THE LOST BOYS 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW

  • A belated review of Joel Schumacher's 1987 classic starring Jason Patrick, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman with the cinematography from the one and only Michael Chapman. Is it a horror film or a comedy? I think it's a bit of both but whatever the case it's all served up with great style, glamour and a rock soundtrack that will surely mean it still appeals to a young audience today.
    The image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1 and the original Dolby Stereo has been re-worked into DTS-HD 5.1.

    I was a teenager when I saw the first theatrical run. Perfect age. Had a big impact on me. Got the 4K first day and watched it with my teenage sons. It still works. And the transfer was great. That’s the best thing about 4K. It gives me a chance to not only revisit but give my kids the best experience. Presentation matters.

      I was already into my twenties by the time THE LOST BOYS was released Jon and I was passed this sort of horror flick at the time. Today I'm able to appreciate it for what made it a success. If I'd have been a few years younger I think I'd have seen it many times down the years but then I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it so much a few nights ago. It's not the transfer that makes the 4K look so good, it was a fabulous looking film from the original shoot owing to the abilities of Michael Chapman and the wonderful negative stocks available at the time. Today it just takes a scan of each frame followed by someone who can grade and master the resultant video to resemble the original film prints as closely as possible.
      John.

      13 was probably the perfect age to see The Lost Boys. I expect teenagers were the prime demographic audience and it hit the spot perfectly. I was too old in 1987 but today I'm able to see why it proved so popular and has stood the test of time. Phantasm had a similar effect on me and I think I was 16 when I first saw that. John.

This one and Fright Night are 2 throw back films that I truly enjoy watching and appreciate as I've gotten older. This was filmed in my hometown of Santa Cruz aka “Santa Carla.” I saw them when they were filming in the comic book store, which was downtown, not on the wharf. Corey Haim was hanging around while they were setting up shots. The owner of the comic store is in the scene. The reason they changed the name of the town to Santa Carla is because in the early 70s Santa Cruz was known as the murder capitol of the world because the were two serial killers running around and the town was trying to get over the association with the name. Fun film, good soundtrack.

    • @moviecollector5920

      And I thought the comic book store was a set that was re-dressed into the video store. You've cleared that up for me then. I had heard about the serial killers which I think was mentioned in one of the extras. I went through them all but they were all dated 2004 so I expect most fans of the film will have seen them all before.

      The hairstyle alone would have been enough Barry but what an elfin, beautiful face her hair was framing. Apparently Jason Patric recommended her for the part and as he was rather reticent to sign on Joel Schumacher took a look at her and it may have been his agreement to cast her that finally got young Mr. Patrick on board. I was on the HMV site yesterday and it's in the 2 for £25 deal which is still a bargain so worth thinking about perhaps. It's a full frame anamorphic 35mm and that is why it looks so good. This was before the switch to the lesser quality Super 35 had really taken hold as a result of digital effects animation being easier on images which had been shot without a squeeze lens. There are always minor aberrations with any anamorphic lens so that is apparently the reason for Super 35 getting increasing usage.

    Saw this the cinema in 4K last year - was beautiful (I’m 40 so,obviously never seen it in the cinema ). One of the best horror comedies (if not the best) ever made. Soundtrack, comedy. Characters, plot, twists and pacing. 10/10 - maybe Fright Night challenges it - but overall I consider this classic.
    Shame about the case artwork though…

      Morning Clark. A good summary of why the film is a success there. But I do like the inlay for this one. I never much cared for the original poster whereas the colours of this inlay look rather nice. Not the best we've ever seen but it did need something more modern and enticing to tempt people to notice it on the shelves of video stores all over the world... well, in Britain anyway. John.

    My only previous version of this was when I had it on VHS back in the day, and by "the day" I mean probably about 10-11 years ago when I was 10. I bought myself a small VHS 4:3 TV combo to play games on and my local charity shop was giving away VHS' that they had for free frequently and this was one that I got and I really liked it, but I really loved it on the 4k, think it is one great looking picture. Thank you Erik. I saw The Fugitive at the Warner West End and it looked fabulous even if the sound system appeared to have been wired up with the front left and right to the rear speakers. It was deafening. About a year later it was suddenly announced as a Super 8 feature and I snapped up a first run copy. It looks wonderful and that's from a 35mm general release print into a 16mm reduction negative and then to double run Super 8. That information should confirm to everyone that the original shoot was top quality and apparently that man Michael Chapman was DP on The Fugitive too so maybe that's a big reason. But a long of films from this period looked astounding so we shouldn't be surprised they are creating excellent 4K discs.

