I had a BA Copper Spur UL2 for about 5 years and it got a 3-4" tear in the mesh of one of the doors. Sent it back to BA to be repaired. They couldn't repair it, so they sent me back a brand new one! Big Agnes is amazing!
Using my Copper Spur in North Wales, it blew down in a storm and snapped a pole, replacement sections are not available at the moment in the UK, contacted Big Agnes and they sent me a pole section from Wisconson free of charge. Great company.
I’ve been using BA tents for years, along with other brands, and they’ve held up really well. I always set it up at home following a trip, will clean up a bit, and let air dry before repacking. Works great for me!
BA rocks and has great customer service. I have three of their tents in my gear stable: a Tiger Wall UL 2 for solo BPing, a Copper Sur 3 for when I’m out with the wife or just one of my teenage kids, and a Flying Diamond 8 for car camping with the entire family (6 of us). Love their sleep systems as well.
For extended use of these tents, it is advisable that you practice extra care with the zippers. They have a tendency to lose the ability to zip over time. The reason for this is that the zipper loosens itself and eventually doesn't apply enough pressure over time. I personally experienced this issue with the copper spur hv ul1, but experiences may vary.
I have the Tiger Wall 2 and a Jack Rabbit3, I think that's what it's called. I purchased both tents on sale at REI. I paid 300.for my Tiger Wall and I use it solo. The Jack Rabbit is not the lightest tent but I split the weight with my daughter so it's fine. For me the Tiger Wall has made solo trips much more doable. I have a Granite Gear 38 L pack and a Western Mountaineering ultra 20 bag along with a bunch of other light gear. I am in my 60s so pack weight means alot. I am still doing the same or more mileage as I did 30 years ago because my pack is so much lighter. Someday I will pull the trigger on a Zpack big three. Take care. Nice channel and content, thanks. Update, pulled the trigger on a Zpacks Duplex and I love it. I took it on my hike of the Long Trail in Vermont and it’s a palace for my dog and I. Super easy to set up and the tent material is not super thin like your BA. Well worth the money.
I have the Copper Spur HV UL3 for backpacking with my daughter, and just got the Tiger Wall UL2 Solution Dye for solo trips, which I took on a 4 day / 3 night Timberline Trail loop around Mt Hood last weekend. Performed perfectly . Both are amazing tents, easy to set up, and light. Love BA stuff!
My girlfriends and I always share a 2p tent with plenty of room. There isn't a ton of extra room but it makes for warmer sleeping in cold high altitude areas too!
I have a Copper Spur UL2 HV. Love the quality, headroom, and the weight. The only issues I have with it are that it's a trapezoid instead of a rectangle, and that the doors open at the head end instead of the foot. If the tent were a rectangle our rectangular sleeping pads would fit well with no binding. Having the door opening at the foot also makes swinging one's feet in and out of the tent far easier, though it does make zipping the doors harder. I also have an REI Half Dome which opens at the foot which is why I even have an opinion on the matter.
i bought the tiger wall UL2 almost 2 years ago when you recommended it and I've never been happier. It holds up really well in high winds and rain (tested). Easy to put up quickly in rain (tested). I should quit camping when it rains...
@@adamkrecl I haven't had any issues. Still going strong. Definitely get a ground cover (i use tyvek). Its great in wind. I've had no moisture issues as long as the rain fly is tied down so there's a space between it and the mesh shell. Solid tent in my experience. Even keeps noseeums out (beach camping)
I would still buy another BA tent! My 1st was about 5 years old when It ceased being waterproof. BA gave me my purchase price credit for the tent and I bought another at a great price. I bought the copper spur HVUL1 bike packing tent in May. After 6 total nights of use, in August I discovered about 40% of the seam tape was loosening on the fly and some on the tent. BA would repair it and include free shipping but warned me it could take a while due to staffing. Luckily, where I purchased it online worked with me and they got a replacement tent sent out once FedEx had scanned my defective tent. I have 3 BA tents & 1 BA s.bag. The HVUL1 is my favorite. Sure, it's small but it keeps my pack weight down. The vestibule is monstrous! The storage is great. With my 21.5 in sleeping pad I have enough room on either side to set up my bag and other stuff in the tent. The vent up top was a key selling point for me. The zippers are quite good with a tiny bit of care taken.
