    I watched a video before where it was insisted that if you have a passion for knives then you will never stop seeking the next best thing. I call that addiction not passion. I love the idea of just settling with a few good tools and learning to care for them inside out and using them till they're an extension of yourself. I notice a lot of knife enthusiast who talk like the afforementioned 'passionate knife guy' often have super clean collections with very little sign of use. I'm not saying they don't use them I just think they have so many knives each one just sees a little use. Each to their own but as someone who bordered on becoming a blade addict for a while there...I wholeheartedly support your philosophy.

    Say Heah Kris, I bought a Bokor Black Rold in D2, a real nice knife, But the Sheath was dangerously loose. Infact I seriously injured myself with it, So I put a Belt Loop on it, But the Handle Strap was a little loose. I ended up tightening it by putting my Mora Classic #1 on the strap. It fits great and looks great too everything matches even the colors. I also attached a Wenger Pouch to the bottom of the sheath and that worked out great, Now I have to pretty good knives to work wood with. I'm pretty proud of this accomplishment. Originally I was going to use a pen light of some sort. But boy am I glad I thought of putting that Classic #1 instead.

    pssst!! A very inexpensive way to acquire leather for knife sheaths think all leather shoes from Thrift Store. I got a pair of size 14 Rockport all leather slip-ons for 1.50. I cut the tongue and entire top portion out along the thread stitching then folded it in half and went back and sewed it closed using the same holes and it worked perfect for my 2.00 yard sale Imperial. I use it for skinning. But just to give you an idea on cheap leather pieces for knives, I figured I'd throw this cheap info your way.

    I don't carry the same knives as you but I dont think you need to replace any of them. You've got a nice set that compliment each other. I find that knives can be as much a work if art as craftsmanship and that includes useability. Nice video.. it has me wondering if I should gave a small carver in board like your Mora.

      I agree with you about the beauty of a tool AND that it's completely functional. I really like having a carving knife. They practically weight nothing. And they're just so much better at carving than a larger/thicker blade. I don't worry about weight so much. I'd rather have the correct tool for the job. You know? -Krik

    I would choose the ESEE 6 over the Rat 7, just because of the better coating and the handle. The micarta handle on the Rat 7 is a bit too bulky for me. But Non the less the Rat 7 will get the job done, no question. Mora knifes are awesome, the quality steel you get for the price is just incredible. Keep it up!

    I have been watching your vids for a couple months now and I enjoy everyone of them. Also, I just purchase a couple days ago the ESEE Junglas and have not had a chance to use it yet. Man, what a beast. I like it for all the things you said about the RAT-7. I would like to know, how you go about putting a 90 degree spine on your knives. I also have a Mora Companion and it did not come with a 90 degree spine. I plan on just using the fine wheel on my 6" grinder. Keep up the good work.

      +Black Owl Outdoors Hey bro, i know you said that your resources are limited, but can i suggest that you do not get rid of your kydex for the Esee 4, and just get yourself a TekLok for it. Its an awesome upgrade for 7 to 10 dollars if you look around, and you can attach it any way you wish to your belt or gear, and it also opens so you can remove it without taking off your belt. I use a teklok for my Rat 3 in the horizontal scout carry position right next to my belt buckle. Its my edc and i never leave home without it, and it never ever gets in my way, forget it is even there at times. Btw i totally agree w the rest of your blade choices. I have a Mora 2000,Mora bush craft black, Esee3, Esee4,Rat 3, Rat 1, SCHF12, SCHF11, SCHF33, SCHF36 ,Rat7 ,Esee 6 and 5, Cold Steel voyager fully serrated tanto 4'', Recon 1 XL tanto fully serrated, Becker Bk2, and BK14, as well as a few collectible custom Karambit, and tracker knives, and a few ive made myself. Sounds like a lot, but some i take in the woods, a couple are for defense that i keep razor sharp n never use other than keeping my hands familiar w them, and others i keep in my vehicle, my camp, and in various bug out bags.

    Having an ever growing knife collection is a luxury. and as stated in the vid he doesnt have the resources nor desire. however he has some damn good knives there, nice little set up. each knife has a specific use its good for. I actually own a RAT 1 (which is just a bigger version of the rat 2) excellent knife. holds its own against blades twice the price.

