Hey everyone! First of all, wow, thank you so much for your support on this video. It has reached far more people than I would've ever imagined, and I'm so humbled by your response. It has been a pleasure interacting with so many of you, and I want to thank you for the charitable and productive dialogue that so many of you have made possible. I wanted to point out a couple of things. First, many of you recommended that I go to a Catholic Mass, so I did! You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/M4nfaPm7NQE/видео.html. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. The second thing is that as I watch this video back, I recognize that my comment on "Medieval Theology" was a bit vague. Part of it came from a negative reaction to scholasticism, and part of it was that several doctrines were defined during that time that are flash points with Protestantism, but I recognize they didn't exactly originate then. In any case, the comment should've been either redacted on account ambiguity or explicated for greater clarity. In any case, thank you for your charity, and I look forward to more dialogues like this in the future.
    -Austin

Very happy you had this experience. Though I wonder how do you ever get back to unity of the Church with Protestantism? For Catholics we are held together by the authority of the Church, the Pope and the Council of Bishops. When there are questions of theological matters we have heated debate then humble ourselves to the authority of Church dogma. It seems to me without this body we end up with people incapable of reconciling and unifying when it comes to questions about the faith. My evidence for this would be the thousands of denominations of Protestantism. Anyway hope this wasn’t too long and would love to hear how Protestants seek unification and what that would look like

Firstly, you're amazing for having an open enough mind and heart to attend even a Bible study at a Catholic setting! Secondly, thank you for clarifying the vague statements. That helped a LOT. I'm super protective of my Church, as a whole, and it always physically pains my heart to hear people saying horrible things about it. But, a lot of those statements had been made out of simple ignorance (lack of prior knowledge), not meanness. Thanks be to God, when I have gently, but firmly, corrected the person(s) making said statement(s), their receptivity has always been positive. You're amazing, and you're in my prayers always. God bless you!

      hi stranger
I was a catholic who also was opened minded
and jesus was able to work with me
heres a part of my testimony what happened to me in my life with my religion
in 1983 I was listening to a country radio station and that radio station told us jesus was coming back
I thought why wasnt our catholic church teach us anything about jesus returning
I waited 10 years in our catholic church to hear something about the 2nd advent of jesus
and finally the priest made a comment on the 2nd advent of jesus
the priest said that the bible tells us that when we die we all go to our graves and we will all go together as one huge group to heaven for we will not go as individuals as the church teaches.
so the catholic church has told us a lie on going to heaven or hell or purgatory immediately after death when one dies
my bible tells me that jesus himself cannot tell a lie he wont pratice a lie or will he partake in a lie
this mean jesus will not marry a church if the church is in a lie.
friends the bible teaches that we go to the grave immediately after death and if we die in christ then we will be resurrected in the 1st resurrection
and if we die in sin we will wait until the 2nd resurrection of the wicked just to come to life to see why we were lost and who is God and what we mist out on the gift at the cross jesus took in our place.
the catholic church in Rome is lieing and teaching lies
the prostentants are also following that same lie
remember a 1/3 of the angels in heaven believed in a lie that Lucifer told and all them are no lost
Adem an Eve believed a lie and look at the results of this world because they believed in a lie
its critical what we believe in when it comes to being apart of the bride of christ
I say to most of you, read your bible and ask jesus to send you the holy spirit and guide you from the catholic church and the majority of the prostentants churches as well
look for the bride of christ shes alive in this world friends

I'm a Baptist, but have been active in other Protestant churches as well. The last year or so, I've been studying the Apostolic Fathers and the Early Church... And I have to side with J.H.Newman here. The early church was not Protestant, and certainly not Baptist...

Catholicism is really a complicated religion. As a practicing Catholic, we have to read the Bible, connect the Bible to the traditions and to the interpretations of the Church. That is why we have Magesterium, Scriptures, and traditions as tripods of deposits of Catholic faith.
There are Catholics who are nominal in their faith. Their life revolves only in worship and social approaches but not in catholic spiritual inputs. When a practicing Catholic preaches to a nominal catholic, most nominal catholics avoid discussing doctrines but enjoy discussing faults and issues in the society and the Church.