I got the Scout 2 Carbon. I fabbed the rear pole, made a footprint, ditched the stakes (which are worthless in the Sierra) and replaced them with pads (circles of tarp material), and use BOTH of my poles to prop up the front so I don't have to dodge to get out, and added a second front guy for the same reason. All in all, with a bag to hold it all, 22 oz. I do not actually use a tent unless it is raining, so light is right.
The BA Tiger Wall UL2 is the first tent I have ever owned, used it on two weekend trips now and I really like it. Very easy to set up for a newbie like me. Also plenty of space for me and all my gear, when using an extra wide sleeping pad. Wouldn’t share it with another person though, in that case I would go for the UL3 version. Only downside for me is the non adjustable guylines on the tent. Makes it harder to pitch for a beginner like me. Also after rain, when the nylon has started to sag a bit, I needed to redo all the stakes of the rainfly to tighten the pitch. Would’ve been a lot easier if the guylines were adjustable instead of precut.
I've done about 30 nights in Copper Spur UL2. So far, so good. My first UL tent was REI brand and only lasted me 14 months before every zipper was toast. I'm 7 months in on this one.
When my husband & I go together, we bring the Copper Spur 3. He's 6'3" and needs the headroom. We call it 'the condo' 😄 If it's just myself & my daughter, we take a Nemo Hornet 2. 2 good tents! 🐻🌲🐻
Thanks for the video!! I have the Fly Creek UL2 for solo backpacking trips, the Tiger Wall UL3 for when I backpack with my GF, and the Copper Spur UL4 for car camping. Love them all and they work awesome!
I LOVE my Copper Spur, I don’t have the mtn glow. No need. With the awning you can also unzip both zippers and just stuff the square back under the rain fly and over the mesh for easy open door access. I’ve had it rain once and used the awning as intended sitting in a backpack chair. Worked great. I had the tiger wall, but I live in the Sierra which is basically granite. I could not ONCE stake it out properly with the semi-free standing ends, so gave up and got the copper spur. I’ve used it backpacking and travel car camping and have slept in it at least 60 nights with -0- issues.
I used the FlyCreek2Platnium for the past 8 years or so and loved it! Always cramped, but it was worth the trade off on how ultralight and compressible it was … Fast-forward to now, we have a 2 year old and decided to “upgrade” to the CopperSpur3… AND OH MY GOODNESS it’s huge!!!! So luxuriously and where we’re at in our lives now, it is SO worth the extra weight and size! We love the CopperSpur3 now and I would say it’s now my favorite tent of all time
I have the Tiger Wall 2 Platinum. The tent + dyneema stuff sack + fly + poles + cordage comes out to 2 lbs 1 oz on my scale (I believe they advertise 2 lb 4 oz). Great tent. Not a lot of storage inside.
Love this video. I backpacked when I was a kid and your videos are getting me back into it. I’m 57 years old and banged up but I think I can find some short distance hikes here in Southern Oregon.
Beautiful B roll at the beginning and end of the video. Makes me wanna go backpacking. I have been watching videos for about 4 years now, still have not taken the plunge.
BA is a solid brand that makes great freestanding tents for experienced users. I only say that because you have to realize they are using light materials that require more care/caution than your typical newb is prepared to deal with. Inevitably (probably sooner than later) they will tear or break the tent and then blame the tent for their mistakes or carelessness. They aren't the end all be all, but you'd be hard pressed not to find a good tent for most people in their lineup.
Recently bought a Big Agnes Sheep Mountain 3. It's sort of heavy but it's tough and built to last, simple design, sets up quickly. Can confirm the customer service is very good! I had a bunch of questions before purchasing that I sent via email and they took care of me same day. Glad to see that others have had similar experiences and that the company stands behind their products.
Woah...that's a cool way to set up some shade/rain cover with the tarp tensioned on four trekking poles. I've seen it done with two poles, but rarely four. Can you show us how you did that? Or explain through the comments? Thanks for your upload as always!