    New subscriber, really enjoying your channel. :) The Blackjack Grunt is a great budget blade to check out, if you can find one. 11" inches over all, full tang, 5.25" blade, convex grind from the factory. It's 10CR17 Stainless, even so, a brute of a budget blade. Sheath is gawd awful, but priced at under $30 (shipped). Having used it to baton frozen Oak while winter camping, with no issues. I love a good blade, huge fan of ESEE, Kershaw, Benchmade, Emerson, Blind Horse, Bark River, even Buck, as well as custom blades, but for the price point and durability/quality, the Grunt gets the job done quite well.

  • @csheltn
    @csheltn 11 лет назад

    One thing you could do for the ESEE sheath is go to one of the gun holster companies like CompTac, Garrett Industries, Crossbreed, etc and take a look at their tuckable IWB holster options. They sell the individual pieces that allow the holster to attach to the belt and the hard wear will fit through the holes in that sheath. It would be pretty cool it have a ESEE 4 with an IWB sheath with the option to tuck your shirt in over for ultra concealment if you wanted to carry it in the civilized world. An IWB sheath would be cool in the woods too because it would be out of the way and free of snags or any other hang ups. Just an idea. Keep up the good videos.

    Being from Sweden I´m verry familiar with the mora knife. I think you should look in to Fällkniven (or as you´d say Fallkniven) knives. The F1 and/or S1 models are great for bushcraft and the A1 is more of a survivalknife. I little more expensive then the mora but better quality knife aswell.

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  10 лет назад

      I've researched Fallkniven knives a lot. If I ever get the chance to use one, I definitely will. But just a little out of my price range at the moment. Thanks for the suggestion though. -Krik

  • @mustak324
    @mustak324 10 лет назад

    For fine tasks and a fairly desent price you might want to check Opinel (I like the size of the No9) in the carbon steel version. It gets super sharp pretty easily and holds and edge well, it is very light, it locks securely - all in all a nice one. However it is not nearly as sturdy as your Rat and there is nothing you can do with it that you can't do with the Moras. I like your approach towards owning just the things you actually use. I like your videos in general (even though most of them are a little bit too long for my taste)

    Say Heah Krik, Yeah I just got my new Busse Flak Jack just in time for this new season. It's a 6" blade and. .170" thick. I love it, it's the INFI Steel version, It's similar to my S. O. G. Pillar but on steroids. Infact I took it out this weekend with the guy's on our weekend trip, I teamed it with my 24" Council Woodcraft Pack Axe and my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw, and my Leatherman Charge TTi. I also might use my Spyderco Puukku as my neck knife. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

    For battoning/splitting wood, a 20 degree edge would not last very long, it would fold and dull quickly. For my heavy chopping knives I use a 24 degree angle, holds up well and is still sharp enough to do other work with. On the other hand when I take a walk in the woods I carry a Tomahawk for all my chopping and splitting needs. Right tool for the job. But, this was a very good video.

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  11 лет назад

      Thanks for the info James. I agree with you, right tool for the job. I have an ax and a hatchet. Unfortunately, most of our time in the forest is on public land. So, I really can't and won't take too much big wood (i.e. the need for a hatchet/hawk/ax). One day I hope to own a piece of land. Thanks for watching and sharing. -Krik

  • @snowpuppy77
    @snowpuppy77 11 лет назад

    I also have a Mora Companion. Your video encouraged me to get it. Noticed that your Companion and not the Companion HD made your list. Makes sense to me as the Companion will be a better slicer and carver due to the thinner blade. And you can pair the Companion with the Esse 4 or the Rat7 giving your more versatility than if you paired those with the HD. Is that why the Companion HD did not make your list?