I left Protestantism for the Holy Catholic Church a few years back, this after years of study and a calling to a deeper faith that left me wanting. Reasons I joined the Church 1) founded by Christ 2) Apostolic succession 3) sacramental 4) Eucharist - body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ 5) sola scriptura is self-refuting 6) Early Church Fathers 7) Spiritual depth based on two thousand years of practice 8) Tired of sermons (intellect) being the highlight of Sunday gatherings 9) Mass, especially in the extraordinary form, is the culmination of heavenly prayer and union 10) Tradition as passed on by the apostles through the bishops unto us 12) there are many other reasons especially the love for the Holy Mother of God, the consistent articles of faith/morals and the fact that it is the only institution that has been around for 2 thousand years. The Lord says the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I like you had a lot of preconceived notions about the Church based primarily on hearsay I heard other Protestants say. Once I took to study I found out I had been misled unintentionally by others in a long game of deceptive telephone tag, initiated by only God knows who. Be careful, if you put your mind to studying the Church you too might become Catholic.

For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
      1 Corinthians 11:18‭-‬19‭
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
      1 Corinthians 11:24‭-‬25
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
      1 Corinthians 11:27‭-28
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
      1 Corinthians 11:29
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
      1 Corinthians 11:30‭-‬31
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
      1 Corinthians 11:34
How come you Protestants after all this still believe it is just a symbol and not the real body and blood of Christ?

    • @darius8783
      @darius8783 4 года назад +7

Gospel Simplicity “Pray” is the act-synonymous to “communicate (with).” The distinctions happen with the intention: Latria - due worship of God, Dulia - veneration due to the Saints (those in Heaven other than God), and hyperdulia - veneration due to the Theotokos, the Mother of God. For the latter two, we are approaching the rest of the Heavenly court for intercession, so we show them veneration while asking for the favor of praying for us.
In the early days of Christianity, those who crossed the line from hyperdulia to latria, with regards to Mary, were condemned as heresy.
      Thanks Austin.

I'm a Catholic and I have never heard a protestant be as nice about the differences between us before. Thank you for your openness. I believe both groups have plenty of Biases to work past before we can ever truly work towards a united church. Especially on the Catholic side. In my Sunday school we were never educated on the differences between protestants and just sort of refered to all protestant groups as the same and that really isnt anywhere to start a dialogue from. We all must recognize each other as equals and reconcile the differences of the church as we strive for unity. And, I may be very singular in these times but I do believe that there are places the Church truly needs to adapt some Protestant theology into herself. Overall just a great video, thanks!

    • @GospelSimplicity
      @GospelSimplicity  4 года назад +3

First, thank you for your kind words. I very much so wanted to come across respectfully in this video, and it means a lot to me that, for you, this was the case. You're very right about our need to confront biases. I think your experience in Sunday school is not much different than most Protestants. Unfortunately, I think when we often hear about Catholics growing up, we are mainly told that what we need to know is that they don't read the Bible, they worship Mary, and they believe that you're saved by works (plus maybe some stuff about purgatory and the pope). It's often not a very charitable or accurate description. I'm glad that you feel there are some things the Catholic Church can learn from Protestants. Obviously, as a Protestant, I share this sentiment. Moving past tribalism can help us not only strive for unity, but it can help us grow and be better off for our learnings from one another.