My favorite part about Big Agnes is their warranty and repair service. I had a zipper go out on my tent and I could send it in for repair. In the end, they could not repair it and they ended up replacing my tent with a new one.
I have the tigerwall 2p and the copper spur 2p being delivered soon. Looking forward to trying them both out and seeing which one I prefer. Right now I'm leaning towards the copper spur.
I've used big Agnes tents for close to 20 years and love them, but I just took a Copper Spur out of storage (2 years) and the shock cord is totally shot!! It's so slack I can barely stuff it back into the poles to set it up.
I had a similar issue with my Copper Spur and BA replaced the cord and a couple of bent poles under warranty. The tent is over 3 years old and they fixed and replaced parts for free! Great service. Just create a repair report on their website.
So glad you made it to Montana and can see why I love living here so much! Hope it wasn't too smokey!! Can't wait to get myself on a backpacking trip along the Beaten Path! I love my BA Copper Spur tent! So lightweight and easy to set up!
Are you aware of any B.A. models that require, or benefit from after-market seam sealing of rain fly, (with the sealer for Sil-Nylon of course)? When new, and/or after a few uses?
My family owns the TW ul3 and the zpack triplex. I will choose the twul3 every time. I like the pockets the roominess and vestibules. I feel like the triplex allows more wind in the tent than the TW too
I have the Scout Plus, that weighs a kilo I has a full vestibule that relieves all the inner space It is big enough to manage two people, and with one it is a palace Single skin so deal with condensation but it is very well ventilated with the open netting being under the tent eves it runs off the damp Unfortunately discontinued . I also have the Fly Creek 2 which is an excellent easy to pitch one person tent Also just over 1 kilo not as weather rugged as the Scout Plus
My lightest tent tent is a BA Scout UL2 and it's *fine*. It's shelter and it's light, but it's kind of a moisture trap and that inside trekking pole is a pain to deal with when you kick it over at night. However the lightness and compactness and ease definitely make it a worthwhile piece of kit. It's fine.
Dan ! I have been camping and hiking for over 30 years. The best sleep I ever had on the trail was in a hammock in the snow and I stayed warm in high winds. I was amazed ! That was my first night hammock camping. I am a dyed in the wool believer now.
I've always liked Big Agnes designs but that colored mesh has got to be optional or limited to certain models. White or colored mesh limits visibility of stars and your surroundings. Nice for privacy in camp grounds or groups though. Turn on a light at night inside and you see nothing through white mesh compared to black.
I was desperate to have at least one BA item and the only thing I could afford was a sleeping quilt, which I love ! Can you say what tarp you were using here?
Im planning on buying a version of the Big House 4 with the full fly. I was going to go with a Kelty Wireless 6 but this model of the Big House is discontinued and on sale for a great price. I just do car camping.
I've been searching for more videos too as I just bought this tent. Let me know if you find any and your initial impressions please! I've been worried I should have paid more $$$ for a lighter weight but I still think 3lbs 11oz isn't terrible...?
Just curious the tiger wall looks so light and almost translucent I would have hard time falling asleep, ba bike version is a darker grey color but is not available in reg version is it an issue , im sure you don't sleep in while backpacking but would be nice once in a while
I got a one person tent once at Walmart 7 years ago that I take on my backpacking adventures. $39.99 at the time and it's very light. Byfar the best tent I've ever owned. People don't need to be spending so much on tents. Half the time I cowboy camp under the stars with no tent in the desert anyways. Mummy bag and sleeping pad is what I rather spend more money on for quality
Older gear was made decently. Today's stuff is made cheaply and hastily. Unless you pay for proper craftsmanship, you get total crap that will let you down.
In the world of camping gear, I know a lot can change in a couple years. I'm looking for a lightweight backpacking tent that can sleep 3 with 25" sleeping pads. It is really hard to find anything unless I go up to a 4-person tent. I'm looking at the Copper Spur for that reason and saw this video. I have been enjoying your content and would appreciate your insight. Do you know of any 3-person backpacking tents that are at least 75" wide or what 4-person tent would you suggest?