      @@moviecollector5920 My pleasure.
      Yes, films from the early 1990s looked astounding, and I wonder *why* they _did_ look so astounding, at least in relative comparison to analog films that came later. As we've discussed before, analog films have been increasingly _not_ *finished* on film since the early 2000s, but I believe there's more to it than that; I think early 90s films still look more astounding than films that have been shot and finished on film in the 2010s and 2020s.

    • @loekegaard9
      @loekegaard9 6 месяцев назад

      As you point out, John, the capabilities of craftsmen making films is one factor. Perhaps one reason is that the *art* of _real_ filmmaking is getting lost. Perhaps another reason is that the capabilities of film labs is not at the levels of film labs in the 1990s.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@loekegaard9 I was told a while ago that there was an industry collaboration to dumb down image quality in cinemas and I think that was in the late 1990's. This was to prepare audiences for the downgrade to digital video projection that they planned for some time later. That ultimately came in 2011 by which time many of us had given up on cinema owing to comparatively poor quality being offered by then. The process of finishing a film in computer video editing software had already commenced and it is that process that I am convinced is eliminating the possibility of film prints of the quality we knew in the 1990's. Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER does seem to have given good evidence for this even if it hasn't conclusively proved it. The example I always cite is LAST NIGHT IN SOHO which was shot on 35mm and had 35mm prints available. However, it was finished as a lowly 2K video and that is what the 35mm prints were struck from. The quality was lost before a faux 35mm negative was created. I'd still like to own one of those faux 35mm prints though but that's the film collector enthusiast in me. I know it would be somewhat disappointing to look at but it would be a thrill to own that great film on 35mm.
      I think it was 1982 that Kodak introduced their T stocks and that seems to have been the driver of the big upsurge in image quality in cinemas. But it needs someone who knows more than I to confirm or deny all that side of it.
      John.

    • @loekegaard9
      @loekegaard9 6 месяцев назад

      @@moviecollector5920 If there was an industry collaboration to dumb down image quality in cinemas in the late 1990s then that's both aggravating and illuminating. It's *worse* than imagined.
      Concerning Kodak and their T stocks: I know remember where James Cameron talks about the film stock used for Aliens. It's on the Aliens DVD audio commentary. Cameron talks about it from the 46:52 point to the 47:53 point.
      Quote of Cameron from the audio commentary:
      "The interesting thing is that the first film was anamorphic, so it used more of the negative area. This is a 1.85 picture, and in this exact year I think Kodak was in transition. They were changing their emulsions. And this was a higher speed negative than had been used previously. They hadn't worked out their T grain emulsion. So it turned out to be grainier than I would have wanted. But this was actually the standard. This is just what that stock was that year. And because we weren't using the full negative like you would with an anamorphic film, you know, we weren't getting quite as much image quality. If I had shot Super 35, it would have looked terrible, I think, because of the graininess factor, so I was just well off that I hadn't. By the time I got ready to do the The Abyss a couple of years later, they had improved the emulsions enough that Super 35 looked pretty great. I was surprised recently when I screened this film at how grainy it was. Because nobody noticed the grain at the time. Because most films, frankly, looked like that."
      Cameron also talks about the Anamorphic format in relation to the Super 35 format from the 45:43 point to the 46:52 point in the audio commentary.
      You can listen to the audio commentary here if you're interested (but I guess you already have the DVD): ruclips.net/video/RU3crXw8fhM/видео.html

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  6 месяцев назад +1

      Morning Martyn. The LaserDisc is a bog standard NTSC item and it's not particularly special but is CAV on side one rather then the more common CLV. CAV (constant angular velocity) was slightly better quality and you could pause and step through frame by frame so probably the most versatile of all home video discs in some respects. I have the film on Super 8 and the LD was purchased to re-record the sound on that Super 8. I then got the DVD so we could lock that into sync' with the film and have Dolby Digital 5.1 with the best possibly image quality in the home at that time from the Super 8 print. The quality of the image on the Super 8 tells us all we need to know because it couldn't have been so good if the original shoot wasn't as special as it was. That is why the 4K disc has such a good reputation. But if it was scanned at 8K then it would have sucked out even more information that the usual 4K cine to video transfers. Jaws is the perfect example of this which I think was 5.6K and then shrunk down to 4K. The led me to my estimation of 35mm full frame films being closer to 6K resolution in computer terms but I don't really think the two can be equated that easily. The figures just give us a bit of an idea to compare like for like quality. John.

