Hey guys! Today on my channel we are reacting to some choosing beggars being entitled during the pandemic! Entitled karens are EVERYWHEREl Entitled parents, entitled customers. There is no shortage of entitled people and they seem to be out in full force since the pandemic started. As an artist, I've experienced my fair share of choosing beggars. Everyone wants your art, but nobody wants to pay for it. Enjoy :)

In fact, family member should pay more than a normal customers, because they of course want to support their family, right?
Happened once in my aunt's diner though. My grandma insisted on paying while my aunt insisted that it's in the house (my grandparents didn't have any income nor pension so their children all gave them money every month based on how much rzey could afford). My grandma won the round but the next day, my aunt came by bringing some of her most expensive dishes to grandma and claimed it was leftover so she gave it away 😂😂😂.

As a hobbyist quilter, I run into this ALL the time. The materials required and the time it takes for even just a small baby quilt is quite a bit, but people don't ever seem to understand that. I'll gift someone that I know a quilt, then all of a sudden people I've never even met before demand to have a quilt done for near-free and within a couple of days time. Yeah. No. I've learned my lesson early on, and I hope all of you artists out there do, too. Value your time, your money, and your love for what you do, and don't ever feel guilty about saying "no" to someone who doesn't share the same value in your talents!

I used to make specialty cakes, everything from wedding cakes to character cakes. I've been paid over 600 dollars for a cake in the 80's. People started asking me for "free" character cakes because I would make them for my own sons' birthdays and cakewalks for their school festivals to raise money. I would be like "what"???? It took days to make an Oscar the Grouch cake, or a Cookie Monster, etc., days to build a trashcan, bake two or three layer cakes, make marzipan eyes, etc., and these people would whine about the cost of the materials, let alone pay me for my time and effort, and I had a houseful of kids... When all my boys were out of grade school I sold all my gear. All of it.

I sew and quilt in my spare time but I will not sell quilts or clothes. I give things as handmade gifts to friends or family as the materials and labour costs can never be recuperated plus profit. My nan was an amazing textile artist and was approached by a high end UK department to sell her art quilts but she refused as the offer would never cover the cost of her time spent hand quilting her masterpieces.

My aunt is an amazing quilter. She has done a few as birth gifts for friends and never charges them. She is a midwife and one of her closest colleagues is a woman my aunt helped bring into the world. My aunt was close to the mom and when the daughter became a midwife at the same hospital as my aunt she was beyond thrilled. My aunt made the most beautiful quilt when she gave birth and took it into the hospital, and left it in the nurse locker room. Only nurses and cleaning staff had access and some pond scum stole it. After pictures were put on social media and posters put up with pictures of it in the private staff only areas it suddenly "mysteriously reappeared". Some people are just vile, stealing a birth gift from a new mom. Fortunately it was so lovely and unique (it had the baby's name stitched into it) it became too hot to handle and the thief returned it.

One of the night desk staff at my housing complex spends the slow hours crocheting turtles with a pouch inside for herbs and potpourri. She plans to sell them on the net for a low and very reasonable price for a little extra cash. I stay and chat with her sometimes and see that handmade goods take money, material, and time; I wouldn't dream of asking for one for free. At the most it would be " maybe change your usual color combo and I'll have the money by the first of the month".

If I was getting a tattoo on my body and then found this guy on the sex registry list, I would want my money back...the inconvenience fee is ridiculous.
I somehow doubt this was the case because she for sure would have brought that up.
Other crimes such as burglary, drugs ect. He paid his time and now has turned his life around. In my opinion most people deserve a second chance, especially 20 years ago, which means he was probably very young when his crime took place. I would hate to be judged for all my past mistakes for the rest of my life.
But again, if it was anything with SA, no way would I want that person to touch my body. Sorry if that makes me sound like a bad or petty person, it's just my truth, I think a lot of women feel the same way even if they wouldn't publicly say so.

I had someone ask me to crochet a queen sized Afghan but said they’d pay me $20. I laughed and said that is not going to be less than 100 and prices go up from there depending also on how difficult it is. She said she can find it cheaper at Walmart, well then, go to Walmart! They have their crap done by machine which looks cheap and they fall apart quickly. The 20 dollars wouldn’t have even covered all the materials. It only really came into a recognized art form after it was on reality TV, plus, people in prison have been doing “jailhouse” tattoos forever, and it gave people a safe way to make money in a field that was actually accepting of them once they were done with their time.