    • @TheNinjaNuNu
      @TheNinjaNuNu 4 года назад +1

Gospel Simplicity I find the most interesting example of this Talking past one another that Catholics and Protestants have been doing, and the example we should use to learn from, Is exactly the point of Saved by world vs Saved by Faith Alone, the original declaration that Salvation through faith alone was anathema was done by the Church without even fully understanding what was meant by it. And in fact in relation to Lutherans the Catholic Church has officially pseudo-apologized for not recognizing how that church was using it. You see, when Catholics Hear of Salvation by Faith alone, they think “Oh, so I can do any sin I want and never be repentant and so long as I vaguely believe in Jesus I’m saved, I also don’t have to do good or give to charity, just believe?” Which isn’t at all what Protestants mean in my experience, it’s always more along the lines of “Yeah, you are saved by your faith in Christ, but your faith is manifested in what you do, if you’re selfish and mean clearly you don’t have much faith in Christ.” And so Faith and Works are sort of tied together. Which is actually pretty darn near close to what Catholics mean by Salvation by Faith and Works. I know Protestants see that and think “Oh, so I literally don’t even need to believe in Jesus or follow any of the sacraments anyway?? Then what’s the point, I’m saved so long as I’m a good person so why do anything specifically Christian?” When really, my Lay understanding, is that it’s just what the Protestants are saying but reversed! lol By doing those good person actions you are Relying on your innate access to the Holy Spirit, if you aren’t fully sharing in Christ that’s an area we should improve on but faith without works is nothing to God. Really, I find we are both saying the same thing, just phrasing it slightly differently, at least in my experiences.

TheNinjaNuNu Right. My dad says I’m not truly Christian as a Catholic, so not in the, “circle of the saved.” Whenever he gets mad at me he disses my religion and tells me I’m going to hell. Funny thing is, I went to a Protestant mega church with a coworker years ago, after I believed in Christ and then found out about all these denominations (What?! How do you know which is the right one?!), and it was upon hearing Catholicism condemned three times, by the coworker, the greeting pastors, and the head pastor in his sermon, that I realized Catholicism was the denomination that was most treated how I saw Jesus treated in the Bible by his own and the world. So, I knew where to find Jesus.

@@danielc3446 What do you mean by "That is not helpful", I wonder? I hear this phrase too often and always in the context of relativism and indifferentism. Your approach of truth is not true: when for example one person teaches that justification is by faith alone and the other person teaches that justification comes by faith and requires baptism, the two persons are teaching two different gospels. There are 3 possibilities then: either the first person is teaching a false gospel or the second person is teaching a false gospel or both persons are teaching a false gospel. The only impossibility is that both persons are teaching the one true Gospel, yet that is what you are at, it seems
You redefine the Gospel according to your own relativist ideas and then you conclude that all who claim the Gospel indeed go by the same gospel, which is the very definition of indifferentism and is false by definition. There is only one Gospel Divine and many man-made ones and these latter damn people for all time: read Paul and John. We also share common beliefs and doctrines with worshippers of Satan: the meaning of such is utterly null and void. Finely Frost Easy. The rosary is a set of beads that we hold to count when we are mediating on the major events in the life of Jesus. For example, the birth of Jesus, we mediate on what Jesus wants to teach us... like detachment of things. Every event we mediate on is in the Bible. Now, the Hail Mary prayer derives from what the Angel Gabriel said to Mary when he greeted her. The second part was what Elizabeth said to Mary, both found in the Bible- “Hail Mary, full of grace. We ask Mary for her intercessions because of her role in Jesus’ life and now as our mother. It’s kinda like if you ask a friend to pray for you, but that friend happens to be the Son if Gods mother. He listens and adores her very much. Challenge for you..... tell me in the Bible where it says everything must be found in the Bible. The church was established WELL before the Bible was hemmed together (by Catholics). Btw- the word trinity isn’t in the Bible either, but we know God, Son and Holy Spirit makes the trinity up.

A little while ago I spoke with a Catholic friend & it blows my mind how much misunderstanding there was both ways. While I personally have deep-rooted disagreements with the Catholic Church, which most often can be traced back to a fundamental disagreement around Sola Scriptura, I think that there is also a lot to be learned from each other & a lot that we can come together around.

The Eucharist is the center of faith, for eating it is how He is invited into our life. Think about how a piece of bread is transformed by the digestive system...it becomes your blood, flesh, and bone. That is how Our Lord dwells in us and we in Him. There is no other way for that to happen. John 6:51 "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. John 6:66
Question: If He was speaking symbolically then why did some of His disciples leave? They saw His face...they heard the tone of His voice they concluded He meant what He said, which sounded whole lot like cannibalism.
There is only one Church our is the head of...His Apostolic Catholic Church.

To answer your question, the text reveals that the reason some disciples left is because they couldn't accept that Jesus claimed to be equal with God. They were not able to swollow this teaching. The emphasis of the passage is " believing" but it is put in the context of "eating" because that is why the crowd returned. In v. 26 Jesus said " ye seek me because ye did eat and were filled". The word " believe" is used 6 times in the passage and that is the mental and spiritual action that is called for here, not physical eating.

