  • Another semi-sequel to my Evolution of the Daleks video, covering all the current television appearances and audio appearances of the Doctor's Intellectual Equal and creator of his worst enemy... Davros.
    Over the years Davros has been played by: Michael Wisher, David Gooderson, Terry Molloy, Rory Jennings, Julian Bleach, Joey Price & Ben Crystal.
    Doctor Who is a BBC owned property, Davros & the Daleks are the property of the Terry Nation estate, I make no claim of ownership of any of these properties.

    I'm actually going to miss this iteration of Davros. Such a broken, yet amazing, character. Possibly one of the best in Doctor Who's entire rogue gallery.

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 6 месяцев назад +7

      @@nataliecameron I'm well aware of it, though that's not the point. The point is Russell is not planning to use this previous iteration in the near or far future to appease "social sensibilities", meaning it's a deliberate omission of the show's past history (and Russell made that very clear). Add that to meaningless (yet fundamental) changes to Terry Nation's work and his characters just for a quick gag and you have a strange recipe.
      Personally, I feel that "change of focus" is going to do more harm than good because it leaves the human aspect out of the question for disabled people (which was Russell's main topic of conversation). Don't get me wrong, I was always curious about pre-Genesis stuff, but after that special... I feel I need a break from it.

      Micheal Wisher sounds like he'
      strictly a military researcher, with occasional moments of depravity and rage.
      Bleach is like this twisted grandpa always looking back on his heinous acts as if they were totally normal.

    Wisher and Molloy are the best Davros performers by far. However their portrayals are so different. I feel like Wisher takes the cake. He plays such a layered and complex character, a man who knows his genius and who is mostly calm and calculated...and the design from the costume department is incredible.
    Molloy plays the insane megalomaniac role very well, though.

      Where are the films where are the big famous actors and big budget cgi effect why can't we have a doctor who thats not restricted to the show and be its own film version without being made for kids. Even the 1965 and 1966 films with peter cushing was so much way ahead of its time where are the visionary writers and directors
      That's what wrong with it still in the wrong hands of people that still stuck in the past look how star trek with strange new worlds has become or star wars' there all done modern and with the times on big budget and epic scale. Dr who has become a joke for the uk we just don't have the iconic show any more its just ruined to death with crap silly written stories poor actor being made on the lowest budget possible just to keep it running on the bbc for the licence to it

      From the moment that Genesis became canon, Davros became inextricably entwined into the timeline and the story of The Doctor. His creations; with their undying quest for supremacy in the universe (not doing things by halves, talk about aiming high...) present themselves as an incessant threat for The Doctor, a threat to everything he holds dear, to him personally, to the millions of races in the universe, and ultimately including the timelords themselves.
      The Time War is the culmination of all of this- I could never have imagined as a child in 1977 (the initial airing of Genesis in Australia) the pivotal role that this lunatic and his armoured tin cans would go on to become- and every subsequent appearance of Davros and his Daleks, and the odd mentions of a "Time War", contributed more and more to a desire to see that War, and the battle for Gallifrey, played out on the screen. You can imagine my sheer and unbridled delight when "The day of The Doctor" was announced...
      So no, in hindsight; once Genesis aired, there was no going back from there- Davros was destined to make more appearances, and it was good to watch his story; his triumphs, his betrayals, his battles to regain control of the monster that he created... And he and the Daleks have become so integral to The Doctor's story that it would be hard to imagine the show without them- from a certain perspective; they have become one of the few core raisons d'etre for the show's existence at all; given how the story evolved. Without Davros and his Daleks, we would be watching a very different version of the show, if indeed it had survived at all.

    • @Dessan01
      @Dessan01 3 года назад

      @@arealassassin to be honest I wouldn’t go that far mate - after Genesis there were only 4 more stories which featured the Daleks as the main villain in the whole of the rest of the classic series, while the Daleks are an iconic part of the show, I don’t think they contributed that far to its survival.

    After all the crazy stuff between factions of this fandom, I'm honestly gonna say I needed this video, not to remind me of better times, but just as a way of seeing a far more appreciative side to the fandom. A side who doesn't attack each other for liking or disliking an era, one who doesn't state a negative opinion and refuse to see any good in something when there clearly is. Here, we all like different portrayals, but we don't dogpile each other for anti-opinions' sake. Also, I've not heard any of the audio plays (or seen the lego version) after The Davros Mission. As a followup comment, I'll just say, I saw a troll who likes classic who only (barring a few revival eps) attack somone for having an opinion different from theirs and I saw a review of an episode that misread it entirely and never even gave it a chance. I lost respect for that reviewer after that. The fact I like that episode (end of time) is beside the point. It was just a man attacking an era because he doesn't like it, though he critiqued the episisde he mocked the RTD era like it was garbage. I honestly got so mad...like, If somone doesn't like an era, fine. I personally don't like much after S5 but I don't attack anyone for liking it, nor do I deny that there are good episodes in said era(s). Example, I don't like the Chibnall era, but not because of the politics, but because I feel it's simply mediocre, however I admit, the effects are fantastic and the two dalek specials hold up really well. That's my two cents. I realize having two novel long comments is overstaying the welcome and I may have appeard to be looking down on others by saying "i'm better". i promise, i'm not, i'm just stating the reason behind my previous comment. (also, that troll I mentioned had a 100 comment thread just being full of himself and had a comment 3X as long as this...so we at least know what he likes). Thanks for reading, I won't deprive you of any more time). (Also, as for my fav Davros actor, it's a tossup between Terry and Julian).