I've been using my Big Agnes UlL Scout 2 for years and love it. It's a single wall as well but that has been my only gripe. Great video Dan. I did spy that St Croix rod strapped to your pack though. Are you a fly guy or a spin fishing guy. You should do a video on your camping fishing gear.
The Tiger Wall Platinum also does not have vents in the fly - another difference. (It’s what kept me from getting the platinum version of the Copper Spur). I personally did not like the Tiger Wall because the foot end is so shallow with only a ridge pole there. My footbox would actually push the mesh against the fly and get wet from condensation.
Montana is gorgeous and the mountain hiking is limitless. My boys and I just did a 56 mile/6 day hike into the Bob Marshall Wilderness in to the Chinese Wall. It was the most amazing time. Check it out 😉 Dan Becker....you would LOVE this area also!
Good video. Thanks. Wife and I Just bought and used the copper spur 3 mtn glo last week in Colorado in all day rain at crater lake and woke up to snow ❄️ it performed very well.
Are you on the beaten path? You are in my back yard! We were supposed to go last year but switched trails. Sounds like it’s going to be closed to the full hike for awhile due to flooding and washed out bridges.
I run 2 tents....a marmot fortress 3 p for winter runs and when the dog is with me...the copper spur ul is what I run when I'm going lite.... Both are excellent tents so far
That tent really compares more to the tiger wall. Since they are both semi freestanding. But I would definitely take the tiger wall. The mountain hardware is really finicky to set up. It has very odd clip attachments to the poles. Other than that it’s a pretty good tent. But again my vote is the tiger wall.
I bought the new big agnss tiger wall ul2 bike pack, the pole cracked after the first multiday hike and then on the next one the zip flap tore. I've found it really fragile but it is super light and really spacious.
Thanks Dan. Can you show how you would set up those pitch innertent first tents in rain without the inner getting wet in a separate video? For that singelwall, wet clothes and shoes, and wet backback, no thanks😅.
My husband and I are new backpackers. We are both tall and on the large size. We were looking at a BA 2 person tent. Do you think it would be too small?
It’s a bit cramped but doable if you keep your gear in the vestibules. I’ve used a 2p with my wife and it’s been fine. But a 3p will have more wiggle room and you can split the weight between the two of you.
Some tent things are gimmicky. Thought the fly turning into an awning was too until getting my 3-door Salt Creek 3. OMFG it is awesome. Smart sunshade while allowing for airflow. But the third door is genius. Been in this industry for years and that third door is missed on my lighter tents including other Big Agnes Tiger Walk bikepacking tent. Thanks for your user insights once again
I have 2 BA tents. The Copper Spur hv2 Expedition and the Copper Spur Bikepack. Both have been amazing tents. The expedition can really take the punishment doled out by the high winds and storms at elevation. I know it's corny what they say about it being the last tent standing but I experienced just that. Went camping with a buddy when a ferocious storm hit and his tent was trashed, literally, he threw it away. The Expedition shunned the winds like nobody's business. The bikepack, although I've only had it out on a couple of occasions, seems to be of the same great quality. Both have been exposed to some heavy weather and neither has leaked a drop. My only criticism of the Expedition is how red it is inside during daylight hours. It's RED! It messes with my brain the redness. I know, what did I expect from a solid red tent right. Thank goodness I don't spend much time in it during the day. When I have the need for a new tent, BA will be my first stop, just not a solid red one. 😆
Hi dan,how long did you use with the Ba copper spur ? I’m finding an tent for 2 to 3 days camping, so I want some suggest between Ba copper spur and msr hubba hubba, especially the life of them
I had a BA Copper Spur UL2 for about 5 years and it got a 3-4" tear in the mesh of one of the doors. Sent it back to BA to be repaired. They couldn't repair it, so they sent me back a brand new one! Big Agnes is amazing!
That one fact may be why I'd buy big games tents..a company that cares about their customers is worth spending extra money on.
Big Agnes...(dang spellcheck..🤦♂️).
I've heard this from so many people. Big Agnes has a great reputation for customer service.
