Sup guys! First time listener here. Please don’t rush through the content due to time restraints. The conversation is amazing and I’d listen for hours.
Yeah, I'm binge watching the channel's eps now after discovering this a few days ago. What "time restraints" are on RUclips? Lol. This isn't the radio/tv era of show-advertisement-back to the show-advertisement-the end of show.
I'm in Atlanta now but I'm from South Central and I would have loved to be home when this dropped. Other folks might enjoy the album but I believe K Dot made this album for Cali natives
@kaywhitehurst3209 I live in VA now, but born in the Bay, raised in SD. So yep, same. I just snatched Inglewood tickets for the concert. I'm sure I won't be the only 40+ year old, boppin as hard as these 20 somethings
It's definitely not an anti Drake album. He's allowed to mention the situation. People would lose it if he didn't. That doesn't mean the project is based on an anti Drake sentiment. But yes, it was a huge battle that he won, so of course it comes up. Was Drake's follow up to Meek Mill and Pusha "anti"? Because he certainly dragged those battles
Right! People were complaining about Kendrick not talking about the beef in the magazine interview, only to later complain/ask why he's referencing Drake/the beef on this album. It's like do you want him to speak on it or not? Cause it seems that he's only speaking about that topic thru his music right now.
I disagree. I think it is an anti Drake album, but not in the way you may be approaching it. I think it's anti Drake in the sense of what he believes Drake represents and stands for. The album is about representing the soil, honoring the culture, integrity, stating your principles, values, what he cherishes and the consequences, for anyone that wants it...the difference, all the things he told us that Drake knows nothing of, throughout the battle. So yes, I believe it to be extremely anti the concept of Drake and it still contains plenty of direct shots
GNX is like a great movie, the more a listen, the more I love it. The lucious Jack Antonoff string arrangements alone are Oscar winning performances, next time you listen, zero down on them. First time hearing a album that would've gotten 5🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤 in the good old source days and so too, today, face it, Kendrick Lamar is the Afro Samurai of the Hip Hop Game. Btw. K Dot signing back ups with SZA in the background?!?! R&B Kenny!
my feelings about Luther are this. it was the best song about true love to come out in the past decade. The way those lyrics are worded isn't describing a fling or lust confused as love, but true, honest to god love, where you're blind to the world and all you want to do is hold each others hand as you walk through life together while building each other up.
Someone posted on another creators page that they thought Luther was more of a love letter to Whitney because she was verbally attacked/defamed by Aubrey. That sounds more like what Luther is. "I would take your enemies in front of God. Introduce them to that light. Hit them strictly with that fire."
I just have to say that after the serious tones and themes of GKMC, TPAB, DAMN and MMATBS, GNX is an extremely FUN album. It's like Kendrick finally came to a point where he can enjoy the (creative) freedom he aspires to bring into the community.
It's very danceable. People have gotten too accustomed to low BPM vibe music that lets them play on their phone instead of dancing and enjoying the music.
Very. I literally go thru an enternal struggle, any time I'm playin the album when I'm on foot in public, cuz I be ready to dust off my dance shoes and go IN😂😂😂
I think heart pt 6 was on the project because he's no longer with TDE. I think it's the final one in the series. Its a goodbye now that he's PG Lang. IMO
Yeah one thing that stood out to me is that gnx, the title track is really more of a posse cypher. so in a very literal sense that track is a vehicle for all these new artists. I totally agree with you on this feeling more like a mix tape but that being said it's still super layered with meanings and themes. Lots of stuff around generational transfer of talent and limelight. loved that he was queuing up all these new folks.
Snoop been jumping the dance and Backpedaling for YEARSSSS! He was studdering big time when asked directly about how he feels about Kendrick getting the Superbowl. Geminis don't give passes for lukewarm, pandering behavior! "2025 y'all still moving on some scary shit" -Kendrick Lamar
In reference to "Luther" definitely check out the "All the Stars" reference track / Demo. It really demonstrates Kendricks song making and singing ability which he has definitely worked on and improved since then.
I'd say it is pro driving album. All the songs sound like driving around. Sometimes the flow is weaving in and out of traffic and sometimes it is a slow cruise.
Found the channel , thanks for letting us know on the Stephen A , Toure’ ; I’ve tried to type in your name and never could find you sir , so I want to say thanks for putting it out on Stephen A
Nice catch on the GenX double Toure. Drake glazers are annoyed that Kendrick requires a study guide. 😅 As far as features with a future, AZChike has a great radio interview on YT about how the whole project happened and his feelings about it. He's an authentic, cool dude and I peeped his most recent record 'Love Yo Weapons' and it's 🔥 After 3 weeks of listening to GNX, one theme of this album I haven't seen shouted out is Kendrick's call out to recruit soldiers for the fight to save the soul of hip hop, and what he is doing to inspire new artists. He uses military references like 'Going up your rank, 'Here's some rules of engagement here to guide you' (Wacced Up Murals) 'Few solid ninjas left, but it's not enough. Few b*tches that will really step, but it's not enough' and 'Who you with? Couple sergeants and lieutenants for the get-back, this revolution been televised, I fell through with the knick knacks.' Drake fans have survived on cotton candy. They aren't used to the variety and goodies to knibble on from Thanksgiving dinner. ✌️
Soundwave and jack antonoff have a great relationship and have a group together so there is relationship and connection between Kendrick and jack through soundwave
Man this was FRUSTRATING!!! Because Toure is all over the place with this…. 🤷🏽♀️He kept bouncing all around to different songs giving these weird perspectives!! 🤦🏾♀️It’s Driving me CRAZY!! I can feel the Co host frustration as well!! I’m trying to listen to and follow him because HE, is SPOT ON!!!! Would love to hear him break down THIS MAGNIFICENT MASTERPIECE Alone…. No shade, but He really gets the nuances of The West Coast Culture and we really, really appreciate that shht in the rest of The Country….The World!! Thank you Brotha!!🤎
4:30 I feel like just because he's not saying Drake's name people are MISSING THE FACT that this is ABSOLUTELY an anti-Drake album and EVERYONE ELSE! This is what I feel Drake has done, dumbed down even the hip-hop heads. How anyone can say this isn't blatantly anti-Drake and everyone on his side, is insane to me!
I don't think GNX is an anti-Drake album. My theory is that Kendrick crafted an ode to West Coast culture using the bones of the diss tracks he had left + other material. Every time I listen to GNX, I kept coming back to the that line from Not Like Us - "How many stocks do I really have in stock? One, two, three, four, five plus five." Any way you count, it means Kendrick didn't use all of the songs he had for the beef & he explicitly told us that was the case. A lot of people wanted him to release a full album of Drake Disses. Other people wanted him to release an album of club songs/Not Like Us clones. Still other people wanted him to release a fresh new magnum opus to blow everyone's minds pre-Super Bowl. Etc. Knowing what we know about Kendrick, my hunch is he heard all the requests, suggestions & demands and decided to do with GNX what he did with the Pop Out concert - turn the particularities of the beef into a rallying point for a much wider & longer-term mission to unite the West and rebuild & redeem culture & community. The beef with Drake is just a vehicle for communicating an alternate vision of Hip Hop's future.
The jack antonoff play I think is firing back at drake for when he called Kendrick out for not dropping anything to stay out the way of a Taylor release that week….and metro boomin is producer of the year for me
I’m curious - I’m renewing my interest in rap. I know that Kendrick had a concert called the Big Steppers. Kindred just announced his GNX stadium tour (with a stop in Toronto 😂😂). Is the name of the tour relevant to the discussion regarding album vs mixtape?
Sup guys! First time listener here. Please don’t rush through the content due to time restraints. The conversation is amazing and I’d listen for hours.
THIS! RUclips has no time constraints.
Yeah, I'm binge watching the channel's eps now after discovering this a few days ago. What "time restraints" are on RUclips? Lol. This isn't the radio/tv era of show-advertisement-back to the show-advertisement-the end of show.
This album is truly sparking so many conversations and it's a treat to listen to them in real time.
I'm 52, Cali native living in Texas. This album has me seriously considering returning home. CPT foreva 💪🏽❤️💯
I'm in Atlanta now but I'm from South Central and I would have loved to be home when this dropped. Other folks might enjoy the album but I believe K Dot made this album for Cali natives
Sand Diego to Denver and same ❤

