK-1, but I really want one!
There is a lot of good gear available out there for not a great deal of money. You can't afford a $290 PLSK-1? Get a $110 Pathfinder Trade Knife, Tops B.O.B. or Tops Dragonfly. $110 is still too steep? Get a Ka-Bar BK-15, 16 or 17 for $70 or a Mora Bushcraft Black for $40. (The Ka-Bar BK-7 is a fantastic knife, but it's a bit big for bushcraft. Get a Mora Companion to go with it though, and you're good to go!) You can get a Mora Companion HD for less than $20, and, while I wouldn't do much batoning with it, it will do the vast majority of what you need done!
The point is that you don't have to be rich to get out there and do this stuff. You just have to be willing to do it. You can upgrade your as you go.

Schrade is solving that problem in 2015. I can't wait to show people. I should have the early testers in a month. Myself and a few others contributed much advice in their design. 1095 saber grinds, ergonomic handles, 90° spines and choils. Three sizes, slightly different.

You said the steel was RW something. I'm guessing it's RWL-34 which is a powder steel that has a finer grain structure than ATS-34/154CM which makes it basically CPM-154 which is a great steel. By the way waiting a year for a custom knife is not that long.

I seen Dave Canterbury's video on the Chris Caine Survival knife. Sure looks tough and rugged. With a good size blade and quality, at only $200, seems like some serious competition out there... I really liked it, along with a couple big knives from Tops, one being the Armageddon. I currently have a BG Gerber I got as a gift, but I think it will be a great back up knife along side my Tops Intercepter. I just want something bigger as I want to make bush craft and self reliance more of a hobby.

I think under standing what a knife can and cant do at a certain price range cus if I had a dollar store knife Id, be seeing if I can make fuzzy wuzzy that tender crap the shavings with the spine and be using it to curl feathers you see I cant just go and pick up a 200~ 300 $ its not that I dont have the money or that I cant set the money aside at that price range for me knives start become more and more beautiful and while its brand new it just so sexy like the scout knives William got its its almost like a safe queen knife type of deal

6:22 That's nothing. I'm on the waiting list for the Alan Woods Woodlore Knife about six years now and about three more to go. That's the one Ray Mears carries. I've come to prefer a larger knife, but I'll still continue to wait. Too much time invested to quit now. Resale will be very high since they stopped taking orders some time ago and it will be a collectable.

What's wrong with knives from Walmart? They carry the best knives in town! They are the highest quality, least expensive, and Chinease made! Just cuz a little china kid made the knife does not take away from quality! I promise, there is no sarcasm in this comment what so ever...lol