It sucks, I spend weeks of every year doing proposals and often they are requested by designers so they can make their presentations look better to their client and they take credit for all the work their suppliers send them. I've learned who to weed out, ask them for budgets up front and always try to find out the time frame of the project to know if it's 3-5 years out I know my time is being wasted. Sadly there is no any way to avoid being walked all over as an artist. We are always bidding against others for good work and this is how they get us to do work for free.

I then explained that depending on the type of yarn they wanted it could be up to $30 per skein of yarn. Then you have to add in hours worked as colorwork take many hours to make. The size of the pullover will also may hours change. They said they will only pay for the cost of the materials alone and will not pay for time and will not pay more than $45. I then told them they could buy the yarn and then learn how to knit to make their own sweater.

“Everybody wants your art, but nobody wants to pay you for it” 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻 yes. So true and it’s annoying. People don’t know the time and work you put into your work. The arts is a rough business. I used to make dog portrait paintings and I was getting paid. No more than $45 and it would take a long time to get it done. Sometimes I had to buy more materials and I wasn’t even including that in the price. I am not a professional but I take pride in the art I create. I stopped doing that because I couldn’t handle the number of orders and how my closest family tried to wiggle out of paying me. Yet they were the same people always telling me “you can sell your art if you really focus on it”. The thing is, painting and drawing is something I do to calm my nerves and relieve myself from stress. Making it to earn money doesn’t really satisfy me. It’s my therapy to escape and free myself. I do it to inspire others to do what they love and add color to the world. People are so selfish, self centered, and entitled. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

It must be hard to be in a profession that's artistic. People will always want something for nothing!

Wow. That last one was unhinged. Geez! Yeah, I was asked for photography for free all the time. I decided to stop being a photographer, and still get asked to do stuff for free. Seriously considering selling my camera equipment, so I have an easy out. Entitled people can be psychotic.

Don't let it stop you. Take a break and get those boundaries up when the next time an idiot wants free pictures, shut them down! Only time I do things for free is bartering services with a photographer, non profit etc get the exposure they bring the people to me.

Keeshia Lacy I hear you. I left the industry, because clients stress me out. I have been out of the field for 4-5 years now.

I knit and crochet and YES! "I can get the exact same thing from WalMart for only $20!" Then go to friggin' walmart and buy it then! I'm currently working on hand knit wool socks for Canadian (or Texas?) winters. $45/pair. I have some pretty good clients but there are a few who say "How much for SOCKS? You're trying to rip me off!" One of the women who did that cleans houses for a living and charges $45 for a regular "tidy" (vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping - she says it takes her 2 hours). So I offered "Come clean my house once a week for a month and I will give you the 4 prs of socks in return." Her response? "MY TIME IS WORTH SOMETHING!" Yup, honey. So is mine. Clean my house 4x and you'll get 4 prs of free socks. I am still cleaning my own house...

I want to know what the cousin thought in the last one hearing how this friend talked to her cousin. I think I would have been done with the convo and would have blocked her. I draw an I have folks always asking me to draw a tattoo for them but then they want it free. In that time I could be doing other things .. this frustrates me

Used to work in a grocery store bakery where people could order custom cakes. The number of people that came in requesting something they found on Pinterest (it's a grocery store, they don't use fondant or modeling chocolate, nor did we do tiered cakes), or wanting to use professional photos they didn't have a release form for, or a copyrighted image...just mind-blowing. And yes, they would complain about the price. Point of fact: were they to go to a specialty bakery for some of these Pinterest creations, they would be forking over $500 MINIMUM, on average.

I personally think if you’ve been invited to a Hollywood party you would clearly have enough money to pay you’re mua plus give them the credit for a great job, they can afford it whereas the MUA could be a small start up that could use the leg up. A discount maybe but how many people/reporters as who did your makeup ?!! Unless your like lady Gaga and it’s outrageous glam. But still they should be paid For their time and then give the exposure if they’ve done an amazing job ...

I think the best thing I ever saw was someone on twitter commenting about 'Exposure'. It was something to the extent (paraphrasing) that 'anyone asking for exposure has not found a way to market their idea yet and don't want you to figure that out. As the artist, they don't give you exposure, you give THEM exposure." And if THAT doesn't work, when someone tells you 'its for exposure' tell them you are calling the police for attempted harm on yourself, cause people can DIE from exposure!

I've literally never thought about 'shopping around' for a tattoo? You choose an artist you like and accept their price because you appreciate their work and it'll be on you forever?? But ok.

@@benjalucian1515 Yea, totally agreed when it comes to art style/skill level. Shopping around for just the lowest price bid though.. that's just asking for trouble lol.

@@onehellofaninvader - very true. Based on a quote from an old TV movie, "Three things you shouldn't stint on - sushi, surgery, submarines." I would add tattoos to that list.
