His voice is an instrument, but he's also constantly adjusting which instrument, i.e. sometimes he's part of the rhythm section, sometimes he carries the melodic lines, sometimes he syncopates, at other points he's setting the time... The "wap, wap, wap...," line is a perfect example. I hear it on multiple levels, because it's using sound to give us a visual image (of Kendrick beating Drake's ass lol), but it also functions very much like scat singing. It's communicating rhythm but also the level of emotional intensity; it's the rap equivalent of a preacher catching the holy spirit & speaking in tongues.