    • @flearhcp
      @flearhcp 4 года назад +3

Could you further elaborate on how their return is related to believeing?
From how i see it, Jesus is teaching them to not seek for the earthly bread that physically keeps them satiated but the true bread, the Eucharist, his body and blood to be consumed for eternal life. Its almost the parallel to the event with the woman at the well. But now with flesh in contrast to water.

Jerome Popiel ...the word that Jesus used for the word eat was“trogo” , to munch or grind, not as in casual eating. So yes, He literally said munch on His flesh. What did the Jews do at Passover? They sacrificed and roasted an unblemished lamb, and everyone had to eat it, and they had no choice. In the NT, we have to eat the lamb, and who is this lamb? Jesus, the Lamb of God. He was sacrificed for us that we may live, so He commanded us to eat his flesh or we will die. It’s not symbolic. God bless!

Excellent video! Wonderful attitude. We share one baptism. I’m Catholic. So many objections to the Catholic faith are not based on what the Catholic faith actually IS, but rather on what some people SAY it is. And I like how you don’t undersell the differences, as these are often on very important issues (like our belief in a continuous priesthood started by Christ and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist as instituted at the Last Supper). But, we both agree that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, and the only way to the Father. That is a pretty significant building block of commonality to start from! We are all imperfect and need to be open to the Holy Spirit to guide us - and not just on whether to accept certain dogmatic claims, but in how we live out our lives on a daily basis and strive for obedience to the commands to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love others as He loved us. Pretty tall tasks He gives us! Peace.

Tradition came before the Bible, before the Apostles wrote anything. Tradition is on equal standing with Scripture because Scripture is part of Tradition.
We pray to Mary and all the Saints(including Angels) because they are alive and part of the Church in the presence of God. Also, if you read Revelations you will see the Saints/Angels and Elders bringing prayers to God. And lastly prayer and worship are two different things. Worship can be part of prayer but prayer isnt necessarily worship. Prayer literally means 'to ask' or 'request'.
And lastly us Catholics have had 2000 years of scholarship on Tradition and Scripture. So our theology is very very sound. Also, saying we dont know the Bible (especially since we go through most of it every 3 years during Mass if you go every Sunday and 2.5 years if you go every day) is laughable. Now we might not know verse numbers but if you tell us what story you're talking about we will know what you're talking about having heard it at least 7 times by the age of 21. Obviously we hear different verses more often depending on various things.
And like you said in the video...The more you look into the historicity of the faith the more you cease to be protestant..

    • @GospelSimplicity
      @GospelSimplicity  4 года назад +5

Hey LB, thanks for the thoughtful response! A couple thoughts.
While I'll grant that the Bible is part of Tradition, I don't think it logically follows to say that "because X is part of Y, X and Y are equal." For instance, both the Constitution and Jim Crow laws are equally part of US legal tradition, but I don't think they're equal. Furthermore you could say that the Constitution is part of US Legal Tradition, and in fact comes after some parts of US tradition, but I don't think it makes all US tradition equally authoritative, or even the tradition itself.
As for praying to Mary/the saints, it's an interesting point of contention between Protestants and Catholics. My point in bringing it up was more of an illustration than a truth claim. In other words, my discomfort was more experiential because of its foreignness than intellectual because I had examined it biblically. With that being said, given that Jesus is our mediator, at best it seems redundant. In any case, it's a point I'm willing to concede more so than others.
Again, while I appreciate the truthfulness of the proposition (Catholics have 2,000 years of scholarship) the conclusion doesn't logically follow. However, before dissecting that, it's worth noting that in the video I agreed that it's unfair to claim Catholics don't know the Bible. In any case, length of scholarship isn't a necessary condition for true doctrine. While a long history can be helpful, it could in many ways be hurtful as well. Having a long line of scholarship moving in one direction more or less (which seems to be the claim of the Catholic church) simply means a long movement in a certain direction. That could be in line with truth the whole way, or, if it started slightly off, then time would just compound the error, moving further and further. Granted, that gets into a complex question of static/dynamic but in either case, length of scholarship does not necessitate truthfulness. However, I'll grant that it's a neat thing, and not something to be scoffed at.
For your final point, for now I think we'll just have to agree to disagree.
All in all though, I've enjoyed thinking over your response, and I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!