Using my Copper Spur in North Wales, it blew down in a storm and snapped a pole, replacement sections are not available at the moment in the UK, contacted Big Agnes and they sent me a pole section from Wisconson free of charge. Great company.
I sewed my mesh tear .. good as new
Would love to see how you take care of your gear after backpacking trips!
I’ve been using BA tents for years, along with other brands, and they’ve held up really well. I always set it up at home following a trip, will clean up a bit, and let air dry before repacking. Works great for me!

I literally just bought the tiger wall UL2 last night. So excited. Keep up the great vids!
I have it. Used it in February in Connecticut doing a AT section. Snow on the ground, packed down the snow and set her up. Great tent.

What is that snow camo sleeping bag he shows for a second inside the tiger wall? You can see it at like 7:06
You can find it here. The print is called a hexcam. 👉 ugqoutdoor.com/top-quilts/bandit/?ref=2098

Thumbs up for being a "ground guy".
Nice tarp set up.

Buy a Naturehike Mongar and you wont get ripped off!
I did my outward Bound in the Beartooths. Absolutely gorgeous.
Classic. Love the used to live for hammock tents. Now I’m a ground guy. Lol
My wife and I just backpacked 5 days through the Beartooth mountain last week.

what a salesman :D just love the way you plug things. well done. laidback and informative
😂👍 Thanks! But I honestly was not paid a single penny to make this video. I just really like big Agnes!
This is all good to know as after many months I have finally narrowed my choice of tent down to a BA Copper spur bike edition.
I have the tigerwall 2p and the copper spur 2p being delivered soon. Looking forward to trying them both out and seeing which one I prefer. Right now I'm leaning towards the copper spur.
I literally *just* got my new BA tigerwall 2 on Saturday! it will be my home for 6 months on the AT!
Gotta love MT mountain weather, can snow on any day of the year 😉
The Beartooths are amazing! They're just a couple of hours down the road from us. Thanks for the great video.

Borrowed out to some people is Wisconsinese for loaned out. German based languages don't differentiate borrowed and loaned.
Are you aware of any B.A. models that require, or benefit from after-market seam sealing of rain fly, (with the sealer for Sil-Nylon of course)? When new, and/or after a few uses?
Not that I’m aware of. I’ve owned big Agnes for quite some time and never had to worry one bit about any seam sealing or have had leaks at all.
I wish I could get out to these parts of the country! Cool stuff!
make it a priority.
I love my Big Agnes. What trails were you on in the Beartooths? I did 2 separate week long trips there this summer.
Of those 4 I would go with the big and heavy one. Thanks
20% or $20 off?
My family owns the TW ul3 and the zpack triplex. I will choose the twul3 every time. I like the pockets the roominess and vestibules. I feel like the triplex allows more wind in the tent than the TW too
This is good to hear. I just ordered a fly creek hv ul2. Looking forward to lugging that around until I find a different tent to obsess over haha
How did you set up the minifly with? Trekking poles?
I just found a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1, brand new never used and it was packed inside of a brand new 20L dry bag at Goodwill for $6.99! 😁
I bought a BA on a whim once, it’s hands down my favorite tent ever.
Have you had any issues with the TipLocks breaking on the copper spur?
I have the Scout Plus, that weighs a kilo
I has a full vestibule that relieves all the inner space
It is big enough to manage two people, and with one it is a palace
Single skin so deal with condensation but it is very well ventilated with the open netting being under the tent eves it runs off the damp
Unfortunately discontinued
.
I also have the Fly Creek 2 which is an excellent easy to pitch one person tent
Also just over 1 kilo
not as weather rugged as the Scout Plus
My lightest tent tent is a BA Scout UL2 and it's *fine*. It's shelter and it's light, but it's kind of a moisture trap and that inside trekking pole is a pain to deal with when you kick it over at night. However the lightness and compactness and ease definitely make it a worthwhile piece of kit.
It's fine.
Dan ! I have been camping and hiking for over 30 years. The best sleep I ever had on the trail was in a hammock in the snow and I stayed warm in high winds. I was amazed ! That was my first night hammock camping. I am a dyed in the wool believer now.
