  • We didn't know much about food in Malaysia before coming here. We knew it would be diverse and sure, an interesting fusion, but nothing like the foods we had in this Kuala Lumpur DIY food tour!
We experienced so many new flavors and dishes, and as we strolled around KL looking for more foods to try, we kept saying to each other... this might be our best food tour to date! 🤯 Which we know is a bold statement, but seriously guys, how were we doing life without Malaysian food? It's such an interesting mix! AND IT'S DELICIOUS!!!!! 🤤❤️🇲🇾
We hope you enjoy this Kuala Lumpur food tour and appreciate the diversity of flavors this incredible city has to offer :)

For the cendol, you can stir it using the straw so that all the contents are fully mixed, especially the sugar syrup which is pooling at the bottom. You can remove the lid, stir the drink and put the lid back on before consuming. Cendol can also be served in a bowl, especially if you can find a stall selling it with a designated area to sit. You can mix it more easily in a bowl as you will be given a spoon instead of a straw.

@@waysoftheworld_ that’s completely fine! Cendol is ubiquitous here in Malaysia, so even if you’re leaving KL to travel to other parts of the country, you can always give the drink another go as it is sold almost everywhere. You will also find other mix-ins for cendol such as red beans and durian, depending on the season. Give it a try!

@@waysoftheworld_ Really worth a second try but this time make sure that the seller does not use ice crusher like the one you had. The ice should be shaved. In fact I would say, it must be shaved! It makes a difference in taste and texture(obviously . You will be able to identify the ice shaver - don't worry. Pro tip - try the one sold by Indian Muslims. There're the pros... Having said that however, the best cendol I ever had was the one by a Chinese on an ally off Penang Street - in Penang.

I agree that the taste wont be the same without spice and hot chillies but I also saw in videos where tourists avoid certain dishes they thought too spicy for them not knowing these dishes can be catered to their taste bud. For example, nasi lemak can be eaten on its own with rendang, without sambal, or without rendang but with fried chicken. Char kuey teow can be made less spicy. Roti canai with only dhal sauce without spicy curry and so on.

Malaysian food is generally a play of different tastes and textures so best way to enjoy it is to try the individual bits first then mix it all up for the full effect 😊 In other words, drinking chendol without mixing it up first is a common 1st timer mistake but try it again next time fully mixed

@@waysoftheworld_ - another thing to note is that the coconut milk used in chendol or any other malaysian desserts will have a bit of salt added. this addition brings out the creaminess and sweetness of pure coconut milk.

Cendol is best eaten in its original form i.e. flour cendol jelly, coconut milk, brown sugar and shaved ice. The problem nowadays is vendors/hawkers like to add in other stuff like corn, red beans etc to make it more exotic, but they're actually spoiling its taste. So next time you come to a cendol place, ask for 'cendol biasa', which means normal cendol. Try it and taste the difference. Penang is known for having the best cendol in the country.. 😊

not sure if anyone mentioned it but the letter “c” in Malay is pronounced “ch” like church. so roti canai is row-tee cha-nye and cendol is chen-dough-l. 😆
but i saw a lot of people mention that you forgot to mix the syrup in the cendol. the syrup is called gula melaka and is actually palm sugar from palm trees and not sugar cane. it has a slightly different taste from sugar.

The Lok Lok is actually called Dip Dip eg dipping the skewer into the boiling water and boiled just a while like 10-20 seconds or something as long as its cook but don't over cook it as it will be mushy or too soft and it will be a disaster (you should ask the stall owner ... all Malaysians are friendly and willing to help especially a first timer. As for the Chendol you got to really mix them up well and it blends into a very creamy sweet coconutty taste and its awesome . Food Paradise of Malaysia is actually in Penang ... try all the hawker and local food it's tasty and full of flavours and Penang is basically Hokkien based island so food there are very Hokkien influence .Food to try there ... white curry noodles, fry keow teow with duck egg , Chendol, Assam Laksa, Keow Teow Teng (noodle soup), Nasi Kandar to name a few. Btw my name is Anthony from Ipoh ... Ipoh is also a up coming food heaven. Please do ask the locals on how you should eat the local food if you have no idea how to go about it to get the umami or get the ultimate taste on these food ... they are always ready to render help. Enjoy your MALAYSIA trip especially the food ... A UNIC taste ... FOOD DIVERSITY OF ASIA (having mix cultural and mix racial in Malaysia.

For northern American like you guys should opt out of corn since you guys find it weird to have corn in drinks or dessert. However, be prepared for sweet corn galore in SEA. They exist in most dessert