    Molloy is the definitive Davros. He has a fantastic range as an actor, a range that occasionally gets ignored because Ressurection has him as a megolomanical villain, as does Rememberance (rightly so) but his work for Big Finish with I, Davros, Davros, Time War, Terra Firma, and more, with Revelation of the Daleks on TV too, show a multifaceted performance full of depth, unusual angles, and odd beauty that is unmatched by others. I'm sure Wisher, Gooderson, and Bleach would've been equally brilliant but they haven't had as much exposure as Molloy. He *is* Davros to me, and even as a VHS connecting child he was my favourite TV Davros too.
    I think we've been blessed with the Davros actors honestly - all four have given great performances. David Gooderson gets a bad rep, but he's simply in a mediocre story - his vocal work on the bluray trailer for S17 shows just how strong a performance he gives. Wisher is evidently fabulous - and is fabulous within a fabulous story to boot. My thoughts on Molloy are evident. Julian Bleach is similarly brilliant - the two part S9 season opener in particular showed a layered performance that sits between Wisher, Molloy and Gooderson - though I do think it a crying shame that RTD didn't bring Molloy on board Bleach does bring gives a very strong performance.
    For such a role, such a difficult role, to have been blessed by 4 brilliant actors, who all manage to convince as the same person is no mean feat; their performances are what makes Davros such a memorable villain.

    He should have died in Genesis. But this story is probably the best, most gritty and believable follow up. Full of double crossing militia and violence. If only they made it 6 parts to flesh it out more and gave more if the companions.
    Revelation was a bit slow and the DJ was crap and Remembrance was ruined by Ace’s silly baseball scene, McCoys wide eyed gurning and the Dr’s completely immoral and flippant destruction of Skaro at the end.

      Missing the point of why Davros was created, it’s because it is almost impossible for a Dalek to have a conversation without repeating the same phrases halt, stay where you are, do not move, exterminate etc. Davros can talk freely and so he was invented as a plot device. Generally to good effect. Could you imagine the Doctor having the virus conversation from Genesis with a Paradigm Dalek Scientist or Stratagem Dalek? Or the goings on in Tranquil Repose on Necros being anything more than a production line? Or the Daleks needing to rescue the Dalek Supreme from cryogenic-stasis on a prison ship? Davros brings so much more to the stories he’s in because he can converse, he can plot and scheme, he can be cunning, frustrated, angry and scared. He is relatable because he can be emotional.

    • @yussepig6629
      @yussepig6629 2 года назад +1

      Sorry @ Ed Herring, I don’t think he was created for that reason. The Daleks needed an origin story and it made total sense that they would destroy their creator. Now his appearances are increasingly silly with increasingly diminished returns. To just bring him back as a palatable mouthpiece as you’re suggesting is a poor, lazy excuse by the show runners/writers. The Dr has had perfectly palatable conversations with other ‘lead Daleks’. Go watch POTD, EOTD, and Ecclestons POTW. Just takes a bit of talent and creativity on the part of writers rather than flogging a dead horse and destroying his aura.

    • @eddherring4972
      @eddherring4972 2 года назад +1

      @@yussepig6629 it’s absolute fact that was why he was created, I thought it was common knowledge. Yes there is an abundance of poor to abysmal writing and the 4 parts making up his appearances in the new series don’t escape that in any way. If we take Davros’ ruse in Genesis “Don’t Touch that switch.” Not being able to survive without his life support is the true part of that. We see him out of his chair purely for the “Anyone for dodgems.” Supposed laugh. It’s all down to writers not understanding the character. If you see Davros in Resurrection his immediate reaction is like a father being forgiven by a son he can’t control, then he realises that things cannot be the way they were “This time they will not abuse me.” Revelation would have been great just to have had Davros without the Daleks, he’s building his new army but he’s vulnerable enough to need a decoy and he needs allies to provide financial support. In Remembrance the army is complete but it seems that the imperial forces are a little ‘green’ why is Davros there? Because he doesn’t feel the Imperial Daleks are battle ready also he’s expecting the Doctor might interfere and knows his Daleks aren’t up to that and finally how could he expect Daleks to program or control a piece of highly sophisticated alien technology which he believes is well within his own capabilities “I think I am quite capable of handling the technology.” “Does it worry you Doctor that with it I will transform Skaro’s sun into an unimaginable source of power.” Etc
      So yes Davros fits into all these stories and Destiny is just a moment to show that the character is still alive after seeming to die. The new Who stories certainly the first 2 parter Davros is not needed at all. His second 2 is just badly written with yet another Deus Ex Machina ending. In my opinion Julian Bleach’s best appearance as Davros is Doctor Who at the proms, that’s not due to the acting, I think Julian is good (not great) in the role it’s just that the stories he’s in are not good, as I say irrelevant and badly written.
      The key point is that Davros was definitely created as a communication device that is absolutely correct and indisputable.