@@GospelSimplicity The Bible denies that it is sufficient as the complete rule of faith. Paul says that much Christian teaching is to be found in the tradition which is handed down by word of mouth (2 Tim. 2:2). He instructs us to “stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15).
This oral teaching was accepted by Christians, just as they accepted the written teaching that came to them later. Jesus told his disciples: “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me” (Luke 10:16). The Church, in the persons of the apostles, was given the authority to teach by Christ; the Church would be his representative. He commissioned them, saying, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19).
And how was this to be done? By preaching, by oral instruction: “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ” (Rom. 10:17). The Church would always be the living teacher. It is a mistake to limit “Christ’s word” to the written word only or to suggest that all his teachings were reduced to writing. The Bible nowhere supports either notion.

@@GospelSimplicity Christ is our one mediator/intercessor, yet, St. Paul commands all Christians to be intercessors/mediators. Then notice the first word in verse five: “For there is one God and one mediator…” And then in verse seven he says, “For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle.” What is an apostle if not a mediator? The very definition of apostle, according to Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, is “a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders.” That’s an essential part of what a mediator is. In short, St. Paul says we are all called to be mediators because Christ is the one mediator and for this reason he was called to be a mediator of God’s love and grace to the world!
The fact that Jesus is our one mediator does not preclude him from communicating this power by way of participation. The Bible also declares: “But you are not to be called Rabbi, for you have one teacher, (Gr. - didaskolos) and you are all brethren.” This text cannot be any clearer, yet James 3:1 and Ephesians 4:11 tell us we have many teachers (Gr. - didaskoloi) in the Church. The key is to understand that the many teachers and mediators in the body of Christ do not take away from Christ as the one teacher and mediator because they are, in a sense, Christ on this earth and they serve to establish his offices of teacher and mediator in him. As members of the body of Christ graced with a specific task by Christ they can say with St. Paul in Galatians 2:20, “It is not I, but Christ who [teaches] in me…”
And remember, we are not talking about necessity here. The Church is not claiming Christ couldn’t get the job done so he needed help. Of course not! He could do it all-and all by himself- But he chooses not to do everything himself, strictly speaking. He delights in using his body to communicate his life and love to the world.
A surface reading of I Timothy 2:5 would seem to eliminate the idea of Christians “mediating” graces to one another: “There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ.” Protestants will argue, “If Jesus is our one mediator, then Christ alone mediates grace. In saying anyone else can, Catholics are usurping and thereby denying Christ’s singular role as mediator. That’s blasphemy!”
The Catholic Church actually acknowledges Christ to be our one and absolutely unique mediator who alone can reconcile us to the Father in a strict sense. In his classic, The Catholic Catechism, Fr. John Hardon explains:
… the Incarnation corresponds to mediation in the order of being, and the Redemption (remission of sin and conferral of grace) is mediation morally.
This kind of mediation is incommunicable. No one but the Savior unites in himself the divinity, which demands reconciliation, and the humanity, which needs to be reconciled.
Nevertheless, lesser and subordinate mediators are not excluded. The question is what purpose they serve and in what sense do they mediate. They can help the cause of mediation in the only way that human beings (or creatures) can contribute to the work of salvation, namely, by their willing response to grace; either better disposing themselves or others for divine grace, or interceding with God to give his grace, or freely cooperating with grace when conferred.
The context of I Timothy 2:5 demonstrates Fr. Hardon’s point. In the first two verses, St. Paul commands “supplications, prayers and intercessions to be made for all men…” Intercession is a synonym for mediation. Hebrews 7:24-25 refers to Jesus acting as our one mediator at the right hand of the Father and refers to him as intercessor:

But he chooses not to do everything himself, strictly speaking. He delights in using his body to communicate his life and love to the world.
Perhaps the most important image for the People of God in Scripture for understanding our topic, whether we are talking about the “mediation of all grace” with reference to the Mother of God, or the mediation of graces through the prayers and sufferings of other members of the Church, is given to us in I Corinthian 12, when St. Paul describes the Church as a body. CCC 753:
In Scripture, we find a host of interrelated images and figures through which Revelation speaks of the inexhaustible mystery of the Church. The images taken from the Old Testament are variations of a profound them: the People of God. In the New Testament, all these images find a new center because Christ has become the head of this people, which henceforth is his Body. Around this center are grouped images taken from the life of the shepherd or from cultivation of the land, from the art of building or from family life and marriage.