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  11 лет назад

      The HD really doesn't do anything better than the regular companion. I've had the companion longer, so that's why it's on my list. But they're interchangeable. -Krik

Anyhow,I have a matching set with my Ranger RD-9 both are in the same steel and the Hi-Viz Orange Handles. Both knives are Flat Grinds and I keep them pretty sharp. In fact on one trip, I had the Rangee RD-9 bow in me that I thought it was ruined,But when I batoned through it staightened out true, fantastic steel, I still use the set, Both have choils that I especially like. Biker Casper Didn't have any pvc. I wanted to use something more weather resistant than wood, but I didn't want to spend any money. You know? BUT, I have since made a leather sheath for my Mora. Have you seen any of the videos where the sheath was featured? -Krik

      BlackOwlOutdoors This might help you. Go to You Tube channel Preparedmind101, look for Best Kydex shealth part 1 Azwelke or The 710 Custom Shealth Pathfinder Trade
      Drop leg Kydex shealth with D ring swivel belt loop by Grizzly-Outdoors
      Convert your knike shealth for safety and comfort D ring by Leon Pantenburg. Check out his channel.
      Also seen video's were a carabiner was used with shealth too.
      A good cheap way to cut wood use a chainsaw chain and tie with tactical cord on both ends of chain, now you got a pocket/suvival hand power saw. Video's out there like pocket saw or saw in Altoids tin.

    A good multi tool like a leatherman or swiss army knife are always handy to have-in the woods or the city. And with all the styles and variations available today it should be pretty easy to find one that fits your needs and budget. Just don't buy a cheap knock off-the leatherman and or victorinox are worth the money

      Yea, I've seen them. I'm not sure if I want to go tactical with the sheath. I'm leaning towards more traditional if I do spend the money on one. -Krik

    hey guys! i just wanted to know, should i get a Mora Bushcraft w/sharpener and firestarter or the rat-7?
    Thanks!

    • @UziRyder1
      @UziRyder1 9 лет назад

      +michael watase Those are two completely different knives with two completely different philosophies of use. They are both great knives, but IMO, for a first bushcraft knife you would get the greatest flexibility of use out of the Mora Bushcraft Black.

      +michael watase did u already buy one? the upgraded mora is kinda expensive almost more worth it to just buy the bushcraft black without the sheath attachments and have a better sharpener to carry with u and a better fire steel that u could just strap onto the mora with ranger bands out of those two i would say grab the rat-7 and then buy a cheaper 20 buck mora for small carving tasks?

      +michael watase and if u want a great knife thats like the better version of a mora bushcraft black with the sheath add ons look at the tops B.O.B that is a full tang micarta handle scandi ground blade

    Its great to hear your minimalist philosophy in regard to owning heaps of stuff. I do the same. I find myself giving stuff away that I dont use. I'll buy a new knife to replace an old knife that is either broken or of poor quality, or to fil a new purpose my collection fesbt address. I don't want to be someone with dozens of unused knives in a pelican case. I'm too poor for that, anyway!

      I don't have good knives, right now all I have besides a multi tool, is a cheap stanley knife that came with some tool I bought a while back, it's a lock back, and about 2 3/4 blade, it has a lot of play when open, I can't adjust it and that bugs me, but it does it's job. I want something with good quality, small and something that doesn't rape my wallet. Thanks for replying!

    We've had several discussions over on BushcraftUSA.com about the pros/cons of the ESEE4 and how it compares to the Becker BK16. It always seems that the ESEE 4 has more cons against it. The BK16 is considered to be a better knife by a majority of the guys involved in the discussion. And, it's cheaper.

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  11 лет назад

      I like the handle better on the BK16. I put some work into the edge and it's pretty darn sharp and cuts well. But I like the ESEE 4 simply because it has the finger choil I highlighted in the video. The BK16 does not have one. -Krik

    • @Spiral_Out_68.
      @Spiral_Out_68. 11 лет назад

      BlackOwlOutdoors I like the choil to. That was the deciding factor for me when I was choosing between getting the ESEE 4 and the TOPS B.O.B. knife. So now I have the BK16 and the ESEE 4. Guess I can carry both, lol. I really liked this video by the way. You guys are doing an awesome job.

    Yeah Krik, That Essee 4 and the Rat 7 is a great size combination. Infact my Fav's go to combo is my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 similar size to your two. I also have a Frost Mora before they merged I guess, it's still scarry sharp and holding up well. I think it's the companion, I only paid $9.00 for it thinking I would only use it around the house, but when I realized how good it held a good edge, I take it out in the bush too. I usually neck carry it. Yeah between watching football and surfing the Tube, I caught a couple of your vids, Good stuff, Krik.

    How about testing a leuku? You can buy a blade by itself cheap and make a handle for it, or the Mora model 223 is a good choice. Steintanz on youtube did a review of it.