Great video again. Which is the best mountaineering tent from big agnes then in your opinion?
Big Agnes Copper Spur for the win for me!
Good point! I actually talk about that in a video coming out next week!
Woah using a tarp like that as a place to hang out is brilliant! Very cool man
Borrowed them out? Lent?
Which tent would you recommend for a motorcycle/bike camper?
I was desperate to have at least one BA item and the only thing I could afford was a sleeping quilt, which I love ! Can you say what tarp you were using here?
I bought a Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1 for backpacking. I debated between that & a Z Packs Duplex. Quite pleased with the Big Agnes! Nice job Dan.
Im planning on buying a version of the Big House 4 with the full fly. I was going to go with a Kelty Wireless 6 but this model of the Big House is discontinued and on sale for a great price. I just do car camping.
What do you call the tarp structure in the middle of your campsite with all the chairs under it? I have brought tarps but never with poles like that.
Porch mode
We're using the Tiger Wall UL2. It is a little snug, but the weight is perfect.
i just bought the BA salt creek sl2 and theres like no videos on it but it looks sweet
I've been searching for more videos too as I just bought this tent. Let me know if you find any and your initial impressions please! I've been worried I should have paid more $$$ for a lighter weight but I still think 3lbs 11oz isn't terrible...?
Prices ? Can you purchase in UK 🇬🇧?
Cheers Dan 👍
Thanks Dan! I'm interested in that St Croix fishing rod you have, could you do a video on lightweight fishing gear?
Here it is! St. Croix Triumph Fishing Rod 4pc amzn.to/3Cd6Qtg
Just curious the tiger wall looks so light and almost translucent I would have hard time falling asleep, ba bike version is a darker grey color but is not available in reg version is it an issue , im sure you don't sleep in while backpacking but would be nice once in a while
Sir that tent that you used in this video is not a tent its a cocoon. It is so sheer! Mind blown!
😂😂
What’s a good backpack for a day use?
What’s your opinion on them compared to Nemo I’m in the market for a two person
The Tiger Wall Platinum also does not have vents in the fly - another difference. (It’s what kept me from getting the platinum version of the Copper Spur). I personally did not like the Tiger Wall because the foot end is so shallow with only a ridge pole there. My footbox would actually push the mesh against the fly and get wet from condensation.
Good catch!!
How do the BA tents hold up to dogs nails?
is the super bivy rain proof?
You can use an umbrella 🌂 as a vestibule I've been doing it for awhile works well with my dynemma tarp with a beak.
I love MT!!! DEFINITELY in my Top 3 along with AZ and TX
Montana is gorgeous and the mountain hiking is limitless. My boys and I just did a 56 mile/6 day hike into the Bob Marshall Wilderness in to the Chinese Wall. It was the most amazing time. Check it out 😉
Dan Becker....you would LOVE this area also!
Good video.
Dan Becker.. the YT Hiking Gear advertising machine!!!
I crammed 3 people in a 2 person tent last weekend and it was squishy but perfectly fine. Definitely warm 😅
You ever hiked the cdt or seen grizzly bears ever ?
I got a B.A. copper spur 4 years ago and the shock cord in the poles completely lost the stretch!
Any luck with the Mountain Hardware Strato UL 2 tent? Stuck between getting that or a Copper Spur.
@@DanBecker great, thanks for the insight!
I bought the new big agnss tiger wall ul2 bike pack, the pole cracked after the first multiday hike and then on the next one the zip flap tore. I've found it really fragile but it is super light and really spacious.
So I’m curious and likely missed the video on it, but what steered you toward tents versus hammocks? Tree availability on key trips?
Big Agnes Frying Pan SL2 Tent with Footprint. Got it a few years ago so no longer in production and a bit heavy but I enjoy the comfort of space.
Ever used the black tail?
I’m finding an tent for 2 to 3 days camping, so I want some suggest between Ba copper spur and msr hubba hubba, especially the life of them
The Copper Spur is my luxury tent. When I want to go lighter it’s my Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo.