    Hey john, hoping your holidays were great. Got this back when it first was released and was extremely pleased. Very cinematic brought me back to the night of the theater when I saw it really could be happier. haven’t seen 8 mm probably since it was released on Home video very disturbing noticed on your video it was from the writer of seven which makes perfect sense.
    I’m sure you’ll be flooded with people telling you how good the fugitive looks and put me in with the crown it is an outstanding release. I opted for the steel book which I dearly love as the cover Harkins back to the original TV series, which I am currently watching for the first time in its entirety. I’ve seen episodes here and there over the years but really enjoying the series. I’m just about to start the final season, which is in color, the black and white looked absolutely beautiful, and the amount of guest stars that appear over the episodes is incredible. so if you get a chance definitely pick it up on 4K especially if you can get it for €10 the film is always look great but as usual the HDR is top notch on this one it really is one of the better 4K’s this year.have a great one as always, john

      Evening John. I have The Fugitive as a Super 8 feature print and that's the basis of how I know all I need to know about the 4K without even seeing it. The Super 8 prints were many generations down but they look fabulous. It's not much to do with how they were produced other than being done on the best ever 16mm negative to dual Super 8 positive reduction printer, it's down to the quality of the original shoot. Another Michael Chapman apparently so that probably has a lot to do with it.

      Salem's Lot is the one I've been thinking of that may be my favourite vampire film but it was originally a two part television drama and I think I preferred it in that format. I have the Blu-ray which appears to have been mastered from various sources, possibly including a 16mm print judging by the increased film grain suggesting a smaller gauge than 35mm. It's variable anyway but it's still a great production irrespective of it perhaps not looking quite as good as it once did. I also like Interview with a Vampire so that's another good suggestion.
      On the day David Soul's death was announced we'd been listening to his 1977 album Playing To An Audience Of One in the car. I play that one often when driving so it's not particularly unusual.

      The general rule of thumb is that if the original shoot resulted in a high quality negative and 35mm release prints then any modern video transfer will end up with good results. Mastering also comes into it but basically if the film looked good originally then it will look good as a 4K video disc. That's the case with THE LOST BOYS.

    Glad you've seen this John as I agree 100%, it's a great upghrade to the bluray, I've owned on VHS, DVD, Bluray and now 4k and finally we have what I believe is as good as it gets. Fabulous natural picture and colours and a solid boisterous sound track. BE REALLY INTERESTED to see your review on The Fugitive, I watched the 4k and while not being blown away as much as online critics and reviewers, it's a lovely lovely presentation that's filmed in a style I don't believe we see today either. Superb film which I highly rated when I seen at the flicks on original release and holds it's own today. Great performance from both leads but Tommy Lee for me is the stand out... picture is really nice and filmic... this isn't a Marvel Comic book... but you just know it's a lovely picture and sound which is used as and when really well.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  6 месяцев назад +1

      Oh, The Fugitive is a lovely looking film Mark. I don't have the 4K but I have a Super 8 film print and that really shouldn't look as good as it does but because the original shoot was of such high quality it's shrunk down to the baby gauge and that is why it's getting so much praise on 4K. Start with excellence and you end with excellence irrespective of the gauge or video format. I'm told the cinematographer was Michael Chapman the same as The Lost Boys so I reckon he had a lot to do with the good image quality. It still requires a video editor/grader and final mastering onto a disc for 4K though and it that isn't quite up to standard then things can still fall apart a little. Not in the case of The Lost Boys or The Fugitive though from all accounts.

      @moviecollector5920 Yeah just shows how much can be acheived using good film stock... I'll be honest, there's been some films that I simply have been staggered at... "The Thing" was one on 4k that astonished me... a film that was done what 40 years ago now on 35mm and looks incredible on 4k imho, one of the best out there.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@MrPugheaven I just looked up how The Thing was shot and it was on a Kodak T stock - 100T in fact. I've often cited the T stocks to people because after they were introduced there did seem to be more consistent top quality, fine grain productions. Films shot this way in general still look better than almost any digital video being shot today. There are a few exceptions and the faux film grain being applied is certainly helping but it's a shame the industry can't just shoot on the even finer grain negative stocks that are available today... and larger film formats for that matter too. We'd then still get 1990's style quality in cinemas even if the films weren't finished on film. John.

      I've never seen License To Drive but you'll have to bear in mind that no two films ever have identical quality. There are a lot of factors involved and these rarely get taken into consideration. Just because a film was shot on 35mm doesn't mean it's the same 35mm because there are a myriad of them. Best of the lot is full frame anamorphic and if I remember correctly that is what The Lost Boys is. It's possible License To Drive was a matted 1.85:1 which is lower quality. The cine to video transfer for the Blu-ray likely came from a general release print though so if the negative is still available and in good condition then that should generate a big improvement for a possible 4K release. Let's hope so.