When I came back to the Lord, my intention was "to find" a church--through Catholic Charismatic Renewal I found the Church I was NOT looking for! One thing I have learned to do throughout the years, especially when I encounter teachings, readings, ideas, etc. I do not understand or have a hard time accepting is to bring it to the Lord in prayer. I have never been disappointed. Lots of people have lots of ideas and interpretations and so on, but I want to know what the Lord wants. He has shown me very clearly I am to be in the Catholic Church and to accept all aspects of it---it is a sure and firm foundation. (p.s. Mary is Jesus' mother and she is also mine; He gave her to us when he was on the Cross. She loves me (all of us actually because we are ALL her children) and I certainly love her! why don’t Catholics read the bible? There wouldn’t have had a bible if there was no Catholic Church. The Catholic Church actually encourages the faithful to read it. She just discourages Catholics to privately interpret it as what Martin Luther did and advise which protestants do and follow which resulted to confusion, tens of thousands of denominations including cults [and cultic fake prophet] disagreeing and contradicting each other. The Catholic Church wants the faithful to humble and submit themselves to the authority and be discipled as what great Saints in history did such as St Francis of Assisi, St Benedict, St Bernard, St Dominic and the blessed virgin Mary herself etc. There are many who claim to be Catholics but not truly Catholics just for example Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi etc. They’re not Catholics.

Hello! As a Catholic, I can understand your concerns. They are very common among non-Catholics. The fact is, we do read the Bible!! A lot!!! 4 readings are read at each Sunday Mass (1 old testament, 1 psalm, 1 Paul's letters and a Gospel reading). In fact, if you went to daily Mass every day for 3 years (which many people do, or at least read the daily readings) you will have heard the whole entire Bible read aloud to you. Hope that helps!! Check out Catholic. Com and search for articles on this topic for more info. God bless!

Thank you for your honest assessment. I started out Protestant (Lutheran) and became Catholic. That was 40 years ago. Then about 8 years ago I went through a 4 year Catholic Biblical School and became certified. You are also correct that. Some of our church history was heretical. This is how the Protestant church began with Martin Luther in the 1500s. But we have to remember that the basis of the Catholic faith is unchanged. It was the heretical people who gave the faith the bad name. There are many misnomers that are believed by Protestant churches the classic being that we “worship Mary” which is so untrue. We do believe the biblical teaching on Mary and her God given role in Christian faith. Also papal infallibility doesn’t mean that we worship the pope, and it doesn’t mean he is like a god, or that he never makes mistakes. There have been some pretty awful popes who are probably in hell. This doesn’t mean all Catholics agree with everything they do. But we try to respect the office, (like respecting the president even if we don’t agree with him) in fact right now we are going through hell with the things our current Pope Francis is doing like bringing a pachamama idol into St Peter’s basilica during the Amazonian synod. Or that some priests and bishops were pedophiles. This doesn’t make the church bad. It makes those people bad. It has been predicted by seers and mystics that our church would undergo demonic attacks. And we are here now with he sex scandal and idol worship that the pope condoned. But our dogma, or catechism of the faith is unchanged since Peter the apostle was our first pope. There are a lot of teachings though that I believe angry ministers have carried into their churches and taught unsuspecting Protestants ( I was Protestant) and they are mixed up unfounded things, which is frustrating. We are all God’s children and I would hope in the end we all want the same thing, although, I have been told by Protestants that I am going to hell because I am Catholic, and that all Catholics are going to hell. I wonder... did Jesus tell you that? It is hurtful and untrue, just as I would not say this about my Protestant brothers and sisters. God bless you for you calm approach to the subject and I pray that your uncle is continuing his faith journey into the church.