@@kenking2536 agreed
I’m from Chicago but I love Cali so much. I always wonder what makes people move from there cause I love it so much.
GNX is peak Kendrick. There's no use in comparing it to other works, GNX is a Masterpiece.

I agree…he’s using drake as a smokescreen to say a lot of sub stuff
Right! People were complaining about Kendrick not talking about the beef in the magazine interview, only to later complain/ask why he's referencing Drake/the beef on this album.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many people commenting the same thing that I thought. It keeps getting better!
PEEKABOO IS THE BEST!!!! He is talking HEAVY! And its fun!
Green dropping gems like a clumsy jeweler. Call that man Greenius

Most thoughtful, rigorous analysis of GNX thus far. Appreciate this deep dive. If yall got a part two in yall that would be dope!

Oh I love these breakdown videos!
Everything isn’t about Drake.
Soundwave and Jack have a production group and soundwave is Kendrick's main producer.
Also something that tells me that their is another album coming is that in the snippet?, their are in fact two cars. Double back like a deluxe

I seen a video of someone walking up to Mustard and they screamed his name like that he just immediately walked away 😂😂
Easily top 3 album of 2024.
Clancy,
Chromakopia,
GNX
#1 is between Kendrick and Tyler.
Top 3 Kendrick discography.
TIER 1 : Butterfly, GNX, Good Kid
Word to Insert===@ 5:04 “ DISMANTLED”
In reference to "Luther" definitely check out the "All the Stars" reference track / Demo. It really demonstrates Kendricks song making and singing ability which he has definitely worked on and improved since then.

Jack Antonov, and soundwave who is Kendrick Lamar’s producer have a band together
Soundwave and Jack have a project they work on all time. So soundwave connection
Found the channel , thanks for letting us know on the Stephen A , Toure’ ; I’ve tried to type in your name and never could find you sir , so I want to say thanks for putting it out on Stephen A
Thanks for the sub!
Great podcast. Love the breakdown

All the ft are primarily gangster rappers 5:14 there’s an element of anti drake prevalent throughout

hey now say now and gnx are my favorite
I have never liked Drake's music...hopefully he never makes it back to the studio! I'm glad his reign is over. Take your toys and home Drake!!
🎉
Its not an anti-Drake album its a pro-West Coast album. And not danceable!!!!?? How can you NOT move for more than half the record?

Pac got mad at snoop for not taking a side, same as kendrick is doing now
first time i listen to people talking about this topic with reflexion. the bakademiks level was frustrating and insulting for the culture.
14:31 right it’s war time
All his albums after GKMC has shots on them so of course this album will too but I wouldn’t call it a anti Drake album though
33:44 😂