    John can you answer a question for me regards Imax on Blu-ray? Having never been to an Imax screening I was wondering when watching a film like Oppenheimer where the scope constantly changes between full image and letterbox is that what happens in an actual Imax screening of films like Oppenheimer and Dunkirk etc or is something that only happens when we watch these films at home on Blu-ray/ 4k etc? Regards

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  6 месяцев назад

      It's the same at an IMAX. If you're in the UK there are currently three capable of screening IMAX (Manchester Printworks, Ronson Theatre in the Science Museum and the BFI IMAX) but 30 or more worldwide. Just don't get fooled by all the faux IMAX cinemas with the name emblazoned because there are hundreds of them around and they're just video projection so nowhere near the exceptional quality of genuine IMAX. Because of the huge screens in genuine IMAX houses the image ratio shifts are not so noticeable. If you're watching Blu-rays on a telly and you get these aspect ratio shifts then they stick out like a sore thumb but many people seem to enjoy all that. The re-release 4K of Batman v Superman even retained the 1.43:1 aspect ratio for the IMAX 15/70 sequences and that means black bars at the sides. Whilst not ideal for home video it does make it an interesting novelty. The best solution for the 1.43 shots is to crop them to 1.78:1 as is the case with most of them that retain an aspect ratio shift unlike Mission Impossible 4 which is consistently the 'Scope 2.40:1 (approximately) ratio throughout. That's a shame because that skyscraper sequence is sensational enough in 'Scope but surely even more fear inducing at 1.78:1 and particularly in a genuine IMAX at 1.43:1.

      @@darkpoethd9913 Check that they're screening something in 15/70 first otherwise it will just be a 4K projection passed off as 'laser' which actually refers to the lamp source in the projector and not a load of lasers forming an image on screen as many believe. OPPENHEIMER might still be getting an occasional airing and as much as it's brilliant I don't think it's as impressive an IMAX experience as TENET, DUNKIRK, INTERSTELLAR and possibly even THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Oppenheimer is a drama whereas the others are action adventures and therefore better suited to the huge screen and unmatched image quality on show. The sound should knock you out of your seat on occasion with any of them though.

      Evening Gary. I won't be wowed by The Fugitive as I have one of the rare, fabulous Super 8 prints. That looks brilliant, it looked brilliant on 35mm general release at the Warner West End in 1993 and that is why the 4K discs look great. Nothing to do with the cine transfer, it's how it looked and it's shrunk down successfully. That's the basis of any review video I do on it which I think might be a bit of a good education for some. We'll see. I've never seen The Patriot. After the fiction of Braveheart, Mel Gibson was a little out of favour over here.

The film did actually cause a lot of problems over here but Scotland finally seems to be getting over it now and turning away from those who have fostered the hatred ever since. Shocking really. Apocalypse Now was a commentary on the futility of it all and it hit the spot as opposed to Braveheart which was a work of fiction that people took as fact. Titanic also had one scene with a clear prejudice in it that changed history from what actually happened and turned a life saving hero on the night into a murderer. That's one of the reasons why I struggle to watch that one. That is another that I haven't seen in a long time but I have Stand By Me and coincidentally nearly put it on again last night. We're trying to check a lot of our 4K discs because without even searching for problems I had found six that had developed faults whereby they would either not play when the bad area was encountered or they'd skip several minutes after stopping and struggling for some time. So far I've only found one other faulty disc out of about ten we've checked all the way through. If it remains a 10% fault ratio it's going to cost quite a lot in replacements though.

      Evening Andy. I haven't seen the Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4K release but I've been told so many times that it's similar to the Predator Blu-ray. The reason they look fake is because the mastering process was creating them for 3D abominations and probably to maximize the 3D effect all trace of film grain was removed. This has the side effect of removing other detail from the frame. Someone evidently thought that as they had a 4K master file ready to go they might as well slap it out as a 4K disc but it wasn't the best idea. I saw it as a 70mm blow-up, my colleague has a 35mm print and I have a Super 8 that came from that same 35mm general release print by way of a 16mm reduction negative. All are excellent quality. So one day T2 will get a re-release. Until that time you'll have to keep a lookout for a film print to get the best out of that one.

Even more impressive when you know its origins which was from many generations down. That quality tells us all we need to know about why the 4K is as good as being reported but people keep mistaking the quality as being due to the cine to video transfer. It's how it looked originally coupled with good grading and mastering to match the original film prints so little or nothing to do with the machine that handled the scan of each negative frame. It's a common error so I was thinking I might start to ram it down people's throats a little more from now on.