Agreed. Every institution, organization etc that are ran by humans is going to be flawed. We are a broken church because it’s filled with broken people. You can find those same broken people in Protestant churches, the Orthodox Church etc.
My focus is on Christ. I converted to Catholicism when I was 19 so 5 years ago and I haven’t looked back. My relationship with Christ has actually deepened in the catholic faith and it hurts when people say I’m going to hell or that I worship satan or something.

I've been using this extended quarantine to study more about theology and church history and the more I learn, the more things start to make sense. All I can say is that you should keep looking for answers yourself, rather than rely on only what one person tell you. That's my main issue with protestants, some (not all) will take the word of their pastor as if it were the word of God himself.

I'm a Catholic and I've been to a Protestant bible study many times. I've notices small differences.
    1. Protestants tend to focus purely on the Bible and have practically no references outside the Bible. The Catholic bible studies on the other hand, tend to bring in a lot more outside sources: Church fathers, quotes from Popes, and is more holistic.
    2. Protestants tend to use the bible like an instruction manual for life. A focus on day to day life advice. A lot of Catholic bible studies are focused more on theology, learning about transubstantiation, the trinity, etc.
    3. There tends to be a difference in tone. Protestant bible studies are more legal, reading the bible like a lawyer. Catholics tend to be more mystical, especially if you have lectio divina in a bible study.
    4. There is a difference in the way we treat the bible physically. Even within the Mass, the Bible is incensed, kissed and marked with a sign of the cross. I never got more angry seeing a Protestant put the bible on the floor. I've never seen a Catholic in my life write in or highlight the bible. That's just not something we do.
Just some differences I've noticed. Feel free to add anything you may have noticed.

These are interesting observations, Moses! I would agree more or less with all of these. I think one thing I’ve noticed is that most Evangelical Protestants at least seem a bit more biblically fluent than Catholics I’ve met, but not as far as stereotypes might make it seem. I think for most evangelicals Bible study is the center of spiritual growth, whereas for Catholics it seems to be one of many ways to grow. Do you think that’s fair?

@@GospelSimplicity No offense taken. Catholics believe scripture is certainly "profitable" according to 2 Tim 3 but that doesn't necessarily mean "equally profitable." There is quite simply a lot in the Bible that is not very useful for day to day life (see the extensive descriptions of the tabernacle in Exodus or the descriptions of the second temple in the last chapters of Ezekiel). The traditional Catholic cycle of readings is actually pretty handy. Simply attending Mass weekly or daily gets you enough material.
The lectionary on Sundays in particular is arranged with readings from Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and New Testament. Usually the lectionary does a great job of picking readings that go well together. For example, on good friday we read Isaiah 53 (the suffering servant) along with Hebrews 4 and the Gospel being the Passion narrative. The perfect mix. You would imagine my surprise walking into a protestant church for the first time where the entire sermon was based on 8 verses of scripture!

I’m 55 and I just started going to Latin Mass and truly learning about the Catholic Church even though I would go on occasion and was married in the Catholic Church and our sons received their sacraments. If only I knew what a beautiful faith it was. I just did not receive a good catechism but now I feel so blessed to be Catholic and eager to continue on my Catholic journey.

I am catholic, and sometimes I follow protestant pastors' teachings on RUclips, and protestant youtubers as well. Just like you, I learn a lot even though I might not agree with one thing once in a while. I think as Christians we should all unite; that way we would bring more people to Christ. We're all just one big family.

Thank you bro. I appreciate this video on so many levels. As a Catholic, I enjoy diff evangelical podcasts and bible studies too. And through still stay true to my identity and faith. Like you, I see the differences but what unites us is our love for our Lord. And in times like this, shouldn’t we at least aim for unity, even among the diversities at the tenant of our beliefs?
Anyway, love how you respond to the comments too. Really shows the love in you. Stay blessed!

It’s truly my pleasure. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video! It sounds like we share a lot in common when it comes to our approach to this. To your hypothetical about aiming for unity, I say yes and amen. God bless!
